Smardale Hall is a most distinctive building, built between the 15th and 16th century, it is of Medieval appearance, with a tower on each corner, the site was originally a 14th century town house. Smardale is a hidden unasumming gem of a holiday cottage. Tucked away along a single track country lane, its imposing facade does not dissappoint when you go inside. You will find a wonderful large farm style kitchen, a beautiful hallway with high ceilings, turning staircase and a feeling of oppulance. A home from home lounge feels snuggly and warm, even in the summer and the bedrooms are just perfect.
What makes this home special is the cleanliness that some 5 star hotels would be proud of and many do not even match. Not a spec of dust, copweb or spider in sight - it was the cleanest holiday cottage you can imagine. Towels, toilet rolls 'on tap' to help ourselves to and all the little extras in the kitchen you need on a family break to hand.
We were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was and we could not fault it.
We loved it, our children found it exciting to stay in a 'medieval mini castle' as they described it and we would happily go back.
Perfectly located to see both the lakes and the peak district and minutes away from a lovely village with the most divine indian restuarant/takeaway!

We really enjoyed our stay. A very short walk to a couple of viaducts if that's what you want. Quick drive to Kirkby Stephen and less than an hour to Windermere. Very quiet, very rural and a big house with plenty of room. Good value for money. We will be going back there again.

Half term holiday

We stayed at smardale throughout February half term. Our party consisted of 2 couples, 2 infants and a four year old.
Property - fantastic large house. Great living space with a large wood burning stove. Large kitchen diner which was very well equipt. Dish washer and washer dryer added bonus. Three good sized bedrooms. One double bedroom ensuite. One further double bedroom and a large bedroom with twin beds and a bunk bed.
Locatation- suituated on a farm approx three miles from kirkby Stephen. Locatation stunning and rural ( no not expect mobile phone reception or any pubs or shops within walking distance) we took bikes, very good area to explore , good for walkers, off road running, cyclists,beautiful nature reserve outside your front door.
Owners of the property Steve and gill live near door .We were made to feel so welcome in a very relaxed manner. Nothing was too much trouble, they went above and beyond in making us feel welcome, comfortable and at home at
smardale. We even sampled some of gills baking which was amazing.
If you after a very relaxed holiday we would highly recommend smardale hall. We will definitely be returning. -

We felt very relaxed whilest there, and welcomed, if you want a five star impersonal treatment do not go if you want five star personal treatment highly recommended. Ladies do some very good baking! (even for our daughter with milk, soya allergy and wheat intollerance). Please do not expect your mobile/cell to ring as signal is very poor

We just spent 5 nights staying in this wonderful place. We received a very warm welcome from the owners and immediately fell in love with both the house and surroundings. We unfortunately had rough weather (the remains of the hurricane) but that took nothing away from our enjoyment. Our hosts were happy for us to explore the farm and even took us on a guided tour, the walks nearby were very enjoyable, everyone we met was friendly and full of information. We had our fathers with us, both well into their 80s and both want to return as soon as possible. The views we looked out on were beautiful. All the little extras for our comfort are beyond description. I can't wait to return!
