Been to Lamu several times but got to say the Island is the only place you can feel yourself and Subira house is the description of the Island, a total hoilday and the owners cannot be described by words all you need is to meet them and they will take care of the rest. being from Lamu and decided to stay at Subira and not with my family home... that tells you everything you need to know about Subira.

Bardowick, GermanyDer perfekte ausgangspunkt um das wahre Leben Lamus zu erkunden
Left on 03/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Very central. We were very well looked after by Edward, the housekeeper.
It would have been nice to have met Halima , the owner too though, She had gone away.
Very comfortable bed indeed. Pleasant little terrace to relax on.
Nice & quiet.
Found the cold shower a bit of a challenge despite the weather being just about perfect. -

Subira is not the guest house you could easily imagine.
I had sought several honeymoon options months before my wedding day in september and a week to the wedding all option offered by the travel agents were out of my pocket's reach. I was facing the challenge of the year..To tell my wife that we were no going anywhere for honeymoon.
One night i decided to spend time in the internet and made a few inquiries available through Tripadvisor portal and the owner was very prompt. I had other offers. But they did not sale.So I booked Subira. I had never been to Lamu and I was worried too about the recent terrorist activities hitting the coast and Lamu but my wife agreed that we can take the a big leap of faith and go!
Halima was so kind to arrange for her house help to pick us up from mainland we had no problem settling down now that we had a house fully serviced to ourselves with a wonderful view of the "mangrooved" islands. She new it was a honeymoon and she had our room set for the right mood as a suprise package. The Guy is a great cook and very social. He arranged local tourguide at a very afordable rate and we took an elaborate tour of the main Island on our second day. soon we were on our our and what a holiday.
We could not believe how a fast the days flew and the temptation to extend was very high thank God we had traveled on a fixed budget.
I will obviously go back there some time to relieve those great moments.
The highlight is...picture yourself having as much fun as the international tourists the go back "home" in the evening to a sumptuous dinner and all you had to do is say your preference...when you are not sure what you want to eat
Look out for some photo gallery soon...

I felt that I had established a close relationship with Judy before meeting her as our 32 e mails attested to. My group kept growing and growing and Judy undertook to find accomodation in neighbouring houses for my friends and we all felt at home in each others establishments. It was like nipping in next door to visit the cousins.Accomodation was lovely. My niece and I took the penthouse suite and shared the big bed. We could have accomodated another 2 or 3 in the bed and not have known they were there.
One member of the party was very sick while we were there and Judy and Edward could not have been more attentive and concerned.
Minor suggestions a few cushions on the balancony chairs would have been nice and we could have done with more than one key between the 4 of us as we were coming and going at different times.
Location was perfect. Getting lost was no problem. Locals always helpful and will to take us in tow.
My niece lost her camera one night in the pub. She went back and it had been kept safely for her. I lost my hat on the last night and retraced my steps next morning and found it kept safely in a little coffee shop. These are the king of messages that Lamu needs to be getting out there
We loved Lamu , the people who were so welcoming and we didnt hear the term 'Mzungu' once. Food was lovely and the sunset cruise which I believe has been cancelled. We are very sorry about the plight of Lamu tourism due to piracy and we certainly will be singing the praises of the whole experience. It is a real chill out zone and I would like to encourage people not to rubbish Lamu as a holiday destination. It is special. -

This place is just excellent. To begin with, Judy is a great host. She came to meet us at the airport and arranged our transfer to Subira. The place is very clean and the cost of staying there very reasonable. The view from the penthouse is amazing. My stay in Lamu remains one of the most memorable.

Eduard and Judy felt us like being home. This house is great, we were in the upper penthouse, with the indic breeze and great views of the town. Although there are certain things to impove (no table next to bed, only one light) this room is absolutely amazing. If you want to experience being in an authentic swahili house, that's your place.

Left on 03/15/2011 for a stay in March 2011
for a regular Kenya traveller like me, even i had to learn a few things in world famous sweet exotic Lamu, super efforts by Judy & Edward made our stay one of the best holidays ever, Judy welcomed us at Manda airport and made our arrival a fun journey to Subira house, On arrival at the Lamu Jetty was introduced to a wonderful person who was going to make our holiday one of the best ever, we had the pleasure of Edward who made our journey fun all the way to Subira penthouse, Ed arranged super breakfast, shopping trips, live football tickets, best boat trips, and guided us around Lamu and got us best possible rates for boats to shela and manda etc etc, Lamu town is just great, you get used to narrow roads and donkeys, Lamu people are so good and there are plenty restaurants at the water front for all budgets, Lamu is so popular with fresh fruit juices and food is so delicious, and shela beach is just super, especially around shela castle its a lovers paradise so enjoy in your birthday suits, Asanta Subira Team & Hongera here we come again soon...

My husband and I booked 4 nights at this lovely penthouse room overlooking Old Lamu town. The room on the top floor was large, breezy and in the traditional swahili style, with a airy verandah and thatched roof. Judy and Edward made us breakfast and were very kind and helpful. In fact, we stayed 5 extra days here. Highly recommended!
