Description from the manager
Hawaiian for "Village By The Sea," Kauhale Makai is an oceanfront property located in Kihei. This is one of a few buildings in the area with a new central air conditioning system - not window units. This condo stays as cool as you like it. Kihei is perfect for families, romantic couples, or anyone wanting relaxation as well as quick and easy access to world class dining and entertainment. A short walk on the beach from our condo (just steps across the lawn area) will take you to The Pacific Whale Foundation viewing outpost (fabulous for viewing whales in season!) as well as Azeka Place which features many shops and restaurants. Just a hop-and...Read more

This was our first time to Hawaii and we would highly recommend going to Maui and especially staying here at this condo. The view was pretty darn good especially from lower floor. Condo had everything we needed even some extra snorkel gear for my Hot wife and myself. Make sure you visit Burgers in Paradise in Lahaina. Tim Schooler the manager is all about customer service. Black Rock is awesome for snorkeling, get there early pay the parking and enjoy. Mahlaina over at Boss Frogs on Kihei Rd in Kihei is very knowledgeable and honest. The feast at LeLe in Lahaina is the best. We can't say enough how much we enjoyed our stay and the best part was not having to worry about the condo was very relaxing. We stopped at Costco on way in from airport picked up some good and enjoyed breakfast every morning out on the lanai with a gorgeous view of the ocean and hills of Maui. We are looking at buying a condo in this complex. LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!!!!!

Overall a very nice place to stay. Well kept, clean apartment. The front door could use some updating as far as the lockbox, but it works. A minor problem with the dishwasher was handled quickly by the management folks. I would stay there again.

We were surprised to find that we had to provide our own toilet paper after we used the initial 2 rolls. Our internet access seemed to be intermittent. Otherwise everything was great. Plenty of clean kitchen ware, bedding and towels. Our view was mainly parking lot but it wasn't noisy and the ocean was in the background.

Everything we needed was in our condo. Fresh linens & towels, a fully stocked kitchen equipped with cups for the beach. Nothing was left out! The conveniences of having a washer & dryer just down the hall as well as the pool & hot tub were great. a short walk to the beach was a plus. I would definitely recommend this special spot in Maui.

Overall our experience was good. We were surprised (disappointed) more basics like toilet paper and soap were not provided for the week. (One partial roll) My husband was concerned that the sliding doors were not more secure and bulbs were burned out in the bathroom.

MY only complaint was the cleanliness. I also had to wait an hr. for the cleaner to finish. She parked in my spot. It was not clean enough for my standards, mostly superficial, although linens were o.k. The cleaner was pregnant and I guess working slow and minimal. The pots were inadequate. The rugs in the bathroom need to be replaced. Aside from the cleanliness, the apartment was nice, amenities were great, and well situated.

We really enjoyed our stay in this condo. Nice layout and comfortable beds. The only thing it lacked was beach towels and shade umbrella which we bought at Longs just down the road. Nice place for a good price.

Left on 10/27/2012 for a stay in October 2012
The rental was quick and easy to locate from the airport. The location was great and the ocean views were wonderful!! The rental was clean, well stocked with supplies, close to grocery stores and restaurants, and had amble space for both of us, but would also be adequate for 4 people. We felt the location was within easy access to many of the places to see on the island. Of course, who could not be delighted with the weather!!!!

Good location, good price. Dated all round, could use a facelift. I never know exactly what to say about condos because the experience can vary so widely from unit to unit. The unit I was in (323) was spacious (1BR/1Ba) and it had everything you needed for a stay - they did a good job with everything from kitchen utensils to towels. It was clean, although there were lapses, like a dirty laundry basket (ick), and a few other things that aren't on the standard cleaning list - I touched the top of the little box they had over the peephole on the door, and my hand came away with greasy dust. Everything worked but I was worried about whether the drains would back up the whole time (they didn't, but were extremely slow).
The folks in the front office were very nice and very helpful and the concierge was good.
This unit is quite close to Kihei Road, and traffic noise started up early (6 am or so) although it wound down by 10 PM. -

Some bugs inside the condo, not the end of the world considering the rate here. Don't forget anything in the condo because we did and it was a nightmare trying to get stuff back, and when we finally did, it was damaged by housekeepers.

Very nice property. Loved the swimming pool. It was great for the kids. Clean, very well kept, convenient to get to activities, beach, restaurants, etc. Can watch a beautiful sunset from the lawn in front of the property. Also, even being on the first floor, we had partial view of the ocean from our back door. Also, was very easy to deal with the management company when we rented this unit. They were very accomodating and helpful.

Lewistown, MTNot as advertised- beach-unkept grass-north facing
Left on 02/03/2011 for a stay in February 2011
At first glance we wanted to run the other way. This condo ad is very misleading!! After finding a nice beach to go to we settled in a little but never really unpacked. The Kauhale Makai sits about one block from the ocean but you don't have to cross the street to get to the ocean,so I suppose that is where the term oceanfront/beachfront comes from. What you have to walk across to get to the beach is long unkept grass. (All the other condos in area had theirs mowed nicely.)Then when you arrived at the beach it was about 6 feet wide sand strewn with rocks and no way could one sit on the beach there. The water was very brown and murky, something I would not want to swim in! We were told the condos had lounge chairs there(beach) which isn't true-there wouldn't be room for them on the sand anyway!!! Unit #104 faces north, so there was never any sun to sit in on our lanai...something you really look forward to when you come from Montana!!! Also, it didn't face the beach at all, and our view was the parking lot and mountain. :0( I would not recommend a ground floor unit to anyone as everyone walking by or parking can see right in. NO PRIVACY at all so we left our shades drawn most of the time. :0( I feel we were very mislead in this unit and will not return, however, we did find nice sand and ocean farther south in Wailea and Makenna, which is where we will go if we return to Maui. There was no screen on one sliding glass door which was replaced right away, and we purchased chairs for the beach, which we were told we will be refunded for, so the company did work with us some. The unit was not spotless by any means, many smudges on woodwork, etc, and rusty places on appliances. All in all this place was not the best. Thank heavens good swimming and food were within 15 to 30 min drive!!!

Ottawa, ON, CanadaKihei area of Maui is best.
Left on 01/02/2011 for a stay in December 2010
Although we did experience a mud slide from the mountainside, Kihei, is a great location to spend your winter vacation. It is a drier climate than the other side of Maui and is centrally located so you can access any part of the island within a very short period of time. There are bike paths along side most of the roadways in this area and it is relatively flat. The whales are seen from the beach and you can park just about anywhere. Beach access is available to anyone and not restricted to the large resort customers. Although our condo at Kauhale Makai was on the beach, there are other beaches that are more attractive so it is a good plan to visit them during your stay. The price to stay here was quite affordable when you consider the prices you may pay at a larger resort which you may never leave during your vacation. We enjoy exploring the entire island so we did not expect to have all the frills an all inclusive might have. We got up every morning, had our own coffee made in our kitchen , had a small breakfast outside on the deck looking out to the mountains, accessed the weather and made plans for the day. Our car was parked 15 ft away from our door making unloading easy. The room was quiet, and clean but did have a moldy, tropical smell. Something for easterners to get used to. The unit also advertised it slept 4 but I'm thankful we did not bring our friends or anyone else. two is very comfortable, They have a pullout couch but the bathroom is in the main bedroom which would make midnight visits a bit awkward. I would reccomend this type of unit to an adventureous couple that needed a clean, affordable, accomadations where they could cook the occasional meal on the communal BBQ, or in the fully stocked kitchen, and venture out to all the Maui attractions without planning a major excursion because of the location. Have fun! We sure did!!

A great unit, unfortunately it is on the dark side of the building and doesn't get the sun until 3:30. This may be good in the heat of the summer. Location of building requires a car to get anywhere except the Pacific Whale Foundation Center. Very friendly and helpful visits with others at poolside are good to give you inside info on Maui if you are new.

This complex was friendly, clean and right on a great walking beach. My unit(104) was right on the parking lot however I heard very little road noise as their quiet time is 10:00pm to 8:am. I would definitely recommend this complex to anyone.
