To explore in the area
From the top of the Aiguille du Midi (Chamonix), the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car goes over the Glacier du Géant and on to the Pointe Hellbronner in Italy. The Montenvers Train: discover the famous Mer de Glace in its winter surroundings, at the foot of Les Drus, la Verte and Les Grandes Jorasses. As you arrive at the station, don't forget to visit the crystal gallery, the exhibition of alpine flora and fauna and the ice cave ( a real journey into the heart of the glacier).
Le Prarion : from the top of the Les Houches ski area, you have an amazing 360° panorama of the Mont-Blanc range, Les aiguilles de Chamonix including, in pole position, L'aiguille de Bionnassay.
Mont-Blanc Tramway: leaving from Fayet or Saint Gervais, going along the Col de Voza, the Mont-Blanc Tramway gives you winter access to the Plateau de Bellevue and to snow-shoe routes between the Col de Voza and Bellevue.
Local Activities
Les Houches is equally well placed to accommodate family skiing (it has been awarded the 'Famille Plus' label) as international events like the World Cup downhill competition (the KANDAHAR takes place on the 'Verte des Houches' run) and the Telemark World Cup. And newer disciplines (snowboarding) are right up there too with the 'DC shoes Area 43' snowpark and the 'Bellevue Air Park'.
Since 2010: A new beginners chair-lift has been installed at the top of the Prairon cable car.
Finally, because of its location at the entrance of the Chamonix Valley, a wide choice of ski areas are at your disposal.
Skiing for all (les Houches)
Les Houches' reputation may be closely linked with 'La Verte des Houches' and World Cup skiing but it is also an ideal place to learn. The beginners area at the top of the Prarion cable car has a special beginners chair-lift and a 'moving carpet' making life extra easy for those who aren't yet confident on skis.
Skiing on a grand scale (Grand Montets)
The best spot for 'big skiing' and freeride, reputed for its long pistes, reliable snow and its snow-park. Skiing with a View (Brévent / Flég¨re)
Sunshine skiing on south facing slopes with marvellous views over the Mont Blanc range, good for skiers and boarders of all abilities. Skiing back to nature (Le Domaine de Balme)

For anyone who like ski competitions, Marc BATTENEDIER (ski instructor, former competitor in the Ski World Cup and director of the KANDAHAR since 1978) offers a guided tour with a difference where you learn to read the course on the 'Verte des Houches' just as if you were about to take part in the big race. Off Piste Skiing
The history of off-piste in the Mont-Blanc Chamonix Valley was born in the glaciers where the descents seem to go on for ever. La Vallée Blanche, Le Pas de Ch¨vre, Le Glacier des Rognons, just a few of those legendary names The 'Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you on a 20-minute steep ascent out of Chamonix to carry you to the start of the Vallée Blanche. You have a 3000m descent to get back to the centre of Chamonix and at 22km it is one of the longest glacial itineraries in Europe.
Walking and Snow-shoeing
In the ski areas there are marked and maintained paths reserved for walkers allowing you to get close to the summits and enjoy the magnificent panoramas over the Mont Blanc range and the entire valley: Grand Montets, Belleville cable car, Vallorcine lift (Balme) Snow-shoeing is quite the best way to discover the local flora and fauna. Don't forget that walking in the mountains does require a certain amount of local knowledge so don't hesitate to ask for advice from the 'Office de Haute Montagne' or employ the services of a professional guide or instructor.
Toboggan: At Les Chavants there is a marked out area with 2 small tracks. At Le Tourchet there is an area in the middle of the village and equipment can be hired from the sports shop.
Skating: Facing Mont Blanc, the skating rink at Les Houches is an open-air, natural rink, right at the heart of the village. It is open in the evening, entry is free of charge and skates can be borrowed.
Cross-country/Nordic skiing: Cross-country enthusiasts will be delighted by over 70km of pistes and trails through forests, across snow fields and lakes. In Les Houches there are 10km of marked tracks. Private and group lessons are available through the ESF ski school.
Climbing: There is an indoor climbing wall measuring 1250m² with over 110 routes for all levels. Minimum age allowed: 9 years+. Equipment can be hired and childrens or adult lessons are available. Handiski: Various equipment is available for people with different disabilities (tandem skis, independent sitting skis, accompanied sitting skis) fully qualified ski instructors are specialists in instructing these disciplines. The lifts offer special tariffs for people with disabilities who need to be accompanied and, particularly in the cable cars, access is adapted for 'handisport customers.
