Additional Location Information
Covent Garden is special. No wonder it is so loved by locals and visitors alike. There are many central London neighbourhoods that are ideal for walking around in, but perhaps this is the best one of all to do so! Not only is this because the famous Piazza is now pedestrianised, but also because of the charm and beauty of the buildings all around. It was the very first public square in England in the 17th Century. Once the market traders that sold their wares here for hundreds of years were forced to find a new and larger location, these lovely buildings were fortunately kept and wonderfully re-done for our pleasure today. The fun, vibrant and noisy market atmosphere survives, however. It was in Covent Garden that Eliza Doolittle sold her flowers, till she was whisked off to the poshest part of London to work on that accent, and to be transformed into a Fair Lady!
Stroll around and enjoy the street performers that are allowed by law to perform here. Their showmanship and verve seem to increase year by year. There is always one or two that shock and delight you with their bravado and originality! The host of designer shops, bars, bistros and restaurants is outstanding, not to mention the street food on sale and smaller market-type stalls. There are many unusual small businesses and shops here too, and they are worth finding. The world famous Covent Garden Opera House has its home here, as does The London Transport Museum, which is truly a fun and interesting visit, for children and adults alike. There are some really wonderful old posters and cards on sale in the museum shop of the Tube of old. One forgets that the underground is hundreds of years old and still going strong!
But don’t worry about transport here. Or at the very most, just hop on a bus, if you like. A short walk or bus-ride will transport you to Trafalgar Square, Soho, Regents Street, and all of the West End theatres. There is quite a little selection of theatres in Covent Garden itself too, such as the Lyceum and the Aldwich. With so many wonderful central London neighbourhoods lying just beyond what more could you ask for? This is the ideal base to explore and take in all those sights and delights that you would never see from the inside of a tube-train.
