Description from the owner
One of three huge apartments in our historic house; the Balcony Gite is an ideal year round base to enjoy fabulous Lagrasse with its artists, restaurants and cobbled streets.
This 2 bedroom apartment has been incorporated into what were the medieval ramparts of the village & its prime position on the river gives you the feeling of being in the countryside, with the sound of the river to lull you to sleep at night and yet the front of the house opens into the heart of the village & 13th century covered market.
There are two large beautiful bedrooms both with en-suite, one with French windows opening onto the balcony & overlooking...Read more

Additional Location Information
There are 5 excellent restaurants, a bakery with delicious cakes, a cafe/bar, shops, a busy delicatessen with ready prepared meal, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, doctors, chemist, garage and many 'caves' selling their own excellent wine. The 13th century market place (on our doorstep) has a market on Saturday mornings selling organic local produce. There are two shops and several wine producers and if all you want to do is relax in Lagrasse there is no need for a car.
The vineyards and olive groves of the river valley are an inspiration for artists; and for those wanting more than an amble, the wild hills with their limestone crags, umbrella pines and cypress trees are on the doorstep. In the winter months there are breathtaking views to the snow capped Pyrenees.
Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune and the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors. The tennis court, football and boules pitch are open to all and we are happy to lend you racquets and balls. The area is great for walking and mountain biking, river swimming and horse riding, all of which you can do from the doorstep.

Our stay at Lagrasse was a wonderfully relaxing experience. The gite was very comfortable and well appointed and situated in one of the prettiest spots in the village. We were made to feel very welcome by Kate, Roger and family (not forgetting Poppy the dog) and we look forward to seeing them again. We had planned to explore more of the surrounding area, but Lagrasse provided such a peaceful and beautiful haven that we found most days we were happy just to explore all it has to offer.

Please accept the following comments regarding our stay at the Riverside gite:
We had such a wonderful and magical time staying at the Riverside gite. We were bowled over at how spacious this apartment is. Very tall ceilings and wonderfully elegant & comfortable at the same time. Our initial response was "Wow, the photos don't do the flat justice!" Lagrasse is small and quiet, serene and beautiful; great for walks and engaging the fantasy of living there forever. Well located for our daily jaunts - whether to the mountains, beach, castles, market towns, the Midi canal, on and on, we packed many lovely memories into our time at Riverside. Kate and Roger, great hosts, have amassed a lot of information regarding surrounding things to do and see. Every day was a treasure. September-October, 2010. -

We enjoyed a relaxing week in the Riverside Gite. Lagrasse is a very charming village surrounded by beautiful scenery and wineries. It's small but has some very good restaurants and lots of history to keep you busy.
The apartment was very comfortable and has a gorgeous view of the river below. We cooked most of our meals there and found the kitchen to be well stocked. Having wifi in the apartment was a big help in planning day trips to neighbouring villages.
We would definitely stay here again! -

Dear Kate and Roger
Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday. We felt so relaxed and at home that we didn't even venture out of Lagrasse for the last three days. We had everything we needed in the gite and our little girl was happy running around. We have never felt so relaxed!
We loved staying in The Balcony Gite which is beautifully decorated and the bed was as comfy as ours at home with beautiful soft Egyptian cotton sheets.
We have totally fallen in love with the region, in particular the wine and cuisine! We will return to the UK fatter but happier. One of the best holidays ever!

We found the website by chance. It looked idyllic and was in every way! It took our breath away. It is everything that it claims to be and we loved it for it's peace and tranquility at the heart of a renowned ancient village steeped in history. We have booked to go again this august to further explore the local historic castles and dramatic countryside. Even in peak season the whole area is quiet and free from 'the crowds'. We loved it as a family, The river is great for children and Kate made every effort to make us feel welcome. Local shops (patisseries etc), cafes, restaurants provided a good service and choice on the doorstep. We loved Poppy the dog too!

We found this gite on alistair Sawday's site and decided to give it a go. We booked 2 weeks in the Balcony Gite and enjoyed every minute of it. Roger and Kate couldn't be more helpful but the bonus for us was taking their dog Poppy on numerous walks in the surrounding countryside. The Balcony Gite is spacious with a well stocked kitchen and the facility to sit out and enjoy the view of the river (glass of local wine optional)!
Very relaxed atmosphere. We've booked to return in June 2011.
