Washington, DCSimple elegance makes for a relaxing stay in the heart of London
Left on 05/06/2012 for a stay in March 2012
Our family of 3 stayed in the Neal Street flat for five nights in March 2012. The flat was everything we were looking for and exactly as advertised: very clean, appealing, great shower, comfortable bed, and workable kitchen. The roof deck is a wonderful bonus and great place for a glass of wine in the early evening. The central location makes taking the tube or bus simple, but we also walked many places-including two blocks to the theater to see Matilda.
Mattie was a dream to work with and made us feel welcomed and at home. Arrival was simple, and she was careful to show us how everything worked, including the keys, so that we had absolutely no problems throughout our stay. Mattie directed us to the nearest grocery and best coffee shop to help get us started.
We highly recommend the flat! It is ideal for two, and workable for a small family of three.

66a Neal st was all and more we hoped for. We loved it here. Perfectly positioned in the heart of London, walking distance to everything. No more than 10 minutes walk to Trafalgar Sq. We only used the Underground to get there and back from the airport.
The property is very comfortable, very quiet, lovely and warm (we stayed in winter) and the bonus is the rooftop terrace! Table and chairs and a delightful view over rooftops and a big sky!
We ate almost every night at "Food for Thought" all of 50 meters away and did very well shopping in Neal st! Marks and Sparks is at the end of the street for all groceries.
The property is so central yet we found it so quiet as well.
This really was the ideal base for our 2 weeks and was a fabulous stay!
London is the place to be, 66a Neal st is the place to stay! -

MelbourneThe best place to stay in london
Left on 01/08/2012 for a stay in December 2011
It was a pleasure dealing with Mattie and anca who made the whole business of going about renting a flat in London from Melbourne so easy. Gaining access at 8.30 on a Sunday morning was beyond the call of duty. The flat itself was airy and well heated, well appointed and laid out, with all the necessary equipment for a comfortable stay in London, in winter. It was a great place, in probably the best location; certainly the most "happening place". The presence of so many restaurants and interesting shops in the laneways made this an especially memorable stay.

OsloPerfect place to stay in Covent Garden
Left on 12/09/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We are a family of four with two small children and were a bit excited if this apartment would fill our needs. All in all they did; enough space, exciting interior solutions which made it easy for the children to play and for us to move freely around, lovely bath with a charming backyard, quiet and inviting bedroom, practical kitchen. The location was superb for us with all we needed just few minutes away. What made the stay a bit troublesome was the stairways up to 3rd floor which is steep and narrow and made it unpossible to leave a trolley there- we had to carry it up and down each time. The neighbours beneath us obviously heard some of the sounds form the children playing so we had to calm them down regularly. Our oldest child slept in the main room and was not annoyed by the sounds from neal street during the evening/early night, but a light sleeeper might have problems with that. Our smallest child ( 20 months) had to sleep in our bed because of lack of room for a baby cot.
Because of the weather we did not use the roof terrace which however seemed a unique pearl in this central city area. It reminded us more of southern Europe cities than UK.
We were met by an assistent of Mattie who properly checked us in . In addition we had telephone contact with Mattie and felt well taken care of.Response from Mattie Silman - 12/10/2011
Owner
My apartment I admit is not the best for a family with small children and is most suited to a couple or a couple with an older child or three adults. This review seems to make the location sound a little noisy but it really is surprisingly quiet, especially the bedroom. See other reviews about this. So, no not ideally suitable for small children which is what I always tell guests before they decide to come. Mattie.

We enjoyed our stay at Neal Street. The location was fantastic, we enjoyed being able to walk out the front door and be in middle of restaurants, cafes, shops and the train station very close by. The roof top terrace was great on a sunny day and the apartment was very stylish and clean. Mattie was extremely friendly. We would love to return soon.

Left on 06/13/2011 for a stay in May 2011
I spent 7 nights at this delightful apartment in the heart of Covent Garden - it was terrific. Fully self contained with everything you need and a dishwasher and washing machine, plus a delightful roof top terrace. Shame the weather wasn't warmer! The bedroom is luxuriously comfy and quiet with a great bed. 2 friends stayed on separate occasions and used the sofa bed in the lounge - one found the room noisy - overlooking Neal Street (but she is a bad sleeper) the other said it was no noisier than a similar night at home (Saturday) and she went back to sleep. We all loved the roof terrace! It is ideally suited for getting to or from Heathrow airport, being on the Piccadilly tube line, then a few minutes walk. I visited the Royal Opera House for a performance of the ballet Manon, and it was lovely to just stroll 'home' in a few minutes. I'd also planned to see War Horse but didn't allow for the public holiday - it was packed and I missed out! Shame, but still only a few minutes walk back. Do remember this beautiful apartment is at the top of the building and that means stairs, there isn't a lift. Thanks Mattie & Anca, I hope to return.

This is a wonderful flat for anyone wanting to be based in the West End near the theatres. It's very convenient to Covent Garden and Holborn tube stops. Flat has a bedroom facing the courtyard which is very quiet--unlike the bustle of Neal St. The roof terrace is a treat for relaxing outside. The flat is very clean and you are welcomed with fresh flowers and a bottle of wine. Definitely recommended!

Delightful to read these positive comments. It is always a real treat to get great reviews and really encouraging for us! We appreciate people taking time to write their impressions and I hope it gives more potential guests the confidence to book with us. I know how hard it can be when travelling to choose where to stay out of so many options. Hopefully you will choose us and find out for yourselves that Neal Street is as good as it sounds if not even better. We look forward to welcoming you soon..... Mattie

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay in Mattie's apartment in Covent Garden. The location is absolutely perfect and the apartment is stylish and comfortable. It is a smaller apartment but it's so pleasent and the rooftop balcony makes this place very special. We really enjoyed our stay and wish we could have stayed longer. We hope to stay here again in the future when we return to the exciting city of London. Thank you so much!

FremantleGreat apartment brilliantly located.
Left on 01/08/2011 for a stay in July 2010
My family stayed in this wonderful apartment in July 2010 and couldn't have enjoyed the experience more. It is very centrally located - about two blocks from the Covent Garden underground station in the street which runs along the adjacent M&S; store. As we were on the Picadilly Underground Line it meant we could take the tube from Heathrow upon landing, without any change of stations on the way, and alight directly at Covent Garden. The only problem was navigating our luggage out of the station.
Once there transport was very easy. We started by using the tube, but quickly shifted to one of the many buses which are available locally and which were a more enjoyable experience. It is also very easy to walk to many of the places in central Westminster: the Regent Street shopping precinct; Picadilly Circus; Covent Garden piazza; Leicester Square theatres; Bloomsbury museums. Buses easily took us to Waterloo, Nottinghill and Kensington, which were a little further afield.
It was very easy to eat while here. As we had a small boy with us we did most of our cooking at home. This was so simple. The apartment kitchen is well equipped and pleasant to use. The nearby M&S; food hall provided us with great meals every day. By British standards this was an expensive way to eat, I was told. But it was great value for money compared to what we spend at the supermarket each day in australia.
We found the street and its precinct to be very quiet overnight and in the mornings, which made for a pleasant start to each day. Shops in pretty Neale Street didn't open until around 10am, which meant that foot traffic was light until that time. Vehicle traffic, given the narrowness of the street, was practically non-existent day and night.
The apartment was very compfortable, and lovingly renovated. It's an old building, so there are some well loved patches. We had trouble with the plumbing while there, but the owner did much to try to fix it quickly. The bedroom is well sized for an inner city apartment, and the queen si zed bed comfortable. A sofa in the lounge room can double as another comfortable bed. We are a family of three, which suited the space of the apartment well. It would be possible to take 4 people, but you'd start to feel cramped pretty quickly.
This is not the place for you if you struggle with stairs. It's on the third floor of an old terrace building, so there are a number of steep flights of stairs to get you from the ground level to the front door. And then another short run of stairs from the front door to the hallway. We found that these caused us no trouble, other than when we were arriving or leaving with heavy suitcases (which were a pain wherever we went and were far more difficult to navigate in the tube stations than anywhere else).
The apartment's layout is ideal for a short term holiday rental. In climbing the last flight of stairs from the front door to the landing you find a small storage closet (which fit our suitcases for the week we were there). To the right was the bedroom and bathroom; to the left was the kitchen and lounge, as well as the flight of stairs which led to the rooftop terrace. The terrace is a pretty space, having a feel of Mary Poppins about it while being surrounded by so many chimneys. We made little use of it, but if you were with a group of adults who would like to spend their summer evenings relaxing with chatter and food, this would be terrific. Keeping its door open helped with air flow in the apartment, which was useful to us as we were resident in the height of summer.
There are a number of good eating places nearby, though we didn't have much opportunity to try them. Our favourite was an american-style burger bar (look for the bright red signs) on the way to the British Museum. This was fabulous - very much worth looking out for.
All in all a wonderful stay, and very comfortable. We'd stay again in a heart beat on any trip to London.Response from Mattie Silman - 01/12/2011

I am delighted to read this great review! We now have have a new power show so hopefully no more problems with plumbing. We did have a couple of guests who made rather a lot of noise which has disturbed our neighbours below. If guests are coming to party I am sorry but this is not the place for them. I guess this complaint is not bad being the first in three years but I have to request respectful quiet people in future. Thank you for your understanding. Mattie

Left on 11/10/2010 for a stay in October 2010
The apartment is in a wonderful location and has all necessary amenities. The welcoming wine and flowers were appreciated. The kitchen was perfectly adequate and well equipped and the washer and dryer were extremely useful. The living room was comfortable and reasonably spacious, the bedroom and bathroom were not. Both were cramped and a socket in the bathroom to plug in a hairdryer would be an asset as would a more powerful shower. Thicker, larger towels would be welcome. However, once we became accustomed to the inconveniences we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Response from Mattie Silman - 11/12/2010
Owner
This is the first I have heard from a guest about the bathroom and bedroom being cramped as our apartment is larger than many hotel suites in the area which are more expensive. I have taken notes about the socket in the bathroom and will see what we can do. We have had an issue with water pressure in the building but are getting this sorted now. The comments about the towels are noted and will be attended to. I am happy that the guests enjoyed their stay. Mattie

Left on 10/08/2010 for a stay in September 2010
I'm sure other reviewers have waxed poetic about how terrific this place is - from the full kitchen, the amazingly comfortable bed and generally how beautifully decorated the flat is, to how well situated it is to everything you want to see and do in London plus the bonus of a rooftop terrace. So I won't go into further detail - all top marks.
There was some minor confusion about both check-in and -out times, but all was resolved without strife. As we were later arriving than expected, we drove directly to the flat and for our 'trouble' we were greeted with flowers and bottle of wine - very nice!
We also managed to lock our passports in the safe (duh!), and Mattie had to make a trip into town to get them out - thank you!!!
The only aspect which does not get top marks is the shower - with my long hair, the water pressure wasn't enough to properly shampoo, so I needed to wash it in the bath (which also takes a while to fill). I also found it difficult to get a comfortable temperature in the shower - either seemed too hot or too cold, it didn't seem to have much middle ground. Having said all that, my husband had no complaints about the shower. And I certainly wouldn't let that prevent me from staying there again.
Looking forward to the next time, and perhaps a stay at Mattie's place in France.Response from Mattie Silman - 10/09/2010

This apartment is a great location in the heart of covent garden - walking distance to theatres, restaurants, supermarket etc, but because it is on the top floor it is also quiet. SingaporeCozy flat
Left on 04/21/2010 for a stay in March 2010
I spent three weeks staying in this flat while on a working trip. The flat is tastefully furnished but remains cozy. I felt like it was as close to home as I could get for the 3 weeks that I was there. All the necessary amenities were on hand - the washer/dryer, pots and pans for cooking, the oven and the microwave. There were even more than sufficient towels provided for the period of my stay. The wireless internet also worked flawlessly.
The location is great, being in the heart of Covent Garden and walkable to other parts of Central London. Marks & Spencer is just down the road if you're lazy to walk the 10-15 min to Tesco. There are also many good food places around, including the famous fish and chip shop just around the corner (at Endell St).
Many thanks to Mattie who warmly welcomed me (even with a vase of fresh flowers) and checked in with me later to make sure all was well. It helps to know that she's easily accessible by phone or email if you have any problems.
The only issue I had was the stairs. For a lone female traveller with a heavy luggage, it took me quite a fair bit of time to bring my luggage down the three flights of stairs which are quite steep. Also for travellers who have arranged for private airport transfers, you may wish to note that the drivers from the company I had engaged refused to pick me from the doorstep as the street is not open to vehicles. Not a good thing when it's raining and you're trying to get all your luggage to the next street to meet your driver (which was what happened to me).
Overall a great stay. My first choice if i return to London again.Response from Mattie Silman - 04/22/2010

Thank you Yiaying for your lovely review. I was really sorry to hear about the taxi and this is the first time I have heard of this. The street is open to vehicles. Taxis regularly come up the street so anyone should ask me for the phone number of a more obliging company who will also help guests bring their luggage down. I look forward to welcoming you back to Neal Street in the near future. Warm wishes, Mattie

Left on 12/05/2009 for a stay in September 2009
We spent 3 weeks here after the long journey from New Zealand. Our son joined us for part of the time and we found the location superb for our daily trips around London and further afield. The proximity of restaurants, theatres and tube stations plus the wonderful and varied shopping made this the best location we have ever used in our visits to the UK.
The same goes for the apartment. The stairs kept us fit and once we were in our "little bit of heaven" we could relax in comfort and great surroundingswih music, DVDs (thanks for your great collection Mattie - an example of the type of care and attention to detail evident throught the apartment) and great conversation. We used the rooftop terrace during the day (on the rare times we were home)and often in the beautiful summer evenings - just superb!
We were looked after well by Miguel on arrival, we were very weary, and appreciated his follow up call to see all was OK. Likewise we appreciated your follow up call and chat Mattie.
You got the balance just right as hosts - we knew were there and contactable but you were not at all intrusive - a real art.
We really loved our stay in your stylish and comfortable apartment with outside space and look forward to returning again. This will be our preferred accommodation in London from now on. We have recommended it to others including a NZ artist but hope it is always there for us too. -

Apartment is perfectly located a few blocks north of Covent Garden, on a pedestrian street that is busy by day but quiet by night. The living area is compact but well-appointed, with a dishwasher and washer-dryer all tucked into the well-arranged kitchen. We loved the rooftop deck, and wished we had friends to invite over and enjoy it with us. One warning: it is a third-floor (4th by US counting) walk-up, with 47 steps up to the apartment (but who's counting?).
