Left on 01/02/2013 for a stay in December 2012
This was an excellent cabin stay for us. Perfect location right on the Shenandoah River. The cabin had everything you could need. And everything works perfectly, especially the jacuzzi. Full disclosure on when my card was going to be charged, when the deposit would be returned, and when we could expect to check in. Cabin is in great condition - very clean and cozy, very comfortable. Lots of privacy in a great location just off the main road and secluded enough to give you that serene feeling...only the sounds of birds and piter patter of deer and other wildlife in the area. I absolutely loved this place and so did my wife and kids.

This cabin was all I had hoped for! It is a cozy, relaxing and quiet retreat! The cabin had all of the necessities we needed. Our favorite part was the hot tub. We hope to go back in the summer and take advantage of the river which is in the backyard.

My husband and I needed a weekend getaway and this was exactly what we were looking for. We grabbed some groceries on the way in and never left until we had to check out. My husband loved being on the river and we went fishing most of the time. He wants to come back and do the canoe down the river next time. The cabin was clean and cozy.

Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012
The place is very clean and does have a well stocked kitchen and closet.
I feel like there is one key detail I did not really consider before booking is that the cabin is 30 minutes from the main road but not in as private a location as we expected.
When I was a kid I spent many summers camping and never encountered the onslaught of insects we met while attempting to grill one of the nights. There is a warning in the book that makes mention of not opening the windows...they mean it. Being outside there is nice until the sun goes down, that may well have been a result of the late summer season change we were in the middle of but I feel it is noteworthy.
The only gripes I had of the property were the hot tub that was in need of professional repair and the grill being much older and more used than it was billed as, I found the propane tank empty but there was a backup in the utility room which I thought was a considerate touch.
We rented from this site and not from the sponsored site that is used by the managing company which complicated contacting the owners, as the only contact information provided in the unit is the management companies phone number.
Overall we had a relaxing weekend, I do not think we will be returning or recommending this location to others but I can see why some people might really care for this place.Response from Paul - 10/05/2012

We're sorry our cabin didn't work out well for this guest; like he says, maybe he would have been happier in the city. If you rent a cabin that bills itself as a rural retreat, being well away from the main road is a feature not a bug.
Speaking of bugs, it's true that at this time of year there are quite a few of them. We have birdhouses throughout the property to attract birds which eat the bugs, but they've left for the winter and the bugs haven't. We don't really want to chemically spray down the entire area since it's right next to the river, but we're very careful about keeping them out of the house as the guest noted.
As far as the hot tub, we didn't get a complaint at the time and aren't sure what he means. As it happens I personally used this hot tub just last week and it was working perfectly. Sometimes the display flashes an error code that our professional service techs haven't been able to figure out, but it doesn't seem to affect the function so it shouldn't be a problem.
We updated the contact information in the unit with several relevant phone numbers, though we haven't had a problem with that in the past. There is no separate management company - we ARE the owners but it's organized as a company, so maybe that's where he got confused. -

VirginiaBeautiful river view and access
Left on 09/14/2012 for a stay in September 2012
We highly enjoyed our stay for a girl's weekend at Bear Valley River. The cabin was incredibly clean, we enjoyed a well stocked kitchen, and having access to bikes, canoes and 2 tubes was very cool. The cabin has a beautiful view and shallow access to the river and the grounds were well maintained. While the area is secluded and quiet, you do have neighbors right next door so you don't feel too out of touch.
The owner was great about allowing my dog to come on the trip for an additional deposit, last minute, and for the most part was very responsive during booking. We did have some issues with the hot tub - while it was the perfect size for the 3 of us, it had been conditioned with way too many chemicals. We left that weekend with our skin dry and itchy and our suits bleached and essentially ruined. I didn't get a response from the owner on this issue, but I'm not sure what there was to do except ensure the hot tub chemicals are regulated for future visitors.
Overall we had a great stay. We appreciated the extensive DVD collection for rainy days, having the linens provided was incredibly helpful, and the beds were comfortable. The access to the river and canoes are worth the price itself.Response from Paul - 09/14/2012

Hi Kim and thanks for the feedback. I did actually receive your message and I responded. I'm not sure where the message went. I thanked you for letting me know and CC'd the housekeeper Sandy and the handyman Steve about it. We will definitely take care of it. We've never heard that before so maybe we put in a little too much chemical this time? In the future, if you feel that happen, you may be able to "fix" it by draining a bunch of water out and putting in fresh. That may dilute down the mixture. Sorry for the dry skin!

I was looking for a place to get away with my family that would provide us with an opportunity to enjoy each other without distractions. This was the perfect spot!!! Great fun outdoors that we all enjoyed for hours on end. When any one of us got hot or tired they were able to get inside to rest and unwind a bit.
Bear Valley River cabin is a great opportunity for any family to reconnect and get back to the root of family. I must say, I was very happy that it had internet and cable...that helped when the kids had their fill of family time :) -

Brampton, OntarioGreat Stay by The River!
Left on 09/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We had a great time at this cabin. When we arrived the cabin was spotless. All the amenities were just as described. The hot tub was awesome, enjoyed a few starlit nights there. The canoes were great although having my own wooden paddles I found the supplied paddles to be very heavy and a little difficult to use. Fishing along the river was lots of fun - we caught lots of little sunfish which kept everyone happy. We used the bikes to ride up and down the gravel road. A couple of times we came across deer right at the side of the road which was nice. The master bedroom was very comfortable, the kids beds not quite as comfy. The selection of movies was great as was the T.V. Wireless reception was great everywhere inside the cabin and for a pretty decent distance outside it. The kitchen was reasonably supplied with cooking utensils however I would recommmend adding an electric kettle for tea/coffee, etc and some mixing bowls. We made pancakes a few times and had to use a pot to mix in - not a big deal but we also could have used some bowls for popcorn, chips, etc. The riverside setting was beautiful, this was a great place to relax. There is a ton of bird life in the area which we enjoyed. The town of Luray & the caverns were close by as was the Shenandoah National Park. It was an easy drive from the cabin to get to both locations,. We enjoyed a great night at the Page County Fall Fair where we took in a Demolition Derby. We found all the poeple in the area to be most hospitable and accomodating. All in all, an excellent stay.

The cabin is in a great location by the river and is very comfortable and clean. We enjoyed using the canoes/tubes, unfortunately didn't get a chance to use the bikes and the hot tub temperature control wasn't working properly so it was actually too hot to use the hot tub. We'd love to go back in cooler weather and enjoy it. We also enjoyed the DVD library, watching several family movies with our daughters. I would note that the top bunk of the bunk bed is a little hard to get up and down from, and my 6 year old ended up sleeping on the floor because she was scared to get down from the bunk bed by herself.

Great small cabin right on river. Every amenity that you could want in a house - hot tub, canoes, tubes, bikes and very clean and well maintained. Very nice gas grill. Large grassy area. Location is about 20 minute drive to Luray so it is really getting away. It was everything advertised and on our next visit to the area, we would not even consider renting any place else. Both the owner and cleaning person, Sandy, very easy to work with and the renting process is very easy and professional. A+ rating!

Overall, our stay at Bear Valley was a positive experience. We enjoyed the scenery, activities, and amenities the cabin had to offer. It was wonderful that conoes were provided as well as wood for the camp fire. A few bumps in the road may have made it a little less relaxing than we cared to admit. Upon arrival the aC and hot tub were in need of repair. When the aC was fixed, the smell from the laundry room below permeated the entire cabin. We ended up not using it at all. The rental fee may be overpriced considering its location and lack of civilization, but anyone looking to "get away from it all” will find it very enjoyable.

The guest is correct that the A/C had an outage the day they were arriving. As soon as we learned about it, We did three things:
1) We immediately bought a brand new A/C window unit and installed it. It helped bring the temperature down considerably.
2) We had the cleaning crew bring in extra fans to help with circulation
3) We called A/C repairman to come out as soon as possible to repair the central system.
My apologies to the guest for any uncomfortable time during the week. I had hoped the window unit would help until the central A/C was fixed. I hope their next stay will correct any bad feelings about this one.
The hot tub has had an ongoing on again/off again issue that we have struggled to fix for almost a month now. The temperature heats up too hot and won't come down. We have spent hundreds replacing part after parts - including some parts twice - in our pursuit to fix it. We believe we may have found the solution in the past day. -

Myersville, MDFun and relaxation along the Shenandoah River
Left on 07/25/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My family enjoyed our weekend getaway along the Shenandoah River. The weather was perfect and the water felt great. We had fun canoeing, tubing, and fishing in the river and enjoyed our evenings around the campfire. We were visited by deer, cats, groundhogs, geese, and a fox, but no bears. The hot tub was nice and relaxing. The cabin was nicely decorated, clean, and roomy enough for the four of us. The only downside of the weekend was the central air conditioning quit working on Saturday afternoon making it a very warm 83 degrees inside the house and rather uncomfortable. We called in the problem, but the only solution was having to use a fan which did not help at all. It would have been nice if we were at least offered a refund for this inconvenience. If it wasn't for the aC breaking, we would have given a 5 star rating.

The guest is correct that they experienced an A/C outage, but the owners didn't learn about that until the morning they were leaving. Upon learning about it, we did the following things:
1) We immediately bought a brand new A/C window unit and installed it. It helped bring the temperature down considerably.
2) We had the cleaning crew bring in extra fans to help with circulation
3) We called A/C repairman to come out as soon as possible to repair the central system.
Obviously, this did little to help this particular guest since they were transitioning out. I have reached out to the guest with a 15% discount on any future reservations. My apologies for the warm non-A/C air on Saturday night. I know how uncomfortable that can be, particularly during this time of the year. -

This cabin is well located, right on the river with a level lot. Accommodations were very clean, and the cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The location is perfect, the property condition is excellent, and the outdoor hot tub, gas grill and on-site laundry are added amenities. We had an unexpected issue with the hot tub t-stat, but property manager was immediately on it, got a part overnight and fixed promptly. Great customer service. Highly recommended. I've stayed in other properties in Luray before; Bear Valley is among the best!

This cabin is everything I expected and more. It was clean, cozy, and beautiful! I loved how the cabin is right at the river. I enjoyed the two firepits (one by the river and one closer to the cabin). The hottub was wonderful on those chilly nights. Also, having access to the bikes and canoes was a plus! I don't have anything negative to say about this cabin, and will definitely be returning!

Had a great time at your cabin. Took advantage of the canoes two days. Hot tub was great. Bed comfortable, gas fireplace was nice in the evenings. Built campfires two nights Riverside campfire pit was covered in water the 3rd day so we used the upper one. Sandy is a gem. And Steve arranged to get us and the canoe up to the bridge for a great trip.I like to have open doors and windows,so no screen on the door and keeping the windows shut was my least favorite part of the cabin. Also cabin is a good 20 minute drive from town,so it is best to bring your groceries and maybe an extra fry pan. We did eat in town one night it was raining at Rancho Viajo. Very good mexican. Older people and small children might not like the steps to the cabin.

This cabin had everything we needed for a wonderful and relaxing weekend. We enjoyed the river right outside the back door, the gas fireplace and the hot tub. The place was so clean and comfortable. It's on a dirt road, and we took long walks with woods on both sides. Although we didn't use the kayaks or bikes, they were there for our use. The houses are not close together, but the neighbors were friendly and invited us for a smore over the firepit. Loved it and would definitely go back.

This cabin was well-equipped with everything my husband, daughter, and I needed for a carefree week of relaxation. They did a great job of anticipating needs that will arose during our stay. We literally didn't leave for the entire week and had everything we needed and plenty of things to keep us busy (canoes, hot tub, fire pit, and an extensive DVD collection to name a few). The view of the river and mountains from the porch is breathtaking. By far one of the best stays I've had in Luray. We will definitely be returning soon!

Good location and nice house. Child friendly, the crib was very helpful.
Hopefully, the switch turning on the fireplace will be marked as such soon, quite counterintuitive.
We liked the photos showing the hot tub covered, but it was not so in reality. Maybe (?) a nicer view, but it was raining on and off, so having it downstairs would be helpful. By the way, same about the grill.
Overall, good place and sweet memories. Should be even better in spring/summer, when we can use the canoes. -

We had a wonderful weekend at Bear Valley Cabin in Luray. From the minute we walked into that cabin till the moment we left everything was great. The cabin is just as you see it in the pictures. Very clean and organized, anything you need is there. The jacuzzi was wonderful and clean and we had a great time taking the canoe out on the river (which is right in front of you). I really enjoyed having dinner each night out by the fire in the yard and watching the sun set on the river, absolutely beautiful. The town of Luray is not that far away if you want to go see Luray Caverns, go shopping or stop to have lunch. We had such a relaxing weekend. Thanks for having us Paul, we will be back next year!!!

Left on 09/20/2011 for a stay in September 2011
An excellent cabin with all the necessary furnishing and ammenities to make for an enjoyable experience in the great outdoors! Our group (fathers and their sons) enjoyed the seemingly endless day around the firepit on the river; canoeing up river and the slow drift back down; showing off cooking skills in the kitchen and grilling skills on the deck; and spending quality time together discussing current and future plans as it related to each individual (adults/students).
I would highly recommend this cabin. In fact, I will be returning with my immediately family in the near future for another relaxing weekend of nature and togetherness. This cabin requires nothing more than for the individuals/family to bring the food items they wish to prepare and consume. It was nice to pull up in the driveway and not have to move the vehicle again until check out.
To the owner, thanks for making your cabin available for others to enjoy! I am already looking forward to my next visit. -

Left on 09/18/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We are a family of 4 adults (one teenager and one just beyond teens) and booked the cabin initially for 3 nights as part of our tour of Virginia. Before our trip Hurricane Irene caused a problem for a later part of our itinerary and so we asked if we could stay for an extra 2 nights. Talk about a blessing in disguise (for us!)! We were so thrilled with the cabin that after only a couple of hours we were all saying that we were glad that we didn't have to leave for another 4 days. It was everything we hoped for and there were extra touches, like the video library for the evenings, which were unexpected and very welcome. We have a hot tub of our own at home, but the one at the cabin is extra special and we really enjoyed it. The bikes were so much better than we expected and so was the rest of the equipment. The grand finale of our stay was a float down the river to point 13 on the tubes. It was absolutely great and we hope to return some day.

It was my daughter's birthday and wanted to do something special for her and my 2 sons since their dad is deployed to afghanistan. Cabin was very clean and comfy. We especially enjoyed the hot tub and the cool air after a day on the river. Grocery stores are close by if you want to wait to get food when you arrive and Luray was a wonderful little town. We traveled to Virginia to attend the first annual Hazzard Homecoming. With 3 young children, a hotel room that would suit our needs was hard to come by. For not too much extra cost, this cabin was perfect for all 5 of us. The kids loved the river and the hot tub as did the adults. The smell was a little musty but I can only imagine that's due to a damp environment. We bought some candles and soon adjusted. Overall, this was perfect for us and we would definitely considering renting this cabin again.

It was a bit of a relief to be near the mountains and 'on' the river during the hottest week of the summer!Bear Valley River Cabin has a beautiful location just steps from the S. River and leisurely tubing and canoeing offered a respite from the heat. The only small problem was the aC at the height of the day did not cool things sufficiently, but as the day progressed and got cooler the aC too kicked in-- just a bit uncomfortable for a few hours each day. It's a small cabin really suitable for only 4 people max but quaint and very clean with all the amenities: kitchen stuff, hot tub, mtn bikes, tubes, canoes... Our 1st cabin rental experience was very good and I would recommend it to anyone ready to sit back and really relax. Both Paul (owner) and Sandy(housekeeper) were a pleasure to work with.

The best 3 things about the cabin are Location, Location and Location. A beautiful piece of property and a wonderful portion of the river. Plenty of towels, linens and most everything else you need for your stay. The cabin is well thought out and perfect for a family of 4.
The canoes were great, hot tub splendid and plenty of outdoor furniture for an fire by the river. -

Hot tub was a winner especially sitting in it at night looking at the stars! -

The house is equipped with nearly everything a family could need. The location is quite remote: far from town, no cellphone, many mosquitoes. So if you are looking to "get away from it all", this is a good place. The river is entertaining and fairly safe for kids.

Absolute paradise. We came all the way from australia and it did not disappoint. Loved the tranquility, the amazing bird life, the stunning location on the river. We also really appreciated all the extras provided and made good use of the bikes, canoes, and especially the tubes. Floating down the river in absolute tranquility was bliss. Hot tub on the veranda was wonderful at the end of the day!

The place to go and get away from it all! If you like peace and quiet and a chance to be off the beat path this is the place for you. You can canoe on the river or go hiking nearby. Then relax in the awesome hot tub under the stars all while listening to the river rapids.

Very clean and cozy cabin right on the Shenandoah river with so many on-site options for relaxing and adventure including mountain bikes, canoes, porch swing, outdoor grill, fire pit, hot tub, flat screen TVs in every room, over 200 Dvds (all gear included onsite), etc. It is perfect for a family vacation, romantic getaway (like ours!), and a group of friends getting together. We will definitely be back soon!

My boyfriend and I enjoyed our mountainous time in this cabin in Luray. It was secluded like we wanted and so quiet, i scared myself a couple times at night, lol. The views were beautiful and look forward to seeing them in the spring. Everything in the cabin was accessible and the owners thought of everything from first aid to outdoor and indoor entertainment. Being inside the cabin was like being at a home away from home, comfy and cozy. although we both loved being in the peace and quiet, coming back home to the city called our names. We will return back very soon, thanks so much!

We had a fabulous short stay at Bear Valley River cabin. Location was perfect for us and the kids (10&7) loved the river. The cabin itself is a very high standard of everything and immediately welcomes you and is very comfortable. The finer details are what makes this place very special and the hot tub and outdoor fire pit were a huge hit. Perfectly placed for everything, including the Luray Caverns which are a must see.

The cabin was excellent. Clean, comfy-had everything we needed and then some. I forgot the corkscrew and sure enough there was not one but several in the drawer. The grill was great and I believe my husband said there was an extra tank "in case" we ran out. I am sorry to say that we did not use the hot tub but it looked great - clean-and we are picky about that. The setting was perfect-the river and mountains all around. The cabin was a bit closer to other cabins than I expected but everything worked out nicely. I would definitly re-rent this cabin in the future. Thanks so much for making our stay superb and something we will remember.

We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the cabin and conveniences, such as TV and DVD player in the kids room. Location along the river is beautiful, very quiet evenings and loved the close proximity to Luray and Skyline Drive. We wish we had a chance to use the hot tub!

Left on 10/26/2010 for a stay in October 2010
My husband & I have been renting cabins for a couple of years now in Va,with that said we have to say this is the best one by far. Between fire pit, the river, the hot tub it was a great time. To see that you had a extra tank for grilling just in case the old one runs out was great. The last cabin we stayed at did not have that and we ran out of gas mid way of cooking. So that was great. Its the little things that make a stay great or a nightmare and we feel you guys though of everything. The only thing that we have to say was that we though this cabin was some what isolated (we are from DC and would for like the alone time) but the was not the case. there was two other cabins very close to this one with renters in them. It was not a problem but we were surprised to find this out when we got there.
Great cabin, great host, we will be visiting again. Thanks -

We had a nice stay at Bear Valley Cabin. The location was fairly private, but within sight of three other rental cabins in the area. The view from the cabin was spectacular, and on cool October mornings, we could see mists rising from the south fork of the Shenandoah River. The cabin interior was extremely clean, very nice and well-appointed, although we missed not having an automatic dishwasher. The bed was comfortable in our room, the internet worked perfectly, the gas fireplace was very efficient, and there were a variety of movies and games on hand as well. The exterior was very friendly also. In addition to the wonderful hot tub on the upper deck, there was a gas grill and a glass patio table. On the lower deck, there were chairs, a two-person bench-swing, as well as an infant swing. Access to the utility and laundry area was through the lower deck, so we were able to wash out clothes in mid-vacation - a nice feature, so we didn't have to overpack. On the property itself, there were canoes along with all of the necessary accoutrements, bikes, and two firepits along with seasoned firewood. This place is a nice retreat from the busy world, and would be a perfect place to kick back and write a book from. The one thing that my significant other disliked the most was the drive to the cabin; the last 8/10ths or so of the road is rough gravel and quite dusty during dry weather.

We had a lovely weekend! The cabin was clean and cozy, and the hot tub was wonderful. The view of the night sky from the hot tub was beautiful, and we even saw shooting stars! The dvd collection was fun and the view of the river and mountains was outstanding. We've been to several cabins over the years, and this one has been the nicest. I would recommend it!

My family, including 3 boys (ages 7, 6 and 2) had a great 3 day vacation at the Bear Valley River Cabin. The owners equipped the cabin perfectly, and the amenities were outstanding. We enjoyed the canoes, firepit, great proximity to the river, indoor fireplace, DVD movie collection and of course the hot tub! The gas grill and washer/dryer were a plus. The reservation process was a breeze too. Absolutely would recommend this place to others. Thanks for a wonderful mini-vacation!

We took my teenager daughter with some girlfriends for her 17th birthday. The adults had a amazing time but the teenagers didn't get into the nature scene. The cabin was great, view was breath taking. We played in the river, enjoyed the bikes, and so much more. Playing another getaway very soon. Thank you so much to the wonderful owners for having everthing at the cabin.

Inside the house we found everything we wanted: airco, HD televisions with excellent DVD library , great beds, fully equiped kitchen, wireless internet. Outside we saw a bald eagle giving flying-lessons to his offspring. We had a marvellous time and plan to come back soon! The only thing was the hottub, it made a lot of noise and we would like to have the water cooled down for some refreshment.

We loved the cabin and will definitely stay there again. The location couldn't be better. Everything was as described in the internet sites that had the cabin listed. Two minor issues kept us from giving it a 5 star rating - one was with the hot tub, but it was not important to us since it was already so hot out and the same with the fireplace. We never could figure out how to turn it on. The instructions said to just "flick the switch", but never said where the switch was located. We are not familiar with gas fireplaces, so had no clue how to operate it without specific instructions. Again, it was so hot outside, we were not in a fireplace frame of mind, so didn't mind that at all.

My family had a wonderful 3 night stay at Bear Valley River Cabin. The location is terrific; pretty much right on the banks of the Shenandoah. We loved the kayaks and bikes as well as the hot tub. (It's great that you can control the temperature of the hot tub; we set it at about 95 degrees which meant that the kids could enjoy it.) The wonderful movie selection was also a big hit with everyone. Many thanks for sharing your cabin.

Looks like we picked the best cabin on the River. Great location. Beautiful yard. Nice amenities, and it worked out great. We canoed and tubed the River (be sure to scope out the take out locations beforehand). We caught fish, we saw deer in the yard, we hiked the Blueridge parkway, we visited the Caverns park, we biked the backroads and trails, and we enjoyed the hottub at the end of each day. Then we travelled to Washington DC for the City park of our family vacation. We couldn't ask for more.

We had a great stay in a beautiful and (for us city dwellers) very remote spot - we wished we had brought in many more groceries with us as there are no grocery stores near by! Once we adjusted to the remoteness we loved the beauty and peacefulness and restfulness of the absolutely lovely grounds and well stocked and well kept home. I wish we could afford to come back often!

This is a great vacation rental! Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids-11 and 14) was looking for a place that we could use as a base to visit the Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns, but also we wanted to fish and swim in the river. This rental filled all our needs and then some. It just as described in the listing plus spotless and well cared for. It has everything you need for a relaxing time. The warm and gentle Shenandoah River is right in your front yard. Watching the current flow lazily by, you feel the stress fade away and experience ultimate relaxation. Yet when you need it, internet, TV and movies are all there. We spent most of our 8 days at the house; swimming, floating, fishing, reading, hot tubbing, and cooking simple meals on the grill. We also visited the Park and the Caverns and enjoyed a exciting canoe and kayak trip down the river with the outfitters down the road from the house. Though the weather was hot we didn't suffer. The air conditioning was a welcome relief during the hottest part of the day. The house faces east which insures that the cool afternoon shade makes the river shore and the front of the house along with the hot tub, grill and outdoor dining very comfortable in the afternoon. I recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation on the beautiful Shenandoah River.

We had a blast. This place is great for kids and couples. My husband and I came out on our own last year, but we decided to bring the kids this year after we saw how much stuff there was to do. Even though it's close to Luray and the Shenandoah Skline, you don't even have to leave the property to have loads of fun.

Everything that the owners say on the listing is accurate and there's even a bunch of stuff they don't mention that's great. For instance, we stumbled on a notebook of movies with hundreds of movies in it - great for a rainy day. The hot tub was sublime. The canoes were great. I can't say enough about this place.
