Koblenz trip ideas:
DAY TRIPS - with and without bicycle
River Rhine: Daily vessel cruises will take you past magnificent scenery, enchanting castles and of course the legendary “Loreley” rock. The cruises of the Cologne-Düsseldorf-shipping company start from a pier near the “Deutsches Eck “. You will get there by car or if the weather is nice by bicycle or walking ( just 800-900m; take over the river Moselle with the small ferry boat every 10 minutes from 8.00 – 20.00 ) or take the small river Rhine ferry boat which passes by every half hour and berth at a jetty just few meters from our guest house. Please inquire in advance for departure times of the cruise vessels.
By the way: On all public transport, such as buses, trains and ships, you can take your bike and often you do not even pay extra.
The cruise to Bacharach takes approx. 4 ½ hours, passing the slopes of the vineyards, numerous castles and the “Loreley”. Disembark in Bacharach and visit this beautiful old town with timbered houses. Either you take the vessel back to Koblenz or take your bicycle and cycle comfortably back along the banks of the river Rhine to Koblenz (50 km), take a rest from time to time in the villages you pass through or taste a nice wine at a winery.
Just before your completion of your day's journey, approx. 1 km to Koblenz, you will pass the Königsbacher brewery, where you can eat very tasty and get freshly brewed beer. Certainly a nice conclusion of an impressive day trip.
If you are getting tired you can take a train from any station back to Koblenz.
River Moselle: Start again with a bike from our guest house. It is just short ride (aprox. 20 minutes ) to the main station in Koblenz. Get a train (departure aprox. every 15 Minutes; enquire departure times) to Cochem on the river Moselle. Cochem is beautiful place and worth to visit. If you like, make a detour to the castle nearby. The distance to Koblenz is 51 km. You can either cycle along the banks of the river or through the vineyards towards Koblenz. Of course you pass many wineries, with a little luck you might experience a wine festival.
River Lahn: Again, take your bike to the train station and take a train to Bad Ems on the river Lahn. Depending on the season, remarkable events might taking place.
Cycling down towards Koblenz, you cross a beautiful narrow river valley, where you can find many food and beverage kiosks, ideal for a cold beer. Arriving at the water mouth of the river Rhine, you should not to miss the exhibition of old knight objects in the castle “Lahneck “ located on the other side of the river Lahn. To get from there to our house just stay on that side of the Rhine and then go about 5 km down the river Rhine to suburb “Urbar”, which is diagonally opposite from our house on the other side of the river. Before you take the ferry to cross the river Rhine, stop for a bite to eat in this restaurant near the jetty which offers you delicious meal and a good wine.
Surrounding of Koblenz – by car
Koblenz is located right in the middle of four mountain ranges, providing spectacular landscapes.
Especially worth to visit is the beautiful region of the Eifel with, for example the monastery “Maria Laach”, the “Eifeler Maaren” (submerged and extinct volcanoes) and the formular 1 race track “Nürburgring”.
See also the butterfly museum between Bendorf and Neuwied that is led by a noble lady.

More travel info about Koblenz: The history and sites of Koblenz, located where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, stretch back to Roman times. No visitor to Koblenz should skip a tour of the Saalburg—the most fully-reconstructed Roman fortress in Germany. Koblenz (Latin (ad) Confluentes, confluence or (at the) merging (rivers), Covelenz, Cobelenz; local dialect Kowwelenz) was one of the military posts established by Drusus about 8 BC, and the town celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1992. Koblenz is situated in the beautiful landscape between the Rhine and Moselle rivers and is surrounded by 4 mountain ranges. The town has much to offer anyone who is interested in culture and history (and buildings). Its charming alleys and squares with their historic monuments and buildings as well as promenades along the rivers make it a friendly and welcoming town for many visitors yearly from around the world. There are many restaurants and wine tasting rooms located in these areas where you can wine and dine in or outdoors, weather permitting. Many local wines can be tasted from the steep vineyards along the Moselle and Rhine rivers.

Left on 09/27/2012 for a stay in September 2012
The apartment was clean and spacious. That said it is in a construction zone. No view of the river since a wall was being built right outside the window about 30 ft away. Parking was a nightmare as was finding our way in and out. The owner was not around so he gave me the number of a gentleman who sent a very nice women to let us in. She spoke no English and my German is limited so the tour of the apartment was short. You must provide your own soap, detergent garbage bags, paper products and the like, unlike any other apartment we have rented. I understand that the construction has been going on for over a year, so I believe the Owner should have said something.
