The Gremos House

Gremos house (gremos means cliff and is the name of the area that the house is located on) is the cutest 'little house' and is very colorful and playful. It stands on an excellent spot at the edge of the village on a location where no cars are passing by, so your children can play safely outside, there is a small field with grass just outside the house, and all around you will not find any cars. The house is, just like most of our houses, an old stone built house, made middle nineteenth century. When we found it, it was abandoned and In a bad shape, but with all the love that we have for houses we renovated this lovely house and made it into... the gorgeous place that it has become now. The house has a central courtyard from which all the rooms can be reached. The only rooms that are connected from within are the living room with the bedroom downstairs and the bedroom downstairs with the bedroom upstairs. This means that to go to the bathroom, one goes through the courtyard. In Greece this was practically always the way that the Greeks used to build their houses: the toilet and kitchen were reached from outside. That is also the way that we liked to keep it, in order to maintain as much of its originality as was possible.

The living room is big, and has the typical kamara (the big arch), the chochlakia (the small pebbled mosaic pattern on the floor) and the pataras (the high raised wooden carved platforms with beds/matress that are on either sides of the arch, and that each has a separate stairs leading to it). The colors are soft and bring an atmosphere of peace over the ones using it. The chochlakia on the floor provide an excellent way of pressure point acupuncture, and are highly recommended by all kinds of medical advisers. We have built a roof light in this house for optimum happiness, and there is a sitting corner as well as a dining area.

The bedrooms are above one another and the top bedroom is reached through a narrow stairs. The top bedroom has a double bed, and is really very cozy and romantic. This bedroom should not be used by elderly, infirm or disabled people. The bedroom down has a bunkbed (one single bed on top of the other with a stairs attached to it), so this room sleeps 2, but only on top of each other. By spring time we will be able to make pictures of this bed, but for now, we just deal with a description.

The kitchen has all that one needs, and the washing machine is placed in this room. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and sink, and is sufficiently equipped.

The courtyard is small but very sweet looking. There is a stairs in this courtyard that leads to the first veranda with a dining table for outside breakfast, lunch and dining. Then from this veranda, there is a stairs leading to the roof terrace with sunbeds and its spectacular views. This roof terrace has a big lounging area as well, with a pergola over it, so one could sleep here and hang out all day on this spot while enjoying a glass of wine while looking over the valley and the sea.Read more

The area of the gremos is in the old village, a bit on the edge, but again this house is in a greek neighborhood as well, but a rather quiet one. The Gremos house is a little gem in the village and the colors make it stand out in comparison to the rest and have made the neighbors loving it and cherishing it, so be sure they will give you a smile and tell you hello when they see you.
