Description from the owner
When we opened Apple House in early 2009, we wanted to provide comfortable, reasonably-priced Japanese accommodation in this peaceful yet very convenient neighborhood of Kyoto City. Comments made by many of the guests who have stayed with us praise the cleanliness and comfort of the house, particularly the quality of sleep, and also the ease of getting around Kyoto on the city's excellent transport system.
Apple House is a detached, two-bedroomed house in a conservation area on Kyoto's famous east side. Tourist hotspots such as Gion and Kiyomizu Temple are easily reached by bus, train or bicycle ( we provide two modern ones with gears...Read more

Additional Location Information
Apple House is located in a quiet conservation area of Kyoto City where guests can have the best of both worlds - you can easily access the main tourist areas by excellent public transport, and can sleep very well at night ( many people mention how well they can sleep ).
Shugakuin is a very traditional neighborhood of Kyoto. Many families have lived here for generations and old farmhouses can still be found in the midst of more modern properties. There are several temples and shrines within walking distance, including the splendid Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Manshuin and Shisendo temples. Simply walking or cycling around the narrow lanes is a pleasure with so many immaculate gardens to see.
Three good supermarkets, a 7-11, bakeries, coffee shops, and other amenities including the local train station are ten minutes walk away from Apple House. The frequent ( every ten minutes ) No. 5 bus stop is just five minutes walk from Apple House. This bus runs south past Ginkakuji ( the Silver Pavilion ), Kyoto Handicraft Center, Heian Shrine, Kyoto Zoo, Gion and though the congested shopping area to Kyoto Station. Gion is just 25 minutes ( 230 Yen ) away by bus.

Falconara Marittima, ItalyAn unforgettable week in Kyoto
Left on 05/07/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Me and my friends stayed in Kyoto for a week in april, during the cherry blossom season.
Hiroko was extremely kind both before and during our stay, she left a lot of travel material in the house, gave us useful advice on what to see and even picked us up at the nearest subway station.
Apple House is a lovely traditional japanese house with everything you may need (washing machine, wireless internet, hairdryer, etc.) and plenty of space for 4 people.
Don't worry about futons, despite what westerners may think they are really very comfortable and at the end of your stay you'll get addicted to it (and to tatami as well).
The neighborhood is very quiet and not central but bus N.5 is perfect for getting to Kyoto centre and JR station in around 20 minutes, so if you have a JR Pass you can visit Osaka or Miyajima and be back at apple House by the end of the day.
There were also two bicycles available, we didn't get a chance to use them but next time we'll come we will surely ride them!
We absolutely recommend apple House for a short or long stay,
arigatou gozaimasu Hiroko!

Everything at this place was excellent. Hiroko was a great host, picking us up at 11pm, showing us around the place and dropping us at the train station on our last day. We loved the house, it has everything we needed for our 5 nights. Sleeping on tatami mats was very comfortable. We enjoyed staying in this quiet surburb instead of the touristy places and the neighbours were very friendly.
Shops and train stations were within 10-15mins walk and we all got to know the No.5 bus well.
We would definitely stay at apple House again if we ever get another chance to visit Kyoto.
Thank you Hiroko! -

The apple House is a clean and tidy place to stay in the suburbs of Kyoto if you do not want a hotel in the centre. Hiroko is very nice and helpful. We were picked up and dropped off and everything went smoothly for our 7 night stay. The wifi was strong and electric blankets kept us warm. My young daughters liked all 'the apple stuff' and ornaments in the house. Thanks Hiroko.

Left on 12/22/2012 for a stay in December 2012
We did not want to be confined by a tourist hotel in a tourist area. We wanted access to the sights of Kyoto but we want to experience life in a typical Japanese suburb, taking the bus, walking to the shops for provisions and cooking some meals for ourselves. Apple House and Hiroko provided this for us. We slept well, walked to all the sites and caught the bus back to our new home. As others have mentioned the sleep quality is great withe stream gurgling downhill.
It was wonderful to have laundry facilities and all the books, tips and maps for us. A big bonus was that the Imperial Villa was just up the hill! Less than 5 minutes. One still has to get permission down at the the palace but this is easily done. Free English audio is available when you arrive.
Transport was so easy, no 5 bus, the subway, a little walk but it brought you home via the supermarket and we even used the local train to take us part of the way to the wonderful Fushimi Inari shrine with its 1000 tori.
Hiroko was so kind and generous with collecting us from the station and her gift of homemade bread. She was never intrusive but it was good to know she was just an email away!
Great wi Fi, nothing we disliked except leaving! However we gained so much confidence for our travels up north to places less frequented by foreign tourists such as Hirazumi and Nyuto Onsen. -

Left on 12/19/2012 for a stay in November 2012
I stayed at apple House for five days in late November, and it was a wonderful experience for several reasons. Firstly, the personal and responsive service from Hiroko-san: she arranged to pick me up and drop me off at the local train station, and when it seemed that she might not be able to drop me off as planned, she went the extra mile to make arrangements for my choice of a taxi to the station or microbus to the airport, which I very much appreciated! She also answered my emails promptly and suggested a nice shopping area where I could find items I was looking for.
Apple House itself is adorable, with many thoughtful touches inside. It has everything you could need, with very clear instructions for using appliances and gas. Hiroko-san's introductory tour and explanations made it very easy. The deep soaking tub in the traditional bathroom is a must in November! The kitchen is well-equipped and it was very nice to make breakfast and/or dinner for myself; there are also a good selection of restaurants in the area and the information packet in the house lists (among many other things) the hours and which shops provide menus in english.
The house is in a very quiet neighborhood, quite convenient to attractions on the east side and central part of Kyoto, and the bicycles provided with apple House are great for visiting the many beautiful temples and shrines in the area. Eizan Railway is less than 10 minutes' walk, with connections to rail service to the rest of Kyoto, and there is a bus stop in less than 5 minutes' walk that goes all the way to Kyoto Station.
All in all a lovely home-away-from-home with thoughtful service and great value! Domo arigato gozaimasu, Hiroko-san!

My boyfriend and I stayed at apple House for about 10 days, and it was absolutely amazing! The house is gorgeous, traditional Japanese style, and has everything you need, including wifi which was very important for us. There's also a washing machine, TV and DVD player, CD player etc, and the kitchen is fully equipped. The futons are really comfortable, and falling asleep to the sound of the river outside was so peaceful! The location is great - the area is beautiful and the neighbours are really friendly :) The bus stop, local train station and subway station are all within walking distance and easy to find. Hiroko and David are wonderful hosts, picking us up from the subway station on our arrival and dropping us off when we left, despite the early hour! Overall, I cannot recommend apple House strongly enough :)

We loved Kyoto and apple House is the perfect place to stay. The house is close to the bus and train to see all the sights of the city. An all day bus pass is only 500 yen and there are maps on how to get to all the sights. It is great place to relax after long days of sight seeing. The upstairs bedrooms with the futon and tatami mats are really comfortable and we slept great. The gurgling of the creek next to the house added to the peacefulness. Hiroko was very gracious and picked us up and dropped us off at the subway station. She helped us with getting to know the neighborhood and house. We stayed five nights and would highly recommend five or more nights. Great running by the river or to the temple up the mountain.

Hiroko was kind in greeting us at the subway and driving us to the house. She also showed us around by recommending local restaurants, explaining the transit system and giving us good maps of the area. However we found the house very far from attractions and with a small child it made traveling more difficult. The stairs to the second floor were also quiet steep and my husband had to carry our son as I couldn't. It's great to have a kitchen but because we ate out all the time we didn't make the most of it. I would recommend this place to people who don't mind the distance to attractions and who don't have small children as it was a taste of real life in Kyoto.

Dear Stacey, Adam ( and Leo! )
Many thanks for your review and comments about your recent stay. Your rating is lower than we usually receive from people, and I thought that I should mention a couple of points for the benefit of other visitors to Kyoto:
Japanese staircases are usually steep. This maximises the living space inside houses, which is necessary in a country where land prices are so high and houses cannot be very big!
Kyoto has all kinds of attractions from north to south, east to west. It is true that Apple House is a little far ( 30 minutes ) from the main shopping street ( Shijo ) where most department stores are located. However, wherever you stay in Kyoto you will need to take public transport, or cycle, to get around the main sites. You were travelling with your wonderful one-year old son ( it is a pity that he is too young to remember the trip! ) which must have slowed your progress around the city down. We want guests have a real Japanese experience in a peaceful yet convenient Japanese neighbourhood while paying very reasonable rates.
Please bring Leo back when he is older and you can all see more places together!
Kind regards,
Hiroko.

San Francisco, CAExperience a typical Japanese home in a lovely neighborhood
Left on 07/11/2012 for a stay in May 2012
We had a wonderful stay at apple house. Great for couples or traveling friends. Within easy reach of public transportation. The house is charmingly situated along a stream and a residential walking path (you cannot drive straight up to the house.) Nearby are to two grocery stores - one of them is open 24 hours, and several wonderful restaurants.
The house is five star for us, and the price is right! Simple, incredibly clean, and quiet. It's wonderful to have your own space, be able to make your own food in the kitchen, relax in the soaking tub at the end of the day, and enjoy one of the movies thoughtfully provided. The stairs to the upstairs bedroom are very steep, in the typical Japanese style. I would not recommend apple House for people who have trouble walking up and down stairs or if you have to go to the bathroom a lot at night (the toilet is downstairs).
We love to hike and walk. For this the house is ideal. Walk north through the neighborhood, and you are soon in a wooded area of Kyoto filled with walking paths, streams, and temples. The best part of the trip for us was our nature walk. We found a temple in a clearing (Manshu-In Temple) and had the most incredible lunch there. What a surprise!
Apple House's tatami floors and futon bedding are a real treat. There is a clothes washer and a clothesline for hanging clothes dry (no dryer). For a westerner, the kitchen appliances and bathroom will be small, but this is part of the charm of staying in a authentic Japanese home.
Apple House was sparkling clean when we arrived, and in consideration to the owners we left the home in clean condition also. Wow, this gesture was really appreciated by Hiroko!! -

Apple House is a great alternative to staying in a hotel room. It is located in a pleasant suburban part of Kyoto, close to forest lands but also only 20-30min from the city. Public transport is close by and the taxis are in any case cheap to use for a family. The house has all you need for comfortable living with a Japanese flavour. Our family of three enjoyed every minute of our stay and recommend it to fellow travellers.

This is a fantastic place to stay. A wonderful way to experience Kyoto and meet local people. Located in a quiet, friendly area. It's a little out of town but has good transport links and best of all bikes are provided. The bikes are great for getting you to local temples and The Philosophers Path and give you little glimpses of Japanese life you might otherwise miss. The house is very comfortable and equipped with everything you need. The owners are extremely helpful and welcoming.

The apple house was overall very satisfying. The home owners were wonderful and very accommodating. The house is great and affordable. If you are looking for a true Japanese experience look no further. A traditional Japanese style house, in a Japanese neighborhood. The location isn't the best, but there are bus stops and train stations within walking distance, and the owners will pick you up and drop you off when you arrive and leave. I highly recommend the apple house.

Dear Tony,
Thank you very much for your positive 5-star rating!
During your hectic short weekend here, you managed to visit several of Kyoto's tourist hotspots including Kinkaku-ji ( The Golden Temple ), Fushimi-Inari Shrine and Higashi Hongan-ji....well done. I notice that you just awarded 3 stars for the location of Apple House - you had almost no time to explore and appreciate the local area of Shugakuin which most of our guests grow to love and even return to. Apple House really becomes a "home to return to". Please come back for a week or so and see what this area has to offer!
Thank you again and warm regards,
Hiroko. -

Hiroko surprised us tremendously by picking us up at the train station! The brief orientation on the ride to apple House proved invaluable. Once at the house, we immediately felt at home. I can honestly and without hesitation say that I enjoyed the futon at apple House more than those at the posh ryokan we visited after we left Kyoto. I still dream about that futon!
Apple House is relatively close to a bus stop, a train stop, a place to shop, and a place to eat. I did enjoy buying groceries and doing a little cooking myself. My greatest disappointment was that I couldn't buy a futon from the nearby shop to bring home!
On the train to the Ise Peninsula, my husband and I were already talking about our next stay at apple House and how we wanted our friends to visit there also when they next travel to Japan. Apple House is now one of our favorite places to stay in Japan.

We stayed in apple House for 7 nights in January after staying in a traditional "machiya" in Gion district the week before. (Old and very cold) Apple House is relatively modern, warm, and far more comfortable. Our concerns about cost of utilities were groundless as it turned out they cost us less than 4,000 yen for the week in January.David looked after us well and the rental was reasonable.
From the map supplied we wondered if we would find apple House was inconvenient. Not at all - actually the comfort and quiet made it a better place to relax. (In Gion we had noisy groups of tourists walking past at all hours of day and night.) Apple House is tucked away alongside a small river in a regular Japanese neighbourhood, close to public transport, restaurants and shops. Ideal. -

We thoroughly enjoyed our 7-week stay at apple House. Please accept our warm and sincere thanks for everything. Our stay has been both pleasurable and memorable. Everything related to the house, from the initial booking to organising our departure went without a hitch. Thank you! Particular thanks for the tips on sightseeing and events, plus helping out when Lynn was unwell. These kindnesses made our time here much easier and enjoyable. We have enjoyed: meeting the friendly neighbours and seeing how the "locals" live; the ease of access to both trains and buses; the convenience of great local shops, ATM etc.; the quiet and safe neighbourhood; we could go on (and on). All in all, you have a great setup for visitors to Kyoto. We thoroughly recommend apple House to prospective visitors. Wishing you the very best.

The house was in a peaceful, friendly area of town, very close to the beautiful Takaragaike park that is well worth a visit. Everything that you could need is within walking distance, a number of different retail stores offer all you require for your stay in Kyoto. Some of them owned by individuals that are not part of a bigger company! A short bus or subway trip away from many of the big attractions in Kyoto, it is far enough detached that you get a real feel of the culture of the city, rather than just seeing the tourist hotspots.
The house itself is clean and homely, with ample facilities and a very large room in which to sleep, with very comfortable Japanese-style beds(Futons). The neighbours were also very friendly and came along and made themselves known to us. Certainly well recommended for any visitors to Kyoto! -

Hello Richard and Pearl!
Many thanks for this review two years after your stay here. ( I hope the wedding went smoothly! ) I notice that you have only given 3 stars for location and remember that from 1 to 5 January the local supermarkets were shut and you had to walk down to Ichijoji in pretty cold weather. We now make a point of warning guests who stay over New Year that many shops close.
The snow is incredible this year in the Japanese Alps - you really should come over and ski.

I'm not sure what I imagine apple House would be for our family but it turned out to be fantastic. Our stay for two months in this lovely house which initially seem small, suddenly turned out to be large enough for 3 adults and a child. The host was always available if you need them for any instruction on how to use all the electrical convenience. Value is actually excellent, if you have 3 adults and a child, and as for comfort it is excellent too but if you are not comfortable sitting on the tatami floor, one might find it difficult. As for the washing facilities - I can't describe that the host had thought of everything. It was great!. Our family has enjoyed the stay so much, that we are going back in april and hoping to go back in 2013!

Once in 2009 and again in 2010. I plan to stay again soon.
Apple house is a great base for exploring Kyoto. You have easy access to bus, trains, and subway. The bikes provided really open up Kyoto to exploration. The philosopher's path is about 10 minutes away by bike and so are countless shrines. If you ride down the river path you can be in Gion in no time and there are no cars along the path. All you need to do is pick a direction and you will see something interesting. Maps and schedules are provided, or you can ask David or Hiroko.
David and Hiroko are extremely helpful and friendly. Hiroko picked me up late at night after an exhausting 32 hour trip. She coordinated in advance to have some food and drinks in the fridge. Gestures like that made my stays memorable and stress-free.
The house itself is very clean and comfortable. There are tatami mats in the living spaces, laundry, and a really nice shower. The house is on a private way with a small stream out front that puts you to sleep at night. It is very relaxing. There are grocery stores, bakery, pharmacy, restaurants, and countless other things in less than 10 minutes walk - 5 minutes by bike. Everyone I met in the neighborhood was extremely friendly and helpful too.
I highly recommend Hiroko and David and their apple house.

I highly recommend apple House, and I am a very particular traveler. We stayed in 3 houses during our 2+ months in Kyoto, and apple was by far the very best.
Location: We used apple House as our base for travel throughout Japan. It's in the best neighborhood in Kyoto. Transportation is ideal. Bus, subway and the Eiden Eizan train are nearby. Lots of great restaurants, French bakeries, a 100-Yen bargain store, 7-11, and shops of all kinds are right in the neighborhood. A big plus are the exquisite gardens of Shugaku-in Imperial villa, a short walk (and free!).
House: Absolutely Spotless! No detail is overlooked. (I cannot emphasize enough how important this is when you're traveling. The other houses we rented were dirty--yuck.) Fully stocked with everything.
Service: Whatever you need, Hiroko will do her best to provide it. She drew personalized maps; found volunteer guides; translated for us (her English is perfect); stored our luggage when we left and personally delivered it to our next house. She even rescued us! One night we were lost and called her for directions. In a flash she had driven over, picked us up and brought us safely back to apple House! This kind of care sets Hiroko (and David, too) far apart from any other owners.
We wanted a clean, comfortable, safe, peaceful environment in a convenient location--We found that, and much more, only at apple House.
There is indescribable magic at apple House. You may be in Kyoto for a short or long stay, but if you stay at apple House you will never forget--or regret--it. It will be with you forever.
This is the only place we would stay in Kyoto. We are dreaming of returning--soon!

Misawa, Japanour stay in the 'Apple House' in Kyoto
Left on 01/25/2012 for a stay in December 2011
We stayed for 6 days in the apple house in December of 2011 until the 2nd of January of 2012. We loved the house, felt very at home right away. Hiroko was so nice to pick us up from the subway and brought us to the house. We are a family of 4, our daughters are 8 and 4. She explained everything about the house and showed us around. We had previous experience with Japanese futons and I was a bit worried about the comfort level but we all slept wonderful! I actually really loved the upstairs bedroom, it felt so cozy and the electric mats to warm up the beds are a real treat. It was very nice that there was a washing machine as well, I used it a couple of times and there are 2 areas to hang your wash. We felt we had a very authentic feel of being in Japan by staying in this wonderful vacation house.
We will absolutly recommend it to our friends and come back again if we're in Kyoto again. So much to see still.
The location is also very convenient to travel from with public transportation. The bus is the best way to get around, it's a pleasant 10 minute walk from the house to the bus stop and it will get you to a lot of great sightseeing spots of Kyoto.
Thank you Hiroko for a great stay in your lovely 'Apple House'!!
