An idyllic retreat near historic Bagni di Lucca.

Left on 08/31/2012 for a stay in August 2012

Le Mura is, quite simply, idyllic. An extensive, enchanting farmhouse nestled amongst fruit trees and flowers, it is a perfect retreat for families in need of relaxation, whilst being an excellent base from which to explore local history.

Whilst at Le Mura, not only did we sample the excellent cuisine at the local restaurant in Benabbio (hand gestures required for non-Italian speakers, but appreciatedly so), but we travelled to Lucca (bike rides around the walls recommended, especially at 3 Euros per hour), Bagni di Lucca (the local spa town steeped in literary history; look out for the temporary dwellings of the Brownings, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron (whose villa was, unsurprisingly, the most grandiose of the three)), Siena and Monteriggioni. All were easy to drive to, and all were within 1.5 hours of the property.

Having stayed in august, the weather was hot, and returning to Le Mura every evening was a sheer delight. The house is well equipped and full of rustic charm; its sense of character has really been retained despite its modern pool with magnificent views, flat screen TV and wireless, modem driven broadband, so is a perfect combination of history and modernity which caters for the needs of all.

The communication we received from the owners prior to booking was superb. Celia and Enzo were the most accommodating hosts; Enzo spent a long while advising us on the best routes to drive along (a mountain drive was a definite highlight) and the fact that they once lived at the property is clearly evident; it is not just a tourists' villa but a beloved home, and one we were very privileged to have shared.

To Celia and Enzo - thank you.

      Perfection!

Left on 08/04/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Words cannot describe our magical week at Le Mura in Tuscany. We were there to celebrate our 40th anniversary with our three children, their spouses, and our three granddaughters, 5, 2 1/2 and 11 months. There was something for each of us to enjoy, and enjoy we did.

First, a heartfelt thank you to Celia and Enzo, who answered our hundreds of questions before we arrived. Always gracious and prompt, they never let us down.

We began our days with a 15-minute walk up the hill -- walking sticks and grandchildren in tow -- to the mountain village of Benabbio for our morning coffee and something sweet. Not to be missed is the grocery store, and a must-buy is the Benabbio honey, made from the chestnut flowers. We learned from Enzo how wonderful it pairs with an Italian cheese.

Speaking of Enzo, make time in your week to have him cook a meal. The many courses were amazing, and we all agreed that his simple salad, with toasted sunflower and sesame seeds, is our favorite of all time. In fact, we all now make it at home. Enzo is gracious, humble and so talented. And Celia as sous chef and server completed this wonderful event. It will live in our memories forever.

As for the house, we each had our own space to retreat, which made the week exceptional. We quickly enveloped the Tuscan lifestyle, shopping daily for the night's dinner, having a leisurely multi-course lunch, swimming in the beautiful pool, and having great games of bocci, which everyone embraced.

We took a day trip to Florence, another to Lucca, and spent an afternoon at a nearby winery, where we tasted an incredible olive oil, ripe with the Tuscan bounty with just a touch of bite to make it unique.

Our week was enchanting. We have seen a lot of the world, and put the view from Le Mura in our top three places for beauty. We truly loved this Tuscan retreat. We all took a bit of Tuscany home to america, and plan on keeping it alive in the way we approach life. At least we can try!

Enzo making pasta as it should be done! Some bocci action! The swimming pool and Tuscan hills from the pool deck.

Le Mura, a real home from home

Left on 07/30/2012 for a stay in May 2012

We like to take holidays with our best friends. This year we decided to return to Tuscany. We love Tuscany and Tuscan Food. After careful research we chose Le Mura. The house went well beyond our expectations. First of all the house is bigger than we expected and very well appointed. The garden is beautiful and at the time we stayed full of flowers.
The village is a short walk and there are a couple of shops and two excellent restaurants, which is a real bliss for a morning coffee and means we could eat out and not have to drive home. The restaurants in the village were very reasonable. The pizzeria was much liked by the kids and alessandro's in the main piazza a real gourmet experience.
The owners Celia and Enzo greeted us and showed us around which was a lovely personal touch and meant we could also ask questions. They also made it clear that we could ring if we need anything but the holiday ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all. We hope to return to Le Mura before too long, a real home from home, relaxed and comfortable.

Great place for a family reunion in a lovely old farmhouse

Left on 06/16/2012 for a stay in April 2012

We, a family from australia and a family from England, had a lovely week at Le Mura. Our hosts Celia and Enzo were brilliant, so friendly and welcoming. The farmhouse was much larger than we expected, heaps of space inside and out for kids and adults, with fantastic Tuscan views. The house itself was full of history, surrounded by olive trees, and up a long winding road! Highly recommend to have Enzo and Celia to cook a traditional feast. Lots to see and do in the surrounding area, but definately need a car. Really enjoyed our week - would love to return.

Magical house hidden in Tuscan hillside

Left on 11/12/2011 for a stay in October 2011

Le Mura is a magical place.
A group of family and friends from australia picked Le Mura off a website - when searching for a place to hold a joint 50th birthday celebration.
The house is perfect for groups as it allows you spend as much time together as you like - and there is space to be alone when you need it. Our group was aged from toddlers to 60's.
Celia and Enzo prepared a special celebratory dinner using fresh, local produce-which really added to our experience.
Our friendly hosts also organised to have groceries in the house on our arrival and dinner for our first night which was great after travelling.
We would recommend hiring a car - as it is a little out of the way - but walking distance to Benabbio. We loved Benabbio and enjoyed our daily coffee and occasional meal in the village.
We hope to return one day.

What a find! A fantastic location with great views all around. The house is crammed full of character and charm. The gardens are lovely and the pool area a massive bonus. We had the pleasure of the owners Enzo and Celia cooking us an evening meal / feast. Well worth the additional expense. A lovely peaceful location but close enough to a friendly village to stock up on food and wine. Lucca is a short drive away and a well kept secret compared to Pisa and Florence.
In summary...you must go! Excellent for a group of friends or a family celebration.

Relaxation, sunshine, peace and food in abundance.

Left on 10/14/2011 for a stay in September 2011

We are a group of friends who have been going to France for a long weekend each year, but fancied a change. We have just booked our return trip to Le Mura after a fantastic 3 nights there. The house and garden are large, secluded and have everything you need, including a superb view and total peace and tranquility. There are provisions galore a few minutes drive away in and a good local shop a short walk away up the mountain. Celia and Enzo are two of the kindest people you are ever likely to meet and ended up spending much of their time accompanying one of our party to the hospital in Lucca. Enzo cooked for us one evening and we ate an Italian feast fit for a king in the garden. Lucca is about 20 min away and is beautiful. We hired bikes and had a great lunch at a place Celia recommended. If you like to relax and unwind, eat good food, drink good wine, then this is the place for you. I can't recommend it enough. I am thinking of going with the children next year too.

Left on 09/07/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Wonderful views from this enchanting old farmhouse. Spacious, comfortable, well equipped, with a very homely atmosphere. Charming owners who couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. Plenty of shady places to sit in the terraced garden, and a delightful pool. Easy walk along the shepherds' path to the little village with its bar, restaurant and shop, or a 10 minute drive down to the town below. It was very hard to leave when our week was up.

A wonderful place for the whole family

Left on 06/30/2011 for a stay in June 2011

From the earliest emails Celia did everything possible to answer our questions and make sure we had everything we needed. This included tracking down a source of oat milk for the youngest member of our family group who is intolerant to cow's milk.

Our family group of eight ( six adults plus a two-year-old and four year-old) arrived in stages at Le Mura on a spectacularly hot afternoon and were immediately made to feel welcome by Enzo and Celia.
We were all amazed by the setting which is far more dramatic than the photos on the website would lead you to believe.

The old farmhouse, with its many comfortable and spacious rooms and large kitchen, proved ideal for everybody. It felt like a family home rather than a characterless holiday let. The children enjoyed the toys, books and Dvds but most of all the freedom to explore the steeply terraced, tree and shrub filled garden. But by far the greatest attraction for everybody was the beautiful new swimming pool with its views across the steeply wooded hills of the Lima valley towards the peaks of the apuan alps. This was the same view we enjoyed eating out in the garden at the long table at the foot of the great stone steps to the front door. And it was here in the evenings that we sat and saw fire flies.

Although during our second week the weather changed to heavy rain and storms, nevertheless we continued to enjoy ourselves. There were excursions to Lucca and Barga by car and by train, walks through mist-shrouded chestnut woods mostly ending up in Benabbio, the nearest village, and food shopping in the open air market in Bagni di Lucca or, more prosaically, at the well-stocked Co-op. Benabbio's excellent bar and its pizzeria came in handy when, even with the best local ingredients, cooking for eight became a chore.

Apart from the unpredictability of Tuscan weather there was nothing we were unhappy with. All we have to do now is get six adults to make room in their diaries for a return visit.

The villa is very comfortable, clean and charming. The grounds are lush, the pool is divine and the views are stunning. Pictures do not do this place justice!! It's centrally located for easy day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Florence and all throughout wine country. The owners, Celia and Enzo are a delight to talk to and are so gracious and helpful in planning your trip. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone and will no doubt make it back again! My husband and I stayed at Le Mura with our 2 daughters, our sons-in law and their 4 children - age 1½, 2½, 3½ and 5½ - for a week. We had a wonderful time. The house was perfect for us with lots of space. The children had a marvellous time in the garden - especially the little childrens house was a great succes. Our hosts did their utmost to make us feel welcome and as we arrived late the first day arranged to have dinner delivered to the house the first evening. The view from the house was spectacular and the towns Bagni di Lucca and Lucca is well worth a visit. We would not hesitate to go back to Le Mura some day.

      Warm welcome at Le Mura

Left on 11/17/2010 for a stay in October 2010

Le Mura provided an ideal base for a group of food-loving friends to enjoy a long weekend break in October.
The house is lovely - simply but very comfortably furnished, spotlessly clean, has a fabulously well equipped kitchen and lots of interesting historical features and offers great views over the valley. We had a couple of wonderful evenings in, cooking dinner which we enjoyed round the enormous kitchen table and then drinking delicious local wines beside the cosy fire late into the night.
What made the weekend particularly special for us was the warm welcome we received from the owners, Celia and Enzo. They were happy to help in any way - stocking the fridge for us, greeting us in person depsite our very late evening arrival, and providing all the information we needed about local places of interest, shops and restaurants.
Altogether, a great venue and I hope to return soon!

This was our second visit to the wonderful Villa Le Mura. Celia & Enzo are the most marvellous hosts. We arrived off a late flight but Enzo was there to greet us with a roaring fire and Prosecco chilling in the fridge. It's a perfect place to unwind & recharge your batteries. You need never leave the house & gardens, or venture further than the lovely village! The kitchen is fully equipped to rustle up long lazy meals from delicious local goodies. Next time we might take advantage of a local chef coming in to cook dinner for us! We roasted chestnuts from the woods and ate sweet figs Celia picked for us from the tree right outside the kitchen. We will definitely be back next year!

This trip was to celebrate my mothers 80th birthday and my parents first trip to Tuscany, I wanted it to be special and Le Mura did not disappoint on any level. The breathtaking views and the comfortable very family friendly house with grounds to wander in and dream of retirement. The pool was ideal and had it not been for 2 days of slightly inclement weather we would not have left the house and grounds. Ideally placed for touring and close to Pisa airport we will be telling our friends and I am sure we will return. Thank you to Celia and Enzo for a wonderful week.

      Magical Tuscan Farmhouse

Left on 09/15/2010 for a stay in August 2010

Twelve of us ranging in age from 18 months to 70 spent an idyllic week at Le Mura towards the end of august. Despite the hot weather the cool house, the elevated position on the side of the mountain and the pool kept us all very happy. It was sometimes hard to prise the three teenagers away from telly and computer games but even they could not resist enjoying the vista of wooded mountains and valleys whilst swimming, or the delights of dining on the terrace by sunset.
Nothing has been done to spoil the original character of the house - which is that of a farm rather than a residence - but this only adds to its friendliness; you cannot but feel at home here. The large garden sloping down from the house and filled with olive and fruit trees is wild rather than formal, and equally perfect for children's games or adult peace and quiet. At the right time of year you may be lucky enough to pluck a perfect ripe fig from the tree bordering the terrace, which of course you would eat with a slice of local prosciutto from Viviana's shop in Benabbio, ten minutes walk along a grass path and local road. Here you can buy basic foods, including a good range of local produce, including vegetables and salads grown in the village. The same walk will take you to a friendly first class restaurant serving local food as good as you can get in the area for an amazingly reasonable price. For more extended shopping, ten minutes in the car will take you to Bagni di Lucca by the river, where where you will find what you need in the small shops and supermarkets.
There are beautiful hilltop villages to explore, many with fascinating churches; there are endless walks in the surrounding wooded hills and valleys; you can follow the river Serchio down to the uniquely walled town of Lucca, half-an-hour away; and not much further are the world renowned Pisa and Florence.
You can't fail to be happy in the place, and like us, you'll not want to leave.

There were 5 adults and 4 children under 4yrs on our trip.We decided not to travel around the area.It was a family holiday for us to all"chill" out.The Villa was spacious with a rustic charm to it.There was a magnificent panoramic view over a river valley covered in forest. Our very friendly hosts Enzo and Celia could not have done more to assist us with any queries we had.The weather was changeable for a couple of days as we were there off season but the sun regularly broke through and we all enjoyed the swimming pool and the view from it.We self catered and were able to obtain our provisions from a local shop and also from Bagni Di Lucca. It is advisable to have a car but we decided just to remain in and around the Villa area, to read, play boules, drink Chianti, take photographs and enjoy walks in the fresh air.The children played hide and seek in the garden while Granddad tried to find them. The by word for us was to have a tranquil holiday which we achieved. The children enjoyed a week that was like a throw back in time with no television(although it was available)lots of reading and games and plenty of exercise.Just like "Lord of the Flies" they were keen to find one of the wild pigs(boars) that occupy the surrounding countryside.Fortunately we didnt confront one but found their tracks. My daughters are keen photographers and enjoy capturing shots of the local fauna which was diverse and smelling the abundant wild flowers and herbs. So now its back to suburbia.Ho hum

      A very special Place

Left on 03/19/2010 for a stay in September 2009

We have just come back from our fourth holiday at Le Mura. We keep returning to this house with family and friends. The house is perfectly situated for sightseeing - but often we just relax there - the pool must have one of the best views in Tuscany, and there are many good local walks. Eating on the terrace is a delight and a birthday meal cooked for us there, sampling the local village recipes, was a highlight this year. The short walk to Benabbio village is a delight and the restaurant run by a friendly family. The house is very spacious and the toys, books and Wendy house enjoyed by the children. We all became very competitive on the boules pitch. Celia, Enzo and the team keep the house beautifully and run to a very high standard. They are always most helpful and Enzo's knowledge of local history has helped us discover the local secrets. This beautiful much-loved family house retains its original character but is made comfortable with simplicity and taste and never fails to delight us even on a winter visit when we had our meals around the large farmhouse table by the wood fire.

Left on 03/11/2010 for a stay in June 2009

The house is beautiful - stone-built and unspoilt by reconstruction, with large, beamed rooms and a traditional kitchen. The views, over the deep valley and tumbling river, are exquisite. We loved exploring the villages that cluster the hillsides. Each one has some convent, church or castle of interest. Benabbio - a short walk from the house along a country road - is typical. It has a delightful church in a tiny piazza, with a fine triptych, in its original frame, by some forgotten master. We visited Lucca and Pisa - towns rich in art, beautiful buildings and historical associations - on leisurely day trips. But much of the time we just spent by the pool, enjoying the views and local wine, and wandering the grounds with their olive trees, orchard and grassy slopes.

The owners, Celia and Enzo, had everything prepared for us in advance, welcomed us on arrival and offered us their assistance. It was a memorable week and we look forward to returning next year.
