Kampala, UgandaStone Town comes alive
Left on 12/31/2012 for a stay in December 2012
The apendalo House is located just off the bustling heart of Lamu's Stone Town. If you are looking for easy access to the towns culture, this is the place. The house itself is a beautiful four story, Swahili style building. It is very open and airy, with great winds to cool down even the hottest of days. Additionally, Katana - your liaison for your stay - can set you up with everything, from dhow rides to specially made morning fruit juices. We would also recommend going with a hired chef. If you have a large group, this is easier, cheaper and nicer than eating out.
However, take note not to confuse this part of Lamu with Shela, which is where many tourists go for beach lounging and complete tranquility. Lamu's Stone Town is a living place, which means donkeys braying and regular call to prayers from the many nearby mosques. For us, this added to the charm. And while the apendalo House is only about 30 meters from the beach, this is not a place where you can swim but instead enjoy watching the dhows being loaded and unloaded as they have for centuries.Response from Herbert - 12/31/2012

Kampala, UgandaGreat time
Left on 11/12/2012 for a stay in November 2012
The service provided by the onsite caretaker, Katana, was amazing. He made the entire experience what it was. Katana was friendly, hardworking, dependable, and trustworthy.
The home itself was good and clean with good accommodations. However, the view was not as good as we had hoped. We were blocked from seeing much of the water by the other buildings, most of which were run down. However, there was a slight view. Nevertheless, spending time on the rooftop was a great way to start and end the day.
The nearest mosque was very close, and the speakers were almost right outside our bedroom window. So 4:30am call to prayers blasted us awake daily. The next call to prayer came about 20 minutes later, so returning to sleep was almost impossible. The early mornings took a toll.
The island of Lamu was fun and beautiful. I would have liked being closer to Shela beach. However, we also enjoyed spending time in Lamu town and we enjoyed apendalo house. The owner was good to work with and Katana made the whole experience better than it would have been anywhere else.Response from Herbert - 12/31/2012

There are abt. 35 mosques in Lamu Town and abt. 3000 donkies. Take this "noise" as part of the show! I am glad you liked it.

The services offered by Katana was excellent, he is a very kind, friendly and nice boy. The house was generally good, but the kitchen should be more organized, there is a lack of kitchen utensiles (oven, tray, plastic table cloth, more glasses, plates, forks, knife that can really cut, small saucepan for milk, scissors, washing machine)
The location was very good, we liked very much to stay in the top roof after dinner; we didn't like all the noises during the night (donkeys) and early in the morning (the muslim prayer) but we know that these are not your fault...Response from Herbert - 11/12/2012
Owner
Sorry, a washing machine and an oven has never been offered! How many glasses did you 4 people need? There are water-glasses, juice-glasses and wine-glasses! There is also a sharpening rod,....
Anyway, after all you enjoyed your stay - and thats important to me! Thanks for coming to Apendalo House. -

Chicago, Illinois, USAPerfect place to stay in Lamu
Left on 08/26/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Apendalo House was exactly what my family and I were looking for in Lamu. Lamu itself is beautiful, friendly, and charming. The house is all of that and more. Katana makes sure everything is perfect for your stay, from picking you up at the airport to finding the best dhow captain for a sunset cruise. We bought live lobsters on the street when we first arrived, and Katana arranged to have a chef come in and cook it for us, along with coconut rice and plenty of vegetables.
The breezes that come through the house are perfect for sleeping. The rooftop was the perfect place to chill out after a day of walking all over the island.
I cannot recommend this place enough. When I return to Lamu, I will also return to apendalo House.Response from Herbert - 08/26/2012

If you like five star resorts where the local area is just scenery this is not for you. Apendalo house is an opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. That can include some negatives as well as positives, but overall this is a wonderful place. Appendalo House is a beautiful Swahili style house, and you feel very safe and secure there. Everything is very cheap in Lamu, and you could easily live on $10 a day. We bought some beautiful silver jewellery, tailored clothing and lots of souvenirs. I can't speak highly enough of Katana, the housekeeper. A lovely, Christian young man, hard working and with impeccable manners.
Would love to go back one day!Response from Herbert - 11/04/2011

Very nice to stay inside Lamu, the house is nice and clean, the attendant Katana was very friendly and helpful. 1 suggestion would be to impregnate the mosquito nets with K-Otrin or equivalent as we were literally eaten by mospuitoes despite the nets.

Our stay at apendalo was really nice. The house is spacious and really clean. From the roof top, you have a nice sea view and it is an excellent place to relax with a nice breeze. The housekeeper, Katana, has a friendly character and made us feel very welcome. He took good care of us and he also helped us to plan our days in Lamu.

UKBeautiful house set in the heart of Lamu- definitely recommended
Left on 04/29/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We really enjoyed our stay at Apendalo house. It is a beautiful house built and furnished in traditional swahili style. We found it to be very spacious and comfortable, with everything we could need. We especially enjoyed the roof terrace which provided an amazing view over Lamu and a cool sea breeze!
The house is located right in the centre of Lamu town. We enjoyed this aspect as it was handy to get into town- especially handy at night to go to restaurants. Its central location does mean it is quite noisy- you can hear donkeys and people in the neighbouring houses chatting. However, this did add to our experience and we really felt we were getting know the true Lamu.
The housekeeper Katana was really friendly and helpful- for example he did our shopping and helped us to arrange a dhow trip. Very useful to have a trusted source of local knowledge!
Overall, I would say this is a very special house which was a lovely place to spend a few days. I just wished we could have stayed longer! -

Left on 02/18/2010 for a stay in April 2009
A great town house in the old part of Lamu, nicely and well renovated, furnished in Lamu Style. The terrace on the rooftop is a place we used most.
We enjoyed our stay and the service of the houseboy Katana. It was nice to have a cook, who also did the shopping.
