Description from the owner
We offer two accommodation options here at Hale Kai. We are located on a beautiful beach front property on two private acres with 450 feet of beach front on the unique Hawaiian Island of Molokai. We are set well off the road, offering maximum quiet and solitude. You can not see any neighbors from our property. The two accommodations options to choose from are our home and guest cottage. The house and cottage are very private from each other. In fact, you can barely see either from the other. The house sleeps 4 (1 or 2 couples), the cottage 2 (1 couple). Each has it's own unobstructed view of the ocean from an expansive covered deck. Bo...Read more

Victoria, CanadaStayed at Lovely, Private Studio Cottage with Water View
Left on 03/15/2013 for a stay in March 2013
From our first pleasant correspondence with the owner, Jessica regarding booking to our warm goodbye with the on site caretaker, Jill everything was done to make our stay relaxing, comfortable and fun.
The interior of the studio cottage for two appears larger than the photos. The cottage is equipped with a full kitchen, tables inside and out, a very comfortable bed (although not very firm, it was comfortable for us who usually sleeps in a firmer bed) and a comfortable leather couch. The art work on the walls was pleasing. On the lanai (porch), there were two comfy chairs around a side table. Being a warm climate there are some small ants despite the cleanliness of the entire building and grounds, so bring some zip lock bags and/or small plastic containers for your snacks and food.
The way the studio and house are situated, there is complete privacy. The view from the lanai was unobstructed and we spent time relaxing after using the two kayaks just out front from the property. Also there were life jackets provided. Because the tide was only high in the middle of the night during our stay, we did not have the chance to do a lot of snorkeling in Molokai, but the water was clean and inviting.
Molokai is not a big island and we made two trips to town (Kaunakakai) for shopping or dinner a couple of times in one day. The road is easy to drive and very pretty. The west end beaches are also reachable from this location although there are nice spots to swim just down the road in the east end.
We loved the comfort and quiet as we were set back from the main road by a private driveway. The outdoor hot shower was a nice convenience. We bought some Hawaiian Cd's and played them in the CD player. There was a TV and DVD player, too.
Note: The studio rents for less than the two bedroom house. If you are with another couple or your budget allows, then you may want to choose the house. We had a peek at it and it is magnificent, but we would be happy to have the chance to stay again in the cottage.
For restaurant review and things to do on Molokai, I will submit separate reviews, but I will say that we enjoyed the pace of life on Molokai, the warm and kind people and the lack of commercial tourism. We stayed nine days, were never bored and still had things we wanted to do. -

After spending the first part of our honeymoon in the touristic parts of Oahu and Big Island, we were looking forward to spending the rest of our honeymoon in a more relaxing, secluded and romantic getaway on Hawaii. My wife and I both being experienced world travelers came to the Hale Kai Beachfront Estate with high expectations and glad to say that the place delivered everything it promised plus so much more.
We highly recommend this place to any couple or family looking for a relaxing and romantic getaway while offering all the amenities found back home. The drive from the airport and from the nearby town center is about 25-30 minutes by car and only required to purchase groceries and gas for the car. Everything else we needed was provided at the estate. There are great hiking tours on the Island that we highly recommend. There is a farm close to the airport (Kumu Farms) that sells organic fruits and vegetables and filet mignon that tastes amazing. The kitchen was well equipped for anyone interested to cook, BBQ, bake or even create gourmet meals. I used the BBQ on a daily basis while my wife baked us fresh Muffins. We had a chance to meet Jill the housekeeper who was very friendly and willing to help whenever needed. The only concern we had initially was lack of air-condition, but once we opened the windows, there was no need for air-condition and it was very relaxing hearing the waves crash on the shorelines a short distance away. The area was always clean and well maintained and despite having another vacation rental and housekeeper living on the same estate, we had all the privacy we needed. We would certainly consider coming back in the future with family and friends. -

Chicago, IllinoisA beautiful home in a perfect setting - perfect for a honeymoon
Left on 07/25/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We rented the main house while our friends stayed in the cottage for our wedding/honeymoon and I have to say that after this experience, I don't know how we'll ever be able to go on any other vacation again. The homeowners, Jessica and Robert, provided the ceremony and photography for our intimate wedding and were absolutely wonderful. Pictures of the home do not do it justice since you can't fully appreciate sitting on the porch while staring at the ocean in a remote setting until you are actually there doing it. Views of the ocean dominate and everything inside is top notch, clean, and comfortable. The home and cottage are isolated from any other neighbors (as well as each other), which is really nice, and are just minutes from two of the most beautiful beaches on the island. This is an incredible place to stay and I highly recommend it to any couple.

Portland, OregonAmazing Romantic Cottage!
Left on 03/17/2011 for a stay in April 2010
My husband and I stayed in the small cottage next to the main house for our 11 day honeymoon to Molokai in March 2010. For this trip we wanted a secluded location away from tourists and this was the answer to our vacation prayers! The property is located quite a ways from the airport but during the drive you get a feel for the vibe of the island which is unlike any other Hawaiian island. The property is beautiful and has its own private beach with two kayaks, a picnic table, lounge chairs and BBQ. The cottage has a full kitchen but at the time the oven wasn't working and the only temp it would go to was broil! I learned this the hard way trying to bake my husband's birthday cake, but it makes for a good story. The other thing was the internet was not working in the cottage as it was too far from the main house. But who needs internet in paradise? There was another couple staying in the main house, which you can see from the cottage, but other than that it is very secluded. We didn't see any neighbors at all. I highly recommend Hale Kai as your vacation rental on Molokai, you won't be disappointed! Of note, there are a lot of spiders, geckos & centipedes around the property.
Recommendations for things to do on Molokai:
- Definitely rent a jeep. You'll need it for any kind of exploring on the island's many dirt roads
- Have a Mocha Mama (specialty drink) at Molokai Coffee Plantation - they have wireless
- Hike the Halawa valley (guided tour only as it's on private land, also the site where Polynesians first landed on Hawaii).
- visit Maunaloa Kite Factory
- make your own Plumeria lei at Molokai Plumerias farm
- take the mule ride down the world's highest seacliffs at Palaau State Park to Kalaupapa National Historic park (not for those afraid of heights) or you can hike down.
- visit the farmer's market in the town of Kaunakaki (you'll pass through it on your way to Hale Kai)
- Tour one of the last privately owned macadamia nut farms - best I've ever tasted!
- visit the beaches on the west end of the island. There's one near the golf course (which has been abandonded) that has the most beautiful surf I've ever seen and there was not a soul in sight! Only down side is you can't swim there, too dangerous. There are swimming beaches further south on the west end of the island.
These are a few of the super amazing things we did while visiting Molokai. One more bit of advice, don't engage in any sort of political debate with Hawaiians that live on the island. They are very much into preserving their island and keeping it "the real Hawaii". They want you to visit and be on your way so just have some respect for that. -

Jessica was great. She responed to e-mails quickly and everything was clearly explained about the rental process and what to expect. Nothing was left to chance.
The home was fabulous. Well designed, maintained and completely stocked with everything we would need. When we first walked in it felt like it was our home. It is a warm and relaxing environment that helped us to begin to unwind from the trip to the island. The personnal touches used to decorate the home made it a one of a kind place.
It is so very private and and quiet there. The grounds are beautiful and help accentuate the idea that you are somewhere special.
The location is perfect with beautiful waterfront inside the island's barrier reef, which makes for easy kayaking and wading. It is close to some fabulous snorkeling and great scenic areas on the east end of the island. Every morning while having our coffee, we would watch the whales play just off the reef.
Then, enjoy the real high point of the morning, head to the outdoor shower.
We will be returning and staying longer next time. -

My husband, Roger, and I spent 2 weeks in the cottage on this property. We so enjoyed the ocean view, outdoor shower, and most of all the privacy ! The cottage is set well off the main road and it is very quiet. The grounds are well kept and it was fun to just walk around the property to discover all the plants and flowers. Don't miss lunch at the little store about 2 miles from the property...great plate lunches! Molokai is the fourth island we have been to and it is surely the most relaxed, untouched, and friendly isle! If you are looking for an "escape" this is the island, and property, to choose! Unfortunately, the weather wasn't the best while we were there, but we made the most of it anyway. Really enjoyed the swimming and snorkeling at Dixie Maru about an hour's drive west. If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss the 10 pm "bread run" at the local bakery in town. Hot bread with your choice of toppings...mmm ...mmmm. Best entertainemnt spot was at the local hotel (about 15 miles west) listening to Lono!! Attended church at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows where we met some fantastic people! If you choose to go to Molokai you won't be sorry !

Actually, we visited the beautiful island of Molokai twice; March 2004 & March 2007. We stayed
both times at Hale Kai Beachfront Estate in the
"big" house. The oceanfront property view is to
put it simple; AWESOME! The view is not to be found
anywhere else on Molokai. The house was perfect and very comfortable. Oh, especially in the mornings waking up to the wonderful sounds all around just sitting on the covered deck. Oh by the way, this local boy from Honolulu loves the island and the "big" house. It takes me back to when Hawaii was simple and enjoyable. Emotions ran high when leaving and we will return again & again.

We are a retired couple from Honolulu and were looking for a quiet and
well-appointed beachfront vacation rental on Molokai to share with another
retired couple from the mainland who are our traveling partners on
occasion. We found Hale Kai on the vrbo list for Molokai and immediately
contacted Jessica. We stayed in the ?big? house (2 bedrooms, 2 baths) for
one week with our friends, and still can?t believe how idyllic the property
was for us. We can?t say enough about how perfect our week was at Hale
Kai. We spent hours on the lanai in the rockers, gazing at early morning
and late afternoon sunrises and sunsets on Maui. The men went out in the
mornings for excursions on the two kayaks available for guests? use on the
sand in front of the house, as my friend and I prepared hearty breakfasts in
the beautiful, state of the art kitchen with every piece of beautiful cookware
one could possibly need. The outdoor shower was amazing after dips in the
ocean right in front of the house. The small convenience store just down
the road provided everything we needed if we didn?t care to drive into
Kaunakakai for major supplies. We hiked into Halawa Valley with an
experienced guide, walked through beautiful Mo?omomi on another guided
hike, and were treated to delicious local fare (both food and music) at the
Cookhouse. We can?t wait to return to Hale Kai...you will not find another
dwelling as lovely and peaceful anywhere on the island! -

This place is perfect if you want to be alone and recharge your soul. The house
is comfortable, the view from the lanai is stunning and they have these cool
kayaks that you can paddle around the ocean in. The house is not near town,
it is about a 17 mile drive but we loved the solitude. We will be going back
one day for sure!! -

During our long winter in Alberta, Canada we were visiting Molokai. The place we found was Hale Kai Beachfront Estate and we rented the cottage.
The cottage was not big, but for us it was perfect! The Lanai we used for all our meals and the beachfront was our place in the morning sun. The private location with the beautiful garden we will never forget. Molokai is nothing for tourists who like resort life! But..... the nature far off any tourists was something for us. Whale watching from "our" beach was very special.
We can recommend this place to all people who like to have privacy and love the nature -

My wife and I are habitual visitors to Molokai having returned every Christmas for the past decade. We have always rented condos on the island but wanted to treat ourselves this year to a more private setting. Wow, did we find the most amazing, tranquil, secluded, romantic beautiful hideaway that met every expectation and then some. This location is not to be missed. We were truly blessed to have had a chance to enjoy the Hale Kai Beachfront Estate!
