Description from the manager
This impeccably decorated five-star property offers its guests the unique opportunity to reside in the historic building of Madrid's Plaza Mayor. Constructed in the early 17th century, and restored in 1790, the Plaza is the heart of the "old city" or what is referred to as Austrian Madrid , and it is perhaps the most beautiful plaza in Spain. This apartment offers visitors a luxury accommodation with three balconies that look out onto the Plaza Mayor itself, as well as easy access to the city's most famed, central sights. Within walking distance are both the Royal Theatre and the Royal Palace, as well as the charming, turn of the 20th century...Read more

London, United Kingdomlovely spacious apartment - fabulous views of plaza mayor from 3

We were a family party of 4 adults meeting up for New Year in Madrid and this apartment was excellent for our needs. It was spacious so we never felt on top of each other. The main front room was huge with 3 full sized windows overlooking the plaza. The square was packed with the annual Christmas market, thronging crowds of families, street entertainers so was endlessly fascinating to watch. Being so centrally placed we could stroll out every day to most of the main sites and museums and then an endless choice of bars and restaurants in the evening.
The kitchen was small but perfect for our needs and the appliances were of the best quality. The 2 bathrooms had very good showers and the ensuite particularly was a good size. The bedrooms faced away from the main square so were relatively quiet. The main bedroom was a very good size and the bed excellent. The second bedroom was ideal for a single person but was a tight squeeze for a couple as it consisted of a single bed with a pull out mattress underneath so did not really make a double bed. -

st. louisThe Most Beautiful apartment in Madrid
Left on 06/06/2012 for a stay in May 2012
My husband and I spent a week in Madrid and stayed at Spain Select's Plaza Mayor I. The apartment, which overlooks the Plaza Mayor, was the perfect choice to be in the heart of Spain and live (albeit for a short time) in one of the most historic and beautiful places in Madrid. The apartment is exactly as you see on the website - absolutely beautiful. And my concern re: the noise was totally unfounded. The french doors you see in the picture blocked out any and all noise, even late at night. And it was wonderful to be able to open them and watch the activity below. And we loved the central location which allowed us to wander on foot much of the time.
And working with Spain Select was great. I emailed Laura several times during the decision making process and she was extremely timely and helpful in answering my questions. Also their online payment system worked very well. Spain Select arranged for pick up and return to the airport which was extremely helpful. Tiago met us at the apartment upon arrival and gave us the necessary information along with contact information if anything was needed during our stay. As it turned out we discovered there was no coffee pot in the apartment. My husband emailed Tiago and the following morning one was delivered to us. Our security deposit was credited back to us just a few days after our departure.
Thank you Spain Select for a wonderful stay in Plaza Mayor I and we look forward to another visit soon. -

Fresno, CAA bird's eye view of life in the Plaza Mayor

We spent a delightful week in this unique apartment, enjoying the constantly changing activity on the Plaza Mayor below. We wanted to be in the center of Old Madrid and able to walk or take the Metro everywhere, which is exactly what we did. Our "neighbors" were friendly and anxious to help us with suggestions and directions. For a centuries old building, the apartment was amazingly modernized with state of the art kitchen and bathrooms. The bedrooms were comfortable and the large living/dining room was perfect for relaxing and entertaining. The noisy life on the plaza went on late into the night, but we expected that, and the scene below was our entertainment! We really have no complaints and the service from Spain Select was seamless!

I think this can be kept very simple and short:
When you look at the pictures on the internet, in this case an appartment, you always think "fine - does it really look like this in real life?" and yes - it did. Only comment, and this is not a complaint, the carpets in the living room could do with a change. -

This was our first real visit to Madrid (we had flown through a few times--we travel a fair amount), and our first time renting from Spain Select. After doing internet research, we decided to rent Plaza Mayor 1, based on its location and description. When we arrived, our expectations were exceeded in every way. Kudos to Spain Select for making our stay so enjoyable by helping to arrange our airport transfers (thanks Laura), meeting us when we arrived, giving us the layout of Madrid and doing exactly what they said they would. They even returned the entire security deposit the day they said they would.
Madrid is a great town for walking, and you simply can't find a better location than Plaza Mayor 1. We spent days walking around, shopping, seeing the museums, palaces etc., eating tapas everywhere and then day tripped to Toledo and Segovia. Using Del Sol as our Metro base (a few minutes walk through pedestrian shopping districts), the train system can efficiently take you anywhere. Both train stations are easily accessible by metro or cab, depending on where you want to day-trip to.
Plaza Mayor 1 was large, well decorated and furnished, and very comfortable. The kitchen worked well for breakfast and some dinners, and standing on the balconies at sunset overlooking Plaza Mayor (and all of its street performers) was a great family time we won't soon forget. My wife and I went to spend time with our college age daughter (studying in France-- but we wanted warmer weather so we met in Spain) and our high school Senior son (who was also on a week's break). I mention this because the second bedroom has two single trundle beds (vs the very comfortable queen bed in the main bedroom). This worked great for us, but may lead to discussion about who gets which bedroom if two couples were splitting this apartment. That is the only caveat I can give--everything was great and exactly as described .
To summarize, I highly recommend Spain Select, and will use them again on our next trip to Spain (we want to go back soon). While I have rented houses and apartments in France and Italy from other agencies that I like, we will use Spain Select for our Spanish visits. When we next return to Madrid, I will stay in Plaza Mayor 1. I can't imagine a rental stay being any better than this one.Response from Spain Select - 04/06/2011
