This cozy two-bedroom, one-bath condo lies hidden behind wrought iron gates and down a winding pathway. The Shipyard, part of the Truman Annex neighborhood named for President Harry Truman, is Old Town's premiere gated waterfront community. The manicured landscaping, verdant palms, and white picket fences give the Annex a lovely park-like atmosphere. Don't be surprised if you see exotic birds like the snowy egret taking a stroll right in the Shipyard gardens. All this tranquility makes it hard to imagine that Duval Street, Key West's central artery of entertainment is a mere two blocks away.
The two-story white wooden structure at Shipy...ard has a condo below and above. Yours is above and features front and back balconies. Either is ideal for enjoying what locals call sweet weather, a cup of coffee, or that newspaper or novel you brought along. If you're thinking of a swim, a heated pool with spacious patio is just steps away. For your convenience and comfort, the "Shipyard Residents Only" pool area provides chaise lounges, high-speed internet, bathrooms, and shower. If you prefer the real beach, the sun and sea breezes at Fort Zachary Taylor are right in the neighborhood. At the beach, have a sandwich and beer at the snack bar or rent an umbrella and chairs to watch the world of swimmers, divers, sailors, kayakers, and jet skiers pass by.
But wait, you aren't even unpacked yet. Enter your vacation home from the front porch, unlock the door to your left, and head up the carpeted stair case. At the top you'll find a welcoming, fluid open floor plan that combines the kitchen, dining area, and living room. A door at the back of the kitchen opens to the front balcony and the living room door leads to the back balcony. The galley kitchen has everything you need to cook a meal at the stove or barbecue steak or local fish using the easy electric grill on the front balcony. There's plenty of cupboard space above and every appliance conveniently tucked in below.
Next to the kitchen, the dining area provides a round, glass-topped table, colorful table linens, and four chairs. Sitting here you can enjoy the view out the French doors to the back balcony with blue sky and palm trees beyond. Or take your meal outside using the balcony's dining table and chairs. The living area features a bamboo couch, coffee table, and arm chair, all the same warm honey color as the Travertine tile floors. Colorful fish add tropical decoration to the walls. A "Casablanca" fan whirs above, circulating air throughout. In fact white ceiling fans cool every room whether you're using the central air conditioning or not. A corner-situated TV provides convenient viewing from the couch or chair. Need more seating? Just bring in the dining area chairs.
Just off the living/dining area are the master bedroom, which features a queen bed, chest of drawers, wall-mounted TV, and plenty of natural light from a large window; a full bath; and a second bedroom with twin beds. Each bedroom offers plenty of closet and drawer space for your flip-flops, shorts, swimwear, sunglasses, camera, hat, you name it.
Once you've settled in, the free-spirited fun of America's only Caribbean island awaits you at the Historic Seaport, on Duval, at the Southernmost Point, or at the beaches along the Atlantic. Check out the tours, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. While your condo comes with reserved parking, you don't really need a car. From your central location, everything is easily accessible by foot, bike, pedicab, or taxi. Strolling Duval, you might find yourself posing for a photo-op with a pirate, a six-foot-tall drag queen, a Hemingway look-alike, or maybe even Jimmy Buffet in person.
When you've had enough for one day and head back to your condo to relax and plan for the next day, make one last stop at the Green Parrot for a little live music, a libation, and free popcorn among writers, artists, locals, and visitors. At the corner of Southard and Whitehead (the first and last bar on Highway 1), it's right on your way back to the Shipyard.

I was recommended to Historic Hideaways Shipyard unit by a friend who has stayed there many times. No wonder! The location, for my wife and I at least, is perfect, close to Duval, Mallory Sq and Fort Zac. Shops, sunset, bars and beach, all strollable. We have stayed in Key West many times but haven't enjoyed anywhere more. The entire Truman annex has a feel of security, dedicated car parking spot - essential in Key West if a car is part of your trip but to be honest, we didn't even see the vehicle for three of our seven days. We'll be back.

Our unit was well equipped, clean, and comfortable. It was very close to Duval Street, so there was always something to do. The pool was under renovation and was closed for our entire stay, but that was the only disappointment. Although truthfully we were so busy exploring the island we didn't really miss it. We would stay here again. The price was very reasonable too!

Nothing can beat where the Shipyard is located. Everything is within walking distance and many great places to shop, eat and entertain. The neighborhood is quiet and well maintained. The condo is clean and well equipped with everything you need for a long stay in the Keys.

The location of this unit was it's most appealing feature. Walking distance to the downtown area and close to beach at Fort Zach. The unit was clean and the real estate company was very good to deal with. However it is very small for four people. With only one bathroom, small bedrooms and very limited living space it is best suited for a couple with two small children max. The condo complex is very tightly laid out resilting in no outdoor privacy. We found the pool to be small and crowded. Having been to Key West several times we know that there are nicer accommodations available in this price range. We would only return to The Shipyard if it is the only thing available.
It was a nice vacation and we really enjoyed Key West.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Shipyard and our entire first experience of Key West. We would definitely go back. The two bedroom condo was nice and just what we wanted for our family. Once the weather was warmer, we enjoyed the pool on the property and the Shipyard was located within walking distance of everything we needed. The check-in process didn't lend itself to people flying in and not renting a car, since the check-in was away from the Shipyard. However, everything else was great.
Well equipped, convenient, clean, secure and comfortable condo

Historic hideaways was pleasant and easy to deal with. There were no surprises. The condo exceeded our expectations -- very well stocked with amenities, kitchen tools, comfortable beds, towels. It was very clean. It is well insulated -- you can't hear neighbors or outside noise through the walls. The beach chairs and cooler for the beach were a nice surprise. The location was great -- very close to the state park, Duvall St, Mallory Square, convenient to town beaches (bike ride). Having a dedicated parking space is a luxury in Key West. The view from the condo is not great but it is private. The only downside was the key did not work for the pool gate and neither HH nor the condo management would make that right -- lucky there were people at the pool to let us in when we wanted to use the pool.

Shipyard Condo 262 was perfect for us in every way being quiet, private and tranquil, with two lovely bedrooms, one outdoor deck and one covered porch, spacious kitchen, and tasteful furnishings, which were light and airy, holding true to a tropical atmosphere. Our condo had all of the amenities and we could see it was perfectly maintained. We loved being within walking distance to everything from Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park to Mallory Square, ate at fabulous restaurants and visited lots of interesting shops and galleries, and enjoyed the privacy of the Truman annex to return to. We particularly loved the heated pool and lush landscaping on the grounds. It is truly the perfect place to have fun and relax in Iey West, without any hassles. We recommend it highly.

The accomodations where comfortable and the apartment completely stocked with the things we needed for the week. Everything was clean and in good repair. We felt safe. We were centrally located so we could walk just about everywhere. The landlord was reasonable to work with. It was a bit pricely for one week. We would consider staying there again.

Great location for walking to watch the races and Duval Street. Quaint, clean, and spacious. Small bathroom and kitchen that need an update, but otherwise a great place! I stayed in a gated complex so the added security was a plus and I felt safe at all times. I would certainly stay again without hesitation!

Historic Hideaways has GREAT properties. This was our 3rd summer
staying in an HH property. The properties have all been nicely
decorated, fully equipped kitchens (including a required blender),
Washers & Dryers, and free parking!! The staff at HH has been easy to
work with and responsive to our questions and concerns.
