Great cottage. Well-equipped and comfortable, lots of lovely walks nearby, good views from inside. Shop is quite a long walk away in the next village - 3 pubs in next village too. You can't actually see the mountain view from the outside seating area, but otherwise all good and as described.
Peaceful Location Ideal for Walking

Vermont is a spacious, well-equipped cottage in the quiet village of Thornthwaite, near Keswick. Within a few minutes of walking out of the door you can be on the footpath over to Whinlatter Forestry Centre, the footpath to Braithwaite or the back road/path to Bassenthwaite. We saw red squirrel and deer in the woods.
The amenities of Keswick are a short drive away, with Penrith a little further away. There are things to do for all ages close at hand but we liked the walking best!
good value for money

A well- equipped, clean home in a peaceful village with fantastic views of the fells. A short distance from the town of Keswick, the Theatre by the Lake and Derwent Water cruises, there's plenty to see and do whether you're an intrepid fell-walker or just looking for a relaxing rural getaway. I loved the views from the upper level windows and the short walk to Thornthwaite Gallery.
Externally awful, internally not bad, but could easily be improv

On arrival we were greeted by a totally overgrown and neglected garden. Hedges had not been touched for what looked like years, the front door could only be reached by pushing through overgrown shrubbery and the sitting out area was equally unattractive. There was even a clothes airer stuck high in an embankment with no means of access and one would have had to have been 8 ft tall to reach it! There was also a huge shrub growning over the laundry and what was a garage, though totally un-usable as such. Views of the beautiful surrounding areas were also curtailed by the un-necessarily high and negleted hedges.
Add to this was a huge pile of rubbish bags at the entrance, though one cannot blame the owners for that. Fortunately it was cleared by the Council a couple of days later.
Inside the property was servicable. The upstairs bedroom required constant vigilance to ensure one did not crack one's head on one of the beams, but having the upstairs sitting room was a bonus.
A few minor items. There were no towel rails upstairs, no mirror in the upstairs bathroom which made shaving difficult, there were no airers to dry clothes, the plastic cutlery holder in the dishwasher was rotten (cutlery fell out of the bottom unless one was careful).
The location was fine with easy access to Keswick and the northern lakes area. It was nice having the Gallery nearby (for coffees etc).
Frankly we were just a bit disappointed. We wrote to the owners via the agents with some photos and the above details and suggestions but got no response, though the owners did call, unfortunatly when my wife and I were out, as we had had a minor problem with the toaster which they replaced.

Excellent cottage in a beautiful location. Well equipped with all you need for a self catering holiday. Thornthwaite is a peaceful little place with a lovely gallery.
We were on a cycling holiday and the little laundry room was ideal for storing bikes& equipment. We had stunning weather which just made this a fabulous stay, breakfast & lunch alfresco in the garden most days, we ate out each evening, lots of choice in Keswick and surrounding areas, if you get the chance visit Go ape in Whinlatter Forest -surreal experience!
Can't wait to return to the area
A family reunion in a beautiful setting

My family gathered in Vermont at Easter. We came from three counties and our party included a baby. The house was very clean, large enough for us all to gather together and yet to find space when we needed some quiet time. The views towards Skiddaw are beautiful and there are walks from the house. There was plenty of cooking equipment and quick dishwasher, or Keswick just a short drive for eating out or a take away. The beds were comfortable and the house very warm. All three cars were parked off road.
Coat pegs behind the bedroom doors or a coat stand for dry coats, and some coats pegs in the utility for the inevitable wet coats would have saved us draping them over leather dining chairs and dripping on to the lovely oak floor! But that said we had a truely relaxing break in an absolutely beautiful setting. Would go again tomorrow!

Enjoyed our stay in Vermont very much, we were lucky enough to have wonderful weather so could really appreciate the stunning views from the windows. A very comfortable and warm property and also very spacious with both upstairs and downstairs lounges. Spotlessly clean and everything you need to hand. Recommend highly.

Very highly recommended - good spec, plenty of space, modern, clean and well turned out. Quiet location, lovely walks from the door - a great family home.
Just a few small details could make it perfect - somewhere to hang coats and boots, mirrors in the bathrooms, coat hooks in the bathrooms, sheets on the bed
Well appointed with beautifull views
