About Kaunakakai

With rows of historical homes, the longest pier in the state, and friendly locals, the charming town of Kaunakakai has everything you need for a relaxing Hawaiian getaway. Head down the main street in the town's business district, Ala Malama Avenue, for an amazing variety of shops and boutiques.

While you're in town, be sure to also make time for some of these must-see sites:

  • Ala Malama Avenue: Be sure to stop at Kanemitsu's Bakery for their world-famous bread that the locals go crazy over.
  • Church Row: Visit the site of seven small, missionary-style churches that have been serving the community since the 19th century.
  • Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove: Take a free guided tour of the area before resting underneath one of the vast palm trees in this coconut grove.
  • Go to the Beach: Of course, no visit to Kaunakakai would be complete without soaking up the rays on one of the many white sand beaches in town.

In addition to all the sights that Kaunakakai has to offer, there are also a number of major events and festivals held throughout the year both in and around town. Watch traditional hula performances from local dancers during the Hula Piko Hula Festival in May, celebrate Hawaii's proud heritage during the Aloha Festivals in October, or watch movies from some of the top filmmakers on the island during the Hawaii International Film Festival in November.

Whether you're looking for a condo with beach views from your bedroom window, or a villa located near all the restaurants and shopping in town, there's a vacation rental available in Kaunakakai that's right for you.

Even though there's plenty to do just in Kaunakakai, the island of Molokai is small enough that you can reach anywhere on the island within two hours by car. If you have some extra time to explore, visit the green scenery of Halawa Bay Beach Park or the rural beach town of Mauna Loa.
