Orlando, FloridaA gem in paradise at a reasonable price!
Left on 05/19/2013 for a stay in May 2013
We have visited Kauai a number of times over the years and have stayed in hotels, time shares, bed and breakfasts and on cruise ships. All have been enjoyable, but our stay at Hale 'O Kuawa apartment from May 11th to 15th, 2013 was - I believe - the most relaxing. What a find!
I could simply say “dittos” to all the favorable reviews before us but let me see if I can add a few details that we appreciated.
Kitchen: In the kitchen we found coffee and filters -- both decaf and regular. Also, salt pepper, olive oil in a Mister, ketchup, mustard, mayo, sweet relish, a number of spices, barbeque rubs, sugar, zip-lock bags, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, paper towels, a large toaster oven, two burner electric stove, microwave, and wooden matches to light the Citronella candle on the Lanai. There was even a steamer basket that we used every night for fresh broccoli. You get the picture … don’t go shopping until you see what’s there.
Bathroom: Bandaids, body lotion, three-types of mosquito repellant. Yes they show up around barbeque time out on the Lanai. Etc.
Books – a whole bookcase of them. My favorites were those dealing with the identification of Hawaiian reef fish, touring Kauai, and cooking and grilling. Three of the books I have already ordered from amazon to add to my own collection.
Garden –Walking around Karen and Conrad’s yard is like touring a small botanical garden -- Ginger, orchids, water lilies, Bird-of–Paradise, fountains, planters, etc., etc. I will post pictures of some of the flowers that were in bloom in their yard during our recent stay.
Of course Karen’s simple but exquisite arrangements of anthuriums, birds of paradise, and gardenias should not go without mention.,
Is there anything missing?
Well, access to the unit is not wheel chair or walker friendly and there is no dishwasher or air-conditioning. None of these mattered to us but they might be a concern for others. -

but, couldn't. The only things that held back a 5 star rating were the 1)lack of air conditioning and 2) the long walk to the apt. entrance which was not paved and you had to carry your luggage over the gravel walkway. Conrad did help with the luggage at arrival, but this was not an easy uphill trip when we departed. It was april when we visited and no a/C was disappointing after a long day of activities and a cool room would have been nice. Aside from the above comments everything was great, we were impressed at how well the kitchen was stocked, the bedding was comfortable, good shower, nice views and Conrad was very helpful suggesting places to see & eat

Here is my dilema for this review: I would keep my impressions personal because a lot of people will rent this place and I won't be able to book it in the future. On the other hand, I really want this place to stay in the rental business because I love it and I do want to come back in the future.
Ok, not much detailed information to you, the reader, so far. Well, go and check it out. Getting the most basic information out of the way: Hale O Kuawa is an apartment on the bottom level of a house owned by the hosts, Karen and Conrad.
This an amazing place to stay. To begin, the view is incredible: it looks out onto this incredibly lush valley filled with tropical vegetation (and no people -- it feels extremely private and almost remote). Second, the apartment itself is in immaculate condition -- I would not describe it as fancy, but it is exceptionally clean, comfortable, nice, and well-maintained. The kitchen is small but stocked with all basic needs (spices, condiments, etc.). Third, the location is ideal. Kiluaea is a small "local" town with (as far as I know) no resorts. It's an easy walk to the town center, which features a number of really good, less touristy, casual spots to eat and drink. Kilauea is a perfect launching pad for exploring the northern part of the island (easily the nicer part, in my opinion) and is a short drive from all points of interest there (including Hanalei, Ke'e Beach, Anini Beach, etc.). Fourth, and finally, the value is unsurpassed.
Additionally, as other reviewers have made clear, the hosts, Karen and Conrad, could not be more friendly and welcoming. They have compiled lists of really good recommendations all over the island. We especially enjoyed eating at the Kilauea Fish Market, a casual Byob spot with outdoor tables and awesome food within walking distance of Hale O Kuawa.
My only (very minor) criticism was that the bed was on the very firm side, although I realize some people prefer that.
To summarize, you can't go wrong staying here. -

Forget a hotel or resort. This apartment with the unobstructed view of jungle and river valley is the place that will leave you rested and refreshed. There is plenty to do with only a short drive. The owners have provided items that are a God send such as coolers, coffee, shopping bags for the market, beach towels, outdoor shower, washing facilities, etc. etc. We have stayed at many a rented apartment or condo but this one was the most "outfitted". Highly recommend a stay at Hale'O Kuawa.

We just returned from our 6th stay at Hale 'O Kuawa, that alone should tell you how wonderful the apt is, but it's more, Karen & Conrad are such perfect hosts - they will be around as much or as little as you want always with tons of info and suggestions for things to do or see or places to eat! We look forward to seeing them every year. In fact, we already have the apt booked for two weeks next September (2013). Believe me, the apt is even better than the photos! Clean, well furnished, beach & hiking gear provided, your own brand new grill on your own lanai and the view is gorgeous out over the river valley. Kalihiwai is my favorite beach and is literally a 5 minute drive. Kilauea has a few restaurants and shops and a great farmers market on Thursdays. Princeville is less 5 miles away with a major grocery store (bakery & deli). We love this place!

Karen and Conrad have the vacation rental thing dialed in. The unit is in the daylight basement area of their home. The space looks over a river canyon behind the house and is surrounded by a wonderful garden. The living unit is wonderfully clean and well organized for visitors.
Karen maintains a great library with books of local interest, history and activities. She has assembled a notebook (her select favorites) that you will find incredibly valuable in organizing your activities. Every suggestion in the notebook was spot on.
The location in Kilauea is wonderful, it is delightfully off the beaten path and affords a quite, private accommodation after a busy day. The parking arrangement is easy and secure with well lit walking paths and an outdoor shower if you are so inclined.
Karen and Conrad are pleasant hosts who respond quickly to requests. If asked, they can give you the locals perspective on Kauai and help you avoid wasting time in tourist traps.
Highlights of the trip for us were Karen and Conrad, Hanalei, Tunnels for snorkeling and the farmers markets. The rental unit is supplied with beach equipment (towels and blanket), ice chests and a grill. All you need is to show up and settle into island time.
Beware, Kauai is habit forming! We are already planning our next trip. -

My wife and I stayed at Hale 'O Kuawa for our first ever vacation to Hawaii. This place was absolutely stunning. It is tucked back in a beautiful spot that give you privacy but quick access to the whole island.
If I had to think of a negative, it is that there is no aC. I am from Minnesota and the temps at night definitely weren't hot, but it was just a tad high for my taste. However, waking up to the chickens (we loved them) and the fresh island breeze more than made up for it.
If you have any second guesses or doubts, book this place. It is paradise. -

We've been to Kaua'i five times and every time we stay at Hale O'Kauwa. It is an amazing place for an incredible price per night. Karen and Conrad are fantastic hosts and we wouldn't consider going elsewhere! I have written a lengthy review from the last stay in april 2010 so won't repeat it here.
One nice favor was that Karen helped me to find a photographer for our 25th anniversary vow renewals. We both looked for weeks before our trip, and she happened upon G&H; Kaua'i Photography right after we got there. It turned out to be the perfect set up and I thank Karen for her resourcefulness.
One other observation we noticed this time was how thankful we were that we could get away from the crowds and traffic and retire to our private getaway on the far side of the neighborhood where there wasn't a sight of anything other than a river valley!
You will be completely enchanted and ready to move to Kaua'i!!! Once reality sets in when you get back home, your desire to move will morph into fantastic memories that you'll continue to treasure for years to come. -

Very good location two minutes off the main road but in a fairly secluded spot. -

The Hale 'O Kuawa is the vacation rental! This beautiful paradise exceeded our expectations. It is hard to describe this perfect home away from home - words can only say so much...
The view from the lanai is amazing, the barbecue grill a real plus and the outdoor shower a neat feature. The very clean, comfortable apartment has all the amenities you wish for and is furnished with aloha spirit. We loved the variety of Hawaiian music, guides and books. Conrad had many helpful tips and gave us mangos from their own garden while Karen had a little anniversary surprise waiting for us.
Karen and Conrad thought of everything one can wish for - and more.
We definitely would love to come back to Kauai and will never consider staying anywhere else but at the Hale 'O Kuawa!

Our stay at Hale 'O Kuawa was fabulous due to its privacy, solitude, convenience and our hosts' friendly, accomodating spirit. A very secluded apartment, with private access, overlooks a pristine valley of lush vegetation, active with birdsong. The barbecue on the lanai, exquisite outdoor shower (indoor shower available also), and gorgeous views from both the dining area and bedroom (with king bed), highlight every convenience you can think of from full cooking capabilities to wifi, cable tv, ample reading library, and music selection. If it wasn't for the draw of Kauai's beaches, mountains and myriad adventures, one could be forgiven for lingering away the hours at 'home' in this well-appointed apartment. Conrad and Karen seem to have thought of everything.

Myself, daughter and 9 year old granddaughter felt very happy and comfortable as soon as we entered their beautiful space. The rental is very private and quiet. There was nothing we wanted for and if we did, it was provided. They were very accommodating with plenty of local information at hand which helped make us feel more at ease being in new surroundings. The apartment is beautiful, very clean confortable and the views from our lanai amazing.
We did not have the chance to meat with Karen who was out of the town but Conrad took really good care of us and gave us so many good tips to explore the beautiful Island.
We received very tasty babanas and avocados from their own garden, we enjoyed their outside shower every day, used their beach gear ...
Again thanks for sharing your home with us

Karen and Conrad made our first visit to Kaua'i a truly memorable one. Their apartment was the perfect 'nest' for us, providing a beautiful and serene hideaway to 'fly off' from on each day's adventures for our 8 day stay. Located in the relatively non-touristy, lovely small town of Kilauea on the northeast shore of Kaua'i, it was just the right distance from everything - not even too far for a day trip to Waimea Canyon, so we felt no need to find a second place to stay to enjoy the south side of the island. The apartment had every amenity we could have asked for, and Conrad was unendingly gracious and helpful, and even brought us a big box of avocados and other fruit. Karen was out of town for most of our stay, but happily, we were able to meet her the night before we left, so we could thank her too. My husband and I can't recommend Hale O' Kuawa highly enough, and we would jump at the chance to stay there again.

We had the most excellent experience at Hale O' Kuawa. Conrad and Karen are the most gracious hosts. They have a very exclusive apartment in their lower level of their home. The apartment has it's own entry with a very warm and comfortable charm. The front window overlooks beautiful landscaping and the way the house is set up, it is very secluded from other houses. You see nothing but beautiful vegetation. All the comforts of home and even some extras like having laundry facilities right in the apartment. The bedroom is separate from the living room and kitchen, which makes it nice. This apartment was so clean and uncluttered. Conrad and Karen were able to give us some excellent suggestions for adventure, but yet did not invade our space at all. This apartment is in Kilauea and we found it very easy to get where ever we wanted to go. The island isn't that big, that we were able to day trip anywhere. The Schmidts offer anything you might need to take to the beach and references on almost any type of activity. Our first trip to Kauai'i was so wonderful and I believe it was because Conrad and Karen made it so comfortable for us. Thanks to them both.
You won't be disappointed staying here.

This is a lovely place in a gorgeous location at a very reasonable price! This comfortable one-bedroom apartment is the bottom floor of a beautiful home set at the end of a cul de sac on a quiet street. It faces the back of the property, overlooking the gorgeous valley and river below it. All you will hear are the sounds of the fountain that is just outside your room, and of the river below, with the wind in the trees and the occasional bird song.
The bedroom has a large comfy king-size bed, and a roomy closet and chest of drawers providing room for all your things. Just through the sliding glass door is the lanai (patio) with several comfy chairs, a grill, and a fabulous view of the lush vegetation and the valley. There is also a decent-sized living area, with a dining table off to the side, right in front of big windows with views of the valley. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a big refrigerator with an efficient freezer that will provide you with all the ice you will probably need for daily outings. And they even supply ice chests and beach chairs and a day pack and thermoses to take along to your favorite sand spot, along with big soft beach towels. There is also a washer and dryer which makes packing light a possibility. There is not only a full bathroom inside, but a wonderful outdoor shower overlooking the valley, a peaceful place for a hot shower under the stars at the end of a beach day.
There are photos of Hale O'Kuawa on their website, but they don't do it justice. The owners, Karen and Conrad, are lovely warm generous hosts who are wonderfully helpful and quick to meet any request, while still allowing you total privacy. It would be hard to rave about them enough! And last but not least, the location is perfect, just at the beginning of the gorgeous North Shore of Kaua'i, and a short drive from some of the most beautiful beaches on earth. This is a truly lovely place to serve as your island home on Kaua'i.

This was a wonderful apartment in a quiet cul de sac location. The views from the living room picture window were stunning with no other houses visible. All the wonderful things that have been mentioned by other reviewers are true. In an attempt not to repeat what has already been said, I could mention that the internet connection may or may not work with your laptop. We did not get a signal until we put the laptop in the kitchen a couple of feet from the WiFi signal extender (?).
Hale 'O Kuawa is within walking distance from the Farmers' Market (Thursdays at 4 PM) and from Kilauea Fish Market, where the ahi wraps and the Korean BBQ chicken are delicious. Kilauea is in a great location for exploring the north shore and visiting the Na Pali coast. The Secret Beach and its surroundings is worth a visit, as is the Queen's Bath. Returning to Hale 'O Kuawa after a day in this island paradise will make your day even more perfect. Enjoy! -

My girlfriend and I stayed here at the end of March 2010 as a stop over before hiking the Kalalau Trail. The room was fantastic. It had everything I could have hoped for and more. Tons of books to read, videos to watch, kitchen to cook in, clean beds, clean bathroom, great view.
Even better than the room were the hosts. Karen and Conrad are exceedingly nice. Since my girlfriend and I don't have duffel bags and didn't want to carry our luggage with us as we backpacked, we asked to keep our luggage at the room while we were hiking. The owners had zero problem with it and worked with us to make sure we could access our luggage again at the end of the trip. They were fantastic hosts and I'm very grateful to have rented from them.
Stay here if you're visiting the north side of the island. You won't be sorry. -

Left on 05/20/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We ABSOLUTELY LOVE staying at Hale O' Kuawa! There are so many great things to say, but here's the most important. I am a discerning traveler (okay, so my husband says "picky"!) and the bed and the noise level are the two things that will make or break a place of lodging for me. We just finished our 4th time staying here in 10 years. I wanted a place of peace and quiet where I knew the drill and knew the bed would be great. So I convinced my hubby to return to Kilauea. And, it was STILL fantastic. The apartment is wonderfully decorated with great spaces in the bedroom and living areas. The view is incredible - can't see anyone else from the bedroom or the dining room. We love the quiet neighborhood and love waking up each morning to the singing of the birds (and a rooster, here or there). Wonderful to have a washer & dryer right there and even an extra shower outside. Great collection of books to take to the beach and also there are beach chairs, hiking sticks, coolers, backpacks...everything you need to explore.
Karen and Conrad are always gracious and welcoming. They maintain their sweet and happy personalities through it all. True hospitality - just like we experienced in Japan!
The price is unbelievable for the quality you encounter - in fact, one could spend the same amount of money on food for two for the day if you had to eat out - but, there is a nice pullman kitchen and a barbeque grill on the lanai.
We love the location of Kilauea - it has such a nice town feel and not over-run by tourists. I know - we're tourists, too, but we like to pretend we're not part of the crowd. It's close to great and peaceful beaches with snorkeling and hiking within 1/2 to 10 miles.
Nice eateries right in the town of Kilauea. The Kilauea ice cream and video store serves the BEST ice cream on the planet, I'm sure of it - I had a least 6 cones during our 10 day stay. Check out the Chocolate Coconut Macadamia Nut in a waffle cone and tell Dan you read it on this site. The seared ahi wrap at The Fish Market was ono (delicious!) and the pizza at the bakery was very tasty, too. Also, the Island Soap and Candle Works near the bakery has the most fantastic Creamy Coconut lotion and pineapple candles (piña colada, anyone?). Be sure to purchase your fill while there, because the shipping is expensive and your minimum order has to be over $40 or so.
Be sure to check out the Hindu Monastery and see the granite temple with gold trimmings.
Aloha!

our experience at Hale O Kuawa was for so many years, staying in your

many points of interest! And you let us know when you found information
about anything interesting taking place on the island; a great help when we
were new to Kauai.
There were always new interesting and informative books about various
aspects of Hawaiian culture and history added to the library each year and a
wonderful selection of Hawaiian CD"s, as well as a large collection of video
cassettes. And a special delight was using the lovely outdoor shower, even
though there was a complete indoor bathroom. What a convenience it was
to have a washer and dryer! There was a convenient kitchen with full
refrigerator, microwave oven, large toaster convection oven and sturdy two
burner stove top plus appliances for every cooking convenience.
Once we found Hale O Kuawa, we looked no farther; it was the perfect place
to relax in the privacy of the lovely yard overlooking the Kilauea Canyon and
perhaps cook something on the grill on the lanai.
It is only because of serious family illness that we are not there this year.
Karen and Conrad, thank you for soooooo many lovely memories of our
time spent with you in beautiful Hale O Kuawa. We love you, Bill and Jane :) -

This was the second visit we had made to Hale O Kuawa in Kilauea. The setting is serene and overlooks the Kilauea Stream valley. Karen's gardens are beautiful. The bedroom is comfy with plenty of closet and bureau space. The living room has a good TV and radio CD player. The kitchen has everything you need to cook breakfast with a two burner stove and a full size refrigerator. The lanai has a grill and frequent visits from Pie, the cat. The bathroom is fully stocked with towels for home and for the beach and a washer dryer. Karen and Conrad have also left coolers, beach mats and beach chairs for you. The use of the outdoor shower makes the whole tropical effect more special. We are looking forward to our next visit.
