About São Miguel

One of nine islands sitting in the middle of the Atlantic, São Miguel is the largest of Portugal’s autonomous Azores. It's a popular stopping off point for people sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.

To book accommodation on São Miguel, there’s nowhere better than FlipKey where you will find a vast list of properties to suit all budgets and tastes.

About Sao Miguel, Azores

Discovered by Portuguese explorer by Gonçalo Velho Cabral in 1427, São Miguel was colonized with settlers from the mainland, who, due to the island’s volcanic interior, stayed near to the coast.

With a surface area of 293 square miles, São Miguel is not only the largest of the Azores archipelago, but also home to 150,000 inhabitants. A third of these live in the capital, Ponta Delgada.

Upon arrival on Ponta Delgada, you are greeted by a modern marina, turn-of-the-century buildings, cobblestone streets and ocean-front cafes.

Known as the “Green island “because of its diverse landscape of foggy mountains and a rich green hued fauna, São Miguel provides you with an opportunity to enjoy untouched nature in a peaceful setting.

Tourism is expected to take off soon, with low-cost carriers RyanAir and EasyJet offering daily flights from Lisbon and Porto starting in 2017.

What to do in São Miguel

Being virtually untouched by mass tourism, visiting São Miguel is all about nature and the chance to interact with it one-on-one. A great example is a small cove at Ponta da Ferraria where the ocean water is warmed by a geothermal spring. This means you can swim in both hot and cold water.

Whale-watching tours depart three times a day from the Marina in Ponta Delgada offering tourists the chance to get close to both whales, dolphins and the occasional turtle.

While on São Miguel, be sure to visit Lagoa do Fogo—a picturesque volcanic lake created 15 million years ago that remains untouched thanks to strict laws that protect it from developers.

If you liked the movie Jurassic Park, you will love the gardens at Terra Nostra Park. They're a green adventure—sadly lacking the dinosaurs though.

Top travel tips for São Miguel

The best time to visit the Azores depends on what you want to do. With crowds not being a deciding factor, the summer months between July and October are perfect for outdoor activities. If whale-watching is top of your list—and believe us, it should be!—plan to visit during the migration between April and June. With much of the activity focused on outdoor events, avoid the rainy season between February and May.

For the best views and unforgettable sunsets, visit Miradouro De Santa Iria on the island's northeast coast.

For now, São Miguel remains an untouched outdoor adventure park unspoilt by mass tourism. Biking, surfing, fishing, canoeing is all on hand and just waiting to be enjoyed by visitors to the stunning island. To book affordable accommodation, start searching the dozens of options on FlipKey to suit any budget.

Tradicampo - Casa Da Fonte, Sao Miguel, Azores
The house was perfect - the island has indescribable beauty

Casa Da Fonte is everything you see in the pictures on this website. What you can't see is the peacefulness of the surrounding garden and how your entire body relaxes when sitting on the patio each morning enjoying breakfast and watching the farmers tend to their gardens and livestock. In the evening we would light the fire on the patio and have friends over to enjoy the lovely view, some good wine and various foods, native to San Miguel. We felt very welcome when Ricardo (the owner) greeted us upon arrival with fresh baked bread and pastries. We enjoyed exploring the island during the day and we loved coming home to this lovely, homey and very comfortable cottage. We are planning on a return visit and we hope this home is available for us again.see more
Tradicampo - Casa Da Talha, Sao Miguel, Azores
Magical, cozy cottage with stunning ocean views

The cottage was stellar--everything we could have hoped for. Very comfortable, great (quiet/quaint) location, and every amenity you could ask for. Our host, Ricardo offered numerous tips on what to see on the island during our limited time. He really helped us make the most of our visit. Can't wait to go back.see more
Vila Franca do Campo Apartment, Sao Miguel, Azores
Great location for all island trips

We were heartily welcomed by Rita, a charming, competent and positive person. The paperwork and the introduction to the apartment were done quickly and efficiently. We were impressed by the size, content and cleanliness of the apartment. Flowers and a bottle of wine were a nice welcome gesture. The location close to the main highway made the apartment the perfect starting point for our hiking adventures and general trips around the island. All went well and we enjoyed our time in Vila Franca, and the whole island. Thank you for making our stay a beautiful memory.see more
BEACH HOUSE RENT - AZORES
Spacious apartment and great location: the sea on your doorstep!

The beach house was much more spacious than we had anticipated - with two large bedrooms and a garden and roof terrace in addition to the outside space shown on the site. We were also pleasantly surprised to discover it had a private parking space right next door. We felt very at home in the property and appreciated the goodies left to welcome us. Sophia's mother also provided some useful local tips about restaurants (not many in the town but the ones we tried were great) and shopping (there's a well-stocked mini-market a short walk away). The highlight of the property is the view (with beautiful sunsets), followed closely by the location, which is just a moment away from a life-guard attended beach. It means you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean!see more
Beautiful Place Spa Sunset
Amazing place, great location and a wonderful host! So much more than we could have imagined!

Amazing place, great location and a wonderful host! So much more than we could have imagined! As we arrived on the property we were thrilled to see a beautiful home with lush gardens and amazing surroundings. As for the apartment we rented, it was clean, very nicely decorated and looked like new. It was important for us to have a fully equipped kitchen with a stove, small oven, refrigerator and plenty of cooking utensils as we cooked the majority of our meals on-site. We were also very pleased with the comfortable bed, hot shower and reliable wifi. The ocean is literally a 3 minute walk from the property. We spent many evenings walking along the shore, taking in the beautiful views and watching the sunset. We also enjoyed the scenic 15-20 minute walk to the quaint village of Agua de Pau, where we were able catch the bus to Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo and other neighboring towns for day trips. The village has a couple grocery stores as well as an excellent cafe, Senhora De Paó, which was a great place to get lunch, pastries, bread and coffee. The host, Helder, is such a delightful individual! He really went above and beyond to make our stay such a great experience. He was very responsive to all our inquires (we literally emailed him from the states at what would have been 3AM his time and were surprised to get a response less than 15 minutes later). He also invited us over to his apartment the morning we arrived for coffee and to go over things to see and do on the island. We jokingly mentioned the famous orange cake I read about in other reviews and, although he was very busy taking care of the house and other guest, he made the time to make one for us. He really made us feel welcomed and cares that his guests have a comfortable stay. MANY MANY THANKS TO HELDER FOR YOUR KINDNESS!!!YOU MADE THIS A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE! We HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here and will definitely stay here again the next time we are back in the Azores.see more
