I can't thank Bob enough for his great correspondence and hospitality. All four of us were just continuously speechless about the property. Each step we took was "Wow, Look over here and look at this". What a wonderful location too amongst all the surrounding vineyards. I would be happy to share anything I can with whom ever may need questions answered.

We stayed at the Sonoma Farmhouse to attend a wedding in Sonoma. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The grounds are incredible! The home was very comfy for the 5 of us. Bob was a pleasure to do business with. Would highly recommend this house.

My husband and I stayed here with another couple to celebrate our anniversaries. Bob was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. We loved everything about the rental: the beautiful landscaping, the peace and quiet, the tasteful decor, and the cute little quail! It all contributed to a very memorable weekend with great friends. Thank you so much for making this wonderful property available for rental!

My experience at Sonoma Farmhouse was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had. The website is easy to navigate and comprehensive as a planning tool. Even better, Robert McDonald is extremely gracious and accessible in effort to make planning and your stay feel like home. The property and home is beautiful. Clean, private, cozy and just the right distance to and from major Sonoma attractions. A great idea for a romantic or family/friend getaway. Next visit will come soon and will definitely be a longer stay!

I can't say enough good things about Sonoma Farmhouse! The property was as beautiful as described, and it made for a fabulous weekend getaway in a relaxed "country" setting that was also close to great things to do/see/drink/eat in Sonoma wine country.
The house has every amenity, including the most comfortable beds we've every had the pleasure of sleeping in.
The property manager was professional, friendly, and quick to respond to my initial inquiry as well as provide details about the property and area both before and during our stay.I look forward to visiting their other rental properties in Sonoma. -

Left on 12/26/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We absolutely loved our place! Some friends came over for dinner one night and couldn't believe how beautiful the grounds, pool, bocce ball court, and home were. They were paying approximately the same price at a B&B; in Napa for a room! Bob was great to work with, making sure we had everything we needed. When we go again, I would love to be able to use the pool. We went the middle of October and the heater was turned off already. We already knew that we loved the Sonoma and Healdsburg areas and it was central to both, as well as Napa. The little Italian restaurant just up the road, (you could walk if you wanted) was excellent! We ate there two out of three nights! We will definitely stay here again.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Sonoma Farmhouse for 3 days in august and absolutely loved it. The house was clean, cozy, modern and well-decorated and had most of the amenities that we needed. It's a shame (almost) that we hardly spent any time in it.
You'll understand when you see the backyard. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with stunning views of vineyards and mountains. Our kids (5 and 7) never left the pool, which may look small in the photos, but was perfect for them. We adults spent our days lounging by the patio and grill and enjoying adult beverages. Nights were spent around the fire pit roasting marshmallows and enjoying, er, more adult beverages (mornings were a little rougher).
Location gets 4 stars. It's very quiet (never heard any road noise), and you definitely feel like you're in the heart of wine country. We weren't, however, as lucky as previous reviewers when it came to restaurant choices in Kenwood. Fortunately the Fig Cafe (no corkage!) is in nearby Glen Ellen.
As for service, Robert was very responsive and a pleasure to work with. A really, really nice guy.
I highly recommend the Sonoma Farmhouse. We'll definitely be back. -

We loved staying here! It was just me and a friend, but we both agreed that it would be an ideal place for 2 couples. It was private, cozy, comfortable, and in a great location between Sonoma and Santa Rosa. Though they had everything we needed, we missed having a microwave and wished that there was a bolt or some sort of safer lock once inside. Anyone with a key could come in and we wanted a little more security. Other than that...perfection!

Left on 09/08/2011 for a stay in August 2011
What a wonderful property. It was centrally located to all of the wineries that we planned to visit and was absolutely gorgeous. Going with two couples, the fact that the property offered a separate main home and a guest house offered ideal space and privacy. The grounds were more than everything pictured/promised. They were in beautiful condition and the pool, hot tub, bocce court, outdoor kitchen, fire pit were all fantastic. It was so nice to be able to come "home" after a day out and be able to prepare a meal ourselves and relax.
I've already told everyone I can about what a wonderful place this was and would recommend it to anyone looking to rent a home in the Kenwood area. When we go back, we definitely plan to use this as our first choice for a place to stay. -

Left on 08/14/2011 for a stay in August 2011
Sonoma Farmhouse-Country is a lovely property, I'd say about 1/2 way between Sonoma and Santa Rosa. This makes it the perfect spot to visit wineries that are close to it (Kunde, Chateau St. Jean, Landmark, Ledson etc.), as well as the lovely Ca Olive Oil company right at the end of the street. It is a quick hop, skip, and jump over to a great little store in Glen Ellen.
The Farmhouse itself is clean, modern, and decorated like House Beautiful. Same for the little carriage house. The grounds are lovely and we enjoyed seeing and watching quail, rabbits, coyotes under the grapes, geckos, vultures, hummingbirds, and all manner of song birds. Great, great, great. It was especially wonderful to spend the day wine tasting and then come back and jump in the pool. Then? Just sit and watch the vineyard, wildlife, hear the birds, and enjoy the day.
Why is my rating only "Very Good"? Well, there are a few things that we would like to see upgraded and/or changed here. First off, the lighting in the main house's bathroom doesn't afford anyone to really see. While it is obviously decorated in a period manner...please put in some light so someone could at least see to shave at the medicine cabinet. Second (and it doesn't just happen here it happens all over) - why, oh why, do innkeepers/rental keepers put in queen sized beds? In both the house and cottage they have large bedrooms big enough to accomodate king sized beds. Doesn't almost everyone you know sleep in a king sized bed at home? I know we and everyone we know do. Please - spend the few extra dollars and put in decent mattresses on a king sized bed. Third - be aware there is an extra charge of $25 if you want to use the laundry. This we believe is absurd because you're already paying a premium for this premises. And, unless you're a baseball team staying there, how many loads of laundry is someone going to do? There should not be any additional charge for this.
The only other negative is the kitchen - there is simply no counter space. It would be nice if there were a rolling butcher block top or something...but I don't know how that might screw up the look of the place.
All in all, Sonoma Farmhouse Country is a great rental, lovely grounds, good host, quiet, convenient to wineries, etc. We would stay here again and, in fact, would love to check out their other properties.
Stay here. You won't be disappointed.Response from Robert McDonald - 09/06/2011

Dear Sonoma Farmhouse Guest
Thank you so much for your comments. They are appreciated and I am glad you loved staying at our home. I hope that we see you back soon. I want to share some responses to lighting, bedding, our kitchen size and laundry fee. We hope that these responses give you a little more reasoning to why we do what we do at Sonoma Farmhouse.
I am glad you brought up the lighting in the bathrooms. When we remodled our California home in 2009 we were required to go through extensive building permit plans and inspections. The California Uniform Building Code limited the number of lights we could have in both bathrooms and required that they be fluorescent. I hate fluorescent lighting so I opted for 2 sconces next to the mirror instead of one overhead light (our option). There is nothing worse than seeing your face downlighted with a fluorescent bulb. We are not allowed to add any new fixtures to our bathroom (LEGALLY), so the best we can say is that Sonoma Farmhouse is green and energy efficient. That seems to be where everything is heading anyway.
Since this place is our home, we chose and prefer a queen-sized bed to sleep in. We make it clear in our property description that we have a queen bed, so those folks that require more room and space to sleep are aware before they sign our agreement. A smaller bed is a smaller footprint and it gives us more space in the room when we use it as our home. I trust you enjoyed our upgraded beds with memory foam pads and upgraded linens for sleeping. We have had many people comment on how comfortable these beds were and wanted to know where we bought them. I hope this might have mitigated to some extent the smaller bed.
I would love to have a bigger kitchen too! But the main house is only 600 square feet and built for 2 people. An island in the house would take up the dinning area and living space, and we really enjoy playing cards on that dinning room table as well as having a glass a wine with our friends in the evening. Since our home is so small we built a state of the art outdoor kitchen with 8 burner grill, sink with disposal, large island and sitting area and refrigerator. We cook most of our meals outside beginning in April and really grill and cook until mid-November. The lighting outside allows us to cook all night long. We had a small rolling cutting block table in the kitchen space originally, but we had more people tell us that they prefer to cook outside and requested that this be moved out because it was in the way. It is in our shed, so we can always bring it in for guests needing more cooking room and less entertaining space.
We try to keep our prices around $100 a night per person. This is much more reasonable than any hotel in the area, and for a brand new home with the amentifies that we offer, reasonable for a vacation rental in Sonoma Valley. But to do that we have to find ways to reduce our energy bill, which could be as high as $1,000.00 per month in the summer. Since our home is all electric (NO GAS) the laundry is where we choose to do this. We wash all of our linens off-site to save electricity costs and use gas. We DO however offer FREE laundry to those guests staying for one week or more. We figure if you are staying for a week, it is reasonable to expect a place to wash your clothes. However for those weekend wine warriors, we charge a fee for laundry. More people have told us that they prefer to bring a few extra clothes and spend a few less dollars on their lodging fee. So we LOWERED our nightly rental fee from its 2009-10 rate, and created a user fee for laundry for those that choose to use this service.
I hope that you come back and stay with us again. We really take pride in our home, keeping it in perfect shape for us and for those who choose to stay with us. We want everyone to have a positive lasting impression of our home and the Sonoma Valley.

Cincinnati, OHFantastic Wine Country Vacation Home & Cottage
Left on 06/07/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We just left Sonoma Country Farmhouse in Kenwood after 4 wonderful days of vacation there. We've rented homes in various locations around the us more than 20 times and this house and guest house are now on the top of my list! This is an absolutely wonderful property that consists of a small one bedroom house with an adjacent, but entirely separate, one bedroom guest house. This was perfect for my group as we had two couples traveling together.
The houses and the entire property were impeccably maintained and clean. The landscaping in particular was spectacular. We spent many relaxing hours outside in the hot tub, on the bocce court, or around the fire pit after our busy days visiting vineyards in Sonoma and Napa Valleys. A truly relaxing experience.
The owner of this property could not have been more courteous and prompt in his replies to me whether via email or telephone. I cannot recall any previous vacation home owner or rental agency that has been more professional and polite than Bob.
This location in general worked out very well for us. I had researched many other options for lodging both in Napa Valley and in Sonoma Valley. Being in Kenwood within Sonoma Valley was great. We were not only able to very easily visit the vineyards in Sonoma but had access to Napa Valley within a 30 - 40 minute drive via either Trinity Road or Calistoga Road right off of Sonoma Hwy (Hwy 12). Now having seen both valleys at length, I would recommend staying in Sonoma Valley both from an experience and expense perspective.
Finally, I am so glad that we rented a property like this rather than staying at a hotel or bed and breakfast in either Sonoma or Napa. Being able to come back to our houses and our own grounds (with our own hot tub, pool, outdoor kitchen, etc. ) was great. I'm absolutely certain we had a much better vacation here because of our good fortune to find Sonoma Country Farmhouse.
I can strongly recommend this property to anyone!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Sonoma Country Farmhouse, and from the beginning, our stay was truly a fantastic experience. When you stay at the house, you have access to the gorgeous grounds, which are immaculately maintained. You'll see idyllic views of a vineyard and mountains in the backyard. There's no noise or traffic, and the surrounding area is quite safe. We especially loved the outdoor grilling area - perfect for enjoying a freshly cooked meal with a bottle of wine. We'd recommend staying here over a B&B; or hotel... and we found the Sonoma region to be even more pleasant than Napa.
We can't wait to come back with friends! -

This is a wonderful "double" rental. The main home has master suite and a "great room"--fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living room, and dining room for 6-8. The "carriage house" is a studio apartment with the original carriage house double doors (with a sign that reads "please do no open these doors"--which makes you want to do nothing more than open the doors, even though the thought of opening to doors hadn't crossed your mind before reading the sign.) The amenities are high-end, but still comfortable, homey, and inviting. Perfect for a weekend away for two couples.
The grounds are stunning--wonderful landscaping. The outdoor kitchen was tempting, but there are so many wonderful restaurants in the area that we ended up not taking advantage of it. We did, however, avail ourselves of the hot tub, and ate breakfast outdoors on the lovely patio.
We had previously spent more time in Napa than in Sonoma, and were delighted with charming downtown Sonoma, wonderful wineries, and excellent restaurant choices. -

I stayed at the Sonoma Farmhouse in Kenwood last August for my birthday weekend and had an amazing time! Both of the buildings are clean, well decorated and very well appointed. But mostly I was blown away by how beautiful the grounds are. The pool was perfect for the hot days, the spa was perfect for the cool nights and the Bocce Ball Court was great with a glass of wine in hand. I would highly recommend this property to anyone and everyone!
