Description from the owner

You cannot get enough of this view. From sunrise to sunset, the islands, bays, and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean display their changes from moment to moment in the eternal rhythm of the tides. It is our pleasure to share with you an ideal location to enjoy this seaside spectacle.

Twenty-seven acres of green meadows and forest capture the peace of unspoiled nature. The property slopes gently down to 1400 feet of private waterfrontage. At the tip of a headland you will find the boathouse and the wharf.

2nd Paradise Retreat was exceptional in its service, scenery and

Left on 02/01/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Ralph was exceptionally welcoming, helpful and accommodating. He was flexible with the check-in time, prompt in responding to emailed questions in advance of our stay, and more than willing to help us plan and map our activities. (Regrettably we did not get the chance to meet Katharina, although through Ralph she gave us beautiful and delicious chocolates.)
The Loft home at 2nd Paradise where we stayed was well-equipped, cozy and clean, with a lovely view of the surrounding land and water. We enjoyed kitchen's amenities and appreciated the consistent, convenient availability of heating wood. It was comfortable, well furnished and nicely decorated.
Second Peninsula is a lovely area. The 2nd Paradise Retreat has access to a dock and boat house and is in walking distance of scenic beaches, forests and farmland. The Josts' land is also a relatively short drive from the quaint towns of Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, where we found all we needed in terms of groceries, gas stations, shops and restaurants.
I hope to return -- I imagine it would be beautiful in all seasons.

      Wonderful Family Christmas Gathering

Left on 01/15/2013 for a stay in December 2012

We had a wonderful time at the Farmhouse Dec 26 - 28th, 2012. As the Family Home was not going to be able to accommodate the 23 family members that would be attending this year, we used the Farmhouse as the secondary Home. It was Perfect!! Lots of bedroom options and lots of room to spread out and play games. The grounds were wonderful as well and lots of nice places to walk. I hope everyone plans to come for Christmas next year so we can do it again.

My new hubby & I were on our honeymoon & we definitely found paradise at the retreat! We stayed in the loft & we were amazed on how spacious & cozy the loft was (with comparing it to the video tour we saw on Second Paradise Retreat's website)! What really was great but different to us was the wood stove..it's a Kachelofen stove like they have in Switzerland. We were astounded on how well they work!! The view from the cottage was amazing as it looked out onto the atlantic ocean! We only ate out twice out of our 4 night stay as the kitchen in cottage was supplied with it all (except food of course)...even spices, & coffee! The owners, Ralph & Katharina even had a lobster pot & tools for us to use! The service was excellent & they accommodated us with us arriving earlier in the day! Overall...2 thumbs up to the cottage, the view, the trail by the alpacas & llamas that lead to the wharf & mostly the owners for being so nice & having (& maintaining) such a beautiful piece of property with the little neighborhood of cottages!!! We will be back!

The loft (front) (side) I just stepped out the door :) The wharf

Words hardly do justice to this amazing vacation destination. We arrived late on a Saturday after 3 days in the car and were warmly greeted by Ralph who showed us to our cozy Blue Cottage and told us about all that we would need to know during our stay. We got to hike, kayak, read, relax, unwind and simply "be"! Each morning we enjoyed our coffee on the deck while we watched the Llamas graze in the field below. After a long day in Halifax, we were so happy to return to our cottage in paradise. The feeling that we got from being there will carry over in to our every day lives and bring a sense of harmony. One of the most important things is the fact that they strive to leave a small footprint on this earth and that is what all of us who share this earth ought to strive for as well. Lunenburg was only 10 minutes away by car for groceries and shopping. We also were able to take several good day hikes that were within 20 minutes of Second Paradise. ~love it here!

Our family gathered at 2nd Paradise Retreat to vacation and celebrate our daughter's wedding on the site. We had a wonderful experience.
Our hosts Katharina and Ralph were most accommodating and helped us plan and set-up for the events, and enjoy the celebrations with us.
Our entire family stayed in the farmhouse which was perfect for us; the rooms were spacious, very clean, and furnished with all we needed.
The scenery is beautiful, the site peaceful and relaxing. The town, Lunenburg is close by for dinners out or shopping.

We held our wedding here over a weekend this past summer. Could not have asked for a more perfect location or friendly hosts. It really is a magical place to gather with friends and family and relax by the beautiful nova scotian seaside. The farmhouse, loft and cottages are all wonderfully equipped and each has a total sense of privacy. This is a great place to stay and experience what nova scotia is all about.

Wonderful, relaxing experience in beautiful setting.

Left on 09/13/2012 for a stay in August 2012

First I should say that Ralph and Katharina are exceptional hosts. Their decision to open Second Paradise Retreat, a truly unspoiled property, to vacationers should be considered a gift.

My family of 5 had a great time. We stayed in the yellow cottage. My oldest slept on the futon in the living room but it did not feel too tight at all. The smaller space indoors promoted family togetherness and the outdoors promoted the free running of my 5 and 10 year old.

The grounds are lovely (I walked them every morning) and the view from the porch never gets old. The kids "visited" the llamas, watched for deer, eagerly searched for smaller wildlife and kayaked.

The kitchen is small but fully stocked for cooking. Plus there is a grill on the porch and a fire pit steps away for making smores, of course.

The Second Peninsula, itself, is also beautiful and there is a nice little beach close to the Retreat. Also close is the historically significant and beautiful town of Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Blue Rocks (a picturesque fishing village) and the Ovens (sea caves). All worth a visit.

For us, the time spent was a perfect mix of relaxation and site seeing. We hope to return.

      Two notes:

The day we left there was going to be a wedding on the property. I think the property would be lovely for a special event. And with enough lead time you could probably grab up the cottages, farm house and loft at the same time.

While we were there, Ralph asked us to kindly separate our trash--recycling, compost and waste. We happily did this. We do not compost at home and I was pleased by how much less trash we produced. When we returned home (in an urban setting) I went on line, found and hired a company to pick up our compost.--Another gift of permanent positive change.

It was the perfect spot for all 17 of us, and we could not have had a more enjoyable time. Katharina & Ralph were great, the farmhouse is cozy and beautiful, the scenery, outdoor space, row boat, kayaks, kite flying, shell, rock, and crab hunting a delight.
We have all been talking about and anticipating our next visit.

The property has been set up in such away that you are not aware if there are others staying at the nearby cottage or farm. The sounds of birds and the wind were all that we heard.
Ralph was there if we needed anything but not at all intrusive.
We would gladly return and this time we would find time to try the kayaks.
We slept really well with the combination of fresh air and good beds.

A clean, quiet and comfortable escape. The cottage was modern and spacious with a cozy personal touch. Our kind host was welcoming and accommodating. Lots of room for the kids to run around and explore. Happily felt very far from the buzz and rhythm of the city, and experienced some of the most silent and dark nights I can remember. From the deck, the sparkling atlantic ocean was visible in the distance, and we watch hummingbirds & deer passing through. Hope to return someday soon. Nova Scotia's south shore is magic!

Adam: If this is second paradise where is the first?
Ralph: According to legend it was lost.
Adam: I'm glad you found another.

Just shared a wonderful weekend here with friends and family for a wedding of about 60 people, half of which stayed overnight on the property. Calling the farmhouse spacious is an understatement; if you wanted to get cozy it could sleep 20+ itself. The scenery is of another realm; I forgot to take pictures of people. You will truly not want to go home.

Most of all thanks to Katharina and Ralph for sharing; they were wonderful hosts.

I stayed two nights with 19 girl friends. We enjoyed the convenient location on Nova Scotia's South Shore, the open vistas to the cove, the llamas and alpacas and the comfortable farm house and two cottages. We sang in the evening by a bonfire, which was easily made because a supply of dry wood was available, and we looked at the stars.
There was lots of space inside the farm house for us to enjoy a variety of card games and laughter. I'm glad we found the 'paradise'

Our family celebrated my parent's 60th Wedding anniversary here and we will never forget how lovely the place was. Between the areas to walk, the rowboat and the kayaks, there were plenty of ways to explore the property. My daughters even saw a seal who popped up to see what was up while they were kayaking. We shopped in Lunenberg, went flounder fishing using traditional techniques, went whale watching, painted and explored the amazing natural beauty of Nova Scotia. The Josts were fantastic hosts, leaving us with cell phones so we could call if anything came up, but also allowing us to enjoy their property.

      We can't stay away!

Left on 02/21/2012 for a stay in February 2012

Initially, I started coming to 2nd Paradise with a group of close friends every November; some having come from various parts of Ontario to join us. It has become so special to us, almost a second home, that we now have two other groups, who enjoy this beautiful spot several times a year. In short, we can't stay away!

Whether it is morning coffee on the expansive verandah, watching the deer and llama feed while savouring the sparkling of the sun on the oceanfront, or simply enjoying the morning calm in the gorgeous country kitchen, lined with windows overlooking the fields and water, it is a place of repose; of sanctuary. 2nd Paradise is exactly what you make of it: fabulous, leisurely meals with people you love; a place of quiet contemplation for writing or reflection; a welcoming space in Nature in which to enjoy long walks; rock collecting; shopping in nearby Lunenburg and Mahone Bay; or reading in solitude...it is each of these places. The Farmhouse is perfect for large groups, families, or any combination of loved ones.

Ralph and Katharina Jost are always on hand to provide anything that may be needed, are quietly and efficiently accommodating, and are willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure the utter satisfaction of your stay. The new addition of wi-fi ensures that even the busiest of people can stay connected, if need be.

2nd Paradise is the loveliest of places and my little group and I would recommend it to anyone in the highest possible terms. It can be your home away from home.

The owners obviously pay a great deal of attention to caring for the environment in every detail of daily living--something we could all learn from. To say that the surroundings are beautiful does not do justice to this wonderful ocean setting. Retreat from the bustle of urban life well describes this lovely place.

We stayed at the Blue Cottage for a long weekend. We had great weather so we were never stuck indoors. Very clean and the hosts are attentive and yet mostly unseen. We made use of the kayaks and boats everyday and built campfires with the pre-chopped wood. Great place for a relaxing couple of nights. There are two bedrooms, but realistically the place would seem a bit crowded with more than 2 adults as the living space is small. Kitchen is new and well-equipped.

      Sunny, spacious, serene :-)

We were looking to stay in Lunenburg for a weekend in august. Second Paradise was recommended to us and when I saw pictures of The Loft, I thought I'd be lucky if it was available; but I enquired and to my delight it was.
On entering the loft through the sunroom, the first impression you get is how bright and airy it is. It will make you smile. The Loft is a huge room with a "room" in each corner; kitchen & bathroom, bedroom and sitting area. The wide space in the middle of the room is amazing. Twister anyone?
I loved how big the bathroom was and don't worry, the rubber on the bottom of the door prevents any water from getting out; I didn't know this and had the water sweeper with me while I was showering, sweeping frantically at the door every few minutes...Lol!
The kitchen was well stocked (minus food of course) and there was some empty space under the counter on the right that would be perfect for a mini fridge. (currently, the fridge is in the boiler room near the entrance). The bed was very comfortable and there was even a mini library for the guests. I think the only thing missing was a board game (there was a pack of cards though) :-)
We enjoyed the large deck in the evening and I recommend bringing bug spray or mosquito coils.
All in all, a great weekend. I will definitely want to stay at The Loft again the next time I go to Lunenburg.

we had an excellent stay at the 2nd paradise retreat. we loved the loft. we stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed the use of the kayaks, the bikes, the kitchen (we prepared all our breakfasts and 1 dinner - and had amazing meals in Lunenburg the other nights). we were so happy to relax in the privacy of the loft overlooking the gorgeous views of the ocean and the farm property below.
i would highly recommend staying here and have already been spreading the word.

Salmon sisters reunion in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

The property here is just beautiful! My husband and I loved the farmhouse. We had eleven people staying all together with only two full bathrooms and it worked out beautifully. My three other sisters including their children are wonderful cooks so we ate at home every night except for one or two nights. We dined on the local specialty of scallops and also many delicious fresh vegetables found at the local farmers market held every Thursday. The view from the farmhouse includes all kinds of birdlife, deer and the alpaca and llamas that belong to the owners. The view of the peninsula is right in front of you. We went biking, boating and hiking in the area. We loved it and it was very relaxing. The beds were very comfortable and were made wih beautiful clean sheets and linens.

      A Great Getaway

A very great value for the price. We stayed in the Blue Cottage which was a good size for our Family of Four. It is about 10-15 minutes outside of town (Lunenburg) down a very scenic route.

It should be noted that this is a bit of a rustic experience as the cottages and grounds are kept fairly natural and not overly manicured. We liked this about the property. Our kids loved trying to feed the llamas and picking snails on the shore.

Second Paradise was the ideal location for our symposium - the setting as conducive to thought and contemplation and there were a wide variety of activities available to provide balance. Ralph and Katharina were solicitous yet unobtrusive hosts. I will definitely return for a relaxing weekend with my partner and will certain recommend Second Paradise to friends, family, and other colleagues.

      Relaxing and superb art retreat

What a great place to unwind and relax in a healthy, nurturing environment. The bright and airy bedrooms look out over the pastures which slope down to the ocean inlet. The farmhouse is warm and cozy on cool wet days. When the sun comes out you are drawn outdoors to walk along the beach collecting seashells or take photos of the adorable llamas and alpachas. This was my fourth visit and Ralph and Kathrina did their utmost to ensure a fabulous stay.

      Scenic Retreat

Left on 04/28/2011 for a stay in April 2011

From the time I arrived, I felt myself relaxing and taking in the beautiful views. The place is very clean, nicely decorated and the well equipped kitchens and bathrooms make the stay enjoyable and stress free. The owners are friendly, welcoming and helpful. Located near both Lunenburg and Mahone Bay means that you can shop, tour and take in many restaurants nearby. Though, on the down side, in order to take advantage of many sites, you will need your own transportation - the location is isolated. However, this is a plus in my books because it makes the stay quiet and restful. The kind of place to read a good book, do a painting of the scenery or sit around the fire and kick back with good friends - like I did with my visit. Enjoy!

This was my 4th visit to Second Paradise with my art group. Each visit has been peaceful and restful, and the opportunity to take long walks between painting stints also makes it healthful. Ralph and Katharina are considerate hosts, and run a lovely establishment. I hope to go again next year!

Second Paradise is a wonderful experience.

Left on 04/25/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Our group has enjoyed our annual 'painting retreat' at Second Paradise for several years. Ralph and Katharina always make every effort to ensure our comfort during our stay. The rooms in the farmhouse are simple yet complete. The cabins are modern and efficient. All the accommodation is spotless. The Josts are environmentally conscious and respond to their idyllic surroundings by practices of conservancy. They are delightful hosts. We paint during our stay, and sometimes request extra tables, etc. Ralph always is ready to help us with our needs. Second Paradise is quiet and secluded in its design; a perfect venue to be alone for quiet reflection, yet also has bright and open space for get-togethers. It is also only a few minutes to Lunenburg, a Unesco world heritage site. For me, it is truly a perfect setting for rest, relaxation and inspiration.

I travelled with friends so I was able to see all the facilities available in this beautiful location - the farmhouse, cottages, the loft and the grounds. All rooms were comfortable and cosy. There were books and games available for guests; there are llamas and chickens and extensive grounds right on a lovely shoreline. So much to do.

Thanks you to our hosts who did everything possible to accommodate our every need.

Second Paradise is aptly named. Our group of artists has stayed at this beautiful place for many years. It is very well maintained and the price is right. Our hosts are welcoming and always glad to see us back. No better place for unwinding, getting back to nature and for the creativity it inspires. We'll be back.

We stayed in the Farmhouse with extended family for our daughter's wedding in Lunenburg. As it turned out, it was a perfect choice for a hurricane and wedding preparations and celebrations. The hospitality of Ralph and Katharina was generous and responsive. The farmhouse itself is amazing and in a beautiful setting. It felt like home. The only problem with our stay is that is wasn't long enough.

A few years ago a friend of ours introduced me and my partner to Second Paradise. We came back again this year and we are booking again for a short retreat in November. This will be our 3rd visit.

The property is lovely. The Jost's do their best to be as ecologically friendly as possible and they walk the talk. The cottages are all very clean and well-maintained.

The Josts are friendly and helpful. When our stove was not working Ralph came by several times to see how it can be fixed, gave us a couple of bottles of wine, and homemade bread etc. We have used the boat and kayaks and that worked well. We can't say enough good things...

      Truly a "Second Paradise"

Left on 09/07/2010 for a stay in June 2010

We spend a little more than week in the "Loft" in late June 2010. In hindsight, it was one of the best vacations we ever had. The spacious loft (with its marvelous masonry oven) provided plenty of space for the four of us and the wide open meadow in front of the loft with only the farmhouse in sight made it a soothingly quiet and relaxing experience. Katharina and Ralph were very friendly and helpful in all regards (and their welcome yeast cake was very delicious, too).
The areal offers direct water/ocean access, but (being protected by the First Peninsula and several small islands) does not have the roughness of other places on the East coast that are directly exposed to the full wind.
The kids loved the canoeing and the camp fires we made every evening (with all the pre-chopped wood that Ralph had for us). Overall, we can do nothing else than highly recommend this place for everybody who truly wants to get away from it all for a little while. Or, actually, better we keep it to ourselves and don't tell anyone about it :-)

      Get away from it all!

Left on 04/23/2010 for a stay in January 2010

2nd Paradise for me is paradise. Period.

Four houses, all a bit different in style and spaced for privacy on a huge parcel of land, allow you to retreat to your own personal schedule. We have stayed there on several occasions, in the summer as well as in winter. Every season is special. In the summer you can take one of their kayaks from the boathouse at the beach, BBQ with ocean view in front of the houses or walk to one of the nearby beaches. In winter, it's perfect for reading, sleeping, unwinding.

it's about 15 mins to Lunenburg and the next shops. Alternative shopping and some cafes and restaurants can be found in Mahone Bay.

The houses are well equipped, everything is there. Don't expect luxury, but convenient country living with nice touches. Also don't expect big screen TVs and cable. There is no useful TV reeception, but every house has a DVD player, and there is a small library of DVDs if you feel like curling up on a sofa with a movie.

The retreat maintains high ecological standards, so your "footprint" while on holiday will be kept to a minimum.

It's a great place and we will be back!
