Apartment 37 is wonderful flat located on the 3rd floor of a building, without elevator, from the 18th century, at Alfama one of the oldest parts of Lisbon.
It is decorated with a mixture of modern and ancient, and it is full of sunlight that you can enjoy from inside or relaxing in one of the 2 terraces, while having a glance of the river, or seeing the cats sleeping on the roofs of the medieval neighborhood.
The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighborhoodsof Baixa and Chiado. Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, high standard shops (at Chiado) and access to the train to the beaches... around Cascais (Cais do Sodré).
The apartment has 110 m2 and It has been recently renovated to include the following:
two bedrooms with double beds (140 cm wide), one of them with access to one of the terraces;
one bedroom with 2 bunk beds;
a living room with sofa/bed (140 cm wide) with satellite TV, DVD player and Hi-Fi and access to one of the terraces;
a small room with a double sofa bed and a window opened to the kitchen;
a complete kitchen with electric oven and stove, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, washing machine and also dish washer. The window between the kitchen and the room has a table with place to sit 8 persons;
a complete bathroom with bathtub;
division with shower;
two terraces with a beautiful view over Lisbon's roofs and river Tejo.
In wintertime the apartment is heated with electric and gas heaters.
Wireless internet connection available for those who have their own laptop with Wi-Fi compatible equipment.
We will welcome you with a bottle of wine.
There are several apartments in Alfama, the neighborhood of apartment 37. it is the medieval Moorish neighborhood where an emerging cosmopolitanism mixes with the “natives” day-to-day life. It is a village in the heart of the city, due to the fact that most of Alfama’s residents have lived here their entire lives and retain a strong sense of community.
Alfama was first settled by the Romans and Visigoths and was an important Jewish neighborhood in the 15th century, but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (al hamma means springs, a reference to the hot springs used as baths until the 17th century). It is crowned by São Jorge castle, which was built by the Visigoths in the 5th century and enlarged by the Moors in the 9th century.
Be surprised by Alfama's narrow cobblestone alleyways, stairs and squares, built on a rock-hill that was responsible for its survival after the big 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the medieval city. A walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time.
It is an ideal place to explore hidden places, stunning views over the city, the river Tejo, restaurants, fado houses, or even to dance and eat sardines during the popular June festivals. Here you can find numerous little grocery shops, taverns and small restaurants - most having no more than 3 tables. At the edge of the Alfama, Lisbon's renowned flea market, the Feira da Ladra, is held in the Campo de Santa Clara every Tuesday and Saturday.
Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolónia train station which houses stylish design shops, restaurants and bars, like the famous "Lux".
You are also very close to theFado and Portuguese guitar Museum: Situated at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro. It is a place where you can have a historical visit through the most the traditional Portuguese music-Fado- and famous Portuguese fado singers like Amalia Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo and Mariza. During the summer thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) you can dinner in a small square of the museum and listen to Fado, live! A night program you certainly won’t miss!
Another astonishing building next dor to the apartment isCasa dos Bicos (House of Facets). It was built in 1523 at the time of king Manuel I and is faced with diamond-shaped stones, probalby influenced by the Italian renaissance.
If you decide to go further up, passing Alfama you will find an astonishing view of the city from Miradouro da Graça or from the one where is the church of St. Maria do Monte da Graça. You will also be able to visit a Spanish barroque style monastery S. Vicente de Fora (mark of the Spanish domination of Portugal until 1640).
From this apartment you can explore the rest of the city walking to the castle (S. Jorge) or to Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado or Santa Clara.

We really liked this apartment. It was clean and extremely conveniently situated. The two terraces where a great place for relaxing and watching the rooftops. It's not a hyper trendy or cool place, but it is just homely, full functional and really pleasant. Not the most modern of apartments, but we felt it fitted our style perfectly. Not good for elderly or disabled as very steep stairs to access it. Read more

We enjoyed our stay in alfama. Leave the windows open at night at
night and you can hear the Fado restaurants on the streets below.
Apartment was clean and spacious. Note that it is 60 steps up from the street
(I counted) good exercise. We easily walked into Chaido and Barrio alto, and the appalonia train station. Read more
Than you for your review, we are thrilled you enjoyed the apartment and your time in London.
Indeed, this apartment has an amazing atmosphere, even more at summer time listening to fado shows from restaurants nearby!

Best place I have been staing. About 25 min walk to the center. Taxi is about 3,5€ to the center. Beach is not so near about 30 min walk and 40 min in train. Really good for friends having a good time. But I think it's even better for couples and families. Good restaurants right at the downstairs. No clubs nearby, so you can sleep your nights in peace. Also there is a small grocery store, about 5 min walk, almost on the other side of the fado museum. Read more

I have never been out of the United States and one thing I like about staying in the apartment was the location. It was great to look out the window and observe city life in Portugal. The apartment was comfortable and we had plenty of room. The washer and dryer was a wonderful additive. The gentleman who checked up in nice and asked what we were there for and interested in. He mentioned several sites as well as added a few we didn't know. The apartment was clean and I loved looking out the many windows. Read more

Living in alfama for some days
gave us a taste of the real Lisbon.
With the sights , railroadstations and shopping just an inspiring 20 minutes walk or taxitrip away the location is excellent.
Thxs also to TTL staff which helped us with the small things that came up faster than using the concierce on a hotel.

comfortable inside but dangerous in the hall!

The apartment was spacious, very clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. However, there were no lights in the hall, and the agent did not fix the problem even after repeated calls. I am in my 60's and it was dangerous trying to find my way up and down three flights of stairs in the pitch dark. We had guests on a number of occasions and everyone had a hard time managing the stairs in complete darkness. In american that would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. additionally, the internet did not work.
The stairs were unlit and the agency did nothing about it.

This apartment was lovely. It was clean, spacious, comfortable, and in a prime location.
But the internet did not work (we were attending a literary conference, and connection was very important). The company did not respond to this problem.
We informed them that the lights weren't working on the stairs (4 steep flights in the pitch black - very dangerous!!) and they said "we don't have a ladder". They never fixed the problem.
When I arrived, the prior tenants were still there, and the cleaners couldn't begin, so jet-lagged, I had to wander around for a few hours.
These problems say more about the rental company than the apt itself. If it were managed by a different agency I might try it again. I had much better experience with Vrbo. Read more
Thank you so much for taking the time to fill in a review about your stay with TravelingtoLisbon. I am happy that you found the apartment lovely and suitable for your stay.
As Quality Manager at TravelingtoLisbon I was a bit surprised by your comments regarding the internet and light in the corridor as the comfort of our guests is a priority to us. As I found it difficult to understand how we would ignore your requests, knowing that these would impact on the quality of your stay. I have spoken to my guest assistants, José and Mário, whom you dealt with regarding these issues, and they have updated me on the situation. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding our actions which I would like to explain.
On our procedures we do say that our check-in is from 4pm and check-out at 11am. Whenever possible we do let our guests in before but more importantly we commit to our check in time at 4pm, when the apartment has to be all clean and ready.
On check-in, realising that the “internet pens” we provide are not compatible with MAC, back in the office we found an interface that would and José went by to install it and to explain how to use it and left it working. The next day you called saying you could not log in and it was all explained to you, Inclusive Mario went round to the apartment to take you through it again but with no success as you were out. As we did not hear back from you we assumed that you had finally managed it and all was fine. There was never an intention on our part to not respond as our actions may prove.
Regarding the light in the corridor, like all buildings everywhere, the common areas are responsibility of the Condominium and maybe that was what was meant initially. We reported the fault to an electrician who guaranteed us was over the same day and that the light was fixed. Once again, we thought the matter resolved, but it may have failed again and we were not aware.
For all of these inconveniences I would like to apologise on behalf of TravelingtoLisbon, as obviously we take our guests very seriously and the quality of their stay is of utmost importance to us.
I hope you reconsider this appreciation of our company and we will be able to show you how we care, giving us the opportunity to welcome you again!!

Great location in the centre of alfama. But the taxi was not able to take us to the door because the streets are too narrow. We then got lost in the maze of little streets, although the apartment was very close to where we were dropped off at the Fado Museum. (Get directions from the Fado Museum to the door from TravellingtoLisbon)
The welcome was very good, with a lot of detail given about places we might be interested in visiting. The apartment was very pleasant, with a lovely balcony off one of the bedrooms where we took breakfast. The big problem for us: there are no windows that open to the outside in 2 of the 3 bedrooms - a problem if you like to sleep with the window open. Otherwise it was great.

We stayed in apartment 18 for a weekend in June 2011. The agent who greeted us was both punctual and helpful. The location was excellent. The apartment was well maintained and very spacious for five people. One minor issue was the leak that seeped out when showering in the main bathroom. This was a minor complaint to an otherwise pleasant weekend. We met a lovely cat christened "acid” for his ph scale sensitivity who we all wanted to take home because of his wise head and wry smile. The apartment was very easy to find and direct from the airport.
Mario was very helpful in helping us with the check in and provided us with some useful tips.
The apartment was a good size for our group (three of us travelled to Lisbon) and we all had a room each.
Only down side was the bathroom shower protector was not good and the water went everywhere. The rooms were also very hot at night and could benefit from a/C or a fan.
But overall a good vlaue flat for a short visit to Lisbon.

The appartment was very nice with a splendid view over alfama. The guy who met us in the appartment was very nice and gave us the needed information.
The narrow streets were full of small grosseries, restaurants and people. The portugues are nice and friendly people. I will defently visit Portugal again.
The dobble bed in the small room was not so good and the curtain was a very dusty. Read more

Our "travel group" had a wonderful time in Lisbon and part of the fun was apartment 37. Three flights of stairs at the end of a day of touring the sites of Lisbon, seemed a little intimidating at first. Sitting on the balcony, while the sun set, with family and friends sipping a little wine, overlooking Lisbon and the alfama community and the cooling breeze, was well worth the 59 steps to the apartment."59 Steps" became our mantra.
Thank you so much for your review and kind words.

I found out about "Traveling to Lisbon" from comments on a New York Times
I was quite impressed with how professional and easy all the arrangements
were. They were very responsive with email correspondence. Meeting Raul for
the keys for the apartment was easy and he was helpful and friendly. It was
great having an apartment for two nights in the Alfama district.
The advice about taxis was good, but it was too difficult for us to locate
departures to find a taxi - we just went to the arrival taxis. Read more

The apartment is nicely located in the old Alfama area and quiet. It was close to tramways and station.
The balcony was large enough to welcome 8 people, the living room and the kitchen were well-furnished.
It would have been useful to have 2 toilets.
One remark regarding the bed in the living-room: the spring bed was not confortable at all and we preferred putting the mattress on the floor... not convenient! Read more

We always try to provide a comfortable and relax stay to our guests, but it seems it was not your case.
The adjacent apartment is also managed by us and we inform guests that between 10pm and 8am is the quiet time, but unfortunately we cannot be there to see if the people respect the rules or not.
We are very sorry for the situation and we hope your next visit to Lisbon would be calmer.

Poor customer service

This apartment was nice and the location was close to downtown and sights, but the service we received was terrible. We called from the train to tell them we were coming and when, but the young man who received us arrived very late - a big deal when you're traveling with a large party and a small baby. When we complained, we got nothing but attitude from Alexandra Pauthier in the office and then a scathing e-mail that we should have called them and we should follow their rules. We did call them! Besides, we were paying customers. They should have been more accommodating and apologetic for their lateness. These people do not know the definition of customer service. There are other nice places to stay in Lisbon, so I suggest you look elsewhere. FYI, Alexandra's not-so-nice e-mail is below. Also FYI, we are frequent world travelers and have been to more than 25 countries on 6 continents. As such, we expect some minimum level of customer service!
If you can't, I don't ask you to understand our rules, that 99,9% of our customers fortunately understand an apreciate!
But I ask you to follow them! And it is written everywhere that you have to phone upon arrival.
If you did not want to follow the rules, you shoud have booked something else!
May be you are not used to travel, but this is the normal procedure everywhere. Trains and plains arrive late all the time. And it would be the minimum from you, to respect the rules and the work of the person who was receiving you. May be you shoud have come to our office to get the keys!

Thank you for your comments.
We would like to clarify this situation for our future guests:
When someone books an apartment with us, an automatic email with arrival instructions is created and sent to the guest.
In this same letter we have this exact sentence (and it is underlined):
'When you arrive at the airport, or half an hour before arriving in Lisbon, please contact us at +351 91 250 61 61. We will send someone to wait for you in the apartment, to who you shall pay the rest in cash.'
For the ones who usually travel, we know that, unfortunately, it is frequent to have a delay on the flight or even on the train trip and that is why we ask to call upon arrival in Lisbon (airport, train and bus station, etc.).
A simple phone call, upon arrival, would be enough to get a team member waiting for you.
As you have said on the email that we have received from you, after your phone call, we took 'twenty minutes or so after that'to be in the apartment. We were completely inside the 30 minutes we ask.
Procedures exist for the common welfare and as such we should respect them.
Our main goal is to provide an excellent stay to our guests and as my Director said 99,9% of them appreciates that.
