    Additional Location Information

Orkney's ancient monuments are must-see attraction particularly those in the UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Site in the West Mainland, such as Skara Brae, Maeshowe and the stone circles at Brodgar and Stenness. The Broch of Gurness in Evie is also well worth visiting, and the East Mainland can offer the intriguing underground structure of Minehowe in Tankerness, and the Grain Earth House in the improbable setting of Kirkwall's Hatston Industrial Estate. Much more information on this and all aspects of Orkney's heritage can be found on Sigurd Towrie's excellent Orkneyjar website.

The East Mainland is the gateway to the linked South Isles of Burray and South Ronaldsay, linked by the Churchill Barriers, causeways built during World War II to protect the naval anchorage of Scapa Flow. On Lambs Holm, between barrier no. 1 and barrier no. 2, you can find the Italian Chapel, another must-see, and heading south you can visit the Orkney Fossil and Vintage Centre in Burray, and the excellent Orkney Marine Life Aquarium in South Ronaldsay, excellent rainy day activities (but note our annual rainfall is below the Scottish average!). VisitOrkney will tell you about more places to visit as well.

Kirkwall itself has much to offer, with the St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney Museum, Earl's and Bishop's Palaces, and vibrant town centre shopping in a well preserved Norse street layout. The Orkney Library and Archive has a wealth of information to explore, and is also the home to the Orkney Family History Society, for those wishing to explore their roots.

In the west, Stromness is also well worth a visit, being home to the Pier Arts Centre and Stromness Museum, and also is a particularly attractive town with numerous intriguing lanes and alleys, and every house which could have one having a pier of its own.

Also we can't forget the beach. Orkney has beautiful beaches at all points of the compass, with Skaill facing the Atlantic, Newark in South Ronaldsay facing East, Aikerness in Evie facing North, Scapa (just down the road from Innisgarth) facing South, and many more- Waulkmill, Newark in Deerness, Dingieshowe, Inganess, Glimpsholm...

      Amazing Orkney!

Left on 05/08/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Innisgarth is a very warm and comfortable bungalow. The owners, Kenny and Sheila, live next door and if you have any requests they are happy to help. It is well situated just outside Kirkwall which is walkable on a fine day. A wide selection of books and tourist info about Orkney is provided for guests.

There is a utility room with a very efficient washer and dryer but as the place is so warm washing dries well on the clothes airer during the day. There are many thoughtful touches such as a generous supply of towels, notepaper, tissues and a welcome basket of Orkney produce.

There was a certain amount of nocturnal gurgling from the water tank in the double room but this was rememdied by turning off the water heater to the left of the kitchen door at bed time.

In all a great place to stay: excellent facilities very reasonable price. We hope to come back one day.

      Welcome to Orkney!

Left on 11/12/2012 for a stay in October 2012

First time on Orkney, work unfortunately, but the stay at Innisgarth more than made up for that.
It is an extremely, well equipped, attractive up-to-date property. In the country but minutes from Kirkwall by car which was absolutely perfect for my stay.
It is well equipped and the added extras make it a really nice place to stay. Kenny and Sheila are excellent hosts and were extremely helpful.
On the whole Orkney in October is rather shut, but the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall (which is free) was fascinating and I had nowhere near enough time to explore it properly.
Liked best - sitting in the cosy living room with a beautiful view of a snowy field
Liked least - unusual heating system which has a bit of a noisy motor at the back of the house
If I didn't have 4 kids and 2 dogs I would definitely come back here on holiday!

      What a fantastic place

Left on 09/06/2012 for a stay in August 2012

My wife and I and our two children (10&8) stayed at Innisgarth for a weeks holiday in august whilst visiting family in Orkney.

The house was exactly as advertised, very modern and spotless with all the mod cons you could ever need. The welcome pack was a nice touch after a long drive and ferry crossing and saved having to dash to the supermarket upon arrival!

The location is ideal with a 10 minute walk to Scapa Beach and it takes about 25 minutes to walk into the center of Kirkwall. The garage also makes an ideal windbreak for when the sun does come out and my wife and I sat at the garage entrance on the deck chairs a number of times enjoying the tranquil location.

To sum up Innisgarth is perfect for anyone looking for top notch accomodation whilst exploring the natural beauty and dramatic history of the Orkney Islands.

      We'll definitely be back again.

Thank you Kenny and Sheila for being such wonderful hosts.

      Great Cottage

Left on 08/29/2012 for a stay in August 2012

The cottage was modern, well stocked and immaculately clean. A beauatifully peaceful view over farmland and enough room for a family of 4 to stretch out after a hard day of sight seeing. You can easily cook in every night with the good quality pans abd utensils. You will probabaly need a car or bicycle to see the island properly but the nearest beach is only a 10 min walk and the town centre 10 min drive. We will return.

The cottage was fantastic, you really want for nothing as every thing has been thought about. The conservatory was great, with an outlook into the country side, we had breakfast in it every morning. The traffic outside the house was chaotic one day 1 car and a rabbit passed by.
Orkney itself is a beautiful place to visit, such a lot to see and do and the people are really friendly.
I would recommend visiting Orkney and staying at Innisgarth

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at Innisgarth and it was as good as ever. Ken and Sheila feel more like friends than accommodation proprietors. The cootage is beautiful and in amazing location. Cannot fault one aspect of our stay and this year we also had excellent weather - 2 showers of rain during our week and for most of the time sunshine never far away and warm. Visited islands of Westray, Hoy and Rousay - Westray and Hoy are stunning and Rousay is lovely too although the service in the cafe/bar at the harbour at Rousay was not great. Certainly wont be back there! Westray - wildlife amazing and Hoy - the walk to Old Man of Hoy is stunning and then back through the valley stunning.

Excellent accommodation and very welcoming owners. An amazing 'welcome' basket and free range eggs on demand! Spacious, modern and well maintained house. Fabulous, extremely well equipped kitchen with dining area. Attached garage offered loads of space for walking gear (and drying space when needed) luggage etc. Feeling of being away from it all - view over fields with lots of bird and hare activity - whilst being within 20 minutes easy walking distance of the centre of Kirkwall. A great base for all parts of mainland Orkney. Extremely easy access to Hoy Ferry.

Within five minutes of arriving at Innisgarth, I wished I'd booked 2 weeks instead of one. The property is welcoming, clean, modern and tastefully furnished and feels like a real home from home. Ideally situated within a few minutes drive from Kirkwall and yet in a superbly quiet rural location surrounded by fields and farmland, there is no through traffic and no noise. The welcome pack of delicious Orkney produce provided by the owners was a wonderful finishing touch and we received a warm welcome from Sheila who was happy to point out nice places to walk to locally and places to visit on our week's stay. We were reluctant to leave at the end of the week and I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone looking for excellent accomodation in Orkney. Stayed a week and we were lucky to have only 2 days of not so good weather. A must see is Skara Brae and the Brock of Gurness and obviously the Ring of Brodgar. Driving in Orkney is a dream as there's so little traffic. Possibly gets a bit busier during the summer months? The villa itself is so clean and everything you need is catered for. Kenny and Shelia, were very good hosts, and answered all of our questions via e-mail prior to our arrival, and supplied us with walking sticks for our holiday, very nice and friendly people.
The holiday home was excellently kept, spotlessly clean, and every thing was there to provide us with a trouble free holiday, and there was a hamper provided which we really enjoyed. The Orkney ice cream was the best.
Kirkwall the capital was just down the road and had all the things you would expect, gift shops, sports facilities food supermarkets, a new Tesco is being built which lokks very good.
We hird a car at the airport from W R Tullock, a very good service was provided by them, this also to be recommended.

We had a brilliant time whilst staying at Innisgarth. The accommodation provided everything we required. The owners ae lovely and were kind enough to provide us with a baby moses basket/bath for our baby son. Our 3 year old had a ball playing in the garden and the porch. The accommodation is well placed so that you are very close to the town but far enough out that you have lovely view and nice walks to the beach.

I would reccommend Innisgarth to anyone thinking of visiting Orkney.

      A Beautiful, homely, holiday home

Left on 07/16/2010 for a stay in July 2010

Wonderful accommodation. Everything was there that was needed so didn't have to bring things like bedding and towels and all the other little things you often find yourself without in self catering. Sheila was very friendly and helpful. The property was in a quiet position about 1 mile from Kirkwall. An ideal base for touring Orkney.

The cottage was spotless, modern and airy and Kenny and Sheila very friendly. The finishing touches were very thoughtful and the welcome pack lovely. If we come back to Orkney to stay again we would definitely look to stay here again.

Immaculate, well equipped accommodation for our first time Orkne

Left on 04/13/2010 for a stay in April 2010

We had a very friendly welcome and introduction from Kenny and Sheila. Sheila helped us out with some walks to go on and how to get places. The brochures were great and helped a lot choosing what to do. The house was just stunning, our oldest daughter said she would share her room with her wee sister if she got to stay in a house like this!!Location was just right for us with kids and car, close enough to town to walk if required and beach. We liked best the luxury and location of the accommodation. Least - the fact we had to take the kids with us!

      An excellent holiday experience

Left on 01/15/2010 for a stay in August 2009

The accommodation was of an exceptionally high standard with lots of thoughtful little details to make the stay more comfortable. The property has lovely views across the fields to the sea and is within reasonable walking distance of both the town and the beach at Scapa (although a car is useful). We appreciated the Welcome Pack provided and the children enjoyed the secret garden. The Bichans were very helpful and close at hand although not intrusive. The weather was not always kind to us (well this is the North!) so we were not able to try out the barbecue and outdoor seating. Previous holidays in Orkeney have been blessed with sunshine so it can happen! We will visit Orkney again as we have family there and will definitely consider staying in this propery again as it is both convenient to Kirkwall and extremely comfortable.

      Our Orkney experience

Innisgarth is quite simply the best holiday home we have ever come across in many years of self-catering holidays. It is very well appointed indeed, exceedingly comfortable and very well situated on the edge of Kirkwall, with a lovely rural outlook. The welcome pack is extensive-even a bottle of wine!-and the owners, who live next door are most helpful but never obtrusive. There is so much to explore in Kirkwall itself and in the Islands in general that many visits would be required even to scratch the surface. We have already booked our first return visit!

      A Windy Week in Orkney

Left on 01/08/2010 for a stay in September 2009

We spent a wonderful week in Orkney celebrating a 'significant' birthday. Innisgarth is a beautiful
cottage with everything provided and Kenny and Sheila were excellent hosts. The welcome pack was much appreciated. I think we chose one of the windiest weeks of the year but this did not stop us having a good time. The ceilidh dancing at the St. Magnus Centre on the Monday night was good fun.
Hope to make a return visit one day!

      "Excellent Christmas 2009 at Innisgarth"

Left on 01/07/2010 for a stay in December 2009

My wife Anna and myself wanted a Christmas with a difference. Coming from Norway (I am Scottish my wife Norwegian), Orkney seemed the right place because of historical links and the location...away from "Mainland Stress".

The service from Kenny and Shelia could not have been better, right from the moment he picked us up at the airport to the "Orkney Hamper" in the cottage. Best of all was the Christams Tree that Sheila had placed in the living room. (Great Touch)

Location was great, close enough to Kirkwall to spend days walking and shopping. Far enough to give "Country Living" in peace and quiet. In winter time you need a car to get around!

Supermarkets are only five minutes in the car and Kirkwall has a great "Old World" shopping streets.
      with very friendly folk.

The cottage with two bedrooms was modern, in excellent condition very clean and well maintained.
The beds were comfortable, which makes life a little more pleasant.

Kitchen was excellent "Home from Home" making the Christmas Dinner and Dining later over a bottle or two with excellent "Vino"

Use of the garage for the car helped a lot during the snow and cold period

Overall there was nothing to complain about Kenny was very helpful at all times nothing was any bother to him.

We had our alternative Jul & Christmas and it was everything we wished for. (Even a White Christmas)

We would defintely return and would hope to do so in the summer when we plan tour the islands.

      Hilsen fra Norge

      Anna og David
