Kingscourt is a busy and prosperous market town situated in the south-east corner of County Cavan near the borders of Meath, Louth and Monaghan. The town lies between the N2 and N3 national primary routes north of the N52 easily accessible from Airport via M50 and M1 motorway. Nearby principal towns include Carrickmacross (8 miles), Navan (20 miles), Dundalk (21 miles) and Cavan (27.5 miles). Furthermore the towns of Ardee and Kells lie 12.5 miles and 14 miles distant respectively.

The town and surrounding area are well known and regarded for a number of reasons. Set just a short distance from the town is the beautiful Cabra Castle, a 4 star hotel with a lovely golf course set in its grounds is a highly popular wedding venue. Adjacent to Cabra Castle is the wonderful Dun a Rí Forest Park, a place of surprising contrasts. Situated in a tranquil glen, Dun a Rí is home to stoat, hare, mink, rabbit and otter, as well as red and grey squirrel along the banks of the River Cabra. One can take a walk through deep, leafy glades over old bridges and see marvellous views north to Slieve Gullion in County Armagh and the Mountains of Mourne. Some interesting features in the park include Cromwells bridge, a wishing well and an ice house. To the south-west of Kingscourt is Muff Rock, scene of an annual horse fair on August 12th the origins of which date to prehistoric times. Muff Fair is widely regarded as the Oldest Horse Fair in Ireland. Gartlans licensed premises on the main street with its thatched roof and original front is depicted in many of the John Hinde calendar, tableware and other collections.

The area is rich in entrepreneurial skill. A number of the towns home grown industries have become both national and international brand names including the Kingspan, Gypsum and Fuss Hangar. Kingscourt Brick and OReilly Concrete are also large employers in the area.

Nearby Lough-an-Leagh mountain (1,119ft) is an area of outstanding natural beauty. On a fine day it is possible to see 14 counties from the summit. A number of surrounding lakes, such as Ervey and Greaghlone are well stocked with many species of coarse fish. Kingscourts Catholic Church, sitting on a ridge high above the town, displays excellent stained glass windows by the renowned Irish artist Evie Hone, who also provided designs for Eton College Chapel.Read more

  Sheila made the sun shine as soon as we arrived (after our first heavy rain). Her personal and lovely way let us feel at home - and her suggestion for dinner was as good as her tip for the music session of the night (were she showed up personally later). Whoever loves dogs will love this house, too. Thank you for a wonderful (if short) stay - and for not giving me the pink room ;-)
