Additional Location Information
Mesachie Lake is a very small village located between Honeymoon Bay and the town of Lake Cowichan. It was created as a mill community to house the workers until the lumber mill closed in 1968. The village features a local park, boat launch, baseball diamond, part-time post office and community hall. There’s a bus stop at the end of Forestry Road, however, the rural municipal bus service is limiting, so we recommend renting a vehicle or bringing your own. There is parking on the rental property.
There are three lakes within walking distance of the rental property: Mesachie Lake, Bear Lake and Cowichan Lake. Cowichan Lake is the second largest fresh water lake on Vancouver Island and is about 30km long. The area is a major outdoor recreational hub. It’s a gateway to some of the best hiking, camping, biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, golfing and fishing on the Island.
Bear Lake is a small lake that connects to Cowichan Lake by a chanel. Partial views of Bear Lake can be seen from the rental property, which is located across the street. The back of the rental property features a protected forestry reserve, which is home to many old growth trees and secluded walking trails that lead you to Cowichan Lake and Mesachie Mountain.
The nearby town of Lake Cowichan (under 10 minute drive) is the largest of several small lakeside communities in the area, which are Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon Bay and Youbou. The communities are well known for their year-round events. Lake Cowichan has all of the amenities a small town could possibly provide. There are gas stations, grocery stores, a marina and more. In the town, you can access the famous Trans Canada Trail, which follows the Cowichan River into Duncan, or you can float down the Cowichan River in a tube, which is a popular activity among the summer vacationers.
For the not so outdoorsy types, Mesachie Lake House Retreat is the perfect private and quiet retreat to read a new book, watch movies or socialize around the fire pit. There’s also high-speed Internet access in the home, so you don’t have to miss a beat if you need to stay connected to the outside world.
The Cowichan Valley is very well known for its recreation, eco-tourism, agri-tourism, and culinary and wine tours.
The Cowichan region is located in Canada's only Maritime Mediterranean climatic zone, resulting in the warmest mean year round temperature anywhere in Canada. The Cowichan Lake area climate varies widely from season to season. Being within a maritime climatic zone, the area usually experiences warm, dry summers and mild wet winters.
There are two distinct topographical regions in the Cowichan Lake area, the mountainous areas and the lowland valleys. The area is in the heart of the Insular Mountains, Vancouver Island's main mountain range. The average height of most mountains is between 900 and 1200 meters.
