Elk RiverMn Family scuba adventure
Left on 12/27/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This unit was fabulous! We enjoyed having a place to be a family and not stuffed into hotel rooms. Our family traveled with Grandma, and this unit had everything needed to allow her daily freedom on the main level while we were out scuba diving without having to climb steps to the kitchen. Our kids enjoyed having the space and freedom the condo provides. Having the washer & dryer allowed for lighter packing. It was very hot while we were there so we spent most of our time scuba diving...but youngest did swim in pool...she loved it! It was fun to walk along the marina and view the wild life. It was a real pleasure to rent from Vivian and we would definitely rent from her when we travel to Key Largo.

Deerfield Beach, FlDo nothing or do it all!
Left on 11/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Our family has stayed at this villa two years in row and we are looking forward to going back again. It is
conveniently located within an hour's drive from Miami and just minutes from anywhere in Key Largo. So whether you want to enjoy the water, the rest of the keys, or just the ocean view from the villa there is something for everyone.
The villa is clean and stocked with everything we needed and the layout is perfect. The tennis courts, pools, and marina are all within a few minutes walk. I would highly recommend this villa to any family that wants to get away from it all and enjoy the laid back feel of the keys. -

Pompano Beach, FloridaUnforgettable!
Left on 10/11/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Really loved this villa! It's beautifully decorated and spacious. It was immaculate with plenty of bed linens and towels and a fully stocked kitchen! The use of the golf cart was awesome!
If you love to dive this is the place for you! The reefs are directly offshore. Pennekamp is just north of Kawama. Plenty of dive shops to get air and charters galore!
We launched and docked our boat right at the marina and Tucker, the dockmaster and his wife, Gin, were a huge help. Loading and unloading the boat from the villa was a breeze, it's very close from the back porch to the dock. We parked the trailer in the designated lot. Loved not having to pull the boat in and out each day.
We launched our kayaks right off the dock out back. Plenty of places to explore, Rodriguez Key being one of them.
There were colorful chairs, tables and tiki huts along the point too. Just a short wade or swim past the turtle grass and it's a whole other world under the sea. Snorkeling, we saw starfish, sea biscuits, big sting rays, you name it, we saw it! Along the shore was very clean. Don't expect a sandy beach, that's not how the Keys are.
There was a huge saltwater lagoon with swim platforms and lots of fish! It's a really pretty walk around it too. It's surrounded by other units.
Kawama is really close to tons of restaurants, grocery stores, dive shops, anything you need is a short drive away.
I loved that the villa was so close to the ocean! Vivian was amazing; extremely accommodating and answered every question promptly! We love it there, it's close to home and we plan on going back!
Thank you for sharing your tropical paradise with us, it was unforgettable!Response from VIvian - 10/12/2011

Greensboro, North CarolinaA great villa in a resort that has seen better days
Left on 07/22/2011 for a stay in July 2011
This is a truly charming home - very tastefully decorated and supplied with all the necessary amenities. Vivian is quick to respond to any questions, and is very helpful. Keep in mind that the unit has what is called a "reversed floor plan" with the kitchen and the main living area upstairs to maximize the view. The upstairs is accessible by a metal spiral staircase. The kids' bedroom/bathroom and a Den are dowstairs. The views from the upstairs balcony are really spectacular!
The resort itself has seen better days, and those days were probably a few years ago. To begin with, there are no trash bins anywhere on the property or the beach area, except two designated dumpster spots for the whole huge territory of the resort. In a week we have also not seen anybody cleaning up the grounds at all. Which basically means that there is a ton on trash on the beach, right at the entrance to the water, and even in the water around the jetty (we snorkled there and saw a great number of beer bottles, cans, plastic jugs and other debris among the rocks). I would not even enter the water from the beach area because in high tide you need to literally walk through a knee high garbage pile floating at the water's edge. I could not even imagine that places like that exist in the us. In low tide you simply have to walk through piles of seagrass mixed up with piles of garbage at the beach to get to the water. I have seen broken off pieces of glass in the water. So wearing rubber soled shoes is a must. I asked an HOa employee who works as a security guard at the entrance gate and rides around the territory every so often as to why the beach was in such delapidated condition. And he explained that this beach does not belong to the resort, that it is privately owned, and that since the owner is not removing the trash, the HOa does not feel it has to do that either. A very strange logic, in my opinion! Lack of maintenance is evident everywhere: there is a broken fire pit at the beach, the benches in the gazebo at the end of the jetty were broken, too.
While we stayed there, the marina was undergoing renovations, so make sure the work is over when you rent if you want to avoid the noise, construction mess, and even the smell of some stagnant water (maybe this was coming from the rotting sea weed on the beach, but the beach is not in the immediate proximity, so I was under the impression that that smell came from the marina especially since the water there was covered with some unsightly blobs of some marine growth (fungus? weeds?) on the surface.
The pools are rather small, but OK, and the lagoon is not suitable for snorkeling at all - the water is not clear enough. We saw children swimming around the platform, but after a brief exploratory plunge we had no desire to come close to it.
Overall, I would say for as nice as the villa itself is, we were disappointed with the condition of the resort.Response from VIvian - 08/07/2011

RESPONSE TO A VERY HARSH KAWAMA REVIEW
Thank you for the compliments paid to our villa and my renters' services. I really appreciate it it.
Now, regarding Kawama, I will start by stating that it is called Kawama Yatch Club. It is not a resort, it is a private community with rental units. A resort has entertainment, possibly restaurants, housekeeping services, planned activities, etc. but Kawama, in honor to the Florida Keys, is a very laid back enjoyable and relaxing key environment community.
As for the garbage comment, I will say that behind the boat yard, there is another fenced yard strictly for garbage with at least 8 to 10 commercial bins for garbage and classified recycling. I hope you saw it.
As far as your beach comment. The Florida Keys are known for boating, fishing, diving, lobstering . Miami Beach is less than an hour from the keys and there you can find more of what seems to be your liking. We are locals and we also wear rubber soles when we boat out at least 3 miles to our private little "Rodriguez Key" .
The gazebo by law needs to be open. The marina as I explained to you and everyone that wants to rent is going under rennovation but it does not affect any of the outside activities at Kawama. The noise you are referring to which by the way it is on an off, all ceases before 5 PM when there is plenty of daylight to be out in the patio or go to the point for a beutiful sunset...that's what Kawama is about....
As far as snorkling in the lagoon, it is not suited for snorkling only like you said (mostly) kids to dive and swim around the platform.
This is your opinion and everyone is entitled to one. As for us the residents of Kawama and all others that have left a review, even during the marina reconstruction...we considered a little piece of heaven on earth and are blessed to have this place to relax, enjoy good food, good wine and good times with plenty of water activities. Sorry it dissapointed you but I'm glad that at least you thought my villa was up to your standards... -

Very beautiful Home. Great place for a family to stay. We took our kids and grandkids- which all enjoyed the trip very much. The use of the golf cart was great. The guys all enjoyed fishing from the pier. My daughter and grand-daughter enjoyed the swimming area. We did not want to leave. Would certainly go back to this home.

I stayed at this Villa a couple of years ago and absolutely fell in love! The location is perfect in every sense of the word. You get to experience the laid back environment of the Florida Keys, but are also able to enjoy Miami since it is only an hour away. The amenities provided make the stay that much better; the villa is fully equipped to meet any traveler's needs. Great restaurants nearby and the people within the community are really friendly, warm, and welcoming. Great Location, Total Relaxation, and Loads of Fun! Wanna get away? Great place to head to when cabin fever gets the best of you.

We are a family with 3 kids (11,3,3). We stayed her for 11 days when we were traveling to Florida (we are from the Netherlands). We have stayed in Miami (beach), Key West, Naples, fort Myers and Kissimmee, but we enjoyed Key Largo best, especially the house with everything we needed, even for our kids. The people of the Kawama Yacht club are very friendly. It really was an unforgettable time. I hope we will have the chance to visit again sometime. Thank you!
