Description from the manager
If you have dreamed of living in a castle, but thought it could never happen in this modern world, think again! This incredible villa rental in Spain's Catalonia region is ready and waiting to make your dreams come true. Located near the Costa Brava, this holiday villa in Spain offers the best of both worlds – a laid-back, tranquil experience on site, but only a short distance from many extraordinary Catalan historic, cultural, and scenic sights and activities. You may want to sample many of the fresh veggies, seafood, spices, and wines for which Catalan is famous, but we recommend that you take advantage of the facilities at this Spain... villa, and settle in on top of the tower in the lookout area for morning coffee, or an evening glass of wine. Enjoy the 360 degree panoramic view while watching the sun rise or set, or wait for later in the evening, when the stars come out and seem to be within your reach.
This historic 11th century ‘Castle of Ladders’, listed on Spain’s register of historical monuments, has a round tower from the 11th century surrounded by 14th century square fortifications. From the lookout atop the medieval tower, 360 degree panoramic views stretch all the way to the Pyrenees Mountains where they meet the Mediterranean coast and the French border. The property offers a large paved stone terrace with plenty of chairs, tables, and protective umbrella for outdoor dining. The private pool has a pool house with a shower and bar. There are more tables and chairs positioned on the grass along the fortification walls, offering views of the valley and hillsides below. Entry into the castle is either through curving stairs around the outside of the castle, or through the middle of the tower. There are lush gardens and trees surrounding the entire hilltop property.
[1200 m2]
Ground floor: To the left of the entryway, there is a large kitchen with double ovens and a microwave, granite countertops, breakfast nook with seating for six, and a laundry area with washer/dryer and ironing area. A large door leads outside to a lovely al fresco dining area, where you will catch the scent of the lemon tree and herbs growing nearby. Double doors lead from the kitchen to the main dining room, which seats up to 20 people. There is an entrance in this dining room to the castle’s wine cellar. A small gallery that contains paintings and works of art is also on this level. A half bath with washbasin and toilet can be found on this floor.
First floor: Off of the large entrance hall, there is a second large kitchen with breakfast nook and seating for four, 2 separate spacious dining areas, and a library with fireplace and roman arch window. There is a roomy main living room with a large fireplace, and comfortable leather furniture. Next to this is a smaller sitting area, complete with games. Bedroom #1 is here as well, and contains a standard double bed [140m], with full en suite bathroom including shower, tub, washbasin, and toilet. Bedroom #2 is next door, and has two single beds, which can be joined together to form one 180 cm king-size bed. A half bath, with washbasin and toilet, are adjacent to this bedroom, but it shares the shower/tub of Bedroom #1. The caretaker's wing can be accessed from the inside of the building through a door on the open passage way.
Second floor: The remainder of the bedrooms and baths are on this level. Bedroom #3 has a standard double bed [140m], and full en suite bathroom, with shower and tub, washbasin, and toilet. Bedroom #4 has two single beds, which can be joined together to form a king-size bed upon request. There is an en suite bathroom with shower and tub, washbasin, and toilet. Bedroom #5 has a 160 cm queen-size bed, and en suite bathroom with shower and tub, washbasin, and toilet. Bedroom #6 and Bedroom #7 both have standard double beds [140m], and en suite bathroom with shower and tub, washbasin, and toilet. On this level, there is also a spacious living area with TV and American DVD/VHS players, 54 available movies, a CD player, and a small bar. From the living area, a door leads into the center of the tower, and a peaceful meditation room. It is across the meditation room to the tower’s inner staircase where you will climb to the third floor.
Third floor: At the top of the staircase is a round library, with a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. In the center of the library is a spiral staircase. This takes you to the top of the tower, where you will exit onto a private area offering an uninterrupted view of the Pyrenees Mountains and the Catalan countryside.
This stunning castle is located at the center of northeast Catalonia’s ‘Golden Triangle’, the spectacular area that stretches between Begur, Girona, and Sant Feliu. This Costa Brava stretch of Spain is well known for its temperate climate, lush vegetation and woods, and spectacular cliffs, outlined against the tranquil beaches and the blue and green immensity of the sea. Equidistant from the Mediterranean Sea and the snow-capped mountains of the Pyrenees, this property near Celra offers the best of Spanish Catalan and the Costa Brava. Take a 5 minute walk down the hill from the castle into Celra, where you can visit the grocery, butcher, bakery, or fishmonger, shop for other regional specialties, such as olives and espadrilles, and frequent the weekly produce market. The castle also borders the Cavarres Nature Preserve, where you will be serenaded by cuckoos and nightingales. Also within an easy drive of 30 minutes or less is the town of La Bisbal, with its ceramic/pottery center; Figueres, home of the Salvador Dali museum and estate; Girona, the historic medieval walled city with its ancient cathedrals; and Costa Brava’s Mediterranean Coast, with secluded coves, white sand, kayaking, and fresh seafood. It really was a castle and had great features like a medieval dining room and a courtyard. Jules, the caretaker, was awesome and hooked us up with great tours in the area. The kitchen was well outfitted.
The location was next to a little town with no cute places to eat or grocery stores. The town did not provide any entertainment for our group.
Easy day trips to the Costa Brava, hillside towns and wine tasting.
All-in-all a wonderful trip. The castle is huge, with many areas to hangout. Plenty of room for everyone. They had thought of everything - beach towels, market baskets, places to eat. Best bathrooms we've every had abroad. All were stocked with hairdryers, which is unheard of. The cook was a delight. We had them cater one meal, and it was exceptional.
It would have been nice to have had access to the pool area from the dining room. There was a passageway, but it was not open.
The beaches were spectacular. Also loved Girona, Pals, and Figuera, not to mention Barcelona, where we had been before, but enjoyed again. My son-in-law rented a bicycle and probably saw more of the countryside, close-up, than any of us.
