Salem, OH2nd year and still awesome!
Left on 07/31/2012 for a stay in July 2012
This is the second year our two families have rented this house. It's still just the perfect house for us. The price is great for being so close to the ocean and beach access. This year we rented a beach wagon to help get everything to the beach and I highly recommend that! You are close if you're adults and older kids, but when you are trying to get 4 little kids (under 7) to walk there or home, it can be exhausting having to carry all of the chairs/toys/umbrellas/etc too. We love how even though there's 10 of us, no one feels cramped at all. It's also nice being close to all the restaurants and shops etc. We did a dolphin tour down in Manteo and it was still only about a 20 minute drive. Our favorite thing to do (aside from going to the beach!!) is sit on the deck and watch the ocean or play games at the table.
I only have a few small negatives. 1. the door lock on the downstairs door needs replaced badly. Sometimes you could turn it and it would open even though it was locked. And other times you couldn't even get it locked or opened with the key. It did become an issue and we got a little worried about safety. My husband joked about stopping at Lowes and changing it for them. haha 2. The house was very clean again this year but the windows and sliding door were horrible this year. We assume it was because they got storms the week before we got there but we were surprised the cleaning person didn't clean them. You could only really see out of the one side of the door. Also, they might want to put a sign over the washer and dryer that says to shake out or rinse out sand before putting in a load of laundry b/c both years they were caked with sand on the day we got there. It's kinda hard to have no sand, but people should also be considerate and shake out as much as possible, esp when they are new machines.
All in all though, it was another perfect week in the Outer Banks!! We highly recommend this house and Kitty Hawk Rentals. -

for a fronts beach road property, the house was located within 3 houses of a beach access. the house was very nice, they could use televisions in every room, for the kids to watch and play games, other than that, our stay was
above average. -

I was looking for a house in close proximity to the beach, shopping, and activities for 2 teenagers and a place for me to relax. This house was everything I was looking for.

The house was fantastic and the location was terrific. I stayed there with my children, their better halves and my granddaughter. It was truly a vacation I will never forget.

Ellicott City, MDGreat value, great location! Needs new beds...
Left on 06/22/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We've stayed at this house three times over the last 17 years. It's been recently updated - great new kitchen, new bathroom fixtures in both upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, new dining room and new family room furniture (including a flat panel TV)have helped keep this home current.
If you like water pressure, you'll get it! The water is also not too soft, like some other properties, so you won't be rinsing yourself off for 20 minutes. There is a downstairs outside shower (needs the head replaced) that works to wash yourself off from the beach.
The walk from the beach is short - 40 feet to beach access and another 15 yards to the beach itself. The beach is sandy but the immediate beach under the waves is pebbly, so be prepared for that. You're close to the avalon pier (1/4 mile walk) and the beach is a nice walk in this area. You are near public access parking, so that can make the area a little more crowded than, say, a Kitty Hawk walk-across.
If you like playing games (as we do), the dining table is not ideal, as it's large and round with a spinner in the middle. It's so wide (great for large gatherings) that it's difficult to use. I understand the logic - it just didn't work for us. The 2nd level is old, but functional.
Our one complaint - the beds are worn out and have to be replaced. Especially the king bed on the second level; it's just too soft for us. The other guest beds are tired and should also be replaced. They might be fine for kids, but for adults, you might be uncomfortable. The house has so much else to offer - grill, brand new washer and dryer - that it's still a great value.
The crow's nest and decks are fantastic and provide great views (and shade from the hot sun) while you sit outside. Some of the best we've seen!
Overall, a very nice house. Replace the beds and it's a winner! -

We were a little nervous about the walk to get to the beach, but it was so easy! We were the third house from the beach access. When we got there, we were pleased to find that there was a great enclosed outdoor shower with hot water. The washer and dryer looked brand new and worked great - we took no dirty, sandy clothes home! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for cooking each night. We spent every evening out on the covered upper deck. Our next visit will most definetely be in this house!! We had such a great time!!!
