Description from the manager

Stunning scenery surrounds this two bedroomed cottage which sleeps 4. Located close to Bassenthwaite Lake and Whinlatter Forest with beautiful views over the cottage style garden and fields towards the Skiddaw range. There are numerous walking opportunities directly from the door.

The north lakeland village of Thornthwaite is located just 3 miles north west of Keswick, between the eastern fringe of Whinlatter Forest and southern edge of Bassenthwaite Lake. Many footpaths surround the village with several routes into Whinlatter Forest including a popular footpath from the centre of the village which leads up beside the tumbling waters of...Read more

      Lived up to expectations

Left on 03/27/2013 for a stay in March 2013

The cottage took a while to warm up when we got there, but it is an old cottage. Everything worked and contained all you could possibly need in terms of cooking etc.

The gas fire (log-burner lookalike) in the living room created a cosy atmosphere on the cold nights (it snowed while we were there!). There were also loads of interesting books, OS maps, and Dvds that we didnt know would be there. The conservatory (including eating area) was great, overlooking the garden and the lake.

Take some bird feed and you will gets lots of birds visiting, including spotted woodpeckers. The bathroom upstairs is 'height restricted' (to say the least) so I bumped my head a few times. If you are over 6 feet tall this might be a problem. The electric shower was a bit weak, but that is a minor quibble.

Overall, a very enjoyable stay. Short drive to Keswick and lovely beauty spots, including Thornthwaite forest, Borrowdale and Thirlmere.

The lovely view from the conservatory/patio.

Superb quality cottage in a fantastic setting

Left on 08/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012

This is a wonderful cottage located down a quiet track, with just a few other properties. There's a footpath down to Bassenthwaite Lake, where we all swam. And the imposing Barf Fell towers above the cottage - a great if precarious scramble, and one which doesn't attract many other people - we managed it without meeting another soul on a wonderfully sunny morning. I can't recommend this cottage enough, it has everything you need and is spacious enough not to feel hemmed in when the weather turns wet (especially with our two kids in tow). The garden is also big, with dramatic views over Bassenthwaite lake and up to Skiddaw. Pubs and a village shop in Braithwaite are an easy cycle ride away (10-15 mins); and Keswick not far either. We have already vowed to return.

A delightfull, warm and relaxing cottage for a holiday

Left on 05/24/2012 for a stay in May 2012

We initally called this a holiday cottage in the title, but it is more than this, it is a home! A great base to explore the Lake District and to come home to. The character and location are second to none. The shower is a little short on head height, but so what! Relax and have a bath for a change. In the name of the great shakespearian actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger --- We'll be Back.

A home from home in a fabulous location!

Left on 04/25/2012 for a stay in April 2012

An extremely comfortable cottage in an amazing location overlooking Lake Bassenthwaite. The owners have worked hard to make this a special place to stay with lots of homely touches and facilities. The cottage is well placed to explore the Northern Lakes with walks and wildlife on the doorstep. We would thoroughly recommend this property.

Beautiful location, pity about the bathroom

Left on 11/10/2011 for a stay in September 2011

The cottage was easy to find, comfortable and well appointed. The bathroom was a problem because it was necessary to bend practically double to enter the door and not possible to stand fully upright in the shower (I am only about 5ft 10") The view of Bassenthwaite and Sciddaw was wonderful and the cottage was well located for access both to the fells and Keswick for shopping. The noise of traffic on the a66 was noticeable but not unacceptable. We felt that the welcome in the Holiday Cottage was not warm and very matter-of fact and disinterested.

Lovely quaint cottage but bathroom and shower room is difficult to use if you are tall. Bedrooms lovely but new mattresses should be provided as not very comfortable.
