Additional Location Information
Alta Verapaz is a department in the north central part of Guatemala. The capital and chief city of the department is Cobán. Lanquin is set in at the heart of the Alta Verapaz region, which is a region rich in natural beauty. The area is famous for its coffee production and for its green, lush rolling hills and stunning valleys.
Lanquín is situated at 380 m above sea level. It contains 16,500 people, many of Q'eqchi' Maya descent. It covers an area of 208 km².
A large cave complex, known as Grutas de Lanquín is situated just 1 km west of the town, and 11 km south of Lanquín is the Cahabón River and its natural monument Semuc Champey. Lanquín is often used as starting point for trips to Semuc Champey and the various majestic caves.
Many tourists that visit Semuc Champey say that it is the most spectacular natural attraction in Guatemala. It is a world wide unique attraction, set in a steep lush limestone valley where the River Cahabon passes through and sinks below the spring water filled crystal clear pools. The many pools that Semuc champey offers allows the visitor to bathe and explore all day long in peace, in what can only be descibed as paradise. There is a mirador hike that lends an incredible birds eyeview over the area, and occasionally even howler monkies may be seen, as well as a large number of tropical birds. No visit to the Lanquin area is complete without a visit to the Lanquin caves and the Kan´ba caves, both of which are spectacular in their own unique way.
Most visitors to Lanquin also express dellite in their trips in inflatable tubes down either the River Lanquin or River Cahabon. There are also opportunities to join a White water rafting trip down either of the rivers. The River Cahabon is Guatemala´s longest river and most famous rafted river, it emptys in to Guatemala´s largest lake, Lake Izabal near the Atlantic Coast.
Near to the hosue there are also hostels that allow the visitor to go out for a night to mix with the many tourists tthat visit the area, have some drinks and eat some fresh, well prepared international and Guatemalan food.
A popular past time at La Poza is bird spotting, due to the many tropical birds that visit the land and river. Occassionally as you swim in the river you may see small river otters pass by.
When the river is high it is possible to surf on the river with our surf board. This is done by holding on to a rope that is attached to a tree by the river. After a surfing the river, take a coctail in a hammok by the river then finish the day in our sauna, cool off with a dip and the river and then have the most peaceful sleep imaginable to the sound of the river outside your window.
Lanquin can be reached in private vehicle just 1.5hours from Coban, or in one of many shuttle buses from various parts of Guatemala. The house has private, secure parking for up to 3 cars.

BRISTOLFun, adventure, peace and nature.

Me and my husband decided to take a trip out of antigua and had heard that Lanquin and Semuc Champey were worth the visit. We weren´t disappointed. The house is in a lovely spot, right by the river with all the immenties we needed for a peaceful, romantic but adventurous vacation. We also found Matt and Hector very helpful, and both of them went out of their way to improve our trip. We took a shuttle from antigua which was easy, although quite a long travel.
Semuc Champey is more beautiful than they say, and tubing down the river to La Poza was one of the best things I have ever done. We highly recommned La Poza and Lanquin. Sarah. -

Austin, TexasWonderful Trip to Lanquin & Semuc Champey
Left on 09/13/2012 for a stay in May 2012
We were so surprised to find such a comfortable house out there in the wilds of Guatemala. The pictures just didn´t do it justice. Our kids loved the ping pong table, and our son even managed to stand up on the river surf board. The adults loved the sauna at night, and all the little areas to relax in. I have never seen such an incredible place as Semuc Chumpay, in fact we think our visit to the Lanquin area was our favourite in Guatemala. Our thanks go out to Matt who really helped us plan our trip, and to Hector who looked after our silliest needs during our stay. We really relaxed on our 4 nights at la Poza, and it was great to have such a nice kitchen to cook our favourite foods after so many days eating in restaurants... don´t forget to buy your food in Coban as Lanquin doesn´t offer such a great variety of food and drink. A big thumbs up!
