This is an awesome apartment in the perfect spot for seeing all of Madrid by foot. It's on a quiet side street almost exactly in the center of the city so even though you are right in the middle of things, the apartment is real peaceful and super bright. It's very comfortable and so unique looking - very different from anything you'd see in the States, especially the beamed ceilings and the artwork. The terrace is great - private as there's no one in surrounding buildings to see you and even though it's February we had breakfast out there every morning sitting in the sun. It's on the 5th floor so there are the stairs to be gotten up but they are not high and are wooden so we didn't find it a problem. Check-in was easy and the host was really accommodating in terms of our last minute booking and late check-out request. We found the place to be impeccably clean and the host even left us a nice bottle of Rioja as a welcome gift. It's very well equipped, the kitchen has everything you could need even for a longer stay and the grill outside was a real treat that we used one night to have dinner on the terrace. We thought it was a great value for the money and will definitely come back next time we're in Madrid!

Left on 01/08/2013 for a stay in January 2013
This is a wonderful apartment right in the heart of Madrid. Tastefully remodeled, it does truly offer all the comforts of home. It is located within walking distance of all the main attractions and literally a minute away from the main subway hub. Even though it is in a very busy street, because of its height and of the whims of sound waves, it is also very quiet (we were there for new year's eve and were not bothered by the party going on in the streets). It is also very sunny and bright, which makes it feel roomier than it actually is.
I would absolutely recommend this apartment. The long staircase can be a bit challenging but it's totally worth the effort. -

Paris, FranceVery central but with some unnecessary drawbacks
Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Overall, the apartment was a good place to stay. It's very central, reasonably easy to get to from the airport, the terrace has its moments, and the apartment itself has almost everything you'd need. But the best thing about this place is its owner, Sonia, who was very polite, thorough and helpful during the booking phase, who arranged for someone to meet us at midnight with the keys, and who also organised a bottle of champagne for our arrival (on request).
However, there are some things that could have been better with a little more effort from the owner, and which may affect your stay. Please note that these things will have varying levels of importance depending on the type of stay you're going to have. For example, if you plan to spend all day outside, including most meals, some of these points won't apply so much. But if the weather's terrible or if you're planning on staying in the apartment a lot, you might want to think carefully:
1. The stairs: I'd read the reviews and was expecting to have an Everest-like ascent, and while 104 steps is a lot, I live in Paris so it's not unusual. But if you're not used to stair-climbing and/or if you plan on going out and coming back several times per day, they could get tiring, fast.
2. The size of the apartment: While the floor space is huge, the vertical space is not. It's the top floor and the roof slopes very gradually from one side of the apartment to the other. I'm 6ft+ and found it a tight fit in all rooms (particularly the kitchen), with the exception of the living area, but even then I could only stand straight-up on one side of the room. This needs to be made clearer on the ad so people aren't surprised.
3. Cleanliness: While the floors and windows were clean and the bathroom had fresh towels, etc, there was a poor state of affairs in some parts of the house. The kitchen had milk that was opened, an almost-empty bottle of coke in the fridge, and some of the condiments/assorted foods were old or appeared un-useable. There were also clothes and personal items in some of the drawers. While that doesn't sound like much, I've stayed in many apartments belonging to other people while travelling and never felt so much like I was intruding in someone else's space. It just takes a little more effort on the part of the owner to rectify these things to ensure that the guest feels like they have a 'home away from home'. For example, provide a basic but essential range of condiments that are new; And put personal items in a cabinet or closet that's out of the way and not to be used by the guest.
4. The terrace: Again, after reading the reviews I wasn't expecting an awesome vista (it faces a building under construction), and with that in the mind the terrace was great. It's very high up so it's reasonably private, and it's a lovely place to have breakfast or drinks in the evening. But the morning and evening are the only times you could use it as there's no shade from the sun or protection from rain. Again, with just a little more effort on the part of the owner - e.g. putting up an umbrella or shade cloth - it could've been perfect.
5. The cost: We had to pay extra for air-conditioning. I don't mind paying an extra fee/carbon tax to offset the environmental costs of aC, but there's no way you could sleep in the apartment in summer without it. With this extra cost, and considering the other drawbacks, the overall price was high. -

Left on 08/07/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We stayed in the apartment for 12 days and 11 nights in mid July. It was above and beyond what we expected and we had a wonderful stay. It was so easy to book and Sonia (the owner) was so helpful in helping us plan how to get there from the airport as well as other useful information. When we arrived we didn't have any difficulties in obtaining the key and we found the apartment well equiped and contained everything that we needed to make our stay more comfortable.
Other guests have commented on the stairs - there are 104 in total as we counted them!! After a few days though they do get easier and don't let them put you off booking this apartment. It is in a prime location, literally just up the street from the Sol metro stop and everything was within walking distance. There was virtually no noise from the street below and we felt very safe at all times around the apartment even at 3am.
The heat in July was bedtween 35 and 40 degrees c however as a fan was made available we soon realised that we could place this in the living area which had the aircon unit and it kept our room cool at night. Another tip is to keep the bedroom windows and blinds down in the daytime! We had no difficulty sleeping or keeping cool.
We certainly would book the apartment again as it is exceptionally reasonable in price and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. -

Denver, COWe had a blast! Very nice place & so central right by Puerto Del
Left on 07/16/2012 for a stay in May 2012
So we loved Madrid. We loved just about everything about it, including this apartment. The apartment is just about 3 blocks away from the Puerto Del Sol and Gran Via. It also seems to be about 3 blocks away from everything - not really, but everything you want to see in Madrid is within walking distance: the Prado, the Palace, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park, and all the wonderful sights of this amazing city.
Back to the apartment: luckily I'm a bit of a gym-rat, so the stairs weren't too bad for me until about the third day, and by then it seemed that those "5 flights" are more like 8 with the landings as it's an old building. My 5-year-old didn't care, my 16-year-old did, but teenagers...what are you going to do. It's also a bit warm in the apartment and Madrid was having a very warm May, I don't know how hot it would be in summer - but probably pretty hot - especially in the bedroom - because it doesn't have an air-conditioning unit in it
note to tall people: My husband is 6' 3" and every time we left the apartment he hit his head on the light fixture (which gave us a very saying "Mi Braino No Bueno"!). Everyone one of us, from my son at 4 1/2 feet to my husband hit their heads on the ceiling beams - we learned very quickly.
The good: We happened to hit Madrid during the festival of San Ysidro (the patron saint of Madrid), so after watching fireworks in Retiro Park the first night we watched them the 2nd night from the terrace. The kids had a nice area and my son loved people-watching from the terrace and then eating at 11pm!
All in all, we would stay again. It was a blast, and so close to everything. We only took the Metro once, and that was when my shoe broke - but no worries there are a zillion shoe stores in Madrid.
It's all about location, location, location - where it's located makes those stairs seem like a fabulous memory and those bumps on the head no worries!!! Awww...I wish I were there right now!

Our party of 3 adults stayed in this apartment for a winter break in Madrid. We enjoyed the location which is within walking distance of the important sights and experiences of Madrid but which also allows visitors to learn more about life in Madrid than you do from a hotel stay. It was very convenient to supermarkets and metro if needed as well as shops eating places. The attic apartment is compact, but clean, light and furnished perfectly for a holiday stay. You do need to be ready for the stairs though we found them no trouble. We will definitely try to book this apartment when staying in Madrid again.

We knew that it was a five flight walk-up to the apartment so there were no surprises. But the small effort was well worth it.
The lead up to our arrival was absolutely hassle free. Emails were answered promptly and Sonia's detailed advice on getting to the apartment from the airport made the journey a breeze.
When we arrived Sonia left us with a wealth of info on the Sol area with tips on where to shop, eat, visit and of course, sip a drink or two.The apartment was fantastic. Everything was just as the photos depicted. To have the option of cooking for ourselves is always important and the well equipped kitchen allowed us to do this on a couple of nights. The terrace was certainly the deal maker for us. Whilst not overly large, it gave that little bit of extra space to unwind after taking in a days wandering around Madrid. The sloping ceiling was a minor inconvenience.
Sol seemed to be the heart of the city and the apartment was within easy walking distance of most major attractions.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Sonia's apartment to visitors to Madrid. -

Loved our stay at Sonia's place. Amazing location! Really enjoyed the terrasse & lots of windows. The internet connection was flawless. Sonia was so accomodating letting us leave our bags early the morning of our arrival so we could be free to sightsee before the apartment was ready for check in. Would recommend this place to anyone who is not scared of 5 flights of stairs! Helps work off all the good food!

Left on 12/30/2010 for a stay in December 2010
We stayed here for 6 nights just before Christmas. As reported by others, Sonia was indeed very helpful during our email exchanges in making our reservation and meeting our family needs (we have a disabled daughter). Unfortunately we never met her as she was on vacation herself while we were in Madrid.
The deposit was paid via PayPal, and Sonia gave us a note for the taxi driver on finding the apartment, where her friend met us at the door to the building. He gave us a brief guided tour and exchanged the keys for the outstanding balance in cash.
The downsides: The apartment is tidy and comfortably furnished, but the 104 steps to reach this roof-top hideaway are a real hurdle. The sloping roof beams are also a problem if you're tall, especially in parts of the kitchen and bedroom. The shower cubicle is a real tight fit for anyone over a size 12.
The Upsides: During our stay the weather was pretty cold (0C), but the central heating kept the place cozy. The Cable-TV/DVD provided some entertainment, and the WiFi internet access was fast. Usefully, there is a landline phone (for local calls only). The apartment is right in the centre of Madrid and just a couple of minutes walk from Plaza de Sol, and (in the opposite direction) up to the Grand Via. No where could be more central. Basic domestic shopping (milk, bread, coffee, etc) can be done in several local stores or in the basement supermarket of the nearby huge El Corte Inglés department store. There are many restaurants and a few tapas bars nearby. Most tourist sights can be reached easily on foot, but if walking is a problem the nearest Metro is in Plaza de Sol. Usefully there is also a stop for the 'MadridVision' hop-on, hop-off bus in Plaza de Sol.
This apartment is really at the centre of everything. In our opinion the Upsides far outweigh the Downsides and we recommend staying here (but be aware of those 104 stairs). -

The location of the apartment is great. You have shops and restaurants at your door steps.
The only bad is that the apartment is on the 5th floor, but more like the 7th and no elevator.
The terrace is nice but tiny not much to see but a run down building. -

Loved this appartment!
The location is great. I could walk to Puerta Del Sol, all the shops on Fuencaral, restaurants and the parks. It was perfect for someone new to the city. My host, Ms. Sonia Torreira was very kind in suggesting evening entertainment and day-time sight-seeing.
The apartment is clean, comfortable and the view from the balcony is to be remembered! I especially enjoyed having my coffee out there and experiencing the buzzing city life below me...the six flights of stairs were a welcome excersice after all the good food in Madrid! l would highly recommend spending your vacation there! -
