Additional Location Information
La Fenice is in a stunning position looking out from the old bastion of Montjustin, a pretty hilltop hamlet with panoramic views over the beautiful Luberon countryside. The fascinating market towns of Apt and Forcalquier are just twenty minutes away; Avignon and Aix en Provence an hour’s drive; Marseille Airport and the Mediterranean a further quarter of an hour.
The villa and the grounds are at the top of the village (the lane stops just past our back door) and constitute the old castle keep. There is a superb lookout point (on clear days you can see the Alps) from one of the original towers.
La Fenice is a wonderful place to do nothing but it’s equally a superb base for exploring the Gorges du Verdon, the Fontaine de Vaucluse, the Camargue and the Roman towns of Provence – all within easy reach for a day trip.
For the more active holiday goers, the beautiful Luberon golf course is 15 km away, Cereste has excellent tennis courts, and horse riding is minutes away in the valley.
Finally, this is a wonderful walking country. Whether you want to take a short stroll to the ruins of the 16th century church, a leisurely walk to the village cemetery or longer walks through the park, they all start at your doorstep. Superb walks can be taken particularly via the medieval path that links Manosque to Apt (more widely known as the GR4) and which traverses Montjustin.

LondonGreat winter retreat
Left on 01/21/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We had a blissful wintery week in this beautiful spot at the start of 2013. Bright January sunshine, walks directly from the house, friendly locals and endless coffees and antique hunting in the local villages. The location felt a little like a French version of the Cotswolds - the house is nestled on a hilltop with lots of beautiful old stone houses dotted around it. Private without the feeling of total isolation - perfection!
The log fire made the stay, along with Joan Duck, who manages the property. Joan is a real character and generous with her time. She showed us the peaceful resting place of Henri Cartier Bresson and with her unique no nonsense charm. We know the broader area well and the location really is special - less manicured than Les alpilles and the mountains and villages are more than a match.
Although this is an obvious location for summer fun, we would also recommend La Fenice in the winter to anyone looking for somewhere to tuck up snuggly and get away from it all in comfortable surroundings. It's a little like being in a hot air balloon - floating above the countryside out of reach from life's cares and concerns. Thank you for the hospitality. -

La Fenice is a superb, well equipped holiday home in the tiny hilltop village of Mont Justin. We spent a week there with friends and can honestly say that in almost 40 years of staying in French holiday gites, this was the best so far! The smell of lavender that greets you as you walk through the front gate is a lovely start but it gets even better when you walk in through the front door and see the lovely vaulted ceilings in the dining and kitchen areas. The view from the lounge window is stunning and the bedrooms are very comfortable with en suite facilities. The pool, even in October, was lovely, if a tad on the chilly side! We had fun improving our boules skills on the pétanque court and the views from the bottom of the garden across to the mountains were superb, especially in the early evening sunlight. The information and impressive TV technology were great. We visited local markets and cooked some delicious meals with fresh local ingredients and we also ate out at a couple of recommended local restaurants - both excellent. Many thanks to Meir for letting us share his piece of heaven on earth.

The small village of Montjustin is found by a single sign on the High Road linking the Provencal market towns of Forcalquier and apt. Among the ruins of the medieval castle a couple dozen stone residences are crafted.
The immaculate and loved villa, La Fenice, where modern quarry tiled floors meet ancient stone walls and ceilings of the Cave. High in the mountains...cooler than much of Provence in this very hot summer. Decorated with impeccable Provencal style, and equipped with modern appliances and internet Wi-Fi. We most loved wandering through castle ruins, the tower and the remaining fortress walls. Driving down the mountain two and half kilometers to the High Road on a well-paved narrow road, you pull over to allow another car to pass, a farm dog or two sleeping safely in the road. Baled hay is scattered impressionistically along the mountain road along with sheep, a few horses, and cattle. Watch out for a chicken or wandering cat near the castle. On the High Road driving to the boulangerie in Cereste, see remarkable lavender fields, strawberries harvested, a truck laden with hay bales, an old Citroen on Sunday morning, and a frame of ancient Cypress trees marking the entrance to Cereste. There may be a bicycle race on Sunday along the Grande Randonnee up at the castle when I return with fresh croissants and baguette. La Fenice is for stopping, smelling lavender, to play boules of Petanque, and enjoy the romance and mysteries of Provence. Wonderful personal management from the owner and his local manager. You will feel the kind and thoughtful help during your stay. It will be a unique memory of Provence for you.

Cirencester, UKWonderful Provencal holiday home
Left on 11/08/2011 for a stay in September 2011
No words or pictures can truly describe the peace and relaxing qualities of Villa Fenice, the reality exceeded our expectations. This is a real holiday "home”. It is extremely comfortable with everything provided that you could require. The accommodation is spacious, the beds comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and the bathrooms (and in fact the whole villa) were extremely clean and well looked after. We loved the character of the stone building, the views from the lounge and particularly the vaulted ceilings in the kitchen and dining hall. We were only sorry we were there for one week, as we wanted the experience to continue longer.
Outside, you are spoilt for choice for places to sit, be it in the sun or shade - by the pool, in the garden or on the terraces. We loved the pool! We needed to relax and we did not venture far, but the other couple who were with us, were more active and very much enjoyed the surrounding scenery and the hill villages of the Luberon, there is plenty to see and do without having to drive far. The walk to Cereste along the ridge is recommended, also the market on a Monday in Forcalquier. The views towards the alps at the bottom of the garden, from the viewpoint are superb.
We cannot recommend this holiday home enough and look forward to returning.

If you close your eyes and picture the ideal french country home, with modern amenities, gorgeous private pool and magical Van Gogh-esque landscapes on all sides, you will find it as your reality at La Fenice. My husband and I came for our 5 year anniversary and could not believe the beautiful lavender lined driveway, the gorgeous quince, apple and cherry trees in the garden, nor the sun drenched patio where we had wonderful lunches of wine and cheese after a blissful afternoon swim --it was more than we ever expected. The villa, one of 12 homes that over look a sprawling valley, is immediately comfortable with terra cotta floors, stone walls and glorious views on all sides. We enjoyed making breakfasts and lunches, in the ample kitchen, and eating outside on the upstairs terrace --also a great place to see the stars at night. The house is clean, great for couples or family and Meir is the ideal host --so helpful with all the details and suggestions. You know you are staying with host that loves Provence as much as you will, when you stay. Montjustin is also a great center point to get to aix en Provence, Avignon, Chateuaneuf du Pape, Marseille and apt. We would recommend it without reservation and would recommend it to anyone interested in totally immersing oneself in relaxation or deeper dive into the glories of Provence.

We arrived at La Fenice on a Friday afternoon excited for our two week getaway. We knew it was going to be great, but it was so much more!!
We spent two weeks mesmerized by the overwhelming beauty of the area and the view from this gorgeously restored 19th century home.
La Venice is a dream!
It is paradise!
We celebrated our long overdue honeymoon for the first week by gazing at the stunning views of the alps, basking in the sun in the garden and enjoying the refreshing swims in the sparkling pool. We have a little boy and he loved it, crawling in the soft grass, breathing fresh air and learning to swim. La Fenice is romantic and a perfect setting for couples and families. It was the ideal honeymoon home. It also has a perfect large cot so that our little baby had a place to sleep and play safely.
In the second week of our stay our good friends joined us, and together we explored the Luberon - visiting small beautiful towns, old castles and parks.
Our evenings were indulgent - eating delicious meals on the La Fenice deck, in the garden and by the stone fireplace. Montjustin has no through car traffic, which means that we enjoyed our wine and cheese in the most peaceful surrounds.
I don't usually write in these forums but this time I couldn't help myself - because La Fenice the most beautiful, special and fantastic holiday home and deserves to be shared. There was only one disappointing moment - and that was having to leave and go home! -

Montjustin is located in a beautiful little village atop a scenic plateau. There are only 56 inhabitants living in the picturesque village in the heart of the Luberon. You can literally walk out the front door of La Fenice and be at one of the many trails that cross through MontJustin. This is the ideal location for those that want peace and quiet after a long day traversing the French countryside.
This wonderfully spacious villa has all the modern comforts you would find at home. The ground floor has a nice dining area and a well appointed kitchen. The owners have gone to great lengths to outfit the kitchen with everything you might need. The open space living room comes well furnished with comfortable furniture and a modern entertainment system. There are two very large windows and a fantastic glass door that you can open to walk out onto the large deck/porch that faces west and is wonderful for sipping a Rhone valley wine and watching the sun go down over the spectacular countryside! The master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom has a "very” comfortable queen bed, spacious dresser, large wardrobe and two large windows that can be opened.
The beautiful patio has a magnificent pool in the center of it and has a lot of shrubbery surrounding it - giving the patio incredible privacy. Nestled at the edge of the property you will find a Boules court. From the garden you will see a majestic view of the Luberon valley and wonderful views of the French/Swiss alps - truly breathtaking!!
My wife and I did months of research before we ended up choosing La Fenice. It was in no small part due to the wonderful owner of the property - Meir!. Meir was a great source of information for helping us with everything from driving tips, to finding a quiet restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. Any question we asked was answered.

Left on 05/16/2011 for a stay in June 2010
We absolutely love staying in La Fenice in the tiny hill-top village of Montjustin, so much so that after our first 2 week holiday in June 2006 we returned for 3 weeks in 2007, 3 weeks in 2010 and booked again as soon as we got home for 2011... It is just so wonderfully relaxing, calm, peaceful and picturesque there that it is almost addictive! Mostly we read, read and read some more, while lazing about in the sun, in the shade, in the pool, taking breaks to look at the views, photograph the butterflies on the lavender bushes, pop down to Cereste or Reillane for supplies or over to apt for breakfast and its colourful Saturday market. There are also walking tracks on the doorstep if you're energetic and dozens of interesting places for day trips but as I said before, we go for reading, long warm days of tranquillity, sunsets with classical music on the hi-fi and a glass of wine... bliss!
The house has its own atmosphere with twists, turns and terraces, cool downstairs with 2m thick walls, warmer upstairs - can't have it all - but windows that are a pleasure to look out of.
Our children, girls, who were 11, 16 and 18 years old the first time we rented La Fenice, have been as keen as us to go back which says a lot considering that there isn't so much as a shop or café in the village and no nightlife... but that is more than compensated for, as far as they are concerned, by the unusualness of the house's layout, its having internet, TV and a DVD player, swimming pool, big garden, local cats, dogs, chickens and even the odd friendly villager dropping in, the village's church ruins and castle walls, colourful local markets and other near-by shopping (did I mention that they're girls?!) options that we don't have in Norway.
All in all, if the above appeals, we totally recommend La Fenice, but if you want to be noisy, party, go out on the town then you'd probably enjoy St Tropez more... -

If you are for a quiet vacation in Provence this is the place for you. We shared the property with another couple and we shared a rental car to tour the area. In a "star" style we visited many small and somewhat larger towns, markets, wineries, small museums etc. No need to praise the Provence landscape, as well as food and wine. Highly recommended.
