Taken from Knysna tourism webpage:
Knysna is one of the Garden Routeˊs best known travel destinations and was recently named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World and one of the Top 25 in Africa in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards.
Surrounding Knysna are the towns of Sedgefield, Brenton, Noetzie, Rheenendal and Buffalo Bay. Indigenous forests, fynbos, lakes, rivers and mountains and beautiful coastlines combined with a moderate climate, make the Knysna area a natural Eden for flora and fauna lovers.
Here are some of the reasons why this destination is a world favourite:
Perfect 1. Weather all year round
ImageWhatever the season, Knysna stays green. Its warm, temperate climate makes it the perfect all-year-round destination.
The mild winters on the Garden Route, from May to August, ensure sunny and beautiful wind-still days and are often referred to as the “secret season”. In fact, Knysna has a phantom autumn – it is certainly not a real one, but we have nothing else to call it. The forests do not loose its leaves, people don’t hide indoors and children aren’t dressed like overweight sleeping bags with limbs. Truth be told, day-time temperatures rival a balmy European summer, with an average winter temperature around 19ˋC.
2. A Natural Paradise
ImageIn Knysna, nature quite literally knocks on your front door. The town nestles between the impressive Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, with the world-renowned forests encircling it like a protective mantle. This exceptional nature’s playground of beaches, lakes, mountains, forests and rivers offers an unforgettable holiday. Whether you’re an adventurous type or simply like it lolling around in the sun, Knysna has it all.
The 21 ha estuary is protected from the sea by the monolithic sandstone "Heads" - silent sentinels down the centuries of the rich history of this unique part of "paradise of earth". Adding to the richness of this incredible region is the spectacular Fynbos vegetation, contributing 8000 plant species to the Cape floral kingdom. The Knysna forest measures some 80, 000 ha in size and is managed according to strict conservation principles.
3. Our Animal Kingdom
ImageKnysna boasts an array of unique, some of them sadly endangered, species including the unique Knysna seahorse, the delicate Pansy shell of the lagoon and the endangered dwarf chameleon and Brenton Blue Butterfly. Knysna is also home to the only forest elephants in South Africa.
The Humpback and Southern Right whales visit the coastline during the months of May and September to breed in the calm, warm waters of the Indian Ocean and present a spectacular theatre of breaching, rolling, playing with calves and just generally lolling about. Spectators sit for hours watching these giant gentle creatures enjoying life on their way around the most southern tip of Africa.
The Knysna area is home to a wealth of bird life. Near-endemic avian wonders include the famous Knysna Loerie with its bright red feathers highly visible in flight. Then there’s the Narina Trogon, Knysna warbler, Knysna Woodpecker, chorister robin-chat and the forest canary. The lakes play host to a wide variety including the Malachite Kingfisher, the African Fish Eagle and our beaches provides the breeding grounds for the endangered African Black Oyster Catcher.
4. Adventure and Sport
ImageCome and play in our forests and dive into outdoor adventures like horse riding, hiking, yachting, fishing and canoeing. For a pure adrenalin rush get into the more extreme sports of abseiling, paragliding, scuba diving or water skiing and some of the best mountain bike routes in the country. Knysna has something for everyone - from the very young to the well matured and for every size, shape and temperament.
5. Mecca for the gourmand, whether it’s shopping, food or culture
In and around Knysna one will find a selection of fine restaurants, activities, cultural and heritage experiences, adventure and natural encounters to match your mood, age, physique and budget.
ImageWine and dine your way through a formidable array of fine restaurants, seafood taverns, pubs, coffee shops, delicatessens and other interesting eateries. From fusion food with an Oriental flavour to nouveau cuisine; from traditional South African dishes such as Cape Malay-inspired bobotie to a Xhosa delicacy known as umnqusho; from a meaty braai to a syrupy sweet koeksister, Knysna offers it all.
For the shopper, there are interesting outlets tucked away around every corner, including a quaint Waterfront shopping complex and authentic African traders.
It history and culture fascinate you, Knysna will intrigue you with a Gold Rush story of its own, a Timber Trade history interwoven with rich stories of early woodcutters and their special relationships with the forest elephants and the famous John Benn family whose sole responsibility was to navigate ships and boats through the treacherous Heads.
6. Last, but certainly not least, our beer and our oysters!
Image“Local is lekker” is a famous South African saying promoting the use of local products first and foremost. It Knysna this is quite easy to strive towards with two strong contenders, beer and oysters.
Mitchell’s Brewery opened 25 years ago in Knysna and is arguably the leading micro brewery in South Africa. Whether it’s Bosun’s Biiter, Forester’s Draught, Raven Stout, Ninety Shilling Ale or the new Mitchell’s Gold, the “beer that made Knysna famous” is unmistakable. Whatever your choice you can be assured that Mitchell’s Beers are unpasteurised, live ales, produced with the finest available ingredients of British mashing and German lagering techniques.
Oysters and Knysna are synonymous. The earliest records we have of the consumption and marketing of oysters in Knysna town are in newspaper cuttings of 1896.
The cultivated Knysna Oyster is famous for its fresh, nutty taste – unique to oysters in this area. Of course the wild coastal oyster, more salty in taste - is ever popular and also readily available at local eateries. During July the annual Knysna Oyster Festival draws thousands to celebrate the little mollusc, and more than 200 000 oysters are devoured in 10 days!
Just arrive, the rest comes naturally So there you have it, six wonderful reasons why fans coming to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ should base themselves in Knysna on South Africa’s famous Garden Route. With easy access by air and road, the experience in between matches will be as special as watching their favourite team competing.

Huddersfield, United KingdomA wonderful holiday rental
Left on 03/27/2013 for a stay in March 2013
My wife and another couple stayed here for three nights in March and couldn't have been happier with our choice. The three bedroomed bungalow has an ideal position with views over the lagoon and within walking distance of the town centre and all its attractions. The accommodation with three double bedrooms is ideal for friends or a family group and the owners have thought of everything to make this a real home from home.

Left on 02/08/2013 for a stay in January 2013
This is a real gem of a find. My wife, our 21 month old and I stayed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The place is well stocked, including a complimentary bottle of white wine, rusks, biscuits, sugar and some fresh milk to greet us. Neville and Liz were wonderful and full of suggestions for what to do during our stay in Knysna.
It's brilliantly located close to centre of town and shops etc are all within walking distance (unless you want to cart a ton of shopping back).
Stunning lagoon views. and a nice deck to chill in and relax watching the goings on of the townsfolk. Top spot!

We all hear about location location location, and beleive me when I say that you have got prime location, with the town and lagoon within easy walking distanc.
I enjoyed the most beautifull views of the lagoon and surounding scenery which one has sitting on the outside deck, or even from the lounge area.

Left on 08/22/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We recently returned from our third stay at Prospect Cottage in Knysna. We love staying at Prospect as the owners, Liz and Neville, have thought of everything. The main effect of staying at Prospect is absolute relaxation combined with carefree living. The cottage is close to the centre of town, with a magnificent view of the Knysna lagoon. We spent hours on the deck looking out at the incredible view. Knysna has a lot to offer tourists and has easy access to other towns and activities on the Garden Route. Liz and Neville have thoughtfully included brochures of the various activities and restaurants in Knysna, and have negotiated discounts for their guests on a variety of excursions. We are already planning our next trip to Prospect Cottage.

Prospect Cottage is an excellent self catering option for families visiting Knysna. The house is very well equipped and well maintained. Everything you may need will be available. The location is very good, easily accessible from the N2 main road but located in a very quiet side street (although at the busy time of the day some traffic noise from the N2 road is noticeable).
The best part of this place is the owners which are very kind and friendly making your stay even more pleasant.Response from Neville and Liz Knysna Garden Route. S.Africa - 08/15/2012

We enjoyed our stay at Prospect Cottage - we found it had ou comfortable beds and nice chairs to relax in - a must when you are getting on in years!
However, as head cook I do have a couple of observations to make. First, I thought that the cutlery and kitchen utensils had seen better days and perhaps could be renewed at not a lot of cost, ditto the frying pan which was unusable. Second, a pair of scissors woud have been useful.Response from Neville and Liz Knysna Garden Route. S.Africa - 02/07/2012

This is a great place to stay. The house is packed full of the things you might want on holiday, its spacious and well appointed and the owners were very helpful. I was a little put out by the strict arrival times, but that's because we were travelling a long distance to get there and I'm sure if you asked they would accommodate a later arrival! The house was really comfy and there is a grocers just across the road if you intend to self cater. Everything about this accommodation felt like a family home not just a rental, we were weary after safari and it couldn’t have served us better.
This isn't strictly to do with the accommodation but I didn't love Knysna - its the only place, apart from Cape Town, where the tourist info office told us not to walk alone at night, taxis were cheap and easy though. I think what shows the strength of this accommodation is that I'd go back even though Knsyna wasn't my favourite place in Sa!Response from Neville and Liz Knysna Garden Route. S.Africa - 01/29/2012

Left on 01/12/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We had a most enjoyable stay at Prospect cottage. We were made to feel most welcome by our hosts and the handover was both efficient and friendly. The house is in a wonderful location with close access to most attractions which suited our mixed age party. It was especially good to enjoy so many extras in the house that make a visit so much friendlier!. Especially enjoyed the well stocked library of books, games, brochures, magazines and videos for those times when some want to take a nap! Also very suitable for mixed ages. We had ages ranging from 19 -80 years staying together.
The views are very special and most restorative.
Being very keen users of the braai, we would have preferred a cooking area on the balcony and not around the side away from all the action but that is a small factor made up for by so many other perks.
There is also a fairly steep pathway to the entrance which might be a consideration if you have an older or less physically able person with you.
We had a few very hot days and would have loved an air conditioner in the lounge!
But all in all a lovely stay and would highly recommend for a comfortable holiday. Thanks so much to Neville and LizResponse from Neville and Liz Knysna Garden Route. S.Africa - 01/17/2012

Its the little touches that Neville and Liz do that really add up: the welcome milk in the fridge, bottle of wine, sherry, washing powder and them having already put the kettle on for our arrival on a cold miserable day.
The views are spectacular and the house just lovely to be in, my only slight complaint was that if you are there in a cold spell, the one electric heater isn't quite enough to heat the living room. But I'd go back in a flashResponse from Neville and Liz Knysna Garden Route. S.Africa - 11/23/2011

Prospect Cottage is truly a wonderfully comfortable and homely place to stay. Liz and Neville have really thought of everything especially the small things that many people overlook such as a layed out tray with tea, teapot and cups for a much needed cup of tea after a long trip, the flowers, and a bottle of wine and fruit. The house was clean and the view very inviting. What a pleasure to wake up to that magnificant view every morning. Our 3 year old also loved the place and didnt take long to regard it as "his home" as the DVD player and TV made it possible to watch his much loved "Charlie and Lola" whenever he needed to. We will definitely visit again. The cottage is very conveniently located and only takes a few minutes to get to all the sites in central Knysna. Many thanks Liz and Neville

This is indeed a 'home from home'. This is not the austere luxury of a hotel but comfortable, well equipped and spotless. The views over the Knysna lagoon towards The Heads make it difficult to leave the deck and to actually explore beyond Prospect Cottage! The cottage is well situated for easy access to shopping, tourist attractions and restaurants. And if the weather doesn't play along, there is TV, a selection of Dvd's, board games and a mini-library to keep all ages occupied. Safe off street parking completes a wonderful and affordable accommodation package. Cannot wait to return.

Hi Noreen and Harvey, You are always so welcome at Prospect Cottage and we hope you will come many more times in the years ahead. I always seem to find some new kitchen " goodie" after you and Barbi leave. This time a super measuring jug I use to fill the kettle. Was it your contribution ? Looking forward to your next visit. Stunning veiws, very comfortable and simple layout and especially good for my family, as I was travelling with children and mother in law. Pricing reasonable, for anywhere in Sa, especially for Knysna. After our last disaster at Knysna at Bouganvilla our faith was restored in Knysna.

Liz and Neville go the extra mile in providing the little luxuries - filter coffee, various teas, milk in the fridge, a bottle of wine as a welcome gift, soaps and shampoos in the bathrooms and a chocolate on the pillow ! Everything is well marked and the information available on what to do and where to go is extensive. The cottage is very comfortable and has all the amenities without being fussy. The view from the lounge and deck is spectacular - a wonderful getaway for a relaxing weekend.

These days it is very difficult to find accommodation on the Garden Route which are affordable & still have the following characteristics: Spacious, Comfortable, Close to amenities, have a view (Waterfront & Knysna Lagoon & Heads) from the outside sun deck & comes with a warm welcome from the Owners. We had a great time & will most definitely knock again on Prospect Cottage door.

We cannot speak highly enough of the welcome given by our hosts. The cottage is spacious, very well fitted out and all the little extras provided means I have no hesitation in saying this is where you should stay if in the Knysna area. Great location overlooking town waterfront and rivermouth, but off the main road so quiet and secure. Still cannot believe the value for money!!

It was lovely in every sense and there is nothing I would change from that weekend in anyway! The house was totally comfortable and I loved the attention to small detail (shampoo in the shower ... as I forgot mine at home) and the comfort!
Having coffee overlooking the stunning view of the Knysna lagoon and the Heads early morning was a pleasure and, having a good 'ol fashioned braai with the same stunning view - is what made it all worthwhile!
It's great value for money and affordable!!
We would definitely be going back for another weekend!
