Holland, MINoisy with bad internet.
Left on 05/31/2012 for a stay in May 2012
If you value quiet and reliable internet, you might skip this place. The apartment front door is just inches from the building front door and stairs of the building, so you hear every entrance/exit and stair ascent/descent plus the conversations by the mailboxes, which are just two meters away in the echoing entryway.
We were just unlucky to move in when there was a family of five upstairs with three children thundering around, stomping and jumping, but it means the little sound insulation in the building amplifies every sound. Simply putting felt on the bottom of the chair legs (they own the flat upstairs) would prevent that screeching sound every time a chair is moved, even by quiet tenants.
For the internet connection, it was very slow or not at all. At speedtest.net, this connection got a national grade of “F” with 1.4 Mb/s. The national average in Spain is 10.47 Mb/s. We get 5 Mb/s in the USa, which is enough. Obviously, having unreliable internet connection frustrates anyone who is used to being wired in to the universe.
Also needed (based on our experience of standard Spanish rentals): paper towels or napkins, manual juicer, reliable wall outlets (some need repair), and an updated/larger television. Why was every lamp unplugged?
Yes, it’s a functional, reasonably priced rental with very responsive owners. We did appreciate the midget-sized bathtub, clothes washer, and bidet, which is great if you have only one leg (it’s too close to the heater). The refrigerator door hinges should be switched to the left side so that it opens into the kitchen, not into the hallway.
Of all the many quiet, comfortable rentals and hotels with fast internet that we enjoyed around Spain for four weeks, this was not one of them. If you don’t need the internet, and if you don’t mind the local chatter, ambient noise from the street and the building, then you will likely enjoy this rental. Deposit return through Paypal took several days.Response from Suzanne and Santiago - 06/03/2012

We werw very sorry and surprised to receive your review. We were in touch at every moment of your stay and checked back in on the noise issue and it appeared that all was going quite well after your initial jet lagged mail. We are sorry that not all of our guests are as thoughtful as we would like them to be.
With regard to your comments on the internet, yes, there did seem to be some localized trouble in the building and we had the technician over the day after you mentioned this. The facts that you give in your tirade are incorrect regarding the norms in Spain but no need to go further into it.
At no point in time did you express the level of discomfort that you do in your review and so we are a bit dismayed. This is our very first negative review in 04 years of renting so it is painful, but always good to be kept on ones toes.
As for the midget bath and the one legged bidet...we had a good laugh. The bathtubs are standazrd sized, many apartments like ours have half tubs in fact. As for the bidet, they really were not invented for washing ones legs.......

Left on 01/26/2012 for a stay in December 2011
An extremely central location with loads of information from the owners, both face to face and from leaflets, pamphlets and books inside the apartment. The wi-fi was free, fast and unlimited which was a great help to us. The apartment is of a medium size but very comfortable. Having kitchen was important for breakfasts and although everything was there we didn't bother to use the cooking facilities. The only thing I could fault it on (and this is being quite picky) is the heating was temperamental. It kept turning itself off and as we were there over New Year it tended to get cold quite quickly but once reset it came back just as quickly - just a quirky thing we learned.

The apartment is close to atocha train station (10 minute walk) and "metro" 5 mins. Several decent sized supermarkets are within a 5 minute walk. The apartment is small but well equipped for a comfortable stay. The weather had turned a little cooler but the apartment heating made the place cosy. Beds are only "double" so couplae used to queen sized and larger may find it a little cramped. Whilst up to 7 could be accommodated, I would recommend no more than 5. If you are expecting to watch T.V. in English you'll be disappointed.

I feel bad writing a less than glowing review because the owner and manager were very nice, but this little place was a bit depressing to me. The neighborhood was good and the small flat was functional - we cooked meals and did our laundry, but for the money I would expect something nicer.

Dear Carrie, Thanks for your comments, we are quite surprised by them but accept all in good faith and in order to improve our guests stay. My only objection would be to your final comment. Our prices for 2 bedroom apartments are well below the average in Madrid and I doubt that you could find anything nearly as wonderful as our apartments for 25 euros per person. Our apartments are almost just as you describe, small, functional and clean, just what we advertise. Depressing is a term that I would never associate with our apartments and thankfully nor have our other hundreds of guests. Best wishes, Suzanne and Santiago

Left on 08/12/2011 for a stay in June 2011
I stayed here for 2 nights with my husband and 3 teenagers. It was convenient to walk to the metro stop atocha and atocha/Renfe. There were plenty of comfortable beds/sofa beds for each to have a bed. Suzanne and Santiago were terrific owners. Santiago met us at the apartment, explained everything and was very helpful. Both of them were available by phone. There were small restaurants and pastry shops around the corner. One tip: you will need to bring or buy soap and shampoo since these were not in the apartment.

Extremely nice owners. Try their best to accommodate your requesst. Check in process was painless. Location of the apartment is good. You feel like you are in a local part of the city versus a touristy part. Located 2 blocks from the atocha train station. Lots of restaurants close by. We really liked Bodegas Rosell it was our favorite . We also ate at Bar Soria, it was right on the corner, nice service and inexpensive. Supermarkets are less than a block away. Good bakery as well on the corner about a block away.

Left on 07/09/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We stayed here at each end of our Spanish holiday and were very pleased - the location near atocha station is great for transport links (both air and rail), and Santiago cheerfully let us check out very late when we completely forgot about our train to Malaga - a good sign of a relaxing holiday.
The apartments (we stayed in 2 different ones in the same building - preferred the ground floor one) are not fancy, but have everything you need and are a much better deal than a hotel. The main museums and the Retiro are within walking distance. -

Left on 06/26/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We stayed at this apt. near the train station in Madrid for four nights. It was very well appointed and well located in a quiet neighborhood, but within a 10-minute walk to central Madrid. It was an excellent base for our travels around the city. Definitely a good value. Suzanne and Santi were very helpful.

Our family of 6 took a "dream" vacation to Spain and I have to say, it was outstanding. Being we were such a large group, we decided it would be more feasable to rent an apartment and this place was perfect.. It was very central (very close to the train stations) and the check in and check out process was flawless. We got wonderful recommendations of places to eat and see from Santiago and it made our trip that more exceptional.

We had a short stay in this apartment (myself, spouse and adult son). We chose it mainly because of the location close to our daughter's apartment in Madrid. Then, we were most pleasantly surprised that the apartment was so nice. Very, very clean and well thought out. Not fancy, but homey and quite liveable. On a super quiet street (unusual for Madrid). Walk to Retiro, Prado, etc. Metro is also very convenient. Great bakery just around the corner.
We did not use the kitchen since we were only there a couple of nights, but it looks good - small, but well-equipped. Bathroom was super clean.
Good check-in with the owner's agent. Easy transaction via email.
In fact, I am renting this apartment again in april. -
