Brisbane, AustraliaFantastic Spot and Great apartment
Left on 10/18/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Our family (5 adults, 2 children) stayed in Hemingway Santa ana for 3 nights in September. The apartment was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was perfect with numerous bars and restaurants right outside the door. The Plaza Santa ana is also just metres from the apartment and a great spot for a drink and tapas where the children can play in the small playground. We also found the alberto Bar at the end of the street a great place for a drink and the kids loved the ice cream shop across from the apartment.
We found Eva very accommodating and the booking, check-in and security deposit process was very easy and well organised.
We would highly recommend this property for anyone looking to stay in a comfortable apartment in a great part of Madrid.Response from Eva - 10/19/2012

Good location but have reservations about apartment
Left on 10/12/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My grownup family stayed 3 nights in this brightly decorated but uncomfortable apartment. The location was good for accessing tourist attractions and restaurants. The lounge was extremely uncomfortable, as were the beds. Plastic underlays didn't help. Sheets were made of an unusual polyster fabric and the towels were rock hard.
I was extremely surprised that we had to sign a short term rental agreement. We have travelled to many countries in the world and this property is the first to request such a contract and that it specifically stipulated that holiday travellers supply their own toilet paper and soap ! Every apartment I’ve stayed in supplys toilet paper, soap, dish detergent, dish cloth & tea towel. Basic necessities like these are provided to make travellers welcome and encourages adherence to housekeeping.
I suggest reading carefully the conditions listed in their rental agreement as you are required to clean before leaving to get your security deposit back. Leaving the apartment in a tidy manner is a reasonable request but scrubbing and mopping floors is extreme. Oh by the way we found the previous tennants socks under the loung when cleaning. made sure everything was better thatResponse from Eva - 12/04/2012
Owner
Dear Helen and Matt,
As I explained to you on our e-mail conversations before your checked in, and as owners of the apartment and not an agency which, as you know, have their own terms and conditions you have to agree to when making a booking, and following the advice of other agencies where our apartment is advertised, we decided to make up a contract for short-term use to prevent damages to our apartment. Unfortunately, we've had some bad experiences with others guests before. We even had one teenager urinating from our balcony and the hotel director next door had to call us to advice about this.
It is NOT TRUE we do not provide with soap, and toilet paper. I recall explaining you we always leave 2 sets of toilet paper, kitchen paper and soap for both bathrooms and dish detergent upon arrival of all our clients.
Again, it is NOT TRUE you have to clean the apartment to get back your deposit. We ask our guests not to leave any perishable food in the apartment and take out their garbage bags to the container outside the apartment to prevent bad smell. As you mentioned, we request of our guests to leave the apartment in a reasonable manner as it is given to them upon arrival.
My family owns this apartment, where we’ve lived up until we had our 2 small children, reason why we moved to the outskirts of Madrid. Both me and my husband, along with my sister in law Lola, run the apartment, arranging the check-in of our guests and cleaning of the apartment and making sure they feel as comfortable as possible.
I really doubt you found a tennant’s sock under the sofa, because, as I told you, we take good care of our own apartment and our guests. However, if you did so, we apologize for this mistake and will make sure it won’t happen again.
As for the sheets and towels we provide, there’re made of regular cotton, but not an unusual polyester fabric. We always tell our clients we provide them with regular but clean linen and they are welcome to bring their own linen if they are used to using silk or other more sophisticated fabric.
Our beds may seem uncomfortable to some of our guests. I've recently been in a 4-star hotel suite in Toledo, Spain and found the mattress to be extremely hard, in my opinion, but this does not mean that other guests might not like it. Same thing happens here: unfortunately, we can't please everyone, even though we try our best, and even more with clients whom we know before arriving are not going to be easy, as it was your case.
• You asked if a friend of your son could leave his luggage in the apartment before check-in which is at 2. Before that time, my sister in law is cleaning the apartment. We accepted this proposal.
• Even though we arranged to meet at the apartment for the check-in at 2 you arrived 1 hour and a half late. Of course, our smiles were always on our faces.
• As for the 200 Euros deposit we ask for, and because we are usually working when guests leave, and I personally work at a bank, we always tell our guests we will send the deposit back to them through bank transfer of paypal account after their check-out and before 48 hours so that my husband and I have enough time to arrange our lives and our 2 small children, and check the conditions of the apartment. You suggested giving you back the deposit before leaving the apartment and tried our best to please you arranging my husband to meet with you at 11 am. That day we had a subway strike in Madrid and my husband was 15 min late to our meeting. Not even 10 minutes had passed when I received an e-mail from you telling us you were ready to leave but my husband was not there yet. You probably forgot when a few days before we didn't wait 15 minutes for you to arrive but an hour and a half.
• You asked if you could stay in the apartment after 11 am, time of check-out. We give the option of late check-out to all our guests until 5pm for an additional amount of 30 Euros, like similar short-term rental apartments do, only when available because sometimes we have people checking in and leaving the same day. In this occasion, there were no guests arriving that day, so we offered you this possibility, which you finally decided not to accept because you didn’t want to pay the extra fee. This is one of our house rules which is published in all webs where our apartment is advertised as well as on our own: www.hemingwaysantaana.vacau.com
To finish up, we really think some people should not rent an apartment and expect of it to have the same amenities as a 5-star hotel, because price, evidently, is not even close to what they'd had to pay in a luxury hotel. This is exactly the case when even though we tried our best to please you and your family, you pay us back with a review on our family apartment all made up and with no good intention at all. Luckily the great majority of our past guests enjoyed staying at our apartment and for that we are happy.
As I wrote to you after your check-out, we are very sorry you felt so uncomfortable in our apartment. We just hope you at least enjoyed our beautiful city.
Cheers.

Arizona, USAGreat location!
Left on 01/10/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Our family of six (4 kids ranging from 6 to 11) stayed here and had a great experience with the property. It easily accommodate us all with enough space for everyone. The apartment was clean and had all we needed to make our stay comfortable. The location was outstanding - you could walk to many of the big attractions in Madrid, and if the walk was too far, it was a very short walk to the Metro station. There were lots of restaurants close to the apartment, as well as a few small markets where you could get some basic groceries to tide you over when you didn't want to go out to eat. Overall, a great stay and definitely an apartment I'd recommend to others!

AspenGreat Location
Left on 12/19/2011 for a stay in October 2011
Condo was right off the Plaza Santa ana so not too much noise. Very convenient to most restaurants and museums (all within walking distance). Towels were threadbare and there was only one towel per person. We were there for a week. They need to upgrade linens. Sofa/loveseats were very uncomforable to sit on as they serve as futon beds and are lumpy. Showers had mildew and smelled moldy. Closet door was broken. A little more care and attention to the comforts on the inside of this unit would make this a really great place.

Dear Paul,
I'm quite surprised by your review of our apartment. We do and try our best to take care of our guests and when some problem has occur, which as you know, sometimes it's inevitable, we try to take care of it asap.
Sometimes people forget that this is not a hotel but an apartment with it's advantages and drawbacks. It happens that sometimes our check-out and bookings happen on the same day, and when in a hotel there might give you another room, in our case, we just can't. When there's been a problem that could not be solved when someone's checking-in, we let them know and if it's a mayor problem we even make a discount on the price.
As for the towels and linen, there are not top 5 but I can assure you there are clean and have no holes. In some other apartments they don't even provide you with a set of towels. However, we will check them all and replace them if we consider it necessary. You've been the first guest to complain about them.
I just want to make clear that you are paying for an apartment in an excellent location, as you pointed out. Hotels in the city center are much more expensive, but in this case you'll have your towels and linen replaced every day if you want.
Cheers. -

186363Fabulous apartment! Great Location! Beautiful Entertaining City!
Left on 12/11/2011 for a stay in October 2011
If you go on a city break isn't the whole point in being in the city right where it's all at? Well this apartment is right there. I love Madrid and this apartment's location is fabulous.
It's right by the very happening Plaza Santa ana and Huertas with loads of restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs and the theatre. I enjoyed some very good modern jazz in Cafe Populart (jazz nightly - free admission) just round the corner. Not only that, there are some pretty decent mini-markets, bread shops, and convenience stores just round the corner that will meet all your self-catering needs should you choose that option.
Atocha station; Reina Sofia Museum (Guernica); Plaza Mayor; Sol, all within easy walking distance. Anything farther away easily accessible from nearby metro station.
I would have no hesitation in staying here again or in recommending it to friends. The only caveat, also mentioned below: Madrilenians come out to play very late in the evening and stay out well into the early hours. Anyone over-sensitive to footsteps and chatter echoing off the walls of the attractive street this apartment is on might want to bags one of the two back bedrooms where you will hear nothing. I'm a townie so the sounds of the city are my lullaby. -

There were eight of us traveling together and we only needed a place in Madrid for the weekend (three nights). The Hemingway Santa ana was the perfect solution. First and foremost the location cannot be better. Walking distance to just about everything you need to see in Madrid; Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Prado, Reina Sofia, Palacio Real, Retiro Park, etc., etc. Three bedrooms, two roll-away cots, and a convertible in the living room; we actually could have fit two more although ten would have been a little crowded. The kitchen had everything we needed. All amenities were in working order and well maintained. Grocery stores, bars, restaurants, literally right around the corner. The only negative would be that the neighborhood's a little noisy at night, but if you are sleeping in any of the back bedrooms you won't hear a thing. Eva (the owner) was a pleasure to deal with and was very responsive to everything. Our security deposit was returned before we even left Spain. We would certainly stay here again.

This condo is in a great location on a wonderful picturesque street in Madrid made up of beautiful buildings and a great ambiance. We were a family of 7 ranging from 16 to 79 years of age and we all enjoyed this vacation home! It is located right around the corner from Hemmingway Santa ana Plaza that is full of cafés, restaurants, and a few lounges for nightlife. At the end of the street, there's another smaller plaza with great little shops and cafes were we had our morning and afternoon café con leche every day! The metro is close (only a 5 minute walk), a grocery market close by, and there is an elevator in the building for those days when walking the city leaves you too tired to take the stairs up to the condo.
The condo itself was clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The 7 of us were comfortable in the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo with the use of a portable bed in the living room. The bathrooms both had showers (one large and one rather small, but it did the trick). The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need to cook meals and a washer to do laundry (the kitchen is small, don't be surprised, but it's all you need).
Eva was wonderful, she had great follow-up during the booking process and was very hospitable upon our arrival. We would definitely recommend this vacation home to our family and friends, and would definitely stay there again ourselves!
