Warm and welcoming, beautifully designed cottage in quiet North

Left on 12/31/2012 for a stay in December 2012

We loved our Christmas week stay at Twin Hearts. The cottage itself is designed in Bali/Island style, architecturally beautiful, with wood floors and paneling. Many louvers on all sides and ceiling fans help keep the trade wind air circulating. A mostly full kitchen (no oven, but a microwave, toaster oven, and 3-burner cooktop plus outdoor bbq) allowed us to make our meals at the cottage, onsite washer/dryer was great for keeping our laundry clean, and pretty much everything else you might need for a great stay is provided - snorkeling equipment, beach towels and mats, a kayak for use on the nearby river, boogie boards, etc.

Location on the North Shore was new for me, having traveled to Kauai before and stayed in Kapa'a. It was great for nearby access to all the North Shore beaches, including nearby Rock Quarry beach, Secret Beach (wonderfully scenic!) and 'Anini beach park, which was great for swimming in this high-surf winter season. The nearby town of Kilauea is tiny and has a few nice shops and a good bakery/cafe. We really enjoyed being close to Hanalei and got to explore it more than I have done previously, while still being an easy drive south to Kapa'a, the Wailua River and we made it all the way around the island to Waimea Canyon.

The local cat was adorable (assuming you like cats) - he hung out on top of the hot tub when we weren't using it, making the cottage seem even more homey. There are geckos and some cockroaches around, as well as other normal island creatures but nothing unexpected or problematic.

There aren't really any views to speak of, as it's uphill from the beach, though in the distance you can see the ocean. It's just a short drive or even a good walk down to the river/ocean. The property itself is wonderfully landscaped so you do see lush green and orchids out the windows.

Overall this is a really wonderful vacation rental if you are looking for a quiet, lovely cottage in a good, easy to access North Shore location.

Beautiful, secluded location - perfect place to experience true

Left on 06/10/2012 for a stay in May 2012

We stayed at this beautiful cottage for 5 nights to start out our honeymoon in Hawaii. Bruce was very easy to work with and has a great suggestion book in the house upon arrival. The guest book in the house also has great tips for beaches and restaurants in the area. The cottage is very private and gives you the true Hawaii experience unlike may of the resort areas. We spent 7 nights on Maui after Kauai and Kauai was definitely our favorite. If you like secluded beaches, beautiful scenery, hiking, kayaking and are looking for a relaxing place to spend a vacation, the north shore of Kauai is hard to beat.
We stopped at Safeway on the way to Twin Hearts and bought enough groceries for breakfast each day and for a few lunches and dinners. We don't like going out to eat for every meal on vacation, so having a fully stocked kitchen and gas grill at the cottage worked out really well. We were able to save a ton of money and time by cooking about half of our meals. The property is located right off of the main road and very close to both Rock Quarry and Secrets Beaches. It's only about a 40 minute drive to the Kalalua Trail, which is as far north as you can drive. Every beach along the way is worth a visit. Our favorites were Secrets, Tunnels (great snorkeling), Ke'e and Rock Quarry. The Kilauea Bakery is about a 5 minute drive and has great iced coffee, smoothies, pastries and sandwiches. There are great shops in the same plaza and the Kilauea Fish Market is across the street. We had dinner there (Byob) and also bought some fresh Mahi Mahi to cook back at the cottage. We could have stayed there for a month!
All in all, this is a great place to stay and explore the most beautiful part of the island. If you don't like lizards, you are better off in a resort. They are all over the island and will join you in the Twin Hearts Cottage at night. Once you get used to them, it's like having insect eating neighbors, which is great! We would definitely recommend this rental and will hopefully be back in the near future. Thanks again to Bruce for making the renting process so smooth and for getting the security deposit back to us so quickly.

Response from Bruce Fehring - 06/16/2012

We are happy that Jeff and Lauren chose to come and spend their first precious days together as husband and wife at Twin Hearts, and that they enjoyed much of what Kauai's magnificent North Shore has to offer. The "lizards" Jeff mentioned are actually harmless geckos (like the Geico gecko!) and he is right...they are your friends, and they are everywhere in the islands. Some even manage to survive at the resorts, despite massive poisoning campaigns, which we prefer not to engage in. Thanks for the helpful review, and please return to see us on Kauai. Journey on!

      Romantic Getaway

Left on 12/30/2011 for a stay in December 2011

We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this romantic cottage. It is totally secluded, yet near the beach and fun activities. Beautiful, clean, really comfortable bed and furnishings. Enjoyed the hot tub, hammock, and visits from the owners' sweet dog and cat. There is no outdoor lighting (there is a porch light you can turn off) so the view of the stars and the Milky Way at night is absolutely stunning. We appreciated that, coming from a city where the stars are few and far between. My husband jogged to the beach and back every day. It is a short walk to a spectacular public garden. We recommend the guided tour, a hike on the Na'Pali coast from Ke'e beach, kayaking on the Wailua River, and so much more. Ask the owner, Bruce, for ideas and suggestions. A beautiful spot for a memorable vacation!

      Secluded Hawaiian Paradise

Left on 05/19/2011 for a stay in December 2010

We stayed here for several nights over Christmas 2010. The place was beautiful, and I think it was much nicer than the photos appear. We loved having a private hot tub and our own grill, and even grilled for our Christmas dinner. The island is small enough that nothing is too far away, and we enjoyed being near a number of farmer's markets and shops. The cottage itself is well equipped, with a nice kitchen, comfortable bed and clean bathroom. We lucked out with great weather, it rained very hard a couple of nights, but we were generally in the car on the way back to the cottage so it didn't mess up any plans. The island of Kauai is gorgeous, and this is a great home base for any visitors.

      Pure paradise

Left on 01/21/2011 for a stay in August 2010

My fiance and I had the great pleasure of staying at Twin Hearts during the last week of august/first week of September, 2010. Despite the weather widget's predictions, rain occurred only in the evenings, and the days were sunny and warm-perfect for exploring beaches.

The cottage itself was totally charming, impeccably furnished, and filled with everything a couple could possibly need. Each day began and ended in the hot tub on the covered porch. Sandwiched in between was one beautiful, uncrowded beach after another. At night, we melted into the very comfortable bed and so enjoyed listening to the soft, fine rain.

We thoroughly loved the town of Kilauea, and ate many meals at the local bakery and fish market. While we explored most of the North Shore beaches, Rock Quarry Beach, a 10-minute walk from Twin Hearts, may have been our favorite.

Our recommendation is that you stay as long as you can. Twin Hearts and the North Shore of Kauai are unbeatable!

Great location for some relaxing time on Hawaii

Left on 10/03/2010 for a stay in August 2010

This place was great, we absolutely loved it. It's about 5 minutes from the beach, but the cottage itself is set up so that you really feel you have the place (or even the island) to yourself. There may have been neighbours around but we did not see them, which only added to the feeling of this romantic, secluded getaway on this beautiful island.

We never met Bruce, but he was there with us all the way - providing detailed driving and shopping instructions, ensuring the key was there for when we got there, and leaving a really useful guide to the island in the cottage.

Alltogether, we had a fantastic few days - just wished we could have stayed longer..!

Our wonderful honeymoon at twin hearts

Left on 10/02/2010 for a stay in July 2010

We spent 10 days at twin hearts and it was an unforgettable trip. The house was amazing with great views and centered around everything. It was close to the airport and close to all the beaches. The chickens are great and was something that took a day to get use to but was absolutely an amazing trip.
