Canberra, AustraliaFive nights at Hale Lei Lani
Left on 03/27/2013 for a stay in March 2013
After a week on The Big Island staying in a luxury condo in Kona and a beautiful house in Volcano village, we had high expectations for our stay in Molokai. This is a difficult review to write because there were so many great things about the house, however the lack of attention to detail detracted from the overall experience. At a nightly rate of aU$300 we had certain expectations that were not met.
The house is as it presents in the photos - mostly. Gorgeous, tropical feel and nicely decorated, comfortable furnishings and functional kitchen. However there is a reason there are no photos of the bathroom. The bathroom is in serious need of renovation. The shower stall is a small, old, plastic tray with a shower curtain that detaches from the rail when moved to get in or out of the shower. The fixture / tap in the shower has been installed by crudely hacking around the tiles and is unfinished. The vanity and toilet are probably original vintage and the supplied bath towels were very much in need of replacement.
Admittedly day one in Molokai did not get off to a great start. Go airlines cancelled our flight from Hino to Molokai without contacting us, and we spent the day making alternative arrangements. When we finally arrived at Hale Lei Lani in the evening we arrived to find the uncleaned. To be fair to the owners (us mainland based) they responded immediately to an email and arranged for the cleaner to clean the house that night. We understand things can go astray with communications but it wasn't until 9pm after the cleaning was finished could we occupy the house on our own.
The overall cleanliness of the house was also a bit of an issue relating mostly to the need to have the place fumigated. While the cleaner did a good job the first night, by the next day the floor was dotted with insects. In the bathroom the high ceiling was hosting a nest of some kind of small insect and there were cobwebs, spiders and leaf litter around the verandas indicating a spring clean was well overdue. Other guests who reviewed the house commented on enjoying the pool, but as the pool was not cleaned until the second last day of our holiday we didn't get the full benefit of that.
So while not major issues, we felt the property was a bit overpriced, especially as the owners charged aU$250 for cleaning in addition to aU$500 refundable security deposit. Our final disappointment was the time it took to reverse the security deposit back onto our credit card - exactly 20 days from the day of our departure. Perhaps it was wishful thinking that the owners would try to make good with a swift return of our deposit. Why take the deposit in the first place? Why not do what others do, ie, have credit card authority to access the funds only if there's a problem.
Last comment about location, sitting out on the balcony looking across to Maui was a stunning view, the house is very private and the half hour drive to the town and harbour was enjoyable. Guests though expecting the house to be close to a swimming or snorkelling beach might be disappointed as the closest walking beach is really a fish trap. Also the house is not on the ocean side of the highway. -

Eastern ConnecticutA special retreat from hustle-bustle...
Left on 10/14/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Hubby and I decided on Molokai as our belated 25th anniversary destination and were so lucky to find this lovely peaceful cottage. Both amy and Mark were so helpful, friendly, and professional in making our booking and stay stress free. And KB, neighbor and caretaker was there to address the few minor glitches on the property.
We loved the tropical look and feel of the cottage and found the king bed very comfy on our old bones. I think we spent as much time dipping in and lounging by the pool as we did touring the island.
Oh, the kitchen is well stocked with utensils, cookware, sharp knives, etc...good ones. I say this as many vacation homes we have rented in the past provide cheap unusable kitchen equipment.
If you decide to go to this destination, enjoy the peace, the views, the breezes, the locals... -

Beaver CreekPeaceful and serene vacation environment
Left on 11/06/2011 for a stay in October 2011
Amy and Mark have created a peaceful and serene home environment, with a private pool that was incredibly refreshing throughout the day. Listening to our own music on their Ipod docking station or listening to the Hawaiian music stations, or watching the World Series, we created our own wonderful vacation environment. We cooked amazing feasts each afternoon with the ample supplies in the kitchen, drank too many Kona beers and enjoyed Kona coffee ice cream from Dave's shop. After ten days on Molokai and a day trip to Maui, we couldn't have asked for better accomodations than Hale Lei Lani. Mahalo nui! Trudi and Ray
