      This was an awesome condo

Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in March 2013

My husband, daughter, and I stayed at this condo March 28th for 1 week and it was absolutely wonderful. The condo was immaculate, very spacious, and the beds were comfortable. Being the Keys, I expected to see some bugs as we had in Orlando a couple of years ago. But too my pleasant surprise, not one bug! Everything is updated in the condo. Fully stocked so you can prepare your meals as we did. The grounds were beautiful and the pool was great. Nice and comfortably warm. We felt very at home here, as though we truly lived here. The neighbor next door, Bill, was very helpful as was everyone else that we met. If we return to the Keys, we will definitely stay here. We rented directly from the owner, Carolee Penza, but was handled through Barefeet Rentals. They were both nice to deal with. We really enjoyed John Pennekamp State Park for the off beach snorkeling. We were told there was not any good snorkeling off the beach, but we had a great snorkeling exp off the beach at this state park. You can see the fish at ankle deep water off the rocks. They sunk some cannons there to attract fish. You don't see the reef though but we didn't mind. We also went on a snorkle tour boat with Keys Diver in Key Largo, and it was horrible. The chop was so bad that almost the entire boat was sick including my daughter and me. This snorkle company mimimized how bad the conditions were to get the business it appeared. The dive master, Tim, however was wonderful in helping me and my daughter and was very attentive. I was thankful for that. Overall, I strongly recommend this condo at Kawama if you are going to Key Largo. We travelled to all of the keys for day trips and enjoyed Key Largo the best. Marathon was nice for the Dolphin Research Center swim with dolphins program. And Bahia Honda State Park was great (Big Pine Key I think). The Keys deer really do come up to you. We drove down a gravel road, got out of car, and they came right up to me. Overall a great trip.

Overall the property was in need of some serious updating!

Left on 02/02/2012 for a stay in December 2011

The condo was tidy, but not clean It would appear the cleaning staff rush through their clean and do not do a thorough enough cleaning and checking the premises when renters change over. A check list for the cleaning staff might prove to be helpful. The floor plan of the condo allowed for an open and roomy feel, but with this being said, the couch was a good 15 feet from the TV unit which was extremely small, so if seated on the couch you would need a magnifying glass or hawk eyes to see. The VCR did not work. The kitchen had dirty dishes and several cups and saucers, which had evidently been used by previous renters as ashtrays, were put back in the cupboards without being cleaned. This also applied to some of the linens in the linen closets. Oil kept mysteriously appearing on the stove top. The bath mats were thread bare and dirty. The garbitrator was completely clogged and not useable. The kitchen had 6 wine bottle openers, but not one can opener! The kitchen table only seats four and as we had 6 in our party we used the patio chairs and crowded around the table. The King master bed was like a rock and the mattress cover kept bunching under while sleeping. Investing in a mattress pad that actually covered the mattress or even the little elastic corner mattress cover holders would go a long way in making the bed more comfortable. The other 2 beds in the guest room were shot and need replacing. Don't sleep on them if you have back issues. The new "tower" pool , was clean, warm and inviting. The advertised beach is absolutely disgusting and the beach furniture is falling apart The advertised outdoor grills were in worse shape then the beach furniture! I wouldn't even attempt to cook on them for fear of them disintegrating before my eyes. We realize that the issues regarding the beach, the beach furniture and the outdoor grills were of no fault of the condo owner or the rental agency, but should be updated in the description, perhaps even removed.
Overall, when we contacted the rental agent regarding the garbitrator and the bath mats, they immediately sent maintenance for the repair of the garbritator and the mysterious appearing oil and the cleaning company to replace the bath mats. We had mentioned the dirty dishes and linens, but informed her not worry about those as we had already looked after cleaning them. More for her knowledge than anything else. The rental agent was extremely helpful and very attentive to any concerns we had with regards to the condo.
The condo is a great location for those who want to tour about the keys, walk to the local bar for happy hour, or visit John Pennekamp for diving, or relax by the pool. Value for rental price, although as previously stated by myself and other renters, needs a few dollars spent on upgrading, such as a fresh coat of paint, new mattresses for all the beds, new linens, a larger TV and DVD player, perhaps even a real dining table & chairs that do seat the 6 the condo advertises sleeping.
Overall, the rental agency was excellent. Dealt with any and all concerns immediately. The overall the condo property was clean. I would recommend to friends and perhaps even return myself, but I would certainly bring along some of the amenities that were absent to make my stay more enjoyable.

An interesting mix of good and bad...

Left on 03/15/2011 for a stay in March 2011

This is a rather odd place. The cold war between 3 different homeowners associations has left the Kawama Yacht Club property in lockdown mode. There is a guard at the entrance, severe tire damage if you reverse at the guard house, a key required to use the elevator, other keys for the tennis courts, plastic pool bands for entrance to the pool that you are "supposed" to use (it is very nice and new so that was fine). The atmosphere is a little unwelcoming---most residents don't seem to love having vacationing renters living among them if only for a few days.

We were there with our college age adult children and we stayed in the Kawama Tower. The condo was large and clean. It had adequate beds and sofas but the dining table sat only four so mealtime was pretty informal by necessity. There was a kitchen counter with two bar stools for the extra two diners. The living room had a couch and love seat but there was plenty of room for an easy chair and some better reading light. The small TV was 10 feet across the room and a little hard to see at that distance. Our main complaint was that the linens on the beds and the table and kitchen linens as well as the bath towels had not been replced in recent memory. You could literally see through the sheets on the master bedroom king. The placemats were frayed and the towels were clean but washed thin and had ragged edges. These days, linens in even moderately priced hotels have become a priority. An expenditure of even $300 would have made a massive difference in the feel of the place. If it were my condo, I would have done some fresh painting (in a color other than bland white) and spent some money on making it inviting (lose the cheap plastic flowers and Walmart linens). We actually had a fine time, but a little sprucing up would go a long way in making this particular condo a better rental choice and a more profitable venture for the owner.

Response from Joe Penza - 03/31/2011

We read your review on FlipKey and we would like to address some of your concerns. We pay an agent in Key Largo for the main purpose of handling any situations that may come up. Had you contacted their office or emailed us, your comments could have been handled during your stay.

To my knowledge, there are two homeowner associations and have been for many years. There has always been a guard at the entrance....this is for security purposes. We give the names of our renters to the guard so that they can easily come and go. There is also a private keyed elevator for Tower guests and residents. This, too, is for security purposes.

The pool is new and it also is for use of Tower guests and residents only. This keeps the pool area from being crowded. That is the reason for the pool bands. I am sorry you found the atmosphere unwelcoming....it is a beautiful facility and we have never had anyone else mention this.

We are constantly replacing linens and towels as well as dishes, glasses, etc. We have a cleaning staff that is supposed to let us know when the linens need replacing but they do not always keep us informed. We do the best we can to make the place as comfortable and pleasant as possible. This is a family owned unit and we try to do everything possible to please our guests.

      Relaxing stay!

Left on 08/04/2010 for a stay in May 2010

We spent 3 nights here in May - the location was great, really close to Pennekamp State Park for snorkeling. We didn't use the pool area much but we could see that it was very nice. The unit itself was comfortably furnished and the kitchen was well stocked with all utensils we could need. We enjoyed spending evenings on the balcony. Would stay here again!
