Description from the owner
Located in the Kingdom of Buleleng in North Bali, Villa Patria is located high in the hills overseeing the unspoiled volcanic coast of Lovina. Once a prosperous clove plantation, the Villa overlooks villages, emerald rice fields, lush forests, and rushing streams cascading to the Java Sea. Exquisite setting, beautifully landscaped and terraced gardens, infinity swimming pool, temples, architecturally unique residences furnished with a fine collection of Balinese art and antiques, renowned cuisine, all combine to make your visit to this largely undiscovered and blessedly remote part of paradise the memory of a lifetime. Left on 02/01/2013 for a stay in January 2013
A friend and i just spent two weeks at Villa Patria. Like everyone else who has written reviews, we could not speak more highly of our experience. In our case we were looking for a place to do some writing and research. John and his staff were exceptionally friendly and discrete as we spent hours writing on the beautiful verandah overlooking the valley to the sea and took numerous plunges in the infinity pool each day. The weather in the hills is far more mild than the heat down by the beach. Agus, the driver, took us down to Lovina when we craved a change of pace and a restaurant meal, although the meals provided at the villa were great and varied; even catering for my vegan tastes. John suggested a wonderful snorkelling excursion. I stayed in the smaller bedroom in a separate wooden building which is reached by ladder. The main house is superb and tastefully decorated. This is an ideal place to get away from it all and be looked after graciously and attentively. I want to go back!

PerthHoneymoon paradise
Left on 11/11/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We stayed here at the end of October for four nights on our honeymoon. From the moment I started liaising with John regarding our booking, I knew that this was going to be a very special part of our trip.
John was so helpful and friendly, even coming with the villa driver (Agus) to collect us from amed! The location of the villa is breathtaking, at the top of a hill with the most phenomenal views! The staff were friendly and discreet, and the food at the villa was delicious. John was able to help us with going on a few local excursions - to the hot springs, swimming with dolphins and the highlight of the trip - a four hour trek through rice paddies and to some amazing waterfalls.
I would definitely recommend this villa! Thank you so much John, Ketut, Putu, Agus & Co... we had a great time :) -

Left on 09/15/2012 for a stay in August 2012
To say we had an incredible experience that we will never forget at Villa Patria is an understatement. The care and beauty that we were surrounded with at Villa Patria has been unequaled on any of our travels.
We chose Villa Patria to host a celebration event for 50 of our friends and family and then stayed there as well for a week. The furnishings and decorations are exquisite and the staff could not have been more attentive. The views are spectacular and you really feel like you can get away from it all and submerge yourself in Balinese culture while keeping a high level of amenities. However, at the same time, the Villa has enough resources to host a sizable event and really do it right down to every detail.
I would highly recommend this establishment without hesitation and confidently say that you will be in the best hands you could hope for. -

Left on 08/19/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We stayed for one night at Villa Patria in the beginning of august and what a beautiful place! We arrived in the evening to a romantic dinner for two on our own private terrace. The staff is lovely, very discreet and the food was very nice. The villa itself is mostly open air to some stunning tropical gardens, furnished with Balinese antiques and complete with the sounds of water all around. Breakfast was delicious and served right on time. We had no complaints and would return anytime!

Left on 05/29/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We stayed here in early January 2012. A great adult retreat – probably not suitable for young children. John is a gracious host, and all of the staff are fantastic. The quality of the meals served in the villa (if you elect to dine there) is really good. The gardens are paradise. This is a place to go if you want to unwind. As with many Bali destinations, the road to the villa is interesting, to say the least, but as you enter the gate you know you’re in a haven of tranquillity. One option is to rent a car, but we simply made use of the driver provided. You get one complimentary trip daily into Lovina, and we made use of the tour options at other times, as it wasn’t expensive. North Bali is completely different to the touristy Kuta area, and recommended for total relaxation.
Tip: take mosquito repellent and light long sleeved shirts and long trousers. -

MelbourneBeautiful experience in an amazing location
Left on 11/21/2011 for a stay in November 2011
Villa Patria is the most amazing place we have stayed at in Bali. The gardens are beautifully designed and maintained by John and his staff, the enormous infinity pool overlooks the mountains as well as the distant views of the ocean, and the villa itself has been thoughtfully decorated using Balinese artwork and textiles. The villa has internet access, a clean, open air bathroom, satellite t.v., cooking facilities, books and magazines and food available to order.
Sitting in the open air verandah watching the rain and reading books from the Villa's 'library' was a relaxing way to spend a few days, leaving occasionally to eat at the beautiful 'Damai' restaurant or watch the sunset from a beachside restaurant in Lovina.
The villa is about 10 minutes drive from the town of Lovina, but there is a friendly driver to take you wherever you need to go.
The only less than positive thing we could say is that the roosters ensure you're awake to enjoy the villa very, very early!
I would recommend the Villa Patria to my closest friends.

EnglandParadise...didnt want to leave!
Left on 09/13/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We stayed for 3 nights at Villa Patria, as part of a 3 week trip around Bali and Borneo. There were 4 of us (2 couples)aged 27-31yrs.
On first entering the grounds of Villa Patria we were all amazed by how beautiful it truly is...I don't think photos can do it justice.
The tiered gardens are perfectly manicured and beautiful. The views from the infinity pool out over the forest and towards the Java Sea are incredible.
Watching the sunset on the first evening whilst having drinks in the pool was a highlight for us all.
As the villa is set high up in the mountains and in its own secluded grounds it is very peaceful and the only noises come from the wildlife in the forest and the roosters in the mornings!
The villa itself is designed and maintained to a very high standard. There is one large bedroom with a beautiful ensuite outdoor bathroom with hot water shower. To the rear of the villa there is a Lumbung which has been converted into a bedroom and has its own separate outdoor bathroom.
The staff at Villa Patria really enhance the experience of staying there.
They are friendly and attentive but also discrete-it often feels as if there is noone else there except you.
Breakfast was cooked by Putu every morning and we also had 2 evening meals at the villa. Each meal was cooked to a very high standard and great value for money.
During our time at Villa Patria we spent time with Gede, our driver. He provided lots of information about the local area and much entertainment to us during our trips out, during which he schooled us in Balinese providing much amusement when we relayed it back to him and the locals.
Villa Patria was definitely a highlight of our 3 weeks travelling Bali and Borneo. We were all reluctant to leave and are hoping to visit again soon.
We would definitely recommend Villa Patria to anyone looking for a little piece of paradise in Bali.
Many thanks to John and all the staff at Villa Patria,
From Laura, Mark, Rhiannon and Paul

Staying at the Villa Patria is a different experience. The villa and its garden are very beautiful. The staff are discreet and very helpful. The setting is somewhat remote but a driver is available for trips. This is the perfect place for singles or couples who want time to chill, reflect, drop out for a while or just spend time together in peaceful and beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed everything about our stay.

Left on 07/18/2011 for a stay in July 2011
My wife and two daughters (18 and 21 yo) stayed for four nights at Villa Patria. It is a delightful villa set in magnificent gardens overlooking the north Bali resort town of Lovina. Our host John has paid enormous attention to detail in furnishing and layout of the facilities. The gardens features a beautiful pool of generou proportions with breathtaking views.
The staff at the villa provide excellent service including meals and our driver, Gede, was an extremely obliging, helpful and informative. We spent our time divided between the township of Lovina, with its many bars and cafes with live music, and the tranquillity of the villa.
We were all extremely sorry to leave Villa Patria and will definitely visit agin. -

On arrival at Villa Patria our first impression was a sanctuary set amidst fragrant terraced gardens. Surrounded by pristine native forest Villa Patria enhances the surrounding environment and blends with it.
Our days started with a fresh and inviting breakfast served alfresco on the terrace, while experiencing the extensive and unobstructed views of the dazzling blue sky meeting the glistening ocean.
During the day we split our time between day trips and staying 'home'. When at 'home' we communed with the dragonflies and swallows that sip from the cleverly situated infinity pool; swam laps (yes the pool is huge) and catnapped in the stillness of the afternoon while lunch was being prepared.
We found eveings were best spent in one of the many private sitting areas watching the earth as it turns from the sun. You can stay home and have dinner on the terrace, book at the five star hotel down the road or drive into Lovina for a beachside meal. Any choice is magnificent, you will lose yourself.
The villa interior is so gorgeous I actually looked forward to shower time and bedtime, this is because I was thankful for the skillful combination of textures in stonework, tiles, textiles, artwork and a very comfortable bed. The interior combines luxury and comfort, privacy and escape...a place to dream.
Villa Patria is a retreat where you will naturally disengage and relax. Thank you to John Palmer for your hard work in creating such a rare place. Your generous hospitality and efforts are sincerely appreciated.
Kindest regards,
Joanna and Neal Firth

Portsea, AustraliaVilla Patria - as close to perfection as it ever gets.
Left on 05/16/2011 for a stay in April 2011
Villa Patria offers discerning travelers the opportunity to relax in a peaceful hillside setting, savoring great food (beautifully presented on an expansive veranda) whilst looking beyond the exotic flowers in the gorgeous garden to the village of Lovina on the Java sea.
Within moments after arriving you will be grinning from ear to ear - the search for a bit of paradise was more successful than you imagined possible.
Try to put the camera aside for a moment so you can slip into the tiled infinity pool, idyllically located on the edge of a steep drop with the former clove plantation brilliant green below. Cast an eye at the jungle across the way or watch as the sky darkens and refreshing rains enliven the plants and draw ever more colour from the ground - take the opportunity to take an outdoor shower in the large, private open bathroom.
Life at Villa Patria is as relaxing as you will find and yet days are always pleasantly full. Settle to the relaxed pace, read from the wide library of books, enjoy casting an eye over the numerous Balinese antiques, statues and garden sculptures and - on the very odd occasion and never intrusively - bump into your hosts who live alongside your villa.
Balinese attention to detail is well-known. In this regard, the staff at Villa Patria are simply exemplary.
Artists, nature lovers, escapees from the madness, romantics...Villa Patria won't disappoint.

There are no words to describe Villa Patria nor the wonderfully attentive staff. Â This is a place of dreams, views to die for, food fit for a king and service second to none. Â Thank you John, Wayan and all the lovely young men who made our stay truly perfect from start to finish. Â From the infinity pool with views down the hillside and out across the Java Sea to the beautifully furnished villa (obviously done with much love and thought), the magnificent gardens again tended with love and care, nothing has been missed. Â A truly superb place for peace, quiet, relaxation and utter indulgence.
Thank you all so much for allowing us the privilege of sharing your utopia.

The villa itself is simply stunning, with beautiful artifacts perfectly placed and gorgeous views in all directions. Left on 10/14/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Once you have entered the gates of Villa Patria a deep, joyful stillness overtakes you. The majesty of the setting, with an endless view of the jungle mountain sides and the Java Sea below, greets you first. It is simply stunning. Every inch of Villa Patria has been lovingly and spiritually brought into being.
The Villa itself is an homage to Balinese art and architecture, and the art of living out of doors. Each piece of Indonesian furniture and Balinese art has been selected and placed with the owner's artistic eye. Indeed, it was the finest collection of artwork we saw anywhere in the country. The bedroom and open air bathroom are magnificent, and we miss the symphony of croaking from the resident shower frog and the perfect comfort and romance of the mosquito netted bed.
During the day we found the covered bale in the garden and next to the pool, a sweet place to commune. The edgeless pool, overhanging the terraces, is the best and most beautiful we have ever found. Always the perfect temperature, it was a delight to swim amidst the clouds while split tailed swifts darted and played above us.
Villa Patria rates 5 stars in every facet. The staff was so friendly, and exceedingly proffessional. They attended to our every request with a smile. They are excellent chefs and we relished each of their fine culinary creations. They care for their guests in every way; placing soft white towels at the pool, bringing lunch to the bale, turning down the bed and arranging mosquito netting for us each night, laundry done and folded upon our request, even quided shopping excursions to the market in Singaraja in search of local specialties. We have never been so well taken care of.
Villa Patria is sublime. Treat yourself. You will bring home a bit of Bali's soul along with your own... refreshed and renewed. -

Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We stayed for two weeks in august. The villa is a 10mn drive from Lovina village. The relative isolation and beautiful view means that it is a great place to stay if you are looking for peace and quiet (except for the morning roosters, but I gather that these are difficult to avoid on the island). The staff are very attentive, polite, kind and patient with the children. The villa manager will organise excursions and there is quite a lot to do, although some of the tours will include a lot of driving (thankfully by the villa manager). The gardens are absolutely stunning (both by day and by night) and the pool is spectacular. We had a very relaxing stay and will have very fond memories of Villa Patria.

My husband and I recently spent our holiday at Villa Patria. I can't recommend it highly enough if you are looking for a quiet, secluded space with a beautiful view and outstanding, attentive staff. Wayan in particular said "My job is to know what you want before you know it" and indeed he did. He suggested restaurants and places to go that were exactly what we were looking for. The space is perfect enough that you will never want to leave! Particularly if you enjoy photography, you could spend all day capturing the flowers, lizards and insects.

The house is amazing and the view spectacular! We woke every morning and opened the shutters to enjoy the view of the ocean. We also spend hours at the edgeless pool with the same view. The grounds were particularily beautiful and well maintained.
Our overwhelming feeling was that of peace and tranquility and it was with great saddness when we left to go back to our busy lives. -

We stayed at Villa Patria for 12 days. I have never had vacation accommodations that affected me in such a positive way. We are not ones that can easily sit around and relax; well at Villa Patria it was easy!! The view is more than spectacular. The infinity pool looking down to the ocean is beautiful. The grounds are stunning and meticulously maintained. The villa is delightful. One spends all their time outdoors except for when in bed. There are absolutely NO mosquitos; not one in 12 days. The refreshing ocean breezes and ceiling fans keep one quite comfortable all the time. We never even used the air conditioning in the bedroom. The staff is amazing. Ones every need is met with professional attention. The staff does their magic in a very unobtrusive way. If one feels like a lunch or dinner at the villa, a chef is brought in to cook a very nice tasty meal. Breakfast was always very tasty and substantial. The manager, tour guide, driver and overall resident expert on Bali, Wayan, made our trip so much more wonderful than it would have been had we been on our own. Anywhere we wanted to go, he took us. He is a great driver, very knowledgeable, always smiles and takes everything in stride. We left feeling like we had made a good friend. We miss him and the villa very much. We arrived there exhausted and stressed and left there feeling such a sense of peace that has continued since we arrived back to our busy lives. I have been to Bali many times in the past 30 years and I have always had a great time, but thanks to Villa Patria and staff, this trip was the most excellent in all ways. If I could,I would move in tomorrow. Don't pass this experience up.

Left on 08/27/2009 for a stay in January 2008
My wife and stayed at Villa Patria Lovina in January 2007 and again in 2008. It is the perfect getaway. The design and style of the villa is contemporary Balinese and ultimately reveals the refined taste of the proprietor, John Palmer, through its artwork, relaxing furniture, beautiful grounds and integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The comfort and style of the villa is only surpassed by the 180 degree views of the mountains and rice fields and unending Java Sea. Stunning!!
The villa is located on the North of the island which is much more natural, less developed, and quieter than the noisy southern end of the island (Jambaran Bay, Kuta, Seminayak). If you want authenticity and luxury away from the tourist traps and enormous cookie cutter resorts of the south, Villa Patria Lovina is perfect choice. As food lovers we loved going down the road to Damai, a five star restaurant. The staff at the villa is great and the whole experience more intimate.
My wife and will be back for sure..our only wish is that we could make it this year!! -

This is a beautiful homein extensive gardens, exquisitely designed to capture the essence of Bali. Located on a cliff side, over looking a gorge, mountains, and the ocean beyond, it is quiet and snuggly ensconced in Balinese ambience. The grounds appropriately include two small temples, an beautiful infinity pool, and many areas for quietly enjoying the gorgeous views. The staff are exceptionally attentive - but in a subdued, almost invisible manner, so as not to detract from your otherworldly experience. The food is superb. A great place for a honeymoon, or just to get away from it all and have a magical, and if you are inclined, spiritual experience.
