Lisbon, Costa de Lisboa, Portugal
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
The apartment is situated right in the middle of Alfama, just 2 minutes walk down some steps from the marvellous "Portas do Sol" viewpoint, one of the best known areas of Alfama due to its wonderful view of the area towards the river.
From this area it is just a 5 minutes walk to the "Sé", which is Lisbon's Cathedral and 10 minutes to the Castle of São Jorge.
The Beco do Garcês street is pedestrian only, but we offer cheap parking only for our guests at the Alfama car park accessible from the "Largo das Portas do Sol" street.
The area contains many traditional cafeterias, bars and restaurants, as well as the small village-type shops typical of Alfama.
NOTE: This is a 2nd floor apartment in an old traditional area of central Lisbon, where the buildings don't have lifts/elevators and is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility problems.

BucharestCharming!
Left on 07/19/2012 for a stay in July 2012
I loved the place! Simply loved it! Small, cozy, well equipped - this is what you probably expect. Great location, well connected to important landmarks of the city - this is what you can see on the map. But what you can experience only if you live there (even for a couple of days, as I did) is the community sense that is - in my humble but well travelled opinion - the distinctive feature of Lisbon. You can bask in the sounds of alfama - canaries, children singing, guitars playing, bells telling, chimney wind turbines humming and buzzing. Neighbors are kind - and helpful (especially when you lock yourself out :)) A word of warning: the stairs of the house are steep, and getting to the main street involves climbing up (or down). If your knees don't cooperate or you pack heavily, don't go there - but then you will miss such a wonderful place!

A recommander. -

An excellent little one bedroom (with pullout to sleep 3/4) in the heart of alfama. Mere steps from puerta de Sol, this location will not disappoint. Roger, Joanna and team were courteous, attentive and a pleasure to work with.
Felt like home away from home.

We've just come back from a short holiday in Portugal during which we spent 3 nights in this great apartment before moving on to the coast. Roger was very helpful both prior to our arrival and with a query whilst we were there. The apartment is very clean, beautifully decorated and well-equipped - we loved the bed both for its appearance and its comfort and the air-conditioning was a boon for a stay during hot weather. We also loved the huge velux window which we could open and look out of at the great view. Being in the midst of things in alfama I had worried about street noise at night but everything went quiet at a reasonable time and we didn't hear anything and slept extremely well. Being situated down one of the alleyways there's no traffic noise either! It's just a short walk away from one of the best viewpoints in the city, Largo das Portas do Sol, where the really useful tram route 28 also passes through. The Sao Jorge Castle is also a short distance away up the hill and the whole of the city seems easily accessible by public transport. We had our best meal sitting outside a tiny cafe in alfama which seemed to be used by locals more then tourists. Unfortunately we can't remember exactly where it was but the sardines and salad were just wonderful and so reasonably priced. You really can't go wrong staying here unless you can't manage steps! We'd highly recommend this apartment and would happily stay here again if we should ever return to this fascinating city with it's very welcoming, friendly people.

We had a wonderfull time in the apartment in Lisbon.
The apartment was absolutyl incredible. The location is perfect; right in the center of Lisbon on district and just a walk away for all the major attractions. The parking is very easy since there's a private auto parking just few minutes from the apartment. The aparment was very clean and well furnished.
We tried to find something wrong to say about the apartment but we werent able to.
The manager has an attention and a devotion that is far above compare to what I've ever seen.
We thank Lisbon apartment a thousand times for making our stay in Lisbon an epic memory.

We were in Lisbon for 3 nights and the appartment was in the perfect location for getting about and seeing the sites. Situated near the castle (10mins walk) & tram stops (2 minutes) to get you around the city. The appartment is very compact but beautifully clean with all the facilities (inc hairdryer) for your stay. There a cooker and washng machine too if you should wish to use it but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. We really enjoyed our stay in Lisbon - great city. Part of the expreience was staying in an appartment rather than a hotel. It really felt like we were one of the locals! Perhaps the only consideration to make is that the stairs to the appartment were quite steep if you are carrying large suitcases and the ceiling in the bed room is quite low so watch your head! The owner was very kind and also offered us an extended check out time to enable us to refresh & change before out flight home. Nice touch! Will definately stay again if we come to Lisbon again.

The apartment is beautiful located (no cars, only "Fado-Sounds), the facilities are very good and offer everything you would expect at this size. It is small but is ample for a city break. The handling is perfect and very nice and easy!
From here we have explored Lisbon for three days and have felt very comfortable! -

We loved our stay in Roger's apartment! So close to everything and fantastic views over alfama and the river.
Clean and cosy with everything you need for a stay in Lisbon. Apart from my husband's repeated bashing of head on the bedroom ceiling (after the first time, it surely was his fault?) it was a thoroughly comfortable stay! -

Step back in time with a stay in alfama where a good pair of walking shoes and/or cheap taxis will whisk you anywhere in Lisbon! A stay here is comfortable and a good value with a number of amenities including working Wi-Fi. Note there is no coffee machine, merely a percolator, and while the bedroom and living space were neat and tidy, more diligence would have been welcome in cleaning the bathroom and kitchen floors.

Left on 06/26/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We came to visit Lisbon from tuesday 31th may to thursday 1st june. We received mails before to organize our arrival and a very sympathic wife gave us the keys and showed us the appartment. The duplex is perfectly located in alafama. We only travel by walking or by train, and it's very easy from this starting point. It is quiet, neighboors are prevenant and there is not pub or restaurant with noise juste under. We used the kitchen to prepare our food and let some products we can't finish. The bed is perfect and the view is really agreable from the room. The duplex is clean and the equipments are efficient. There is plenty of agreable details so we missed nothing. And by SMS, we needed to find deposits after we left, and Roger gave us information. We recommand this appartment to our family and friends because it is really a good surprise. Frédéric and Soizic

Left on 06/23/2011 for a stay in May 2011
For our first time in Lisbon we wanted to stay in an apartment, and found this one to be well located, cosy and clean - exactly what we were looking for.
Roger was very helpful at check in, and was flexible with our difficult flight times! It was good to know that if we'd needed help at any point during the week there was someone we could ring who would be able to give assistance. As it was, everything went swimmingly - no problems with the apartment (except my husband banging his head on the low bedroom ceiling a few times!), a great location, friendly neighbours, and easy check in and out.
In short, we had a great stay in this lovely apartment - we would definitely recommend this to friends. -

We stayed here for 2 nights on 10th and 11th June. Roger met us very promptly and was very helpful - it's a lovely way to start off your stay when the owner is genuinely friendly and happy to welcome you.
The apartment is located a minute below the relaxed bustle and cafes of the Portas Do Sol viewpoint, and fabulous world of tram 28. Being in the alfama this place is of course on a hill and has steep stairs - it was fine for us but someone with bad knees or hips could struggle. Anyone coming to Lisbon who's done any sort of research should already know it's a hilly city though. The apartment is situated in a traffic-free area. You can hear birdsong at certain times of day, and then just the neighbours going about their business and tourists passing through. It's a lovely, very recently and well restored typical alfama apartment, and there was a really nice, safe atmosphere both in the day and at night.
The apartment itself has a very well kitted out kitchen with everything you need, even cling film and foil. There is a small bathroom which again has everything you need. There is an adaptor (In the kitchen cupboard) for charging UK electric toothbrushes and razors. Good proper hairdryer as well. The shower is not the biggest, again may be a problem for someone with limited mobility. I say this as someone who used to have severe back problems. The bed is amazing - in the top 2 I've ever slept on, the other being in a £500/night safari lodge so it really is exceptional. It's a 7ft diameter round bed and Roger and Paula really have gone for quality here. There is also a proper velux blind on the window to keep the sun and heat out, and a very good air conditioning system - for once not above the bed so you don't end up with an icy blast as you sleep. And it's quiet so it won't keep you awake! The view out of the bedroom window is beautiful - taking in Sao Vicente Church to the left and sweeping views of the Tagus and alfama below. I am told by my boyfriend that if you open the velux fully, you can get a lovely tan indoors while your partner is getting ready to go out! There is a load of info in the TV cabinet including maps and info, even down to where to buy tickets and where the nearest supermarket is. There are lovely wooden floors throughout.
A couple of things worth noting:
Ceiling height in the bedroom is low - it is in an attic. The centre of the room is normal height but the size of the bed means you tend to walk in the sloped areas. Not perhaps quite so good for those of you over 6'1.
Judging by previous experience, daytime and distance to the nearest bars, this is an idyllic quiet spot where you just hear the residents going around. However if you come in festival season, be prepared!!! The alfama was throbbing with life the 2 nights we were there for the festival of St anthony, which culminated this year on the 12th with parades, more parties and just full on celebrations. It was a brilliant experience with impromptu bars and barbecues on nearly every street corner. The smell was absolutely beautiful with probably hundreds of sardines and chouricao being cooked in every direction. The place was buzzing with the sounds of street parties and live music, so we decided to join in and had a fantastic time. Some of the partying down the hill went on until 4:30am though which did keep my boyfriend awake when we turned in. However this is not the nor. I've been to Lisbon 3 times and have never seen alfama and Portas Do Sol like this. Just check your dates first - but in our case it was a brilliant surprise and just added to the experience of being in this beautiful, vibrant city.
My only gripe with cleanliness was down the side of the shower - it just needs someone to take a pipe cleaner to it. The rest of the flat was immaculately clean. Roger was on hand if we needed anything and we would recommend this place to able bodied friends and family without hesitation. -

We had a lovely stay in Lisbon and the apartment was perfect for our needs. Roger was a great host, very helpful with our tricky departure time, and gave us all the information we needed.
The apartment is perfectly located, just a couple of minutes walk away from the trams, and only a ten minute walk into the very centre of the city. Lovely apartment, very clean – low ceilings upstairs but wasn’t really a problem as we got used to stooping. Having a washing machine in the apartment was extremely useful, and everything we needed was provided. We don’t have a bad word to say about it! -

Three of us stayed in the alfama apartment and had such a wonderful time we'll be back for sure! Roger met us in the pouring rain (what a great host!) and checked us in swiftly, showed us around and gave us a few tips.
The apartment was spotless and had everything you'd need no matter if you were there a night or a month. It is quite small, and the main bedroom has a low ceiling but at 5'11 I managed ok - besides you are staying in the same kind of accomodation as the little old men and ladies of Lisbon.
The main square is within walking distance and the trams stop 30 seconds away at a small square with a great little outdoor cafe/bar with the best panoramic views. There's also plenty or cute resturants and shops etc nearby and the castle a short stroll up hill.
We loved our apartment and will be back to Lison for sure. We were so impressed we've even looked at realestate there for a holiday home!
If you consider this apartment just book it - you'll be impressed and Roger won't let you down! -

Dear Oliver,
Thanks very much for your comments.
I am very sorry I wasn't able to meet you personally - normally I do all the check-ins myself but on this occasion it simply wasn't possible for me, as I explained to you before you arrived when I sent you all the arrival instructions by email. I also informed you that our assistant, Judite, would be doing the check-in and that she only spoke Portuguese, but that you could call me on my mobile phone if you needed anything or if there were any problems.
Since I didn't receive any call, I assumed everything was OK, and you were also able to do an early check-out at 6am with no problems.
Also, if you had called about the leaking pipe, we would have immediately sent our maintenance man to repair it, but I'm glad you were able to do the repairs yourself, and at the moment it's working fine.
But in any case, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and the apartment.
best wishes, Roger.

Views from the open skylight were excellent. Great if you want to get off the beaten tourist. Not recommended unless you can climb stairs.
