“A little slice of Tuscan heaven - Luni apartment” For the second year in succession we stayed in Luni apartment. The apartment is contemporary and the living/dining area is very spacious. The mezzanine lounge area is perfect for a quiet read or drinking and chatting. Bathroom huge!! Comfortable beds. The property itself was clean and well maintained. As in the first year we were warmly welcomed by Mirella and Francesco - more so in the second year; it was like visiting friends. Both can give lots of information on the local area and nothing is too much trouble it seems. Tavernelle itself is well placed for visiting lesser known but amazing places which often are not found in (British) guidebooks - maybe I'll write one! Beaches are a short drive away, Cinque Terre is well worth a trip and I would advise taking the train from aulla - you don't have to worry about parking then! Pisa, Lucca, Viareggio and other places are all accessible too. What we loved about the apartment and location was the feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle but not being isolated. There are fabulous walks around. But what made it all special were Mirella's evenings when she cooked for the guests. Wonderful, local food, excellent wine, and a great chance to chat with other guests, most of whom were other Europeans. One particular evening we had German, Dutch, Russian Scottish and English guests. Great for discussions over bruschetta, local pecorino, salted olives , wine etc . A bread van comes most mornings - listen out for the horn. For supermarket shopping though you do need to drive to aulla where you have a few to choose from The pool is a good size for the apartment but is cool. Herbs grow in the garden with lavender and makes for a heavenly aroma. There is a local bar within easy walking distance and does good rustic food (portions are huge, be very hungry or share!). Would we recommend - yes and we have. Will we go back? Yes - For sure.

About La Spezia

The perpetually pleasant weather and scenery of La Spezia have made the town one of the most popular vacation destinations in Italy. Visitors from all over Europe travel here for the historic architecture, popular vineyard tours, and restaurants that offer some of the best traditional Italian cooking in the country. Sample the Italian cuisine at one of the restaurants in Via del Prione, spend a day window shopping at the array of upscale boutiques found along Riomaggiore, or walk along the winding cobblestone streets throughout La Spezia while admiring the beautiful architecture.

If you'd rather see specific sites during your stay, be sure to make time for some of these must-see attractions and activities in the area:

  • Museo Tecnico Navale: This old naval museum features largely restored vessels that are up to several hundred years old.
  • Go to the Harbor: The local harbor offers beautiful sunset views and opportunities to watch the elaborate boats that enter and exit the area.
  • Museo del Sigillo: This museum is home to what is reported to be the largest collection of seals anywhere in the world.
  • Campiglia Ridges: Go hiking at this popular site and take in the views from the top of the rocky cliffs and shorelines.
  • Val di Vara: A nearby town just outside of La Spezia, Val di Vara is filled with long walking trails and plenty of shady forests.
  • Try the local cuisine: Dine at one of the restaurants offering fresh seafood and pasta, or head to one of the many nearby vineyards to try wine samples on site.

The small town of La Spezia has a surprising number of big festivals that people from all over the country travel to attend each year. If you're here in November, sample the culinary delights from some of the best chefs in Italy at Farm in the City, or wait a month in order to witness the range of Christmas festivities and celebrations in the area throughout December. The biggest festival in La Spezia is the St. Joseph's Festival in March, a three-day celebration featuring a town fair and art show that has taken place for over 350 years.

The Italian Riviera is known for being one of the biggest vacation destinations in the world, and the number of vacation rentals throughout La Spezia are a strong indicator of this. Choose a high-end condo with luxury amenities that overlooks one of the vineyards, or rent a villa in the middle of all the fine dining and shopping options.

There are a number of day trip options just outside of town, which makes the extensive public transportation system in town an excellent resource. Buses, trains and even public ferries will take you anywhere in the Riviera quickly and inexpensively. If you have some extra time in the area, visit the charming village of Viareggio or the historical sites of Forte dei Marmi, both of which can be reached within 90 minutes by car.

The Blackberry Cottage
Utterly Relaxing away From It all

The property is a very nicely renovated small tower house in the hills above La Spezia with a great view over the gulf and a great, well-tended flower garden where you can always find a shady spot to read or relax. It´s nice, e.g., for your last week of holidays when you just want to have peace and quiet and an occasional visit to the beach. Getting to a nice beach (e.g. Portovenere) takes some effort so that shouldn´t be your first priority while staying at this house. The Cinqueterre is around the corner but you need a mode of transportation (car?) to it or the station at La Spezia. The hills up to house may be manageable for experienced bicyclists but not to everyone´s liking. La Spezia itself is excellent for shopping and, since kitchen and outdoor grill are in good shape, it is well-suited for families and hobby cooks. Quiet surroundings and no close neighbors add to the feeling of a getaway. While the beds were comfortable we missed a proper sitting-room. In July, this was not a real problem due to the huge garden, but in fall or spring the kitchen sitting space would be rather cramped for four people. (We suggest converting one of the lower rooms into a kind of living area for cooler or rainy days and the house would also be perfect for the off-season.) Some of the garden furniture needs to be replaced and I trust it will be since the property is well tended. We can´t really say anything about the service since we didn´t have any problems which needed to be addressed or fixed but the caretaker made a nice and competent impression. We all felt very comfortable and would return any time.see more
Wonderful apartments in Tuscany close to 5 Terre
Unspoiled Italy

The Palazzo is a jewel of a vacation locale. I have spent a fair amount of time in Italy but I did not know such unspoiled lovely places still existed there. The village is quaint; the Palazzo is majestic but the apartments still manage to be homey (very clean and comfortable); the surrounding area is wild and gorgeous. Mirella and Francesco are the most gracious hosts you could hope to find--truly charming old-school Italians who make you realize why Italy has been luring tourists for centuries. I highly recommend Francesco's wine tours-- he is very knowledgeable but not pretentious at all. All in all, one of the most welcoming destinations I have had the pleasure to experience as a traveler.see more
