      Charming, convenient home base

Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We are a couple who invited our 21 year old son to travel during his semester in Japan. Our 5 nights in the machiya were the most convenient and economical of the ten days spent touring. The apartment is well situated for sightseeing in Kyoto as well as surrounding locales: Kobe, Nara , Osaka. It is thoughtfully designed and equipped. We would highly recommend this rental for a family of four or four very close friends ( only one bathroom and sleeping quarters separated by a simple Japanese screen).

      I shall certainly reccomend it.

      Great home in nice location

Left on 09/07/2012 for a stay in August 2012

This is a residential part of Kyoto, charming and close to many small restaurants and stores. A perfect location for a sightseeing base and you can live like a local. House has all modern conveniances, but still has a classic exterior..Yes the photos are accurate, it Is that cute but standard size for a japanese home. (dont forget that a wide angle is used for interior shots) Comfortable for four adults with two separate bedrooms on the second floor.
We loved the house and the area !

      Lovely Experience

Left on 08/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012

My family of three just spent four days luxuriating at the Machiya townhouse in Gion Kyoto. I wanted a Japanese experience with privacy and that is what we got and more. The house was equipped with tatami floor, futons, ofuro (Japanese style bath) and many other typical Japanese style comforts. The wood every where contributed to the fresh minimalist feeling of luxury and peacefulness, which was a welcomed contrast to our busy, exhausting sightseeing schedule. It is very conveniently located close to many lovely temples and shrines. Thank you Lucille, Shingo and Justine

Left on 07/05/2012 for a stay in June 2012

This place is beautiful, and having two bikes to use made getting to know Kyoto easy. Everything works, and is easy to use. Necessary condiments, well stocked crockery and cooking gear, clean, comfortable and enough space for 4 though we were only two. A quick walk to Gion. Fascinating area and wonderful city. The manager was great, checked on us and solved any problem attentively. I love it. Really good books and Dvds . Old Kyoto the best book for discovering some charming traditional spots you would otherwise not know of.

      Lovely neighborhood, comfortable house

Left on 06/07/2012 for a stay in May 2012

This was our first time renting a home rather than a hotel in Kyoto. The neighborhood is not especially convenient for the subway or bus, but we managed. It was quiet and the neighbors were friendly.

The directions to get there were just fine, and the manager dropped in to say hi soon after we arrived. We were expecting a computer, as stated on the website, but told that it was no longer available. We suggest updating your website as well as the appliance guide in the house. There's got to be a better way to explain how to use the water heater!

The machiya is comfortable, but not elegant. It was fairly clean, though there was dust under the bed, hair in the bathroom sink drain and the garbage bins needed washing. The western beds were very comfortable, and we enjoyed the convenience of the washing machine.

Left on 05/09/2012 for a stay in April 2012

From booking on the website to being greeted at the door by Shuji everything went like clockwork including the loction directions.
The Machiya was very clean and comfortable and well laid out for such a small space. Instructions for using the appliances were good and helpful. However we would recommend a couple of coat hooks in the vestibule to hang coats, especially on a wet day. The location was very good once you get the hang of the transport. All in all a very enjoyable and pleasant stay.

      Quiet and very convenient

Left on 04/23/2012 for a stay in April 2012

Small but lovely house tucked away down a little alley, very convenient for Kiyomizudera temple area and central Tokyo, also not far from Kyoto main station. We stayed here - unfortunately only for 2 nights, too short! - with our teenage daughters in the middle of april. The house is well equipped and has wonderful cosy warm duvets which kept us warm in the chilly april weather.
We had the map to find the house which we gave to the taxi driver - he was doubtful about where exactly it was but stopped right outside. It's about 1000 Yen fare from the station.
We walked to the Kiyomizudera temple area from here - about 10 mins - and spent most of the day wandering round the temple and the shopping streets. Gion and Maruyama Park are also within about 20 mins to 1/2 hr walk.
A very good base to explore Kyoto.

A stunning retreat tucked away in a quiet residential section of Gojo near the heart of the city. We walked everywhere to stunning parks, breathtaking temples and shrines, amazing food and great shopping. We really appreciated the quiet after long days of adventure. The guide books, other guest suggestions and other materials at the machiya were particularly helpful. We loved every second of our stay.

      Tranquility amidst modernity in Kyoto

Left on 01/08/2012 for a stay in December 2011

Somehow, in my mind, I had a few pre-conceived ideas what the Gojo Machiya would look like. Although, the area is very modern and suburban, the lane reaching to the machiya itself is timeless.

The one thing that I enjoyed very much was the tranquility of the neighbourhood. The main road and the Kiyomizu-Gojo train station were only 10min walk away but you would never know because it was so quiet.

The house was immaculately kept and very well equipped, we enjoyed the satellite TV very much. The rooms and beds were so comfortable, we fell asleep once our heads hit the pillows! Even when winter nights were cold in Kyoto, the machiya was warm and cozy inside.

I would really like to stay there again. Although this was my third time in Kyoto, I would say that it was my most enjoyable one to date. Everyone involved were so helpful and friendly.

Last but not least, I appreciate the concise information given. The what, when, who and how were all very clearly stated. I really really understood what was required of me.

I hope our stay did not inconvenienced you and the neighbours.

      Thank you very much!!!

Love the satellite tv..hehehe.. The beds were so comfy!!

Stay here! Exceptionally clean, all the amenities one might consider, great advice about local restaurants and sites provided in rental, and great location. Even includes two bicycles. Only advice is to print photos provided by owner before you leave for Kyoto as they will be very helpful in locating the place by you and taxi driver...down a small alley way.

Grandma Karen looking forward to returning to Gojo Machiya!

Left on 11/19/2011 for a stay in October 2011

I have been to Japan many times and Kyoto is my favorite city to visit. My traveling buddy (Grandma ann) and I have often wondered what it would be like to stay in a machiya and I was thrilled to find, through Trip advisor, that there are rentals available. Gojo Machiya met our criteria: location and some western-style furniture. Shuji was delightful, it was great having a laptop with internet access, and wonderful to go "home" after a long day sightseeing! The only drawback for some would be the steep stairwell to get to the bedroom with the bath on the first floor.

The stairwell - yes, it is rather steep but also a typical characteristic of any existing Machiyas in Kyoto. It is part of the Machiya design, and what it is now is far better than what it used to be before the renovation!
We look forward to welcoming you back to Kyoto again in the near future, and all the best to yourself and Ann.
      Warmest regards,

Much better than a hotel, elegant and convenient

Left on 07/31/2011 for a stay in July 2011

To start with, the directions were wonderful, with the photo address causing some hilarity at the taxi rank at Kyoto station. Once you settle in with your suitcases, public transport is easy. The machiya is close to several buses, including the tourist route Raku 100, and lots of buses heading to the station and to important shrines. The Keihan railway is a 5 min walk providing access to Fushimi-Inari with its many Tori gates, and connects to the JR Nara line at Tofukuji. Many of the major Kyoto sights are within walking distance, including Kiyomizu and the Yasaka shrine. Kyoto is an interesting city. It can be easy to see only the modern bits, but staying at Gojo Machiya really helps with visiting the old parts, especially in the evenings. The machiya is in a gated alleyway off a relatively modern street, but all around are quiet streets with small restaurants and many people in traditional dress (managed to spot one geisha, or maybe maiko, running from the rain sheltered by the umbrellas of her helpers).

The house is truly beautiful, one of the best places we have stayed anywhere. It is bigger than I expected, with a good sized living area and well equipped kitchen, and an excellent wet room downstairs, with separate toilet. Upstairs there is one "proper" bedroom, with a connected tatami room separated by sliding paper walls. The tatami room is large and would easily fit two. However, it is more suited to a family with children than to friends traveling together - you need to leave the partitions open at night for the tatami room to benefit from the air conditioning. As mentioned by many reviewers, the house is very well designed, and makes maximum use of space. It has every thing you would need, with high tech controls ( automatic filling bath) and features (HD TV, with many English channels including Fox movies, BBC news), a washing machine (downstairs) with a great drying area outside (upstairs), WiFi and a laptop (immediately grabbed by the teenager), and bikes, which were a bit tough going in the high temperatures of July. The air conditioning was greatly appreciated. Very detailed instructions were provided for all equipment - it takes 10 minutes study to switch on the TV!

I intend to recommend the machiya to all friends travelling to Kyoto. The only drawback is that the stairs are a little steep for small children, and like many places in Japan, there is little natural light downstairs, sacrificed for privacy when neighbours are very close. The machiya beats any modern hotel for space and convenience, and is rivalled only by the wondeful Kyoto ryokans.

Left on 05/02/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We first stayed here in July last year, and enjoyed ourselves so much we booked to come back for two weeks this time. The house is in an ideal location, walking distance from two train stations and the main shopping aree of the city. Plenty of room inside for three of us (two adults and one five-year-old). Inside is very clean, and all the furnishings are of a high standard. The two Western-style beds are very comfortable, and our son loved sleeping in a futon on the floor.

We're now planning another trip to Kyoto because even after a further two weeks we still haven't seen it all!

Don't stay in a hotel- Stay here

Left on 08/11/2010 for a stay in July 2010

Booking and staying in this Machiya was a pleasure from start to finish. The owners were particularly helpful with Yukiko even booking us a ferry journey later on in our trip which we were struggling to book due to language difficulties.
The Machiya was well located with a number of local shops around (if you looked) and staying here felt like you were very much part of the community.
Once we worked out how to get around principally walking at first then buses and trains when we worked out the routes Kyoto was a doddle and pleasure to travel around. In the summer heat it was a joy to come back to our temporary home and lovely air conditioning.
The wireless internet access was extremely useful particularly with the in house laptop for research and our daughters face book needs!
I recommend you book it -dont stay in a hotel.

My daughter and I recently stayed at the Gojo Machiya in Kyoto. We both loved Kyoto and the machiya was the perfect way to experience the culture in depth. The location is ideal - only a short walk from Gion, Kiyomizu-dera, and other sites. It is also very close to trains and buses, so getting around was really easy. It was great to have a kitchen, laundry facilities, cable television and internet access. I am already planning my next trip. Thanks for a truly memorable experience.

We would highly recommend staying here if you are
after a comfortable, stylish, modern yet authentic
experience of Kyoto! This was our second time to
Kyoto and we were very happy to have discovered this beautiful townhouse - such a great location
close to the river and trains and also close to heaps of beautiful shrines in the east of the city. The townhouse is excellently equipped with a designer feel - just gorgeous! Quite spacious too for Japanese standards and with two separate rooms
upstairs it was perfect for us and our little girl. The bikes were fantastic to use (we felt like locals!) and a taxi up to Sanjo-Dori with lots of great eateries or even Kyoto station was only around 600 yen. Rob and Yuki made organising everything very pleasant and easy and it really felt as if we were staying at a friends place. Wonderful accommodation, you won't be disappointed! We look forward to coming back soon!
