      Spartan chic

Left on 03/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We (wife, myself & 2 dogs) were looking to get away for the weekend. I found this cabin and thought it would be a good fit. Well it wasn't horrible but I would call it spartan at best. If you were getting ready to go into minimum security prison this would be a good start.
The furniture in the common room was This End Up style. Crate like and not comfortable, that's why it is found in dorm rooms and firehouses across the country. The bed on the other hand could not have been found in another place. I'm pretty sure the pads in our dogs crates were thicker and more comfortable. The floors are concrete and there is one rug by the door and maybe one in the bathroom ie: cold floors. The bathroom was small with a 2 x 2 shower, mismatched towels and no shelves to put anything on. The kitchen stole the show. Nice fridge, oven and fairly well stocked it seemed.
Although advertised as fenced in, it is not, there are farm gates that have no wire on them and passages underneath that I could get through.
I have stayed in state and national park cabins that are nicer. Although the owners didn't come over and we saw them only a few times outside the cabin is not private. We rented two nights and left after one.
      Beautiful view from the property

      David Johnston

      Owner

Thanks to "Spartan Chic" for enabling us to more clearly spell out who we are and what our wonderful Lexington VA Cabin has to offer.
Dixon cabin is a preferred getaway for guests who recognize cleanliness, value, and don't need or want to pay for the trimmings of a resort.
We specifically built this as a getaway for folks like us..... Teachers with "teacher salaries" who want an exceptional, budget minded, clean getaway.
Canoeists, kayakers, hikers and bicyclists who frequent the area who want an affordable cozy nights getaway.
No other Lexington Virginia Cabin Rental offers our views, cleanliness, and prices.
The floors of Dixon Cabin are highly polished (very expensive) concrete......like a lot of counter tops these days.....Clean, shiny, Nice.
While the Shower does not have grab bars installed, it is a very spacious 36" x 36". The shower head is at 7+ feet with good pressure. A window is just to the side as you enter and exit. Bright white, and cheery.
Our Towel sets might not match, but they are not "Spartan".
Dixon Cabin is on an 80 acre farm well off of the highway, and our private residence is 400' away with 200 plus trees planted between. Some are still at nursery stage, but some are 20 to 30 feet tall.
My wife and I live on site, do not have children, are very quiet, and are going to leave you alone, unless you need us.
The fence around Dixon Cabin is Woven Wire farm fencing and the area is 2 1/2 acres. Areas under gates and fences where a dog might slip through have been secured with "green-no-climb" fence panels. This isn't to say that "an escape artist" won't find a way out, or that a guest won't find passage underneath that they could get through, but on an 80 acre farm without a nearby road or traffic, your pet isn't in harms way, and most guests probably won't be sliding under the fence network.
I (David) personally selected the mattresses, as I have some back pain. I've gotten the best nights sleep that I have ever had on these mattresses. We bought one for our private residence. (You simply cannot make everyone happy where a mattress is concerned).
The furniture is "This end Up" crate furniture, with slip covers that we launder and change out routinely......great for a firehouse or a dorm.....or our residence......or a clean Cabin rental near Lexington Virginia. Clean and Spartan, but comfortable. When you walk in, it smells Garden Fresh.
There is a stainless steel shelving unit in the bathroom.
In short, this ain't the Hilton, but it is New, Clean, Fresh, has great views, is private, and is priced right.
We bend over backwards to keep it clean, and to make sure your stay is quiet and comfortable.
      -Dave

      Fantabulicious

Left on 01/10/2013 for a stay in December 2012

Windymile Cabin is beautiful, clean, well equipped, comfortable and gorgeous. The surrounding farmland and mountain views draw you outside into the quiet of the present moment. The fire pit is perfectly positioned and easy to manage with benches and chairs surrounding. With 2.5 acres of private property, my dog, Grace had lots of places to run, new and interesting scents to sniff and cows to taunt. The landlord, David was brilliant with his generosity and humor and music and assistance... I had car trouble and he kindly led me to a wonderful mechanic and then performed a concert at a local coffee house, a diverse man. He and his wife audrey have a created a perfect holiday retreat that is soothing to the soul and restorative to the mind.

      Thank you, Susan F

      great value!

Left on 01/19/2012 for a stay in October 2011

This is a wonderful place for just about any kind of traveler. Quietly tucked away yet still close enough to so many things. Cabin is clean and comfortable, although the beds are a bit lacking. Furniture is more dorm like than hotel but it still works well and you'll find just about everything you'll need. Great place for kids and pups!! The cabin is surrounded by 3 fenced acres so there is room to safely roam- but I would keep an eye on smaller dogs as they might be able to slip through.
We plan to stay again and will bring our dogs next time. Can't wait to sit around the outdoor fireplace and toast some'ores!
Suggestion: a shelf in the bathroom for toiletries and a mirror in the bedrooms would be nice:)

We stayed at Windymile Cabin on two separate nights and were not disappointed. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed and the 2.5 acre fenced pasture was a blast for our 4 dogs to run around in and explore. The views are just amazing and there is no way you can't just relax in the peaceful setting. Definitely going back to explore more of the beautiful Goshen Pass area and eclectic city of Lexington... plus, the dogs are looking forward to barking at the cows again :)

Very enjoyable stay. Everything was as advertised plus! Very clean and comfortable. It's so peaceful. David mentioned the possibility of fencing an area around the cabin which I think is a great idea! I traveled with 3 small dogs (all under 9 pounds). Definitely would go back again.

      Beautiful views, relaxing and peaceful

Left on 08/09/2011 for a stay in August 2011

The cabin is clean and comfortable, but the views out the windows are the best--rolling hills and fields close up with a herd of cattle in the next field, and beautiful mountains in the distance. It's very quiet and peaceful, well off the beaten path. Our dogs had a great time in the 2 fenced acres, and we enjoyed watching them. We didn't partake of many of the local attractions as we were more interested in just relaxing and this is the place to do it! Much of our time was spent on the covered patio just enjoying the sights. We did spend one night out at Hull's drive-in theater and that was lots of fun.

We stayed at Windymile for a VMI graduation. It is conveniently located close to Lexington and has a stunning location with a kitchen and more space than a motel room. The hosts were great. If David had been renting Windymile prior to this spring we would have rented it for our numerous VMI trips to attend functions & visit our cadet.

I stayed at Windy Mile with my husband and 7 month old baby. We had a great time exploring the area and enjoyed the fantastic views from the cabin. We thouroughly agree with another review, they are some of the most beautiful views we have seen in Shenandoah.

This may not be a luxury break for some, but the cabin was clean and had all we needed. The Johnston's were great hosts and we hope to be back to visit them again next time we are in the USa.

We stayed in this cabin in October, and it is a perfect setting for enjoying the changing leaves and beautiful views. The cabin itself was cozy and comfortable, and includes everything to make yourself at home. There is a well equipped kitchen and two bedrooms for privacy.

This is a great place for outdoor activity. We had a great cookout and bonfire all night. The views of the mountains are spectacular - we just relaxed and took in all the natural beauty.

I would definitely recommend staying at WindyMile Cabin.

Three acres fenced for the dogs with kennel services available ; outdoor fire pit with more wood than you need and a night sky with more milky way than you remember; Goshen Pass is 5 minutes away; and you can always go into Lexington proper for sightseeing!

Windy Mile Cabin is set off the "main" road on an expansive plot of land. Sunset views are unbelievable. There is room for children to frolic, dogs to run around, and grown ups to sit and relax. The hosts, Dave and audrey, are about as real as it gets. Friendly, down to earth, and full of knowledge about the local points of interest. The cabin is comfortable and well appointed. Book your getaway now. You won't be disappointed!

Relax & Recharge in RockBridge County Va

Left on 03/21/2011 for a stay in October 2010

We sometimes yearn for the ups and downs of hills that you can't find living in coastal North Carolina. Last fall we decided to explore scenic RockBridge county Va and spent 3 nights at WindyMile. What a great time it was. Plenty of privacy on the Johnston farm during the stay. Beautiful sunrises to greet you every morning and a wonderful sunset every evening. All the hiking, climbing and riding you could ask for. The cabin itself was spotless and had everything you need for a short stay or a much longer one. Plenty to do in nearby Lexington and/or Charlottesville. Dave and audrey are priceless.

Awesome! Great Family Getaway for Us!

Left on 03/15/2011 for a stay in September 2010

My family and I have stayed at Windy Mile two times now and we cannot seem to get enough. It was exactly like we imagined. A quaint, peaceful getaway whose location was perfect for us. We could easily get to a great hike, drive to nearby Lexington, take our labs for a swim or experience some great fly fishing - all within small distances. But we were nestled in a very quiet and beautiful spot - seemingly "away from it all".

We were met by the Johnston's as if we were dear relatives visiting for a holiday dinner. In this day of no customer service and lack of attention to detail it is comforting to know there are still places one can go where people care. But the attention was not overdone. The proprietors were friendly, attentive but not overbearing. But, when we inquired if they would visit with us, they did so, along with great stories about the area and an original song or two around the campfire!

The surroundings were simple and pure and gave us a sense of really being in the country. Not sitting in a luxury room looking through a balcony window at the mountains. Rather, we could actually feel the breezes from nearby Butte, pet friendly cows, build an awesome bonfire while sitting for hours staring at some of the most beautiful views I have seen in the Shenandoah.

Our family highly recommends Windy Mile.
