Eco friendly accommodation with a private terrace overlooking the fruit garden. Esthers Barn has two bedrooms and comfortably sleeps four people. An ideal base from which to explore the northern Lake district.
Southwaite Green is in an area of peace and tranquillity in the Lorton Vale, almost mid-way between Cockermouth and Lorton both 3 miles away, Keswick is 9 miles to the east. Within a short drive are the less frequented western lakes Crummock Water, Loweswater, Buttermere and Ennerdale, winner of Britains Best View. There is ample walking and cycling opportunities from the door and a wealth of shops and restaurants can be found in... both Cockermouth and Keswick.
The properties sit on Paddle Beck giving a peaceful ambience together with 10 acres of grounds including newly planted woodland, wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum. Consequently there is an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, red squirrels, badgers and the occasional heron that visits the beck, not forgetting the resident barn owl.
Southwaite Green is a development of four properties that have been constructed in 2007 by the owner, who lives on site, to an extremely high standard. The cottages have an abundance of local timber used by local craftsmen to retain the traditional character and wherever possible used the original timbers from the barn. They have been painstakingly converted using “green design and technologies” with ground and air source heat pumps to power the under floor heating beneath the slate and oak floors. A design feature has been the use of solar panels and the positioning of the windows to generate maximum solar heating to produce the heating and hot water. Great attention to detail has been paid to ensure that these are Eco-friendly properties, including organic bedding and towels, hand made furniture from sustainable sources and they have even gone to the extent of using Eco-friendly paints. The owners have gone to great trouble to ensure the properties have a low ‘carbon foot-print’ and to ensure your holiday is an enjoyable experience.
The development briefly comprises two, 2 bedroom cottages, Skiddaw and Esther’s Barn. Buttermere is a ground floor two bedroom cottage which is specially adapted for disabled use with mobility one and two rating and Beckside a three bedroom, three bathroom house. The properties have been given the much acclaimed Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme.
The cottage is ‘upside down style’, has under floor heating throughout and comprises:
* Double bedroom with en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC.
* Second double bedroom with en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC.

Excellent modern eco friendly house; underfloor heating needs careful use especially with the need, by the owner, to anticipate a cold snap 24 hrs ahead. Well kittec out, very comfortable house; alas the sofas were very low and difficult for older people. Great use of the surrounding land to good effect. Complex is well placed for the far west Lakes and close to Cockermouth which offers good, varied and enjoyable facilities.
Very happy to return. Read more

The directions to the cottage were clear and concise. We were pleased that the cottage lived up to our online view of it back in January. The owner met us shortly after arrival and was friendly. The cottage was comfortable and modern, we particularly liked the oak stairs and furniture which were made locally, even the coat rack by the door was inspiring.
The provision of some beer and chocolates on arrival was a nice touch although bread and milk might have been more practical.
The ECO kettle was a pain in the wrist - literally- for my wife, it was just as easy to fill a kettle with sufficient water for two cups of coffee! It was quite heavy to lift.
The instructions about the day to day running of the cottage were very good, although we already do recycle things at home so this was not new to us, although some comments in the visitors book suggested otherwise. As suggested, we attempted to walk into Cockermouth by the riverside footpath, we soon gave up after a few hundred yards of not very well defined footpath, barbed wire and flotsam and jetsam from the river
Parking and access were excellent. A good base to explore the North western Lake District but a bit of a trek if you needed to venture down to Coniston or Windermere. The nearby restaurant at Winder hall in Lorton was very good -friendly service and good food.
All in all comfortable, spacious accommodation.
The best holiday let yet!

We wanted a top notch cottage in an 'off the beaten track' location in the north of the lovely Lake District. Esther's Barn more than lived up to our expectations. Don't be mistaken into thinking that 'eco-friendly' means compromising on quality though. Everything was of the highest standard, from the modern design to the attention to detail in fixtures, fittings and equipment (down to the solar powered radio!).

Relaxing and comfortable stay

Spent 5 days staying in Esthers Barn with my husband,my son and his lovely new wife. The barn was spotless and we loved the furnishings and furniture. The open plan gave it a spacious feeling. We especially liked the fact that each bedroom had it's own en-suite. The location was ideal for us as we enjoy the Northern part of the Lake District and the journey into Cockermouth or Keswick was not a problem and we ate in most evenings. The kitchen was extemely well equipped and cooking was not a chore. Although there are three other properties on site, that was never a problem, we didn't even see the other guests until departure day.
Altogether it was a lovely, relaxing experience and we will certainly visit again.
