Description from the owner
Villa Hermosa is a beautiful private guesthouse located 7km from the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano National Park & Arenal Lake. The guesthouse is in a quiet local neighborhood "away from it all" yet close enough to get to the action when you want it! There is a large pool with cascading waterfall and a large deck for laying in the sun, watching the birds or just watching the volcano. The best part is...you don't have to share it with anybody else!!!
The natural surroundings here give you an experience of Costa Rica that you cannot get from staying in a hotel in town. We want your experience here t...o be the best possible and will do all that we can to make it happen! People who get the most out of staying here take the time to just relax in the hammocks, by the swimming pool, play darts, shoot pool or just read a book.
We've been to most of the hotels, hot springs, parks and done the activities you're looking at doing so we're happy to give you the best advice we can. We will arrange for you to go white water river rafting, canyoning (repelling down a waterfall), hiking around the volcano or whatever it is you're looking to do. We're here to be your personal concierge!
If you have any questions or need any advice, we're happy to help! We look forward to having you as our guests at The Villa Hermosa!Read more

Additional Location Information
We are located in the Costa Rican countryside in a rural area where the locals live. Daily there are people riding by on their horses, walking their cows down the road to go to another grazing area and our neighbor still uses his ox-cart! The guesthouse is in it's own oasis of tropical plants and has beautiful views of rolling hills and of Volcano Arenal. We don't have traditional addresses here (and we don't receive postal service) so if you have any questions about exactly where we are, please check out our website as there are directions, maps, videos and more: http://www.theVillaHermosa.com

Spoiled by this piece of paradise
Villa Hermosa left us feeling spoiled. My family, 2 adults and 2 boys stayed for 5 days there. We really lucked out choosing this place. From the first day I contacted Wendy, she was so wonderful. She had great information and was great at keeping in contact with me via emails. She helped us arrange car rental, tours, and tips on where to go that suited our family's interest. This was our first trip to Costa Rica so having a person, almost like our personal travel agent, was the best.
When we arrived at Villa Hermosa, this piece of paradise surpass our expectations. The pictures really represented the place and more. It was awesome to have a private pool for our boys, the gardens were beautiful to stroll through, the dining/kitchen/living space was a great place to lounge around and just relax listening to all the sounds of nature. Wendy thought of everything! I love that she provides all the basic essentials to cook a simple meal on the BBQ or burner. There was even coffee, milk, and sugar in the fridge with ice ready in the freezer when we arrived. When we were not out on an excursion, we enjoyed hanging out at the villa playing pool, fuzeball, dart, swimming, laying in the hammocks or just reading.
When we left and arrived at our next destination - all my boys could say was "can we go back to Wendy's place?"
Con: It's a little off the beaten path so expect a bit of a bumpy ride to get there. Also, although very lush and private, it is next to the road so a little noisy with cars and dirt bikes going by.

Serene relaxation away from it all.
We had a wonderful stay at this serene and beautiful B&B.; The property is extremely clean and well equipped with a uniquely comfortable and well protected outdoor living area. The Springs Hotel is only 5 minutes away to enjoy its lovely hot springs. Thank you Wendy for being a congenial and helpful host and for sharing your small piece of paradise with us. We recommend this property for independant, laid back travellers with a sense of adventure and hope to return again soon. Read more

Thank you guys! It was a pleasure to have you here & to get to know you. Come back soon!

All around awesome!
Villa Hermosa is a gorgeous property located about 15 minutes outside of the city center. The drive from La Fortuna takes about 15 minutes which offers a look at what this amazing place in Costa Rica has to offer. Once you arrive you are greeted by Wendy, the owner, who is extremely welcoming and accommodating. She recommended activities and locations to visit while we were in the area. This saved us so much time and allowed us to enjoy every second. Before we got there, she gave us information about driving in Costa Rica, navigating the airport, etc. (so helpful!!)
I would recommend renting a car if you plan on doing a lot of activities, but if you plan on lying around the property I'm sure there are other transportation options. The property is even better than even what we expected. My wife and I were kicking ourselves for not asking some friends to join us on the trip because there are plenty of amenities on the grounds to entertain 4 people. The private pool, outdoor dining and seating areas, kitchen, hammocks and garden were amazing. We found ourselves just wanting to hang in the hammocks listening to nature with a cocktail or coffee. It was so peaceful and calming!
One recommendation I would have for travelers is to go to The Springs (a nearby resort) for their natural hot springs experience. My wife and I spent our evenings there lounging around in their thermal springs and it is about a 5 minute drive from Villa Hermosa. For $50 each, we got a 2 day pass to use the tubs. We especially enjoyed visiting the animal Rescue Center that they have on grounds (complementary tour with the pass).
Overall - We couldn't have enjoyed our stay at the Villa Hermosa more. Wendy has done an amazing job at making this a one of a kind stay! The breakfasts were yummy, it was so nice waking up to fresh coffee daily was amazing, and staying here made our trip complete. Thank you for making our holiday so wonderful, Wendy!!!

Come back & bring your friends, we'll be waiting! :-)
Read more

A Private and Peaceful Sanctuary!
Our family had the most incredible stay at this beautiful bed and breakfast. The grounds were impeccably maintained and extremely private and peaceful. We loved the open air kitchen cooking to the musical sounds of the many tropical birds. We were greeted with warmth, kindness and personal service from our hosts-they made sure we had everything we needed and more. Thank you both so much! There was unbelievable attention to detail in this gorgeous sanctuary. We loved the private trails with brilliant flowers with a lovely private hammock area. We had a glass of wine by candlelight here on the full moon listening to the tropical jungle sounds. It was absolutely magical! The stunning waterfall that Wendy suggested was the highlight of my Christmas vacation. We swam in the waterfall pool, and watched blue butterflies in the mist. This place is a gem in beautiful Costa Rica. Read more

Villa Hermosa exceeded our expectations!
I began researching places to stay in Costa Rica for a girlfriends' retreat about 10 months before travelling. When I came upon Villa Hermosa, I was hooked. After I began email correspondence with owner Wendy Holt, I knew this was the right place for us. My only disappointment is that we didn't stay longer. Three nights was not long enough. Our stay at Villa Hermosa exceeded our expectations. Attention to little details made our stay quite special. Opening our bedroom door to be greeted by a tray of freshly brewed coffee, with three mugs, and a "good morning" note was a gift. Breakfasts were beautiful and excellent. While I know Wendy hosts many, many guests throughout the year, she made us feel very welcome, like girlfriends. We enjoyed time hanging out with Wendy, talking about life in Costa Rica and the States, and well, just life in general, over a glass of wine. The property of Villa Hermosa is breathtaking with an amazing diversity of plants and birds. Our only snafoo was a problem with the water for the shower, but Robert quickly repaired it while we were away for the day. He was a great host too, showing us his country and teaching us a thing or two about playing pool. I felt very safe in Wendy's neighborhood, venturing out for a run each morning by myself. My girlfriends and I purchased a two day pass to the Springs Resort and while I was at first reluctant to the idea of spending two afternoons lounging in the hot springs (as compared to being out exploring), we made some great memories there. The memory of relaxing in a hot spring in the middle of a Costa Rican downpour surrounded by jungle at dusk is one I'll remember for many years to come. If you stay at villa Hermosa, I am certain you won't be disappointed. Read more

amazing property, amazing service, amazing location & of course
Just returned from our first [definitely not our last] stay at The Villa Hermosa. Our trip was initially canceled because of a hurricane hitting NYC - Wendy [the owner] was sympathetic, accommodating & flexible in rescheduling our trip! She's a super friendly yet unobtrusive hostess!
The place is impeccably clean, layout & design well thought out & well equipped w blender, bowls, etc - everything you could need! The property has ample places to relax, poolside, or down the path at the hammock house meant to ensure a restful stay!
The breakfasts that were served were some of the best food we had during our stay in Costa Rica. Fresh fruit, baked goods, tasty coffee, delivered right to your own outdoor dining table!
The road to the Villa is definitely a rocky one - so be prepared. This is not unique to this property - as we drove all around the country during our stay and it can get bumpy out there.
A great music dock for your iPod or iPad - which came in handy. Ample books for relaxing in the outdoor living room. As a photographer I appreciated that she lent me her binoculars & bird id book for my stay. Speaking of birds - there are plenty of them to enjoy! The landscaping is such that you literally lay on the couch & hummingbirds buzz right on by. Red legged honey creepers galore while we were there.
If I sound overzealous - its because I absolutely loved our stay. We rent homes whenever we travel - from Paris to Barcelona to Cyprus - and this is one of our absolute favorite stays!
We left The Villa Hermosa to go to Guanacaste & stayed in a very high end resort there. While the resort was beautiful I would have opted, in retrospect to stay at The Villa Hermosa. Kudos to rental who over delivers on a promise.

You guys were fabulous, come back soon! :-) :-) :-)
The Villa Hermosa guesthouse is a relaxing and well appointed retreat near La Fortuna. My family and I stayed at the guesthouse for 5 nights in early august. The accommodations were perfect for my family of four. We spent our days exploring all that arenal has to offer and then we would return to the guesthouse for fun and relaxing afternoons and evenings. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and some fierce games of horseshoes, darts, and pool. Wendy served delicious breakfasts and booked our activities. We especially liked Danny Vega, the guide she reserved for our Hanging Bridges tour. The Villa Hermosa gardens are lovely and the outdoor living space is really inviting. The ten minute drive from the main road offers some truly spectacular views of the volcano on one side and the gorgeous valley on the other side. We loved our stay at Villa Hermosa guesthouse! Gentle Tropical Paradise
We loved the peaceful oasis that was Villa Hermosa. Wendy couldnt have been more helpful in giving us the low down on all things local and booking trips for us for no charge. Our 3 kids had a superb time and the stay even cured one of them of some developmental anxiety they were experiencing. There's Nothing like Nature! Read more

A hidden paradise in paradise
If you're looking at this page and reading this review, I envy you. It means you're that much closer to an unforgettable stay in a perfect little piece of paradise.
You can get a good idea of the property, facilities and the like from other reviews, but I definitely have to mention Wendy. She is an excellent host and her hospitality is a huge part of what makes this place so special.
You can certainly use Villa Hermosa as a home base for the many activities and excursions in the area (I would recommend renting a car), but do yourself a favor and plan at least one or two days to stay at the property. Sit by the pool, read in the hammocks (with a view of the volcano) or walk through the lush gardens and just marvel at where fortune has found you.
I consider myself very lucky to have found Villa Hermosa - and now you can too.
Quiet, Serene, Relaxing
Wendy and her three amigos (Mati, Moto and Lobo), made our stay at the Villa Hermosa unforgettable. Breakfast was cooked by Wendy, and was delicious and just the right amount. My family enjoyed the pool and pool table on the property. It was our home away from home! Wendy booked the tours which made the vacation less stressful for me and hooked us up with a wonderful driver ( Mario ). At the Villa Hermosa we were always entertained with birds, squirrels, lizards and many more animals at which I can not name. The room is also equipped with a safe, and I felt very comfortable in leaving my valuables there and not having to worry about a thing. The location of the Villa Hermosa was perfect for me, it was about 5 mins from The Springs Resort, yet surrounded by the locals and beautiful landscape of Costa Rica. Overall, the hospitality at the Villa Hermosa is one of a kind, and I hope to return again soon. Thanks Wendy!!
A slice of heaven above La Fortuna!
We stayed at Villa Hermosa for four nights - and each night it was blissful to retreat to Wendy Holt's home after a fun day of activities in the La Fortuna area. The rental is immaculately maintained, the surrounding property is beautifully landscaped, and Wendy was a wonderful host. Every morning, she provided sumptuous breakfasts, and her knowledge of La Fortuna, and Costa Rica in general, provided us with great insights to help us design our days.
The house is on a ridge above La Fortuna, beyond the Springs Resort, and getting to it is a bit of an effort, over rough roads - a 4x4 definitely comes in handy. But after we got used to the road the first day, it didn't feel like much of an effort, and this ridge road has beautiful views of the valleys on both sides.
And - "There will be Bugs" - you are in Central america, in the rainforest...there are bugs. The photographer in me loved it - I got great shots of all kinds of 6 and 8 legged-creatures, but my wife certainly had to steel herself (which she did, bravely) to deal with flying, crawling and creeping bugs. Of course, this is an issue anywhere you go in Costa Rica, not specific to Villa Hermosa.
So all in all, it was a wonderful experience, and we would stay there again if we find ourselves in the La Fortuna area in the future.
The vacation or our dreams!
Our stay at Villa Hermosa was fantastic. Wendy took care of our ever need. From arranging our transportation to booking the tours we wanted. She was so great to make sure we had arrangements each day and show us all the wildlife in the area. Could not have asked for a better host. The guest house and grounds are wonderful and very private. It was just what we needed to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to really live in the Costa Rican culture.
Authentic Rain Forest Experience!
Wendy and Villa Hermosa surpassed expectations. After having a last minute cancelled reservation at another property, we were rushed to find a place to stay. Everything happens for a reason, right?
We loved the fact that Villa Hermosa was out of town, and more in the true wilderness, which lends itself to a more authentic experience. We read up on many reviews about driving in CR, and driving to The Springs Resort, which is approx 10 min from Villa Hermosa. While the road is unpaved, we were never really nervous about driving, and we thought the "hassle"(if one can call it that) of traipsing out of town was well worth the quiet serenity that you find at Villa Hermosa. In addition to your own private outdoor space, a pool, a game room with pool table, we found Wendy's service and advice indispensable! As a CR resident for the last 4 years, she has a lot to offer.
We'd highly recommend this to anyone...and in fact, already have!

very nice place
nice house, nice view and very friendly host. A bit far from attractions (dirty road) but a quiet and well designed place . Dynamic and helpful hostess
Beautiful property in private location, Wendy is great!
The property is in excellent proximity to arenal volcano and just down the road from the Springs Resort & Spa. Wendy is amazing! She helped me plan a special anniversary dinner for my wife and connected us with a very knowledgeable guide to walk the arenal Hanging Bridges. Wendy also provided a hearty and delicious breakfast every morning and catered to our dietary restrictions. The guesthouse is quite large and could accommodate a small family of 4. The gardens are beautiful and there is a path to walk around the property and hammocks to kick back and relax. She also has books and board games in the guesthouse. Overall, very great service and very good place to connect with nature!
The guesthouse is beautiful. The grounds are gorgeous and the breakfasts were superb. Dave & Wendy were extremely helpful booking outings. The electronics in the gate were broken while we were there, which was a bit inconvenient, and the television in the guesthouse apparently broke the day before we arrived. While we weren't on vacation to watch television, later at night it would have been nice to have as an option. It's a bit rough getting to the guesthouse, so make sure you have four wheel drive. We were too hot and stifled without air conditioning in the bedroom (no cross-ventilation), but others might be comfortable enough with the fans. Read more

Villa Hermosa is a lovely peaceful guesthouse in the countryside outside of La Fortuna. The birds and wildlife are abundant and the gardens are truly beautiful! Dave & Wendy are excellent hosts willing to help make the Costa Rican experience the best for their guests. The hiking in the area is very enjoyable - follow it up with a visit to the hot springs nearby, and it's a perfect day! A Fantastic Place to Stay, I'd recommend it and would stay there
I stayed at the guesthouse in June of 2011 and Wendy and Dave are awesome hosts and Villa Hermosa is a great place to stay in Costa Rica. The pictures are representative of the Guesthouse and it is a magnificent place to stay. New and clean and spacious. There's a nice pool and gardens with animals that drop by. Their two dogs are nice to have around as well. They know the area very well and will guide you to all the activities you might be looking for as well as the local grocery store.
The breakfasts are very good. The location is outside of town, but it has a more relaxed, serene atmosphere as a result. As a person visiting, it's nice to have Wendy and Dave's perspective on things (CR in general, how to get around, activities, etc.).
All in all, a great stay. The location is good, the amenities are nice, and the friendliness of Wendy and Dave put it over the top!
Beautiful garden setting with views of arenal Volcano
Wendy and Dave have created a wonderful retreat in the hills outside of La Fortuna and within a 20 minute drive to town or to the Volcano or the lake. The outdoor living space is quite comfortable and bugs are not a problem, even without bug spray. The living quarters, with comfortable king and queen size beds, is large and the amenities first rate. Most striking is the garden setting! Wonderful plants surround the property and a variety of birds, including hummingbirds, "Mexican turkeys" and parakeets are fun to watch early in the morning or during evening cocktails.
Most importantly, both Dave and Wendy are remarkably gracious hosts and took great pains to insure our comfort during our stay. The coffee service every morning was a treat, as was the very well done breakfast! Reminded me more of a four-star hotel than a vrbo 'do it yourself' vacation!
Wendy and Dave, your hosts at Villa Hermosa, are attentive to your every need both before and after you arrive. We were celebrating 20 years together and could not have picked a more luxurious place to stay and enjoy the arenal area. Private pool, landscaped yard, excellent cooks, great local area info and beautiful accommodations made this the favourite place we stayed. The bedroom has a queen and king bed so if you are traveling with kids it is fantastic...remember private pool. The living room, dining room and bar are all outside so there is no need to be quiet when the kids go to bed. We saw more variety of reptiles and birds while staying here than anywhere else on our trip. Every need is thought of and your hosts will soon feel like your oldest friends. I wouldn't stay anywhere else and look forward to coming back with my kids. Oh did I mention the view...
Lovely arenal Volcano Guesthouse
Nicely appointed guesthouse with a view of the volcano beyond the private swimming pool. Friendly owners and great service in a rural setting. Thank You, -The Ryan Family-

Beautiful, relaxed retreat with very helpful and friendly hosts
Comfortable and relaxed guesthouse with wonderfully friendly and helpful hosts. Beautifully prepared and presented breakfasts. Great secluded garden and pool area. Wonderful for bird watching. Off the beaten track but worth it for the great views along the way (would suggest 4x4 vehicle required if self driving). We would thoroughly recommend Villa Hermosa for visitors to the arenal area of Costa Rica.

Paradise...wish we could have stayed longer!
We just returned home from our 8 day trip to Costa Rica, and our stay at Villa Hermosa was our favorite stop! Wendy and Dave are so hospitable, and made our family feel welcomed and comfortable. The guesthouse and grounds are amazing...even better than the pictures and descriptions portray. A highlight for our family was our trip to Proyecto asis with Wendy as our tour guide...we were able to see and interact with many endanged animals, and our boys loved it! We hope to return again soon and stay longer next time...it is definitely a little piece of paradise in a beautiful country! Thanks Wendy and Dave!
Wish we could have stayed longer!!!
From the beautiful garden, to the awesome guesthouse, we had an amazing time at Villa Hermosa!!! Whether your planning a relaxing day at the house (and around the property) or whether your planning a day excursion- Wendy and Dave at Villa Hermosa accomodate to the max, with an amazing breakfast served every morning - anytime you like. The house and property is amazing- from a gorgous garden (with hammocks), to the pool and the recreation room with a pool table - Villa Hermosa has it all.
Although it is a bit a drive from downtown La Fortuna(15 min, the location is fantastic especial for travels who want to see the real Costa Rican country side. We loved our stay at Villa Hermosa and would highly recommend it!
And when you do go be sure to go on the "Hanging Bridges Walk" with a guide, it's well worth your time and money!!!

Beautiful, Cozy, Friendly Experience
I'm happy to give the Villa Hermosa a 5 star review! We stayed 2 nights in March 2012. The guest house is beautiful, cozy and well equipped with everything you need. Also very spacious and clean with a comfy king size bed! The pool area is relaxing and the gardens are gorgeous! We were able to cook there, swim, play pool, relax, etc. One of my favorite parts was the hammock house - perfect place to read a book or take a nap :) Wendy & Dave were on time to pick us up, super helpful in planning activities for us or whatever else we needed... great hosts! Breakfasts were delicious. They have two dogs we also really enjoyed and there are all kinds of birds all over the property that are great to watch! We absolutely recommend this place!
Thanks for sharing your paradise with us - we loved it!
Beautiful, private and and very relaxing.
We loved our two nights at Villa Hermosa. My newlywed wife and I stayed there for our honeymoon after being married on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The property is stunning, we loved the outdoor kitchen/dining area/lounge area. The trails around the property and the entire atmosphere was very relaxing - just we needed.
An amazing experience
Our stay out the Villa Hermosa was an absolutely great experience. Wendy and Dave were easy to work with and extremely helpful in setting up our vacation. They booked our excursions for us and served us a delicious, home-cooked breakfast every morning. The villa itself is gorgeous, clean and spacious. There is a full kitchen and grill with a beautiful deck outside. The grounds and gardens are unbelievably beautiful with a great view of the arenal volcano. On our final morning there we woke up and came outside to watch 3 toucans eating plantains in the tree in front of our villa. There is also a great pool and patio as well as a game room that you have all to yourself. It is a truly unique and wonderful place to stay.
Wendy and Dave are the ultimate hosts. It begins with a wonderful breakfast and finishes with all of the wonderful recommendations that they make. Great accomodations and they bent over backwards to make sure we were comfortable in every way.
Beautiful, relaxing, and treated so well!
We loved our stay with Wendi and Dave. They really have thought of everything there! In addition to a marvelous place to relax, they are so knowledgeable and helpful with activities and options around there. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast!!
A bit of paradise in La Fortuna
Wendy and Dave have created a lovely retreat for their visitors. Alongside their own house they have built a single room home with a covered outdoor living space that includes a kitchen , bar, couches and chairs and tables, where we spent all out time watching the hummingbirds zoom around. There is a pool area and lovely paths through Wendy's amazing gardens. The included breakfast was excellent and varied. Wendy and Dave went out of their way to be helpful. Although initially it seemsd like quite a treck to get there( 10 ks over an unpaved road) after a few days it seemed like nothing as you are really with in 1/2 hour of most of the areas attractions. I cannot wait to go back!

Incredible Hospitality in a Beautiful Place
We visited the Villa Hermosa in September, 2011. We had an incredible time. Our hosts were more than hosts, they are considered friends. They provided us with everything we needed. The view is amazing, the guest house is perfect, and the location was central to everywhere we needed and wanted to go. They willingly provide you with all the information that you need and will help guide you along the way. Waking up to a beautiful morning with chirping birds and a view of the arenal Volcano is unbeatable. Wendy can tell you all about the types of wildlife and birds surrounding the area. They keep the grounds in impecible shape. They even put the TV outside on the patio so we could watch the Cowboys vs Redskins game comfortable from the outside seating area. Just say yes and book your trip. You will not regret it. You will enjoy your stay, your hosts, and even get some puppy love while you are there. We traveled with 3 girls on a "girlcation" and felt safe where we were and were able to see outside of the tourist areas and how the Ticans live and play. Costa Rica is amazing and these hosts made it all the better. I can't brag enough.
Redondo Beach, CA
For us, Villa Hermosa was absolutely perfect. It was truly our own personal villa. We loved the outdoor living room/dining room/kitchen (decorated to perfection) and the large american-style King-sized bed. Huge shower! And the pool of course! The surroundings were just so beautiful, I would flop down with my book after a day of volcanoes and zipling and not even read, just watch the birds and the stunning foliage and wait for our lovely afternnon rainstorm! If you are going to spend your time like us, meaning active during the day, but wanting the option of cooking for yourselves at night (we loved going to the local grocery store, picking up chicken and tortillas and barbequeing at "home") then this is the perfect place. Nothing to stop you from going out to eat, either. (But it's hard to beat making a vodka and tonic with fresh limes you just pick from the tree right outside your living room!) The drive into "town" feels long at first, but once you do it a few times, it's a quick 20 minutes at the most. There's a small store a 5 minute walk away, too, which is fun to do because you'll meet some neighbors along the way. And 10 mintues away is the best hot springs resort, we went twice, just down the road and amazing. Wendy and Dave were the best hosts (they even did a load of laundry for us, I am not kidding!) and know the area so you can get all the info you need on the area from them any time you want.
I would definitely recommend a car, although it's not absolutely necessary. And do make sure you try to arrive in daylight - once you are there it's easy, but even your GPS might get lost at night the first time.
I'd go back again in a heartbeat.
My husband and I spent the first few nights of our honeymoon at the Villa Hermosa and loved it! Wendy and Dave are the ultimate hosts, giving recommendations on things to do (check out the La Fortuna Waterfall) and places to eat (we liked the Lava Lounge). The breakfast Wendy makes is divine and it's so relaxing to be served on the patio. The gardens are beautiful and it's fun to spot all the birds stopping by. Awesome view of the volcano. Overall, wonderful place to stay and I would highly recommend.
I found my dream vacation spot
I am almost reluctant to write how much I loved my stay at Villa Hermosa out of fear other people will learn about it and I'll have a hard time finding it available again. However, it was such a wonderful experience I have to share. What made it so perfect ere the personal touches of the hosts, Wendy and Dave. They made sure the experience was just what I needed, from the delicious breakfasts served at my leisure to the detailed advice about where to explore. They also seemed to intuitively sense the amount of privacy versus socializing I sought. And then there is the beautiful views of the volcano and the private pool. Who could ask for more? I have already recommended this rental to all my friends and I look forward to returning again.

Beauty and Comfort
We stayed at Villa Hermosa for 2 weeks. This was by far our favourite accommodation from our travels. This property is extemely beautiful with all the lush plants and abundant bird life. It was peaceful and we especially enjoyed watching the birds feeding every morning while having our coffee. The bedroom and bathroom are large, new, and perfect for a comfortable stay. Our favourite part of the rental was the incredible outdoor living area - we spent many hours lounging under the covered patio, enjoying our visits from the wildlife and the resident dogs (Mati and Moto). We fell in love with this place. Dave and Wendy are fantastic hosts and they couldn't have been more helpful. We also really enjoyed having our own private pool - how great is that! We highly recommend staying at Villa Hermosa.
What a find!
Dave & Wendy have created a beautiful spot for visitors to the La Fortuna area. We had our own wonderful oasis after days full of adventure. The outdoor living room and kitchen/dining room were wonderful spots to enjoy a homemade breakfast compliments of Wendy and to wind down the day with a cocktail. The bedroom and bathroom were beautifully decorated and roomy. The pool is spectacular and everything you could possible think of is provided for. My boys kept busy with the pool, horseshoes, darts and pool table. The only negative would be that the villa is a 15 minute ride up the mountain. But if you plan your day right, you will only need to make the trip one time a day. We found it well worth the drive to stay here. If you are going to visit the La Fortuna area, don't miss out on this lovely gem of a place. Pura Vida!

Wonderful vacation rental in La Fortuna
My husband and I always stay in vacation rentals while traveling, and this was by far the best experience we have had. Not only were Wendy and Dave great hosts, but the villa and the property are just beautiful! We enjoyed the pool and outdoor sitting area. The breakfast was delicious and a great way to start the day in the morning. Like most vacation rentals, we felt removed from the touristy hotels and crowds. It was so peaceful and the drive to the villa is beautiful. We enjoyed the town of Monterrey nearby. Wendy and Dave answered all questions, gave us maps, and helpful tips. It was nice talking to them about their Costa Rica experiences. We hope to be back soon!
A great place just off the beaten path in La Fortuna
Our family had a relaxing time for three days at the Villa Hermosa. The Villa Hermosa is in the beautiful countryside on a gravel road (rough but accessible with a car) about 5 miles off the main road. It's really peaceful since you're the only ones at the villa. The only traffic on the road is usually in the mornings and evenings when people are going to and from work (and this is only a few cars). The pool area, garden walking path, and game room give you plenty to do. Walking up and down the road by the villa is also very nice.
The outdoor dining, kitchen, and living area at the villa were great places to enjoy the beautiful weather we had (no bugs, no rain, sunny to partly sunny). The pool area with the surrounding garden is a great place to relax with the volcano in the background. We were even fortunate to see the entire volcano several times during our stay though no volcanic activity was going on.
Wendy was very helpful in answering questions about the area and providing suggestions on what to do. We didn't get a chance to meet Wendy/Dave since they were on vacation, but Robert and Marta were excellent hosts. They only spoke Spanish but this didn't pose any difficulties and provided our children a chance to practice their Spanish. The breakfasts were tasty and portions were generous.
Staying at the Villa Hermosa is a great way to enjoy the quiet beauty of the Costa Rican countryside. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the time we were at the Villa.
Villa Hermosa is a private paradise!!! Wendy and Dave have built a stunning guesthouse, down to every last detail. The accommodations are spacious and gorgeous, with an open air kitchen/lounge/dining area, and the pool area is like something out of a luxury travel magazine! And to top it all off, Wendy and Dave themselves are two of the most hospitable people I've ever met. They made delicious breakfasts, gave us great recommendations of things to do in the area, and even drove us around for fees less than what we would have to pay for a taxi (we didn't rent a car). We would go back in a second!
This is a one of a kind, open air villa, just outside of La Fortuna and nearby all the attractons of Volcan arenal and hot springs. The property was beautifully maintained with tropical plants, comfortable furniture, lovely pool and a fine master suite. The owners made us feel so welcome and were willing to help in any way needed; their door was always open and the morning coffee delivered was fantastic!
My husband and I would definitely stay there again.
New York City
Villa Hermosa is a wonderful place to stay - peaceful, spectacular gardens, beautiful home. Wendy & Dave are terrific hosts. They were very welcoming and extremely helpful to us.
One acre of Paradise for 3 days!
We stayed at Villa Hermosa for three nights. Myself, my wife and our two kids 4 and 6. We had an amazing time. Wendy and Dave treated us like friends and like guests at a 5 star hotel at the same time! We had private access to the pool by the guest house, a kitchen, lots of room for the kids to play and access to a little piece of perfectly manicured paradise with a view of the Volcano. The pictures they have on their website seem unbelievably beautiful, the truth is, they do the place no justice. It is so much more beautiful than any picture can show.
Dollar for dollar, this is the best place I have ever stayed at... and I travel for a living.
We just wish we could have stayed longer!! First of all - Wendy went above and beyond and helped us plan all of our excursions before we even got there. She answered all of our questions and gave us great advice. That alone made for a great stay. When we got to the property, we were so excited to see an outdoor living room area...we never got to take advantage of it, because it rained the whole time, but we would have loved to! The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. They even had rain coats that came in very handy on the hiking we did in the rain. Even though we had to drive a bit outside of town to get there, it was worth it...it really felt like a getaway...
Great tucked away escape!
We were only able to stay 1 night at Villa Hermosa, but we were very impressed with the accomodations. The owners have done a beautiful job creating a wonderful escape. The grounds are beautifully manicured. The outdoor area is great for relaxing during the day or night.
The owners were so friendly and helpful. Wendy always replied quickly to email questions I sent her and when we arrived she continued to assist using her wealth of knowledge.
We could tell that the owners who are newer to Costa Rica are so happy with their choice to move and are excited to share their knowledge and experiences with you to ensure you have a memorable stay.

Attention to every detail!!
We chose Villa Hermosa after months of searching for the perfect location to spend Christmas with our children. We wanted an authentic Costa Rican experience...we are not the all-inclusive resort type. Wendy was our go to person from the day we decided upon staying with her. She helped us plan our entire stay in La Fortuna, with many, many detailed emails and helpful tips. We came to regard Wendy as a friend, and so looked forward to staying at her Villa, which we knew would feel like our home. We were the first guests to stay at the Villa without Wendy or Dave present at their home, which is adjecent to the Villa. Wendy went out of her way to make sure every detail was attended to in her absence...and we had the wonderful opportunity to have Robert, a Tico and neighbor, to take care of things while the hosts were away. Robert shared some of his culture with us, delivered tamales and some other local treats on Christmas Day, and joined us for a game of pool when we invited him. We absolutely loved the dogs, Moto and Mati, and enjoyed walking them down the lane in the morning with the volcano as a backdrop. The vegetation on the property is amazing, and the pool is beautiful!! We enjoyed walking amongst the gardens at night looking for frogs and listening as the night creatures awoke.
The Villa is down a long and fairly rough road, which we had not really expected, but soon came to realize that all the roads in CR are very similiar, and it made the location all the more interesting and special. The bedroom and bathroom were extremely clean and comfortable, with everything we needed, even raincoats and boots. The rest of the villa is outdoors. We wondered if it would be buggy or muggy having the living room, dining room and kitchen outdoors, but it was indeed perfect and so amazing. This was a Christmas we will never forget and we cannot say enough about Wendy and Dave and their fabulous Villa Hermosa.

Beautiful location, wonderful hosts
Villa Hermosa is a beautiful spot - the guest house is spacious and very comfortable. The patio is lovely, and it was a joy to see all the birds on the bananas that Wendy and Dave hang right outside the patio - we saw more types of birds at such a close range than in all of our hikes through the rainforest and cloudforest (including 3 kinds of toucans!). Wendy was extremely helpful with all of our needs, including arranging transportation during all segments of the trip, and suggesting activities that she knew we would enjoy. The breakfasts were excellent, and we ate dinner there two nights, which was a great option after busy days hiking. We would absolutely recommend Villa Hermosa as a wonderful place to stay in La Fortuna!
My wife and I stayed in Wendy and David's guest house for 4 nights while visiting La Fortuna and arenal. It was perfect. The house is located a few miles outside of the city in a very peaceful location. They have done an amazing amount of work on the grounds. It was like a birdwatching tour just to step outside in the morning. They had hung a bunch of plantains in the tree and we saw Toucans, Orioles, and a bunch of others Ive never seen before. The house is ultra comfy...huge bedroom and bathroom with an awesome outdoor dining/kitchen/bar area. We spent a lot of time just chilling there (it rained a couple of the days we were there). Brand new pool and great view of the volcano. Wendy and Dave couldn't have been more awesome. Fresh delicious (included) breakfast every morning. They set up tours for us (the rappelling down the waterfalls was fantastic). Knew the local area and do's and dont's. Obviously we enjoyed our stay. Nothing negative to say. Check it out.
Fantastic Guest House
Myself and three of my friends chose to stay at the Villa Hermosa our first 3 days of our 10 day girlfriend/birthday celebration adventure in Costa Rica. Dave and Wendy were our hosts and we had an awesome time! The garden grounds were beautiful with a path that wandered amongst the various plants/trees and flowers. There was a lovely newly contrstructed pool for our private use. The guest house itself was very comfortable, exceptionally clean and acommodated us very well In addition to the plants various fruits were hung or placed to attract a wide array of Costa Rican birds. Definitely pay the extra charge and enjoy the breakfasts offered in the mornings, they are delicious, served on the open veranda and presented to make you feel pampered. Dave and Wendy love Costa Rica and it definitely shows in their helpfulness in answering questions, booking tours etc. If you have any doubts (as we did) about driving in Costa Rica, definitely rent a car, you will be glad you did. Arenal and the surrounding area is beautiful but a vehicle is needed. We recommend a SUV vs. using a private driver, shuttle etc.
Quiet, relaxing in paradise
Our teenagers loved this place, and of course my wife and I as well. The grounds are beautiful, lots of plants, beautiful pool, and in a scenic neighborhood with a nice view of the volcano from the backyard. Delicious breakfast and happy hour everyday. The guest house is very nicely appointed and kept clean. The owners are super nice and helpful. If suggestions are needed for activities the owners can provide. We had a great time on a couple of their suggestions.
The Villa Hermosa was a wonderful place to stay. Wendy and Dave are very accommodating. The view is spectacular and we could hear the rumblings of the volcano while sitting in the outdoor living area. Our hosts even created a "game night" environment by putting the TV outside in the outdoor living area so that we wouldn't miss our beloved american Football! I will definitely be recommending The Villa Hermosa to anyone visiting the arenal area in Costa Rica.
Hermosa Beach, CA
Great place to stay! The owners are kind and accommodating, and have mastered the art of being available, informative and friendly with the giving of space so that their guests can enjoy their solitude yet also have access to friendly and informative conversation, and anything else they may need. The guest house is perfect - comfortable bed, clean, great roomy bathroom. The grounds are beautiful - so many plants, birds, butterflies - and the pool is lovely. Highly recommend!
Not one detail was overlooked -- including the volcano!
Wendy and Dave couldnt have been more accomodating. Their attention to detail and desire to make us as comfortable as possible was fantastic. Their guest house is spacious with the biggest shower I have ever seen! It even has a private swimming pool and fully appointed bar and bbq. Wendy's breakfasts were creative and delicious. The gardens are lovely but best of all is the view of the volcano from their backyard. Absolutely breathtaking!

piece of heaven!
wow!! my husband and i traveled to costa rica on our honeymoon. we were so impressed with our stay at the villa hermosa! wendy and dave went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable and taken care of. homemade breakfast and delicious coffee in the morning, happy hour with snacks. they gave us suggestions of places to visit, recommended restaurants to eat, and assisted us with reservations at one of the local hot spring resorts. moto and mati, two wonderful dogs came to visit us a lot and relaxed with us on the outside patio. we wish that we would have known how great this place was so we could have stayed longer!
in our attempt at packing to leave, my husband left his shoes underneath the bed. without hesitation, wendy and dave mailed the shoes to us in the united states.
we love this place. we would definitely come back again!
Villa Hermosa is Spectacular in Every Way
Wendy and Dave have created an exceptionally warm, inviting environment in this beautiful setting! Our stay at Villa Hermosa was outstanding! Our surroundings were gorgeous, the accommodations were wonderful, and our hosts were gracious and thoughtful! Wendy and Dave made us feel totally at home- they even made activity reservations for us, and tailored their wonderful breakfasts to fit our tastes. Villa Hermosa was even better than expected! We loved our time here!
Wonderful place to stay...home away from home!
Villa Hermosa was the perfect place to stay during our trip to arenal. Perfectly decorated, impeccably maintained. It even has its own pool. The guesthouse is private, however if you need anything, your hosts are just steps away. Wendy went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed...and was so helpful in letting us know where to go and what to do. (your hosts are from the us!) The Villa Hermosa is a beautiful place to just relax as well and watch the wildlife and birds. We heard the volcano grumbling many times as well! This is really a beautiful place to stay. We'll Definitely be back!
Relaxing paridise after a full day of travel
I stayed over night at Villa Hermosa during my last trip to Costa Rica. My trip had me heading toward north for business and I arrived in San Jose late afternoon. I didn't want to spend the night in the city, so a day in the arenal area seemed like a good choice to rid the jet lag.
When I got to Villa Hermosa, the hosts - Dave & Wendy, met me to help bring my bags to the guest house. Pretty darn nice guest house: huge bed, shower, nice ceiling fan and television. There's a very large covered outdoor seating/entertaining area w/bar and a bbq. I ate dinner before arriving, but it's great to have the BBQ & small fridge to store some food for grilling.
Dave whipped up a welcome margarita for me and I was able to help myself to the well stocked bar which is self-serve on the honor system.
The grounds are beautiful with humming birds and fruit trees. At night, the frogs sing which adds to the cool tropical atmosphere as you sit outside with your drinks.
In the morning, Wendy made me a huge breakfast. Some of the best potatoes I've ever had. The view as you eat your meal is amazing, you're outside, surrounded by trees and nature and you have your own private view of the volcano arenal! There was smoke coming out from to top, but no lava. They say that you can see the lave sparks sometimes at night, which sounds awesome.
I am looking forward to my next trip to Costa Rica and will put Villa Hermosa on my must stay list, especially since the outdoor swimming pool will be finished. It can't get much better than sitting my own pool with a drink and a volcano window seat.
Thanks for being such great hosts.

Quiet, Secluded, Off the Beaten Path near La Fortuna
I stayed at Villa Hermosa for a few nights on my recent trip to Costa Rica. Villa Hermosa is a B&B run by Wendy and Dave, a couple originally from Southern California. It is a spacious guesthouse which consists of a large room with a king size bed, chairs and a full bath. Big screen television with satellite. Ceiling fan and other fans are provided. No Air Conditioning but I didn’t need it with the fans circulating the air. Outside is a living area with sofas, chairs, dining table, grill, sink, and mini refrig. Wendy and Dave live in the house also on the property. A swimming pool was being built while I was there, which will be nice to cool off from the humidity.
The location is in Alto Monterrey, about 20 minutes from La Fortuna, off of a gravel road. You are experiencing Costa Rica as what day to day living is. There are neighbors’ houses close by and surrounded by fields and cows and forest. It is very quiet, especially in the evening as you sit out on the patio and listen to the gentle cows mooing in the background or a rooster crowing in the distance. Around 6:30 am when all of the ticos go to work, the cars on the gravel are kind of noisy as you’re sleeping in, but they pass. Since you’re removed from towns, it is very dark at night and makes for excellent star gazing.
Meals can be prepared for you by Wendy and Dave, or there are other restaurants in a close driving distance.
The property has views of Arenal Volcano if it’s clear out. It is not on the lava side, though. Maybe a half hour drive to Arenal Park and the Hanging Bridges, hot springs and La Fortuna airport. Distance-wise nothing is too far, you just need to mind the windy roads.
If you want to experience Costa Rica, off the beaten path, and get away from the tourists and hotels but still be close to seeing some of the sights in the area, then Villa Hermosa is for you.

Charming, Relaxing and Clean!
This was our first time in Costa Rica and we loved
staying at Villa Hermosa. Wendy and Dave did
anything and everything we needed to make our trip
more pleasurable. They were very knowledgeable
about the area and provided an abundance of useful
maps and books about Costa Rica. La Villa Hermosa
is just minutes away from the Arenal Volcano and
the Hot Springs, which we highly recommend
visiting. The guesthouse is charming and clean and
the patio is relaxing. An excellent breakfast was
provided promptly each morning and the coffee was
DELICIOUS. I would definitely recommend staying at
the Villa Hermosa to anyone! We hope to return

Great B&B in North-Central Costa Rica
Villa Hermosa, while maybe not technically a B&B, has the vibe of one. The property has only one guest house and the owners live right next door.
The place is out in the country for a great "local" feel. It's surrounded by farmland instead of other hotels, so it is great for those who like to go off the beaten path. It's not too far to the Fortuna/Arenal area though (20-30 minutes maybe?), which has a lot of eco-tourism stuff. You can see the Arenal volcano from the back yard. The property is also very good for bird-watching.
The guest house is quite large and has its own big porch/patio and bar/fridge. The guest house was clean and seemed new. The food is good--breakfast is included. Lunch/dinner is extra, I believe. There is also a free happy hour!
The owners (Wendy and ???) are U.S. transplants and are very nice. They know the area well--I got good discounts on some things through them. They have a list of local activities and they know a lot of the other owners. Wendy speaks Spanish.
If you want a big resort type place, this is not for you. If you want something away from the touristy places (but close enough to go do touristy things in Arenal/Fortuna), then you will love this place. Highly recommended.
