Full of houses and buildings that date back to between the 15th and 18th centuries, La Rochelle is great for sightseeing as well as shopping and eating. The Vieux Porte is a very popular part of town because it's where you can watch the boats as you enjoy a meal or browse through shops. Speaking of shops, the main shopping street is the Rue du Palais, which has many interesting boutiques. La Rochelle also has wine bars, brasseries, museums, a theater, cinema, and several annual festivals which include Les Francofolies, a French music festival held in mid July, and a film festival held at the end of June and beginning of July. La Rochelle is not place where you need a car as bikes are the best way to get around. A train station can easily and conveniently take you to other parts of the region.
