Description from the manager
Yes the whales are this close! Mele Kohola means "Singing Whale" in Hawaiian and they will entertain you day and night (in season, of course, December-March). Even when the whales are not in season, you'll enjoy the unobstructed bi-coastal views
with waves crashing against the sea wall. There is a view from almost every room in the house including the front and back lanais. The ocean in front of Mele Kohola is very deep and the coastline is shaped in a gentle cove tempting the whales and dolphins
to play very close to shore.
Once inside, you will see the pride and care taken in the classy, upscale, tropical decor, with lots...Read more

This property was very nice. The furniture was in great condition and it was also very clean. The views were absolutely incredible and sunrise every morning was beautiful. We were also impressed that we were provided with drinking water and basic would have been nice if it was included in the description that the tap water was non-potable. We would not stay here again however, for only 2 reasons. The upstairs queen bed was terribly hard and uncomfortable (we tossed and turned all night) and we could not sleep in the downstairs king as the entire bottom floor had a very bad smell.

Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the location. Just to clarify, the water IS potable, we just know that some guests are wary of catchment system water. We do insure that the quaity of the tap water IS drinkable. The bottles of water are for your comfort. We're sorry about the bed and smell issues. We do have our 24hr guarantee and would have happily re-located you. Not every bed works for every body and we have not had any other complaints about this one. Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

Everything worked pretty well. Only point was that we've been unknown about the 'weather conditions' on the Hilo side of the Island. But on the other hand we’ve loved the vegetation of this area.

The location is fantastic. The view from living room is superb as shown in photos. Enjoyed the jacuzzi as well. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation on sea side, definitely go for it. Our only complain would be the utensils in the kitchen are outdated and needs to be repalced and fridge needs more cleaning. Also the twin bed room is inconvinient if there are 3 families staying as in our case. But if you don't bother about these drawbacks then the place is fantastic. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly.

Beautiful spot right on the ocean, with plenty of room for family. The drive to the house through the Ohia Lehua trees is special. The only thing we noticed needed replacing- knives, frying pans and bathroom door in master bedroom. Otherwise it was a 10!

Hi the site is lovely and the outside had been painted. The inside was a little tired up stairs. I left a list of suggested repairs like a railing for the top stairs the is continuous for us older people, a fan in main bathroom that works and more comfortable seating outside the front of the house for water watching. Downstairs was in better condition. The lovely lounge chair upstairs is fading in comfort and the blinds in the bedrooms were missing a few slats. Other than that it is a lovely house and the neighbours were very friendly. I would have wished for better weather but we got to see a different side to Hawaii than the rich resorts so that was great.

Overall, the place was wonderful. There were some minor maintenance issues when we arrived that we made known to the property company when we left (we didn't want to wait around for a handy man or have our vacation interrupted by one). If you love the sound of crashing ocean and frogs, this place is for you! The sunrises are beautiful and it's nice that the home has 2 levels so people can have their own space. It is a little far removed from anyone or anything, but mostly that was a plus. I would recommend this home.

Left on 11/02/2011 for a stay in October 2011
During our late October five night visit to Mele Kohola we watched for whales as did the neighbors who came and sat on the lava to peer out to sea. Though we saw no whales, rainbows wide, narrow, full arc, and segments surprised us all times of day and stars, planets, and the moon at night. You'll be lulled to sleep in the master BR as waves break on the clifts--reminded us of childhood nights at the beach. Our granddaughter urged us into the spa before breakfast! The location was close enough to get to Hilo quickly for Imiloa Astronomy Center's Halloween party for kids. Also ten minutes to Hawaii's best open air market--Makuu on Sundays. Since we've been to the island six times, Mele Kohola gave us a chance to stay right on the coast which we hadn't done before. We even got on good terms with he that my sister named "Rooster Cogburn"! He has a haren and several minor male underlings to whom he crows, cocks, and coos. Mahalo for a splendid vacation!

Sequim, WAGreat location
Left on 03/16/2011 for a stay in March 2011
The rental was supplied with almost everything we needed -- including umbrellas and binoculars. We did see whales in the bay two days of our stay. Being on the ocean (even during a tsunami evacuation) was beautiful. The rental agent called to warn us of the tsunami warnings. The location was rural but near enough to Hilo, Pahoa and Volcanoes National Park for day trips. Another plus was the high speed internet line which allowed us to contact family after returning from tsunami evacuation. We had been asked by government not to use phones during evacuation to keep lines open for emergency personnel.
There were a few things that need to be addressed to make stays more pleasant for guests. One of the features listed for the rental was a hot tub, which we looked forward to using. However, the cover was very heavy (water-logged, which occurs with covers)and deteriorated. It was difficult and awkward to remove the cover, even for two people working at it. Since covers on hot tubs become water-logged over time, most people have a cover lift (hinged metal bar) to make cover removal easy. We only used the hot tub twice in a two week stay. Also, the screens on the sliding doors did not slide easily, but we finally got them to work more easily by spraying the sliding track with WD40. We would suggest housekeeper spray them prior to each guests stay. It would also be nice to have either a dust mop or broom in the house to use for sweeping the floor, so a vacuum did not have to be used. The check-out info posted on the refrigerator listed an item about leaving the key and remote for the gate on the kitchen counter. Those were not there when we arrived and I told the rental agent that the item needs to be deleted from the check-out instructions.
We enjoyed our two weeks at Mele Kohola which were restful and relaxing. We discovered that the area on Beach Rd (one road uphill from house) was a great place for walking, fishing and had public area w -

This property was even better than we had imagined! The location was better than I can describe. The house was spotless and appeared to be professionally furnished and decorated. The road to the property is wavy, but so worth it! I would love to live in this house full-time. We will absolutely be back as much as possible! Don't hesitate on this property. It has easy access to Hilo, the Volcano and the Macadamia Nut Factory. The guest book at the house is a good read. The croquis and roosters just added to the entire experience. This is truly paradise at the end of Paradise Road!

Keaau, HIWhales!
Left on 02/24/2011 for a stay in February 2011
We really enjoyed our weekend at Mele Kohala. We went there to whale watch from the upstairs lanai and we were not disappointed. The house is very close to the water and we could easily watch the whales with the naked eye.
The house inside is beautifully decorated and the furnishing are upscale. I was happy to see the kitchen stocked with spices, oils, etc. which made meal preparation much easier. I have only 2 recommendations. The kitchen could use a coffee grinder. We brought whole bean coffee to the house and any dedicated coffee drinker will tell you, the ground stuff just won't cut it. We were also told that there are plans for a TV to be installed upstairs. I would prefer to have the TV there since it was cumbersome to take food/dishes downstairs while we watched the Super Bowl.
We were very impressed with how the property management staff handled the one problem we had while staying there. The hot tub wasn't working so we called the contact number we were given. They took the info and called us back within an hour to let us know that they were sorry but the part the hot tub needed was not available so it could not be fixed. They could easily have ignored the call since it came in on a Saturday afternoon. When I contacted them after checkout and shared my disappointment since the hot tub was one of the reasons we had chosen to stay there, they made an accomodation which was more than fair.
My husband and I will plan on staying there next year during whale watching season. I recommend Mele Kohala without hesitation.Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 02/24/2011

The location and condition of this unit was a pleasant surprise. Stocked well with minimum essentials and amenities as well as unused items from previous guests. We moved from another rental in Kapoha to be closer to family. The Management and cleaning staff could not have been nicer allowing us to move some items into the garage before check in time.
Only suggestion, although minor, would be to add a second TV.
Would definitely stay here a again. -

Ocean front with no obstructed view of the ocean. The house is very clean and neat. Price is very reasonable. We had a great time staying in the house for 5 nights. My kids will remember the night bird chirping for the rest of their life. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone who come to me for recommendations. You can't swim because it is not on the beach though. So it is not for someone who is looking for a beach front property.

Left on 09/12/2010 for a stay in September 2010
First sight of the ocean view from Mele Kohola's lanai stole our breath away. After our first sunrise, we woke up every morning without an alarm, well-ahead of the event to catch the warm colors of twilight through the ever-changing cloud formations. The mini-rainshowers every night gave new meaning to a new, fresh day. While not secluded, the location seemed very private because the ocean is such a presence here. The house itself was furnished nicely and was very clean.

Just wanted to say that the house was really good. Only problem is that we all got very sick after being there 2 days. 3 of us got respiratory infections, 4 of us got coughs, 1 of us got an eye infection, all of us got really bad sore throats. We know it was something in the house, because 2 of our friends came over to visit one day, and they are both now sick with the same symptoms. It's been 1 week since we all got back, and we're still sick. You may want to check to see if your house has black mold. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we will not be back.

We take all feedback and concerns over our properties seriously and the guests wrote us after they left regarding this. While we are sympathetic that they were ill, they had told us they has all flown in from different places (they were a large party) and since we have had no other complaints of this nature, including the current guest, our conclusion was that they brought something in from one of the flights, and this is not a problem with the house.

The lanai views were stunning, spent much time there. The lay out was great for one large or two small families, or an extra married couple. Loved the ambiance and furnishings. We were inspired to cook but the knives were almost useless unfortunately. Due to the catchment system we were a little unclear as to the water safety, get clarity from the managers, its better/safer than the registration packet suggests. Strong positive vibe here. Would definitely return!

Albuquerque, NMMele Kohala has a lot to offer!
Left on 06/18/2009 for a stay in June 2009
The home is in a beautiful location, right on the water with breathtaking views! It's roomy and was large enough for a 7-member adult family to spread out and not be cramped. The humidity is high there, so be prepared for things to feel damp! There is a rooster next-door who will be sure to wake you up EARLY every morning, but he can be drowned out by box fans. The house isn't air-conditioned but the ocean breezes make it very comfortable. The last 3 miles of the road to the house is VERY bumpy and caused a few of the family members to get car-sick, but we got used to it by the end of our stay. The property manager responded immediately to our only problem with the alarm system. He even provided a portable crib for out 2-year-old. Communication with the property managers was very good. Check-in and check-out were easy and well-explained before we got there. Be sure to take in the Volcano National Park and the tidepool parks on the far side of a Pahua. There are also gorgeous waterfalls and a 2-mile lava tube to be explored in Hilo. Uncle Billy's in Hilo is a nice place to have dinner. Ken's Pancake House in Hilo has great pancakes with a local flavor. Pahua has the Black Rock Cafe, a cute local restaurant with good food and nice people. You'll enjoy your stay there!!! Recommend it highly!

This is a beautiful property in a prime location for people who want to be near the ocean and nature 24/7. The house offers panoramic views of the beautiful volcanic coastline and ocean. One day we were thrilled to see whales spouting and jumping in the ocean all from our living room and lanai. We were very blessed to spend a month in this lovely home and found it perfect for relaxing around the house or short day trips. Mele Kohola is close to many sites plus you can get to any destination on the island in approximately 2 1/2-3 hours. The property managers are wonderful to work with and are always pleasant, helpful and conscientious. They made our vacation easy to plan and provided many amenities and tips that made our stay more comfortable. This is our second time staying at Mele Kohola and we sincerely hope that we have the good fortune of a third visit in the future!
