Coolangatta, AustraliaAmazing oasis from the hustle and bustle
Left on 05/09/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Stayed in the villa with my wife 2 small children (aged 1 and 3) and 3 other adults, and I dont think I will stay anywhere else when I return to Bali.
The villa is massive and provided ample space for all of us. The backyard is huge and was great for the kids to run around and get out of the house. The bedrooms are big (the master is massive) and each one has airconditioning.
Putu and the cleaning staff were very helpful and nothing was a hassel, any of our requests were met as a matter of prioriry and they all made our stay very enjoyable.
The villa is a real escape from the noise and hustle and bustle of Legian, it really was like our own private get away in the beautiful gardens and pool.
Ringo the driver is the best driver we have used on our many trips to Bali, he speaks very good English and was always contactable by phone to help us out either to buy things for the children or any question we had for that matter.
Thankyou so much for the amazing holiday, do not have a bad thing to say about Villa Maya or the staff. We will definately be back!!!Response from Tara Byrne & Made Indiarta - 05/11/2013

We recently stayed there in December 2012 and beginning of January, the photos do not show the true size of the house it was amazing it was all open plan downstairs and the bedrooms were so large and comfortable. The swimming pool was very large and very hard to believe you walk up the alleyway and you are right in the heart of all the shops and restaurants. As the villa is off the main road it was very peaceful. Putu the house manager was so beautiful and helpful, nothing was ever a problem. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay, booking the villa was easy and the owner Tara is very prompt in replying to any questions you have and very helpful. Thankyou for our beautiful stay.

We ( family of 7 ) have just returned from a 10 day stay at Villa Maya. The villa is situated in a small gang off garlic lane, the position is fantastic with everything you need at your doorstep.
I cannot say anything different to previous reviews they are accurate and I agree with them all. This villa is a gem in the middle of the hustle and bustle.
There was plenty of room for all of us in the villa and we all really enjoyed the space as it was huge.
Bedroom #1 huge
Bedroom #2 big
Bedroom #3 good size
3 Bathrooms upstairs ( 2 ensuites )
Power room downstairs
Living area downstairs massive
The pool was kept clean during our stay and was lovely to come home to cool off in. The garden is very big with lots of trees so it is not difficult to find a nice shady spot to relax, we even saw a squirrel.
Putu came in every day and was always available to answer any questions we had or she would come and go very discreetly.
Ringo ( driver ) was a real character and the teenagers used his services for day trip.
All my emails and requests to the owner Tara were answered promptly and the cake for my son's birthday was delicious.
Thankyou Tara, Putu and Ringo for looking after us all during our holiday.

My partner and I stayed here for a week and I have to say it was one of the most pleasant experiences That both of us have had in this part of the world. The villa is just lovely and luxurious, why go to a hotel? The daily cleaning of the rooms and outside area including the pool is just fantastic and the staff very polite and courteous.
I like that you can walk into the hustle and bustle of the famous Kuta area or if that is too much you can walk into the more sophisticated Legian. Both areas have many restaraunts and the shopping is just fabulous.
In short we will be coming back.Response from Tara Byrne & Made Indiarta - 01/21/2013

We have just come back from staying in Villa Maya Sep/Oct with our family, usually we stay in resort/villas, but after staying here we will be booking again for our next trip.Perfect for the family, close to everything we needed... shops, beach and restaurants.Very spacious & teenage kids loved having their very own bathroom each!Putu came in everyday for the housekeeping & is fantastic.Even organised for daughters hairbraiding & nails to be done at the house, she is a wealth of imformation if we wanted to know anything as to where to shop and eat, & to have a driver (Ringo) anytime we needed was excellent. Aircons work well in all the bedrooms and is very clean.House is down a short alleyway but torches were provided in case we needed them at night.Would highly recommend staying here.. we could see that Tara and Made really love their Bali house and felt like a home to us. Thankyou so much Putu and Ringo for an awesome job, and Tara & Made for opening your home to make us feel at home.

Hi Tara,
Please accept my comments for our whole group that went to Bali in September.
Your Villa was absolutely wonderful and we had the best holiday ever!!!
We are so happy with our decision to stay at your Villa that we vowed to never stay at any other accomodation In our future Bali holidays.
The villa is well located in Legian and so close to all attractions!
Patu was wonderful and very helpful with all our inquiries and made our stay so much more enjoyable.
I have recommended so many family and friends to your Villa and I hope their experience the same fantastic time as we did.
We plan to make an annual pilgrimage to Bali and stay at your Villa but know the popularity may hamper our plans. I just hope we can get the dates we want when we decide to go and will be booking well in advance to ensure another great holiday.
Thank you once again for the fantastic experience and look forward to the next holiday.

Hi Tara, sorry this has taken so long for me to organise my feedback.
Villa Maya was in a fantastic location and the villa itself is perfect for couples and for kids. The pool is in a perfect position under the trees so it doesnt end up like you are swimming in a bath. A big thank you to Tara the owner for making this the easiest booking I have ever made. There were lots of emails back and forth and Tara always responded promptly.
The complimentary stash of dvds kept early rising kids occupied and the ping pong table was a great afternoon activity. The rooms were great and the living space perfect for us. All five of us enjoyed staying in the Villa and will definately be back. Dont hesitate to book at Villa Maya.Response from Tara Byrne & Made Indiarta - 10/23/2012

Villa Maya exceeds all expectations. Although reviews say it is bigger than they expected, it still did not prepare us for the size of the villa and garden area. The living area is huge. We arrived at night and thought the garden and pool must be shared with other villas it was so big - but no, it was all for our own use. Travelling with an active toddler, it was fantastic to have such a lovely garden to play in. The stairs are quite steep, but they were no problem with the baby and having the doors in the living area meant the pool use could be controlled and supervised. The housekeeper, Putu is an absolute gem and a great cook. Dining in with our toddler was a nice option instead of having her confined to a high chair whilst trying to bolt down dinner at busy restaurants. Several restaurants in the area deliver take-away including Lemongrass (Thai) and Take II (Japanese). A great location tucked away down a tiny lane, near Padma and Mandira Hotels and Legian Market and a short walk to the beach. The lane is very dark at night but torches are provided. Great laundry service available opposite the lane. At 2000 rupiah per item, pressed and packaged, it's a bonus. There is a doctor's surgery very close which is reassuring when travelling with a baby. Tara responded to all queries promptly during the booking process which made it very easy. Our only suggestion for improvement would be a microwave to make it easier to warm baby bottle and food.

Left on 05/03/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We recently spent 3 nights at Villa Maya. It is a beautiful, spacious, 3 bedroom villa with everything a guest could ask for. We enjoyed the tranquility of being the only 4 guests (having never stayed in a villa before) while being only metres away from the hustle and bustle of Garlic Lane.
The grounds are well kept with a lovely tropical feel. Although the pool is small, for a small number of guests it is just perfect!
Ringo was there at the airport to deliver us safely to the door and he organised someone to drive us to Ubud on leaving Legian.
Putu looked after us beautifully, keeping the villa spotlessly clean and going out of her way to deliver cold drinks to us. We enjoyed chatting to her, learning more about the Indonesian culture.
I was very impressed with all my communications with the owner, Tara. Each of my emails...and many questions, was answered promptly and in a friendly manner. I would certainly book with her again and would recommend Tara and her villa to anyone interested in a villa holiday in Bali.

This was a fantastic alternative to staying in a hotel. The staff were incredibly helpful and kind. Ringo took us on a day trip which took in all the sights we had asked for. And Sutu came over late one night to get the power back on. Beds were very comfortable and the pool was a real bonus. However, I am not sure that the place was sprayed regularly for mosquitos as myself and another person in our group returned to australia with dengue fever, and we are still not completely well. Suggest more frequent spraying to avoid this problem in future.
Response from Tara Byrne & Made Indiarta - 02/22/2012

Hi Janet,
Thanks so much for the review!
I am so sorry to hear you got Dengue Fever.. its awful - my mum got it in Bali in 2010 (bitten near a pond in a restaurant) and took about 6 months to fully recover. Its so important to bring this up as there has been a spike in Dengue Fever in Bali since 2010 - particularly in the Rainy Season (Oct to Mar) - but all year round.
I would advise anyone going to Bali, or anywhere else with Dengue Fever/Mosquitos, to apply a good mosquito repellent in the day time - not just at night and to be very careful near water and gardens.
Thanks for the good advice on spraying - we do spray the villa before guests arrive - but we will ensure both the garden and villa are sprayed more regularly.
Best wishes with your recovery,
Tara -

Hi Tara - just wanted to drop you a short note to let you know what a wonderful time we had a Villa Maya. The house was very comfortable and Putu and Ringo were amazingly helpful. Ringo managed to take us to a couple of places off the beaten track ie the livestock markets and also had us trekking through the rice paddies for a coconut. Putu prepared a seafood feast for us on our last night so a very special thank you. Although this was our first visit to Bali we will definitely be returning and will certainly let our friends know about Villa Maya.

We have been going to Bali for 20 years and have stayed in resorts. Never again. Villa Maya was everything we could ask for. We travelled with my son and his family who has a 5 year old and she was never out of the pool. Nor were we for that matter. Putu and Ringo were excellent. Accommodating in every way. At the end of the holiday they started to feel like family and were very sad to leave them. We were referring to the villa as home so much so that we have rebooked for next year. The location is excellent close to restaurants, shopping and the beach. Right in the hub but turn down the gang heading for home you do not hear a thing. Thoroughly recommend it.

We, like a few of the other reviews, are reluctant to say how great this villa is, as we want to come back here and stay but probably wont be able to as it gets too well known and booked up for months in advance. (Already looking at booking for next year and thinking we had better do it soon). We have just returned from 12 nights at Villa Maya and we can honestly say that we are never going to stay in a hotel again. This gem of a villa is situated in a ideal location, down a laneway just off Garlic Lane, (where there is fantastic food and shopping galore), but once you get home and close the doors you are in heaven. It was great to be able to come home from the hustle and bustle of the streets and just be able to flop in the pool and relax without having to try to fight for a pool lounge and space in the pool.. It was soo relaxing and quiet that it was hard to believe that just outside the gates there was another world.
The villa was nice and clean with Putu coming in everyday to clean it. She is a real asset to the villa as you can ask her just about anything and she will be able to help you.
The villa catered for everything you needed to make your stay comfortable and the only thing we could think of that was missing was a news channel that could speak english. (It was only that everyone back home in australia was telling us that there was a Tsanami alert for Bali and there was an earthquake in Bali as well, but we couldnt get any infomation from the TV that we could understand. But the locals came to our rescue and told us everything we needed to know)
Thanks Tara for your beautiful Villa.
We will be back.

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We had a wonderful time and Putu was a great help both around the home and with any questions we had. She also did some babysitting at night for us for a couple of hours.
Traveling with four children, one under 2 can often be a nightmare, so we wanted something like home but still know we were on holidays, we got both. The kids never got out of the pool! My husband was hesitant at first to stay in a house rather than a hotel but he has said - never a hotel again. We have recommended your villa to several people already since we got back and will come again, as long as we can get in :) -

Sydney AustraliaVilla Maya "Just Fantastic!"
Left on 01/13/2011 for a stay in December 2010
Our family has just returned from a two week holiday in Villa Maya.
I write this review with reluctance, as I would really love to keep this wonderful place all to ourselves. However, in fairness to Tara the owner I will give you my personal opinion.
We were picked up on Christmas Eve after a two hour flight delay by Putu and her husband, and driven to our Villa.
We were very pleased with the layout. The downstairs living area was huge, and with three teenage boys, we found this to be a great alternative to squishy hotel rooms. There is no air conditioning down stairs, but there are 3 large ceiling fans to keep you cool and you can slide the glass doors back and this really opens it up and lets the air flow through. The TV cabinet is fully stocked with an incredible about of recent Dvds, great for those rainy days.
If you have a laptop, there is a USB internet connection, which we used for the 2 weeks without needing to recharge.
The kitchen is good, with a gas stove top, and a full sized fridge for all the drinks. There is a toaster, sandwich maker and blender supplies, so basically all you need.
Upstairs has the three air conditioned bedrooms. Two have ensuites and a main bathroom with a bathtub. The showers were great with good water pressure and great hot water.
The grounds are very spacious, and the pool was kept very clean and was used many times throughout our visit. It was nice to be able to just flop into the pool whenever it suited and I loved not having to fight for a sunlounge.
Putu the housekeeper comes and goes without intruding, and was very helpful.
The Villa is in a great location in a laneway off a very busy street, called Jalan Sahadewa . We found that you could buy anything on this one street alone. There are many places to eat and drink, with a lot of the places offering happy hours each afternoon. It is very busy at night, and whilst it’s not like the night clubs on Legian Street, it is very busy and the music pumps, but finishes up at a reasonable time.
The Villa is very secure, and at no time did anyone in our family feel unsafe. We all took little torches with us and this made coming home at night much easier. Whilst the laneway has lighting, there are a couple of spots which benefit from the use of your torch.
There is a money changer right in between Garlic Lane & Ours restaurants. This is an authorised money changer, and you will not be ripped off. Do not use the street money changers with a higher rate, as you will lose out in the end, but probably won’t realise it until it’s too late. There is also another good one in the Circle K on the left hand side on the corner of Sahadewa and Padma. The guy at this place actually ran after one of my children, because they had short changed him 100K rupiah. This is usually unheard of.
So, all in all we had a wonderful holiday at Villa Maya. Tara was very efficient and communication was always clear. Any requests were accommodated and nothing was too much trouble for her. It was hard to believe I was dealing with someone on the other side of the world!
The good reviews on Villa Maya are obviously flowing on, as it is already booked for my next 2 planned visits to Bali...Grr!

Cobra, AustraliaVilla Maya Legian
Left on 11/24/2010 for a stay in October 2010
I have recently returned from a 16 day stay in Bali at Villa Maya Legian just of Garlic Lane. We were travelling with 16 month and 3 year children.
I booked the Villa directly with the owner Tara and everything went very smoothing and to plan. Tara is an excellent communicator and everything was exactly as described and explained.
We were met at the airport by Putu & Ringgo and taken back to our Villa. The first time when you pull up to walk into the villa it is a bit of a shock especially at night. The villa is situated down a narrow alley that runs of Garlic Lane. Once you get to the front gate of the villa and you enter all fears are allayed when you enter a fantastic private oasis.
The location is great in the heart of Legian with a short taxi ride or walk to Kuta or Seminyak. There are plenty of fantastic eating places nearby and a short 5min walk to the beach.
Putu who does the daily cleaning of the Villa is extremely helpful and it very inconspicuous. She is more than happy to help with advice about the area as well as organise your laundry requirements.
The Villa layout is good with a great open plan downstairs area with a modern kitchen and 3 large bedrooms upstairs. There is large garden around the pool which was great to keep us cool and relaxed during out stay.
The downstairs area was good to be able to keep young children inside away from the pool. As there are no pool fences in Bali it is a good to be able to keep the kids away form the pool.
We used the driver Ringgo who picked us up from the airport for several day trips and we have no problems to recommend him to everyone. We will definitely us him again in future trips.
Overall we were very happy with Villa Maya Legian and would have no problem at all to recommend the Villa to anybody. Tara and her staff were all very accommodating and the whole trip and booking process went very smoothly. -

Guangzhou, ChinaAn oasis in busy Legian
Left on 10/14/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Although Legian didn't really appeal to us, we had a great time. Mainly because at the oasis-like villa you feel miles away from all the noise from bars, shopkeepers and the "massageee, massageee's"
When we first got out of the car at Jl. Sahadewa I couldn't believe we were in the right place. It's a very busy street, where you'd least expect a villa. The street turned out to have many different side-streets (called "gang").
The villa is situated in one of these (Gang Viii), way back from the busy street. It's a real oasis. The villa is spacious and beautiful. It has a big garden, with a nice swimming pool. The housekeeper is very friendly and helpful. Her sister and she even cooked an Indonesian dinner for us. Some of us are food-fanatics, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about the Indonesian kitchen. -

We travel to Bali a couple of times a year and have done so for the past 20 odd years. In the early days, large hotels were the preferred choice, then we changed to smaller hotels. This time round I stumbled across Villa Maya, and decided to give the Villa experience a try. Wow is all I can say. I was nervous at first, but all concerns were dispelled when we opened the gates to what became our Bali haven for the next 9 days.
Location is amazing, tucked away down a little laneway, close to restaurants and shopping, and only a 5 minute stroll to the beach. Huge garden with beautiful well maintained pool, and the villa itself is like something out of a designer home magazine.
Great way to have additional space for a family or group of friends, allowing full privacy with the huge bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs, but the opportunity to come together downstairs in the beautiful living areas.
Putu the housekeeper flits in and out, but so discreetly that you hardly know she is there, it was comforting however to know that we could call her at any time if we needed anything.
The Villa Maya experience has changed the way I will travel in the future, and I have already recommended it to all of my Bali travelling friends.
Booking process was easy, though it would have been easier to have transferred the money to an australian account, other than that, nothing negative at all about our stay.
I am writing this and wish I was back on my sun lounge at the amazing Villa Maya.
Thanks Tara, we will be back

Words cannot describe our stay at Villa Maya Legian. It was our secret garden 100m down a lane off a bustling street, that you left behind once you opened the gates. We were so impressed after agonising over the internet what to book for a perfect romantic getaway to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We hit the jackpot, from the airport where we were met by Putu our housekeeper who was so lovely and attentive, and when we saw the house it was like stepping into a house in hollywood, really big, 3 amazing bedrooms overlooking our lovely pool, no fighting off other guests to save a sun lounger which happens at the local 5* hotels, also you could swim in the evening all you liked, in comparison to hotel pools which close around 6pm. Complete privacy and intimacy provided with high fences and locked gates, so very good security overall. The villa is well furnished, and perfect for self catering, we just walked to many nearby local restaurants, so many to choose from in Legian, we particularly liked Mozarella, Seaside, Blue Ocean, all have great food and prices and cocktails everything so cheap. Villa Maya is so central in Sahadewa Lane aka Garlic Lane, which has good bars and eateries also, only 5 mins walk to the beach. Overall we loved the Villa and will go back there, sometimes we wished our kids were all with us enjoying the facilities, it was the highlight of our 2 week stay in Bali, beyond our expectations, Our only regret was that we didn't stay for our whole 2 weeks at the villa while we were in Bali, but as it was our first time there we wanted to travel around abit, Thank you Tara for sharing your beautiful home, and your emails and help in arranging our holiday made everything easy, we simply loved our stay.

My wife and I and our three teenagers recently had a two week holiday in Bali the first five nights we spent at Villa Maya and the rest of the time we travelled around the island. From the start everything was fantastic I emailed Tara regarding dates available and she responded very quickly ,the whole booking process was simple and quick.
Upon our arrival we were met at the airport by a driver (Ringo) and the houskeeper (Putu) both of who were great and very helpfull, we employed Ringo for all our trips while in Bali.As this was our third trip to Bali over twenty years we chose a villa over a hotel for something a little different
and we could not have been happier it is situated in the middle of the activity in Legian and yet a short walk down a lane and you arrive at a secure peacful oasis on a large block with beatiful gardens and a lovely pool the villa is nothing short of magnificent with a huge living/dining area downstairs and three spacious well appointed bedrooms upstairs. This villa gives you the chance to experience all there is on offer in Kuta and Legian and surrounding areas yet leave all the hustle and bustle outside and retreat to the tranquill gardens and relax by the pool to recharge the batteries ready for the next outing. We could not have enjoyed our time at the villa any more than we did and could not recomend it highly enough,a fantastic villa Brendan Green -

The hectic streets of Legian and Kuta were made bareble by being able to retreat into the oasis that is Villa Maya. The facilities were lovely, the owner was extremely accomodating to our special needs, the help was, well, very helpful, and we loved that the fences were high enough for midnight skinny-dipping! If you must go to Legian, this villa is definetely recommended!

We found the bunglow/house to be execellent. We were well looked after by the maid Putu who was very lovely. It was a nice feeling being in a house whilst on holidays, it was like being at home away from home.

Perth AustraliaModern Villa in Great Location
Left on 06/06/2010 for a stay in March 2010
We are a family of 6 (2ad+4chd) and it was our first family holiday to Bali so I was very anxious to get the accommodation right. From the first contact Tara was quick to respond, understanding, patient and gave me lots of information about the location. Admittedly I was hesitant and doubtful when I arrived at the address because the Villa is 100m down a lane way. But what a beautiful surprise once you are through the locked gates. A secure large well kept tropical garden and an inviting pool... then the villa... Everything from appliances to decor is modern and beautifully presented. Its modestly furnished, very clean, well maintained, secure and everything is very spacious! The bedrooms upstairs, are air conditioned with comfortable king size beds, two bedrooms have own ensuite and the main bathroom just opposite the third bedroom. The downstairs living area is enclosed with french doors so it keeps the mosquitoes out and young kids in away from the pool! It only has fans but still effective in keeping the large area cool. The kitchen has everything you need to cater a meal and bottled drinking water is provided.
Putu is the lovely lady who met and checked us in. She is also the one who comes in daily to clean, garden and turn down beds. She also helped me with laundry (she will drop off and pick up) and finding local food.
The location on Jalan Sahadewa aka Garlic Lane between Melasti and Padma St is just great. Everything from restaurants/cafes/bars, the art and clothes markets, boutiques, mini marts, Dvd's, reputable day spas, taxi's and the beach all very very close <5min walking distance. Its a busy and bustling area from 10am to 10pm. My family enjoyed he buzz of the neighbourhood but the best thing is that once you make the 2-3min walk down the lane, the setback from the street means that the villa is quiet and private. We felt safe at all times through out our week stay and would come back in a heartbeat if we could.
