Description from the owner

Bathed in sunshine for most of the day, the terrace of Apartment Fosso is the best spot to watch the sun set over the rooftops of Lucca. Located on the first floor above ground (second floor American style) of a 17th century building in the heart of Lucca's historic centre, Apartment Fosso consists of a huge bedroom, a very large sitting room (both with access onto the amazing terrace), a brand new bathroom and a large, eat-in kitchen.

Only 14 steps lead to a small entrance hall of this light filled apartment. Off to the right is a very spacious kitchen (newly installed in 2010) with a comfortable dining suite. There are three large w...Read more

    Additional Location Information

Nestled between Florence and the Mediterranean Sea, Lucca is a virtual treasure trove of everything special about Italy and Tuscan living. A wealth of art, history, culture and relaxed living, it is the perfect spot to have as a base for a Tuscan holiday. All the major attractions of Tuscany are an easy drive along the Autostrada. Florence, Siena, and San Gimignano, are all within an hour and a half’s drive and Pisa and the beach are only 25 min away as well as the Cinque Terre which quickly accessible on the train or via car. Lucca is one of the few cities in Italy to have its original mediaeval city walls intact. More than 200 years ago, these walls were turned into avenues and parklands and have been a major attraction of the city ever since. A "passeggiata" along these spectacular walls is the essential experience of a visit to Lucca.

Destination Lucca specialises in providing luxury, self-catering holiday accommodation and vacation rentals in the historic centre of Lucca. We offer a range of apartments inside the walls of Lucca and a select collection of villas with pools in the hills surrounding Lucca and the outskirts of Florence. Our flats range from one bedroom apartments suitable for a couple to massive four bedroom apartments. Most have a terrace or an outdoor space, are fully air-conditioned and are full self-contained. The apartments are authentically furnished featuring antiques and original artworks and meticulously presented to enable you to experience Tuscan living as it is now and was 150 years ago.

Exceeded our expectations for a home stay in Italy

Left on 02/17/2013 for a stay in April 2012

My wife and I visited Lucca in late april 2012 and thoroughly enjoy our time in apartment Fosso. The apartment was a great compromise between mid 17th century Italy and a modern Italy. It has an adequate kitchen and modern bathroom. The apartment is in handy walking distance to down town Lucca. Andrew gave us a good introduction to local culture and places to go and to eat. For example he referred us to a little restaurant near the Puccini statue which was a wonderful Italian eating experience. I would love to go back to Lucca and would not hesitate in contacting andrew about accommodation .

Left on 01/30/2013 for a stay in September 2012

We loved both Lucca and apartment Fosso. On our arrival andrew was there at the entrance to the apartment to meet and greet us and spent time filling us in on useful information about the apartment and Lucca. The apartment is spacious and tastefully decorated...we loved the paintings. The huge double bed is really comfortable and our cousin who slept in the sofa bed found it very comfortable. The apartment is slightly off centre - a five minute walk from nearest piazza...the benefit of this location is that it is peaceful. Sitting on the spacious balcony with open views acoss quiet gardens is a delight particularly in the afternoon when the sun floods the balcony.

Left on 01/29/2013 for a stay in May 2012

Andrew was a fantastic link in our trip to Italy in late May 2012. Lucca speaks for itself in its delightful ambience of this circular walled village of true Italian life. Destination Lucca was just the most devine apartment with a large bedroom..such a comfy big bed with gorgeous furnishings. Our own kitchen dinning room was great for preparing nibbles and wine for our pre dinner sessions on the terrace at Fosso. We spent some wonderful time on the terrace enjoying the local produce and wine from the alimentari Gastronomia just across the road...so much for ya $ compared to australian costs. We walked the streets of Lucca easily from apartment Fosso. Andrew gave us detailed maps and great tips for local events such as the opera by Puccini in his childhood church for only 15 Euros. Also he directed us to our favorite day ..hiring a car from local dealer then driving up through the Tuscan hills to quaint and historic villages...along the way taking in the wonderful history and architecture. Andrew runs the most charming place to stay...his caring and kind attention to travelers needs was second to none. We can't wait to have another holiday in Destination Lucca. Thanks a lot andrew...Hooroo Carmel & Chris Dwyer ...Melbourne , Australia.

We loved the location and quickly felt at home in the apartment and around town. Everything was clean and the outside eating area was lovely. Terrific value and just a really easy place to stay and very obliging hosts.

A beautiful week in a beautiful, authentic, old Italian apartmen

Left on 01/18/2013 for a stay in September 2012

Lucca is a delightful historic city with lots to explore. It is also ideally situated for day trips. Andrew has being a helpful landlord down to a fine art and ensures everything runs smoothly - from meeting us at the station, checking in, explaining the apartment, helpful hints about the city, assistance with any problems, etc. He even helped us get tickets to the Uffizi much more easily than described in our guide book.
The apartment is very spacious, spotlessly clean and has a large outdoor area which was perfect for wine and cheese in the evening. It is in a beautiful old building and has rather grand features - especially the ceiling in the bedroom. Very spacious.
It is perfectly located and provides easy walking access to most areas in the old city. Most of the time we walked to and from the station but when we had luggage or had been on a long day trip we took a taxi home - very easy and cheap.
Highly recommended. One of the highlights of our 2 months in Italy.

Left on 01/17/2013 for a stay in July 2012

Lucca is a wonderful town and apartment Fosso was a great base to stay and enjoy this home away from home. It's conveniently located inside the walls, quiet, spacious and has a great outdoor terrace to while away the hours. Great hosts, super friendly and eager and generous in giving you local knowledge and information. The common sense provision of a welcome pack of basics such as real coffee, milk, washing powder and some basics in the kitchen was very welcome indeed.

Perfect spot to call home in Lucca

Left on 01/16/2013 for a stay in September 2012

My friend and I stayed in apartment Fosso for two weeks in September 2012 to attend an Italian school in Lucca. The apartment was very well appointed with a comfortable queen bed in the master, and a pull out sofa bed in the living room. The kitchen was large and had everything you need to make yourself at home, including washing machine. The deck is also quite large and a lovely place to relax at the end of a day of shopping, or sightseeing. The location is perfect, and you can walk everywhere easily. Would absolutely recommend this apartment! Enjoy!

We rang on a whim, hummed and ha'ed about taking it and so glad we did. Andrew and Bernadette couldn't have been more helpful (and tolerant), even recommending our activities in Lucca - everyone a winner and could have done more if we could have stayed longer. The apartment is spacious and comfortable, disregarding the watermelon pink kitchen cabinets (Andrew will tell you the story). Easy to access and 5 minutes from undercover parking and to the centre, we'd loved to have stayed longer in both Lucca and this apartment. Thanks andrew and Bernadette.

      A wonderful week in Lucca

Left on 07/16/2012 for a stay in April 2012

We had the most wonderful week at apartment Fossa in Lucca. After a long train journey from Lyon, we were greeted by our very amiable and informative host andrew, who provided invaluable information on Lucca and great restaurant recommendations for our stay. .The apartment was spacious and the kitchen was well appointed. There more than adequate room for two adults and one child. There was a wonderful terrace overlooking a private garden. We felt privileged to stay in a building with local families. An additional surprise was the occasional wafting sounds of a neighbour practising classical piano in the building. Andrew greeted us upon our arrival, and arranged a taxi for our departure which was very much appreciated. Lucca is a beautiful place that is only enhanced by a stay at apartment Fossa. We recommend a stay there whole heartedly. Thank you andrew and Bernadette, we hope to be back soon.

a wonderful vacation that we will never forget

Left on 07/15/2012 for a stay in June 2012

My children ages 8,10,12, and I stayed here for two weeks in June. We were traveling alone and wanted something that was central and could utilize public transportation to explore Tuscany. From the very beginning, Andrew was very quick to respond to our inquiries and provided the information that we needed that then made our desicion to stay here easy.
We were greeted at the train station by andrew and then walked to our apartment. He provided us with a map and recommendations for grocery, restaurants, and things to do in the area. The apartment had everything we needed to make ourselves at "home". The rooms were large and well maintained. The bathroom had a nice shower-can'y always find this. The kitchen was much larger than other apartments we had looked at. The bed was comfortable as was the sofa bed. The terrace was where we spent our mornings and evenings.
The apartment is located in a residential area of the walled city. Everything we needed was within a 5 minute walk. There was a natural spring fountain at the end of the street that we able to fill our water jugs at. We took the train to Pistoia to the zoo, Pisa, Siena, and Montecatini. We took the bus to Viareggio and spent the day at the beach.
We were pretty self sufficient. But when we called andrew and Bernadatette, regardless of time, they were always pleasant, helpful, and quick to be there.
We are considering returning next year and would definitely recommend.

It is the patio off the bedroom that makes this place to lay in bed in the morning with the french windows open and Tuscan autumn light coming in is superb. Great location you are only a 15 minute walk essentially from everything in Lucca. Andrew and Bernadette are excellent hiosts and go out of their way to help. Excellent restaurant the ammondonostro just around the corner. Simply magic place to stay.

Left on 08/21/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Don't hesitate to book this apartment..it is a really good combination of space/ sunlight/ location/ comfort and practicality.
The street, via del fosso, where the apartment is, has a canal along it's length, with high sides so you can't fall in, and is close to everything. The canal adds interest to your walkabout, and it also has a handy water fountain all the locals use. We filled bottles there daily. You can see pictures of the street on the web. It is a quiet area and the apartment gets sunshine on the terrace from noon to sunset. Inside, the rooms are large and clean and have high ceilings. The bedroom and livingroom have doors to the terrace. The large bed is very comfy. The window shutters keep the rooms cool and dark for lie ins! It's a great place. We could hear the neighbours telly outside in the daytime because the windows opened above the terrace, but we realised that this was common around Lucca because we noticed it elsewhere in passing. Also, the main street entrance hall was cluttered with refurbishment debris, but that didn't bother us at all. The apartment is clean. Andrew is very likeable, and he was great helping us with advice and happy to do extra bits, and it was reassuring that he was on hand to help at any time. The food shops were great and we loved the Lucca towers and cycling the walls. Don't hesitate to book this apartment..it was a great choice for us.

Fabulous apartment in a Magical City

Left on 07/20/2011 for a stay in June 2011

My family of four (two adults and two children) enjoyed a fabulous stay in apartment Fosso in June 2011. Our stay was undoubtedly enhanced by the warm, wonderful customer service provided by Bernadette of Destination Lucca.
The apartment itself was perfect for our needs; very spacious and clean, with old-world Italian charm. The living room opened onto a sunny terrace, from which we enjoyed many meals. My only suggestion is that a better umbrella should be provided, since the one that was there didn't do much to protect us from the sun's strong rays.
The kitchen was large and well-equipped. Bernadette went out of her way to provide us with a high chair for our infant (free of charge) which helped immensely during meal times.
The bedroom was large and lovely with high, frescoed ceilings and a large, comfortable bed. A toddler bed and infant cot were graciously set up for us by Bernadette.
The apartment itself was located on a lovely, quiet street, close to many amenities (lovely alimentare, gelaterias, and playgrounds). It was an extremely short walking distance to the centre of town, and to the lovely 4-km footpath along Lucca's Medieval wall.
Bernadette went above and beyond the call of duty to provide our toddler with toys, games, and Dvds. She was also immensely helpful in answering the multitude of questions we had for her regarding things to do in and around Lucca. Greeting us upon our arrival at the train station, and sending us off in a taxi upon our departure was also very much appreciated.
I have stayed in many apartments in Europe (including Italy). This apartment, and rental experience, was by far the best we have had. I can't say enough good things about Lucca, Apartment Fosso, and Bernadette. We have already recommended this apartment to our friends, and we certainly plan on returning to lovely Lucca!

Left on 07/18/2011 for a stay in May 2011

We were hoping for a Tuscan experience and were rewarded with this charming apartment in the glorious little city of Lucca. Apartment Fosso is large, secure, airy and sun-drenched with a fabulous private balcony for lazy afternoons. While not luxurious, it is clean and comfortable and special care has been taken with the furnishings to preserve the character of the rooms. Andrew, our host, was delightful, thoughtful and professional. We especially liked the little hospitality kit to kick start our stay which included essentials like coffee, washing powder and a fabulous bottle of wine. We would definitely recommend apartment Fosso for any stay.

We stayed at apartment Fosso as part of our trip to Lucca, it was exactly what we were looking for in terms of comfort, location and amenities. Andrew and Bernadette were fantastic in making sure everything was ready even though we booked last minute. They have done a fantastic job to the apartment giving it a lived in feel and not sterile like some places we have stayed. Everything that you would need is there, especially the washine machine that was very welcome after being on the road for 7 days and in need of clean clothes. Central Lucca is only 5 mins away and the use of underground car park was very welcome. Their knowledge of things to look for in Lucca was first rate especially the restaurants they recommended. Would definitely stay there again
